Another Look at Google Analytics

Another Look at Google Analytics

No this article does not cover all the great new features that have been added to Analytics recently. What I am going to suggest that you start paying more attention to time on site and more specifically time on each page stats. They will reveal much about the quality of your content and whether it meets the visitors expectations.

This site, of ours, is a hybrid of sorts in that it includes 14 static pages where we sell our services and tell our story. Then there is the blog that has a completely different audience. So in many ways this site is two in one. They both serve completely different purposes and audiences. All of the static pages use a sales funnel designed to elicit a buying decision. The blog, however, loosely applies these principals. Its pages offer mostly reference material and information.

What I am looking for on my static page is an average of about 7 minutes per page. If this drops below this level and stays there for 30 days or so I would then consider updating that pages content.

When examining time on page stats for the blog there are many more factors to consider. Was the page brief or detailed? Did the post include links to other sites? What was the topic of the post? If you study these time on page stats you can eventually develop a feel for what your readers are interested in and you can then make adjustments.

Average time on pages this is a real indicator if people like your site and its content. Average time on site is nice but mostly useless. There are other considerations as well. It is important to determine where your traffic is being generated from. If you social bookmark your blog posts you can expect these pages to have a considerably lower time on page stats.

Are Most Directories Useless ?

December 18, 2008

This is a feature that we are implementing with each post. It is here because we provide small business SEO solutions all across Arizona. At this time we would like to thank our friends and clients for their support. If you have landed here looking for our Internet marketing or SEO services in Marana or Oro Valley, then please follow this SEO link.

Are Most Directories Useless ?

I have not been a fan of using directories for website marketing or for link building. When I first began the process of link building directory site submissions it was a well established mode for link building. But it never made sense to me. There was all of this great volume of articles and posts that indicated that the search engines were mostly interested in great content.

Since directories didn’t seem to offer quality content they didn’t seem to be very good options for using in backlink development. But I went with the flow and tried using software that partially automated the process. I submitted to around 100 sites this way and manually. In this process I only used free directory listings. After 90 days I reviewed these sources and discovered that we gained submission in only 9 directories. The ROI didn’t warrant any further use of this method, but the misconception was still circulating that the practice worked.

I still wasn’t convinced that these links from directories provided quality relevant links and I held on tightly to this conviction. Then it seemed as if Google had waged war on directories as many witnessed their Page Rank diminish in 2008. So I joined the bandwagon denouncing the use of directories.

Then Google eliminates any reference to using directories for any purpose. Gone where the recommendations for industry stalwart’s DMOZ and Yahoo. This was followed up with remarks from Matt and others at Google. It seems that Google’s position on using directories has not changed, but they never state what that position is only that it has not changed.

The reality is the only reason that most directories exist is to generate links, links that are used to gain higher search rankings. So let me see most directories have no useful content and their only reason to exist is to manipulate the search engines through links. This doesn’t sound search engine friendly to me.

How was your experience with directory submissions?

Has Google Been Caught Going Against Net Neutrality?

December 16, 2008

This is a feature that we are implementing with each post. It is here because we provide small business SEO solutions all across Arizona. At this time we would like to thank our friends and clients for their support. If you have landed here looking for our Internet marketing or SEO services in Paradise Valley or Gila Bend, then please follow this SEO link.

Has Google Been Caught Going Against Net Neutrality?

The Wall Street Journal reported today that Google appears to be abandoning their net neutrality position. Cnet also reported on this subject and offered Google’s response. The WSJ noted that Google has been a long time supporter of a neutral playing field for all internet traffic. What this means is that all users are treated to open access to the internet traffic. It is meant to treat all traffic as equal and to give no advantage in any particular type of traffic.

This is a throwback to the early days of telephone service. All calls were to be treated equal. So a phone company could not pick and choose which calls it put through. However, with the advent of peer to peer file swapping, TV over the internet, and video services the internet has been increasingly more crowded.

Service providers such as cable and the traditional phone companies have had a difficult time managing the surges in traffic volume. They have been seeking permission from the FCC to change the rules on how they handle service. They want to charge more to provide better service.

A few years ago Yahoo, MSN, and Google joined with others to fight against controlled internet access. However, Yahoo and MSN quietly abandoned their support of net neutrality. It was pointed out that Yahoo has entered into an arrangement to offer DSL for AT&T. It was also noted that Microsoft has entered an agreement with Verizon to supply services for its TV over the internet offerings.

It should be noted that in early 2008 Google noted “Some major broadband service providers have threatened to act as gatekeepers, playing favorites with particular applications or content providers, demonstrating that this threat is all too real.” We must now ask has their position changed?

Google responded that the WSJ had misunderstood its potential involvement with internet service providers. It noted that it is considering bringing its data centers into the networks of existing internet service providers. It noted that it would increase speed for its internet services to the end user. It didn’t focus on what a huge advantage this would be for them.

Google also explained that it would not be entering into binding agreements. It also went on to explain that anyone could do the same if they wanted too. This sounded bogus to me and it seemed to ring hallow with the writer at cnet.

What do you think about this?

Get On The First Page Of Google Today… Really

December 16, 2008

Get on Google’s First Search Engine Results Page today. It sounds like some kind of SEO gimmick I know, but it’s true. Using websites like Craigslist and MSN , is where this begins and both are free. Free classified ads placed on these websites rule the SERP’s when used correctly. They allow you to post just about anything. However, they all have different rules so make sure you are aware of them.

Craigslist allows you to use HTML and place links in your ads to your website. These are great for driving some traffic to your website, but they no longer pass link juice. However, the same does not hold true for MSN. You can use Anchor text links on MSN but it has to be copied from somewhere else. You can not directly place HTML in MSN ads as you can on Craigslist.

The key to how all this works is in using your keyword phrases in your titles and in your content. A little basic SEO goes a long way here. that means using basic SEO techniques on another website to drive traffic to your website.

This works extremely well for long tail keyword phrases and for local websites. We have used this technique for the term “affordable Nike drivers.” Recently, within 2 days we were able to acquire the first 5 results on Google’s first page for this search term. This was an experiment and a learning lesson for a “would be rookie SEO” in the 206 zip code! (This is a story for another day) We did this several months ago.

This method can also be used for branding purposes. This is accomplished by placing your business name in the forefront of your ads or in your ads contents. This assures your company name will appear in the snippet field of each search result, if done properly. Since around 47% or so of searchers use the snippet when deciding whether to visit your site, you business name needs to be there. My business is XYZ and we provide XYZ.

While these methods will drive traffic to your website, the real secret here is not about the traffic that is produced. No, it was about denying my competition access to Google’s first page of results! Think about it, for every place you have taken up with your free classified ad or social media comment, you have removed your competition from the first page of search results.

Also remember this, 89% or so of web searchers never go beyond the first page of results, those sites that are bumped from the first page are now less competitive. Some have suggested to me that this is not fair. While they are entitled to there opinion I would strongly disagree.

Tucson SEO Solutions has used this technique almost daily for over a year for the search term “Tucson SEO.” There are days when we have able to acquire 9 out of 10 positions for this search. Usually, we hold down 3 or 4 positions. It just depends how busy we have become. When we placed 9 out of 10 we were not a very busy SEO company and we spent a lot of time branding ourselves.

Give it a try if you like, just please do follow the rules on each site and be ready for immediate search results. Do a search for “affordable Nike drivers” and you see what we mean.

Did we mention that we have never spent a penny on marketing on line. We have spent hundreds on printed materials for expos but never a penny on line.

What we have written about here we offer as training that is included with our website design and redesign services but in greater detail and it covers many more options.

SEO Creates Opportunities

December 16, 2008

The Internet has come a long way in a short amount of time. Initially if you had a floral shop it was very easy to be found for a search for flowers. Do a search today on Google and you will find that search produces 296 million websites that have the word flower on one of their web pages.

If you did another Google search for fresh flowers it will produce 7 million results. Now, lets consider what opportunities that we can create using some search engine optimization. SEO is often about finding niche ways to describe your website to the search engines.

This time we will add some Geo-targeting SEO to the search for fresh flowers. We will use the city of Chicago. Now we are beginning to create some real possibilities with this search. Our search on Google for fresh flowers in Chicago produced only 567,000 results. The fewer websites that you have competing in any one market will increase the likelihood of your website gaining high search rankings. There is no downside to the fact that there are fewer searches being preformed. The reason is because the longer the search query is the more targeted those searchers are becoming. These searchers are more likely to be converted into customers.

To have a realistic opportunity to succeed in gaining search engine traffic your website must appear on the first page of the search results, and preferably in the Google results. Now, if your flower shop happens to be on the south side of Chicago you will also want to optimize your website for that keyword phrase as well. You will have provided yourself a wonderful opportunity to succeed. In reality SEO is about creating opportunities to obtain high search engine placement. A search on Google for fresh flowers south Chicago will produce 235,000 search results.

You can do everything correct SEO wise, you can soar to the top of the first page, but that alone will not compensate for the content on your website. This is where “the content is king” part comes into play. It is not enough to simply get website visitors.

This is why we have chosen to provide a Holistic SEO approach when working with our clients. SEO can get potential clients to the front door (your website) but that is where SEO ends its job. Now you must take an active role in presenting your content in a specific pattern that is designed to funnel your visitors into a buying situation. Finally, “the call to action,” you must actually ask for the sale or a phone call e-mail etc.

We Rock The Google Directory With 6 # 1’s WOW

December 15, 2008

This is a feature that we are implementing with each post. It is here because we provide small business SEO solutions all across Arizona. At this time we would like to thank our friends and clients for their support. If you have landed here looking for our Internet marketing or SEO services in Safford or Green Valley, then please follow this SEO link.

We Rock The Google Directory with 6 # 1’s

Please excuse me while I do some boasting, but first this:

I am so anti directory submissions that I forgot that Google has its own directory. Membership is free but it requires that you first be accepted into the DMOZ directory. You seldom read anything about this directory, and so little is written that I forgot that it existed. Then I saw a thread on a forum that mentioned the directory.

So I Goggled it and started doing some searches. The obvious first search was for me was SEO and we could not be found on the first 5 pages so I gave up on this search. Then I tried using other SEO related searches that we use and do well in the standard index. The results were mind boggling. Six of the seven searches that were used all included SEO in the keyword phrase this site ranked number one. Here is how we fared.

SEO Solutions #1

Local SEO #1

Local SEO Solutions #1

Niche SEO #1

Small Business SEO Solutions #1

Geo-targeted SEO #1

Geo-targeting SEO # 2

Wow, I thought this is crazy good luck to rank so high across so many searches. The worst we did outside of just SEO was #2. This euphoria quickly surrendered to reality. You see I check Google Analytic’s almost daily and never has this site had a visitor from Google’s directory. None, not one visitor has visited here from Google’s directory. Even this coveted directory is useless for generating website traffic.

So while many covet a listing here, it hasn’t generated any traffic. Though it does make for an interesting blog post and was worth some bragging rights.

Are you in the Google Directory?

Another Website Valuation Tool

Recently, someone left a comment on my blog and mention this website, Website Facts. So as always, I checked out the site. Generally these site references are blatant self promotion. This one did not appear to be that way because it was actually relevant to the blogs topic.

The first thing that I noticed was that it took a real long time to load. So much so that I left to do something else. Later, I was surprised when I noticed that it had not timed out and was now open.

You simply enter the web address that you want information about and click. It is very straight forward and easy to use. It provides a wealth of information about the website including an estimate of its value. Unfortunately, much of the information for this website is incorrect. As with other valuation tools we have used they register our banners for Digg and Stumble, as if they are paid ads. They are there in hopes people will use these sites to promote our site.

They all seem to be getting their traffic information from Complete.com and it is way off by a factor of 4 which is a big improvement. Other than being another way to estimate the value of the site it didn’t offer me much that was useful. However, if you are merely attempting to get a value estimate for your site it is worth a visit.

What’s your website worth?

Google Provides New Search Volume Insights

December 13, 2008

This is a feature that we are implementing with each post. It is here because we provide small business SEO solutions all across Arizona. At this time we would like to thank our friends and clients for their support. If you have landed here looking for our Internet marketing or SEO services in Bisbee or Yuma, then please follow this SEO link.

Google Provides New Search Volume Insights

Google has created lots of great tools to improve website performance and results. They are now offering a nice tool called Insights. It allows the user to enter a keyword and receive detailed search volume information. The really cool thing is that it allows the user set specific parameters on the dates and regions to be queried.

The results reflect a 30 day search volume based on how you have defined your search. If your search included the United States, your results would also include a break down by state. It includes color coded maps. This was a impressive touch.

Because the tool is still in Beta testing its results appear to be currently limited to one word searches. It could produce results for the search query, SEO, but could not produce anything for local SEO. Over time it is reasonable to expect that the data base will expand beyond one word searches.

As an Arizona resident who practices SEO, I was pleased to learn that Arizona ranked fourth in the volume of searches looking for SEO. This tool is worth exploring; even in Beta testing it truly does offer some useful insights.

Are you ready to increase your keyword knowledge?

When Generating New Website Content Size Matters

December 12, 2008

This is a feature that we are implementing with each post. It is here because we provide small business SEO solutions all across Arizona. At this time we would like to thank our friends and clients for their support. If you have landed here looking for our Internet marketing or SEO services in Chandler or Apache Junction, then please follow this SEO link.

When Generating New Website Content Size Matters

If you visit enough industry blogs and forums you will eventually come across the topic or question “does size matter?” And no the question has nothing to do with the human anatomy. What people are wanting to know has to do with the size of the content on their web pages. Which is a very good question.

There is a few things that you should keep in mind when generating content for you website. First, we live in a society that runs on quick. Google and the other search engines have made this maddening pace even quicker. Think about it for a while. Look at the time it takes the search engine to produce your search results. Always less than one second. Now, it may take the internet infrastructure longer to deliver those results, but anyway that you look at it the pace is quick.

A net result of this is that it creates an unrealistic high expectation when the searcher lands on your website. They want answers and they want that information produced quickly. The average website visitor lands at your site and starts scanning for what they are looking for. Your job is to provide that information easily and quickly for your scanning audience.

People no longer have the patience to read long drawn out pages. This was one of the first lessons that I learned when I created our first SEO site. I wanted to explain every little detail. Our pages often exceeded 1,000 words per page. We now recommend somewhere between 300-500 words per page. The exception to this would be the home page.

We use what we call the hub and spoke system of web design. In this system the home page acts as the hub that links to the sites other pages. We create small snippets of information and then link to a corresponding page that has the more detailed information on that pages topic. All pages are created as landing pages and use a sales funnel to produce a buying decision. To generate a good quality sales funnel or what is also known as a features and benefits presentation usually requires 300-500 words.

When you use extensive text on your pages it bores people and they abandon your pages. When you don’t provide enough information you generally make the buying decision more difficult due to the lack of information. You need to be able to explain the products or the services features. You then need to explain how this benefits your potential customer. Then simply ask for the sale using what is known as a call to action.

There is a great tool by Google called Website Optimizer. It allows you to create a short and long version of your page. It will deliver each page on a rotating basis and record the results. That way you can determine which page works best. It does require an AdWords account that costs $5.00 to set up but the service is free.

Does your size measure up?

Are All Your Eggs In One Search Basket?

December 12, 2008

With the economy in turmoil many individuals have awakened recently to discover the sad truth that their 401 K now resembles a 101 K. Especially hard hit were those who had all their assets tied up in their failed company. This scene has been played out in many large and small companies. Those in the financial services industries, companies like Indy Mac and Lehman Bros had all their eggs or most of them tied up in their companies stock. This is a definite example of all your eggs in one basket approach.

We have seen these similar tragedies play out on the cable and evening news almost non stop for weeks on end. But you say that’s not a problem for my web based business; well you might want to think again. As  many have learned recently things can change and change rapidly, and having all your eggs in one basket is never a good idea.

So I ask you how much of your internet traffic comes from Google? Now, what will you do if there is a “Florida” style algorithm update and you loose all your Google driven business. Could you adapt quickly enough to survive? If you are not prepared your business might not survive.

So let’s start out by considering what amount of traffic could you loose and survive. For those of you that say none, you truly have all your eggs in one basket and you desperately need to diversify your traffic sources. I personally, am comfortable with not exceeding 40% of my traffic from all the search engines combined. You will have to determine what you are comfortable with, but you really need to be realistic here.

It is common knowledge that the search engines adjust their algorithms over time and sometimes the changes can be dramatic. What if you generated 65% of your website traffic from Google? Let’s also assume that 65% of your websites links came from directories or forums. These are both common link building methods. What then do you suppose might happen if Google flat out stop counting links from either of these sources?

It is possible that if 65% of your links were made invalid that it could cause you to loose all of your traffic from Google in an instant. The traffic might never come back. What would you do? Do you have a plan in place to replace that traffic? These are very serious questions that you must ask. You need to clearly understand where your traffic comes from and how you generated that traffic.

We are fortunate that our Google traffic runs about 20% of our overall traffic for this site. However, we have a client, with a B2B very niche website, that has generated 50-55% of their traffic from the search engines. We are currently implementing changes that we hope will bring that down to around 40%. We recognize that for sites that are very niche or B2B, the challenge of generating non search traffic is much more difficult. This particular company manufactures equipment used in other manufacturing processes. It is non sexy stuff with a very small interest group. This is not the kind of stuff that people casually search for on the internet.

Having said that, we still must strive to get that reliance on the search engines reduced and as quickly as possible. Now, what about your websites? Where are your eggs located? One of the reasons I highlighted this B2B site in this discussion was to simply point out that moving your eggs into other baskets may not be easy as it first appears. Your market may limit the opportunities available to you. Making changes for some will require new marketing directions, but the need is great.

One last thing to cover here is that not all eggs are equal. While this website may only generate about 20% of its traffic from the search engines, it generates 90% of its leads through the SE’s. Since we are a pure organic search company we don’t use banner ads or PPC, if we lost our Google egg we might have to start paying for traffic something that we have never done.

So I ask you, where are your eggs these days?

Social Bookmarking Resource Center

December 10, 2008

At this time we would like to thank our friends and clients for their support. If you have landed here looking for our Internet marketing or SEO services in Goodyear or Flagstaff, then please follow this SEO link.

Social Bookmarking Resource Center

Let me state right upfront that I personally do not use Social Bookmarking sites. However, I do recognize the value that these sites offer for many individuals and website owners.

So with this in mind I wanted to share of few resources that should make these sites easier to use and find. The first site, Social Marker looks to be a great tool. It allows you to bookmark 48 sites at once. It also allows you to choose between no follow and do follow submissions.

The do follow would be used by those only looking to gain a search ranking advantage through links generated on these sites. The no follow crowd is more concerned about generating traffic. This group is generally full of affiliate marketers hoping that you will visit their site and then click on a text link or banner ad.

The second option will take an enormous effort to implement fully. It is a fairly comprehensive list of social bookmarking sites that includes over a thousand sites. That right at last count it covered 1,053. When visiting this blog please do leave them a worth while comment that’s a little more than “nice list.” Whoever generated this list has put a lot of time and effort to create it and should be rewarded with great comments.

A Comprehensive Ping List

December 10, 2008

If you have landed on this page looking for SEO services it is because we were specifically targeting your community. Please go here for SEO-Search Engine Optimization. Or stay on and learn more about the advantages of using pinging services.

We have created a comprehensive ping list that should provide you with the best possible opportunity to market your blog. For my San Jose SEO friends and those that came here for small business SEO solutions I will explain.

Most blogs come with a feature called pinging, or in this case auto pinging. Your blog, if set up properly will send a signal out called a ping. A ping is a signal that lets these websites know that you have just updated your website. These sites then collect a snippet of your new post and place it on their websites.

That snippet then becomes available in a search able database. These sites offer a great opportunity to market your website globally as you post with no additional effort. Every blog is a little different where this feature is located. If you have a WordPress 2.51 blog here are the instructions. In your control panel open up the write section, then go to settings and this is where you will find the ping feature.

Let me remind you that this is copyright protected material and is for personal use only. It can not ever be reproduced and placed on your blog or on a forum. We encourage you to link to this post if you want to share this information.

This list currently includes 84 ping sites.

Best Free SEO Tool Available Today!

December 10, 2008

Recently, I was doing some research on the web for a new SEO/SEM Blog list that we are creating. I started off by visiting Algojunkie, a site we recently discovered while working on our Do Follow List. They had a post about a really cool website SEO analyzer tool. That link took me to the SEO workers website. Once I got there I recalled that I had used this tool sometime ago and I had forgotten about it. What was I thinking, why I didn’t bookmark such a great site? This site is SEO Workers.

So without hesitation I gave the tool a whirl by entering my sites url. I thought one SEO website getting analyzed by another was too good an opportunity to pass up. I am sure glad that I availed myself of the free service. It is so cool and useful that I had to write about it. There is so much junk available that when something good comes around I feel obligated to share.

This is a summary of what we found doing a check on our website. We eliminated the stuff that is outdated. That outdated material was a little experiment where we ran our page titles and descriptions long. So if your paying attention, this wasn’t a good idea. We shortened things up and are doing much better now. Yes, we are not adverse to experimenting, just not in a black hat kind of way.

This process is broken down into 13 groups.

Here is the summary of our website.

General – This provides the basic server information.

Meta Tags – The information presented here was about 2 months out of date, but accurate for the time period.

Meta Tag Analysis – It gave our site a title relevancy score of 100% and 97% for description relevancy.

Web Page Analysis – No errors noted

The Page Displayed Within Search Engine Results – Info provided was based on old information.

Keywords found in the Anchor Tags – Nothing specific here.

Keywords Found in the Image Alt Attribute Text – The site lacks images so this section did not apply.

Keywords found on page – This section I believe is mostly useless because it deals with keyword density. It breaks keywords down into one, two or three word keyword phrases. This will require a closer analysis to see if any gems might be un-earthed.

URLs found in the page – I was surprised to find a podpress link that I will have to run down, as I was not aware of this and don’t use this plugin.

Headers returned form – Nothing caught my eye here.

Spell Checker – Did not use but would recommend that you do.

The last two items are strictly marketing for books and an SEO university.

The cost for this detailed report is a mere five bucks, donation. You can opt for the free report. The choice is yours. For most website it is the best 5 bucks you’ll ever spend.

Google Has Made Some Changes To Its Results

This is a feature that we are implementing with each post. It is here because we provide small business SEO solutions all across Arizona. At this time we would like to thank our friends and clients for their support. If you have landed here looking for our Internet marketing or SEO services in Sierra Vista, then please follow this SEO link.

Google Has Made Some Changes To Its Results

It was been widely known that Google is a big fan a user generated content. These sites that allow users to generate new content through posts and comments are know as Social Media sites. Google has several of these sites in its stable of properties, such as YouTube, Blogger, and Knol.

Well, Google has recently added some new features that are geared to influence this crowd. When you are logged into your Google account you will have a few more options and you can edit the results to your liking. You can deleted the results that you don’t like or you could leave a comment associated with a specific result.

These changes will only affect the results delivered to your account. While, I personally do not see a need for these new features I can see the value for others. Let’s say you work in a small office and you are doing research on a project that is based on Google searches. You could use these new features to edit the results to share with others in the office. It could also work with long distant collaborations. You could leave notes explaining your thoughts on a specific websites content. So this could be a very useful tool.

What I find most fascinating is the consideration of what Google will do with this information. If you are not aware of this already, Google records your user information when you are using your account. There is no privacy here. What I wonder is will they use this information to eventually impact the search results that they deliver?

What do you think? Is this something that you would use?
