Craigslist Launched A Search Engine Optimization Career!

September 27, 2008

Craigslist helped launch our SEO career, yes it’s true. We had had a lot of success using Craigslist to market our organically grown plant business back in 2005 and 2006. However, we could not overcome a severe drought that has gripped the desert southwest were we live for several years.

We closed that business and took the summer off to rest and reflect on our future. With a new source of income needed, as the autumn months approached, we called upon our past experience. Running a janitorial business. We knew that commercial services were not the route that we wanted to take.

So we chose to open, a professional house cleaning service. What we experienced using Craigslist was a race to become the lowest priced vendor asked to clean homes that hadn’t been cleaned in years. That was not the vision we had for our business.

We observed that none of my Craigslist competitors had a website to link to in their ads. That’s when the lights went off… So to speak, in my head… “If only we had a professional website that we could link to in our ads”, there we could explain how dependable we are and why our services were worth a premium price.

The problem was that there was no money for a professional website to be designed. When like any good entrepreneurs we realized that bartering was our only option. Finally, a designer agreed to exchange his services for ours. However, his time table was not in sync with ours and we needed a website now.

Our solution was a one page free geo-cities website from Yahoo. The site was up in an hour or two. Now, it was time to visit Craigslist to place a free ad that included a link to the new one page website.

My phone rang early the next morning, the caller explained I am on your website and I would like to set up an appointment for a consultation. We agreed to work together and this couple became my most lucrative client. This is our story of Craigslist launching an SEO career? I knew that day this Internet thing was where we were headed!

The rest is history!

Does Your Service Website Meet The “Needs Factor.”

September 26, 2008

It is fair to say that many buyers of website services and many designers don’t understand that service website visitors are “Need Buyers.” They as a group do not want to be provided with any “Wow Factor” from your website.

Believe me, when my vehicles AC wet out on April 14th in Tucson, I wasn’t buying “Wow” when I did my Google search for “auto AC repair Tucson.” I needed my AC fixed, as of yesterday. I was a “Needs Buyer.”

All I cared about was, could you solve my problem (Need) today? (Benefit) During my Google search if I clicked towards your website and it loaded slow because of flash on the site I would just click away.

If you didn’t make it easy for me to determine that you could solve my problem I would also leave. It’s fair to say that most service purchases are accompanied with a fair amount of stress. This is especially true for purchasing for buying website services. The consumer generally isn’t sure what is best for their needs.

Our websites are designed to clearly define what your website is offering. We also define the benefit for the consumer. The benefit here is that you are the business that best can fulfill their needs. We also assist you in providing what is known as “a call to action.” This is the part where you actually ask for their business.

The service business website needs to create leads and appointments, so there primary goal is to create an inquiry by email and preferably by phone. If the designer that you are choosing doesn’t understand how to build a website for the ‘Needs buyer” you should probably find one that does.

Think about it…. If your homes roof is leaking or your car will not start, do you really care about a websites look and feel? No, you want to know this, “Can you solve my problem, and now?

Does your website offer solutions?

Older Internet Entrepreneurs Rule!

September 16, 2008

This post is based on a Wall Street Journal article dated 05/06/2008. The story goes on to take a look at the true image of an Internet entrepreneur. Despite the success of a college dropout like Bill gates, this is not the true image of the Internet guru.

It is often seen that the Internet has been built around a bunch of 20 something college dropouts. However, the Kauffman Foundation recently altered this view. They surveyed some 600 or so entrepreneurs who started businesses over the decade from 1995 to 2005 and who have revenues that exceeded a million dollars.

Their report concluded that the average age was 39 and that 24% where over 45. The report noted that only 8% did not earn a college degree. It also noted that almost sixteen and a half years had passed between college graduation and when they started their internet business.

Well, we haven’t made our millions, but our business training began when I was 52 and this business was launched when I was 53! We may not have gotten there yet, but we have a written business plan and a drive to succeed that says that we will.

Do you rule?

We invite you to join the conversation and leave a comment. We also invite you to continue the conversation on your blog or perhaps use a trackback, or maybe even social bookmark this article, give it a Digg, or Stumble it.

Is Your Website Too Busy?

September 13, 2008

A good sign that your website is to busy can be found by taking a good look at your Google analytics. If you see that your website has a high bounce rate then your website just might be to busy. Busy websites think that everything needs to be crammed into the home page or any page for the matter. They seem to not be able to comprehend the concept of KISS. Keep It Simple Stupid!

As an internet marketer and SEO provider I visit dozens of website a day. I am amazed by how many websites are so busy that I couldn’t find what I was looking for. These sites cram so much information that it makes using the website very difficult. Try visiting a major retailer and you will see what I mean.

These sites are often put together as if they were a newspaper and use a multi column approach. When I see these pages beginning to load I usually leave. Experience has shown me that these sites are so difficult to use that I seldom find what I am looking for.

Earlier this year we needed to find out where we go to vote for the primary election in our city. We had moved since the last election cycle and didn’t know where our polling place was located. My honey said she heard on the evening news that voting information was available on the TV channels website.

I am sure that it was there but I could not find it so I gave up and called the local Democratic headquarters for the information. That site was trying to do way too much and ended up not being useful.

This is where market research is very useful. Ask your friends, family, business associates, and strangers to visit your website. Ask them for an honest evaluation of their experience. Take the time to make up an evaluation form. Limit it to 5 or 6 open ended questions.

Be prepared to make changes and to except criticism. What you and your web designer consider a great feature may be driving away potential customers. The ultimate goal is to convert the visitor into a customer.

We build business websites with only one or two columns and with a minimum of distractions. Everything is simple, clean, and straight forward. We avoid the cute and creative by simply focusing on selling. We recommend that you do the same.

We invite you to join the conversation and leave a comment. We also invite you to continue the conversation on your blog or perhaps use a trackback, or maybe even social bookmark this article, give it a Digg or Stumble it.

SEO – Search Engine Optimization Is A Numbers Game!

September 7, 2008

SEO is as much a numbers game as anything else. Good basic SEO will only get you so far in the search rankings. We believe almost anyone with enough time and resources can obtain the first page of results for any search query. However, most companies do not have the funds or staff for such an undertaking. There are still many opportunities to reach the coveted first page of results.

Any successful SEO provider knows that if you go where the crowds aren’t you will be successful. That’s why so much effort goes into Keyword research. Keyword search, after all, is a billion dollar industry. You can look for long tail or obscure keywords to be successful. The huge benefit here is that using long tail search you have less sites competing for the keyword phrase that you have chosen, also your visitor is now highly targeted and ready for the sale.

A good example would be the search for “increased website traffic Tucson” There is no doubt that the person using this search query wants more traffic to their website and that it has a Tucson customer base.It just so happens that almost any day, if you did the search for “increased website traffic Tucson” you would find Tucson SEO Solutions in the #1 and #2 positions. We believe that you should practice what you preach or as we like to say if your going to talk the talk you have to walk the walk.

Many an SEO expert will read this and scoff, “That’s not a competitive search” and they are correct. However, it is the service that we provide and in our location. We should be at the top if we are any good at what we do. I am often amazed when I see companies offering SEO services and they can’t obtain first page rankings for themselves! This isn’t as uncommon as you might expect. We developed our keyword to reflect what we do and by our location. If you have a local business with a website you should be doing the same.

Do you need assistance developing your keywords to reflect your business and location?

Niche SEO – What A Concept

September 7, 2008

We live in Tucson, Arizona, which is a website marketing backwater of sorts. Most business owners that I speak with at my many networking events have little knowledge of the services that we provide.

I ran a local SEO meet-up group but we were lucky if 5 people showed up. So it’s not easy to find a group to talk shop with. Desperate to mingle with others in the industry I traveled the 125 miles north to Phoenix to attend an SEO Meet-up group there.

It was run by a woman from New Mexico. She holds the Arizona franchise for a training academy and travels here monthly to provide training and to market herself through this group.

I was especially thrilled by what I had learned at this gathering. The focus of the meeting was to share our favorite SEO tools and website. It’s always nice to come across useful resources, especially the ones that are free.

In a private conversation after the meeting I discovered that this woman had been providing SEO services and training for seven years. Which is to say, a way long time in this industry.

I mentioned that we specialized in niche SEO and she expressed amazement at what she just heard. The concept of Niche SEO seemed about as far away as Yuma, or her native New Mexico. She explained that she had never heard of niche SEO before today. Actually, I wasn’t sure who was more surprised me or her.

Our version of niche SEO is exactly what the name implies. We offer SEO to niche industries. It’s merely a more focused approach to SEO. We simply go where the competition isn’t. After all, isn’t this what keyword search and long tails are all about? It’s about finding niches that are related to our client’s products or services that others are not using.

Does your business have niche products or services?
