It’s Time Too Try Something Different!

I am always looking, as in everyday looking, for new marketing opportunities. This is how our business maintains its edge in the search results. Everyday, literally everyday, I explore new websites to see if they might benefit us and our readers. That is what was so cool about the 109 Day Link Building Program. I was constantly trying out new social media sites. Then I would later check out analytics to see if we had any ROI for the time that we spent on that site. Why, waste time on a site if it doesn’t benefit us directly.

While I was doing my daily research yesterday I discovered FeedAgg .com. I almost didn’t visit because the name seemed so strange. Luckily, I did visit and what I found is very interesting. The site acts like an RSS directory. Now, I have a very large list of similar sites put I have never been inspired to use this list. After all, I am not a fan of directories in general so why should this be any different, or so I thought.

I had left the site open last night in my browser on the oft change that it might seem more appealing today. When I returned today I finished submitting my feed. Then I clicked back onto the home page. It was there that I discovered that it offered the ability to vote on feeds. This allows me to see how the blogs stacks up against others. I liked that idea a lot.

The site is very active. I just posted our feed and started writing this post maybe 30 minutes passed and 15 new feeds have been submitted. The main page has a PR of six so Google likes it as well. The feeds are broken down by categories and they can be voted on for accuracy. I am looking forward to playing around with the site and exploring its potential. The site also lists lens for review as well. This is something that I have never seen before. It also provides links to your last 15 posts! Those links are Do Follow.

If your blog makes the cut you could end up with a PR 6 link and those are extremely difficult to come by these days!

Fresh TV

Fresh TV

Well, I don’t write about entertainment shows so what the heck is Fresh TV? It is a human edited website directory. Now, I have never been a big fan of directories and I have compared them to link farms. Unfortunately many if not most directories are not human edited. Thus they end up being filled with a bunch of crappy useless websites. I have been preaching against them for as long as I have been in this business.

Recently, I came across a video by Matt Cutts on the subject. Matt is the Google spokesperson on all things related to SEO. About this time last year Google pulled its support for using directories to build links in its webmaster guidelines. He was again addressing how Google deals with directories. He noted that only directories that are human edited will be useful for link building purposes. He noted that directories where anyone gets in are useless. Yes, I felt vindicated.

So why then title the post about Fresh TV. Well, it just happens to one of those human edited directories. What sets them apart from the crowded field is this. Your sites home page must have at least a PR of 2 to be considered for their directory. They also offer a free listing. So you might want to consider this directory in your link building portfolio. Very few directories make this requirement so a link here just might be useful.

I still am not a fan of directories for several reason. They are useless for networking and branding purposes which are at the core of our link building philosophy. Also the ROI – Return On Investment is minimal. I believe that there are lots better ways to build links. Now, having said that, Fresh TV does a very good job by placing a PR 2 requirement for acceptance into their directory. I have never seen this before.

Google Voice ( Free Phone Service ) Has Finally Arrived

I wrote about a Free Google Phone Service a few months ago. It was a lazy Saturday afternoon and I was changing TV channels during a lunch break. It was then I heard this announcer talk briefly about free phone service being offered by Google. I quickly hoped on the PC and searched for “Free Google Phone Service.” I follow the link and was taken to a Google page that described the service that was just about to roll out. All you had to do was apply and wait.

Well, not only did I apply I thought the idea was so good that I wrote about it on our blog. I ended up getting a bunch of calls early in the morning from the east coast. These callers didn’t follow the link to the Google site where they could apply for the service.

No they had to wake me up and ask about the program. It wasn’t long before I would edit the post and ask not to be called about the program. That actually worked and that was a surprise for me. People often don’t read the entire post before they respond.

By last week, I had given up on ever hearing from Google when I received an email announcing that we could now enroll for our free phone service. I can use this service to replace our 800 number services. It will not save a huge amount as we seldom get calls through that number. But saving money is these tough economic is essential as every penny counts these days. I had been considering trying Magic Jack now I don’t have too.

Google Voice allows you to forward your calls. This can be done for up to six phone numbers. It offers voice mail to email transcripts which are sent to the email of your choice. It includes call conferencing and a bunch of other features. The phone service can be used to call other nations at what appears to be very reasonable rates.

I believe that the call forwarding feature can be a very valuable option for the busy home based entrepreneur. I know that I have missed many calls went I have been out of the office. I come home and check our voice mail and then check caller ID to find that many callers do not leave a voice message. If you can’t answer the phone business moves to their next option. I know that I do this myself.

We just acquired our number 843-882-7661 which reads 843-TUCSON1. I will keep you updated as we begin to use this phone service. The original idea was to replace our existing local phone. If we can do this you will be the first to know.

A FireFox Feature Gets My Attention

A FireFox Feature Gets My Attention

I have written lately about being careful who you link too. Especially in the comments section of your blog. Generally, when a link appears in the context of a post these are generally considered safe. The writer has established some kind of relationship or experience with the site that they are pointing out in their post. While it is possible that any site can be infected with malware these are usually safe to visit. However, the older the post is the less safe any link will be.

A commenter on this blog rightfully pointed out that we need to be extremely careful. He noted that the site that we were linking to could have been sold. It could now be any number of things that we would not desire to be linked to. I see this everyday when I’m doing research or simply link building. Roughly 15% of the sites that I visit in any day are no longer what they once were.

It becomes a whole different ballgame when we are considering user generated content such as blog comments. In most cases the person leaving the comment is linking to their own site. It is possible that their site could have been exploited without them being aware of it through some java script, plugin, or through other avenues. This is one of the reasons that I visit sites that are being linked to in my blog to verify that they are worthy of my links. I would rather find the problem than have you end up with a nasty surprise.

Even being diligent can never assure safety on the internet. A site could be compromised long after a comment is left. This can not be controlled, so I check all sites for your safety and ours. I have very good anti virus software that presents us from acquiring most malware when visiting other sites. But that happened way to late for us.

Today, I discovered that we have another layer of protection that I was unaware of through the use of FireFox 3.5. Although it has lots of problems opening this new version it has extra protection feature in place. I discovered this by accident today. Someone left a rather unusual post comment that said this person wanted to hire us. This is not the kind of statement that would be most potential clients would make on the blog. Those wanting to discuss services usually go to the contact page. So I was suspicious.

I was skeptical of the comment. You can get jaded very quickly as a blog owner. Since the comment needed a follow up I naturally followed the link to the site. FireFox denied access to this site and delivered up a bright red warning box. It read Reported Attack Site and it had additional information. I was both surprised and relieved. What I thought was a bogus request was merely a ploy to direct me to a site that could have caused some serious problems. Now, I am fairly confident that our anti virus program would have protected us but you never know.

Then strangely I find an email alert in my inbox that discussed this FireFox feature that I was unaware of. One thing is certain I am on high alert these days. The site was hacked last month and I have been writing about spam and spammers lately. They don’t much like it when you call out their negative behavior. So in this sense we have a target on our site. We have adopted somewhat strident security measures on the site recently but again you never know.

These people who do this don’t care that its your business and livelihood that they are messing with. It’s all a big joke to them. Now, having said all of that I will attempt to continue to be a positive influence on our industry. I will continue to develop our ethical link building programs and write for the small business owner.

Social Media Done Right – A Contest That Helps Promote Your Business

I don’t believe that I have ever written about a contest on another site so this is a first for Tucson SEO. Yesterday, I received an email from a site that I reviewed on Day 29 of the 109 Day Link Building Explosion. This site, Start Up Nation is an absolutely wonderful resource for the start-up entrepreneur.

I became a member during the review process for the 109 Day project. I have returned many times over the last few months simply because it is jammed full of useful information. This is just one example of the many ways that the link building program has assisted our business.

Since I am in their database I get periodic email updates. So when I saw their email in my inbox yesterday I immediately opened it and I am glad that I did. The email announced Start-up Nations Home Based 100 Competition. It is a competition to be named the best business in 10 different categories. The competition includes these business groups.

The contest is very simple and straight forward. You are asked to provide an explanation about why you should win. You simply provide that information and then submit it. You are then sent a verification email when you click on it you are taken to your profile page. Where you should vote for yourself. When you vote you will see a pop up box. It asks if you want to receive daily email notice to vote.

What I think is very interesting about this contest is that there is no prize. When I mentioned this to my business/life partner she looked at me like I was crazy. As in why would you want to enter a contest without a prize. The site explains the no prize approach this way ” First off, the publicity is priceless.” It went much further than that but the whole idea is about publicity, for both you and their site.

Keep in mind the site is geared towards start-up businesses that are likely to be short on cash and struggling to get visibility. Personally, I think that this is a great marketing opportunity for both the site and for those who participate.

When you join the competition you are asked to enter two categories. I entered the Recession Busters and Boomers Back In Business as these two seemed to be the best match for Tucson SEO. I am also considering adding out Tucson Small Business Networking Group site to the competition as well.

Is a competition like this for you?… Maybe, and maybe not. I believe that the site is worth a visit and I recommend that you visit it now. I would also ask that you visit our profile page and to give us a vote.

What the Bing Is Going On Here?

What the Bing Is Going On Here?

As most of you already know Microsoft was launched it new search engine called Bing. Oops! Make that decision engine. The question for me is how will this affect my site and business. Will enough people searching for our targeted keywords make a difference to me? Bing can gain all the market share it wants but if it doesn’t directly affect our site then I really don’t care. Everything else is just interesting stuff.

The site as always ranked better with MSN than it did with Google or Yahoo, but so few people used it for our keyword it didn’t make a difference. Below I have outlined four keyword phrases that we target to make my point. This information is part of a weekly.

I am experiencing trouble with my tables today. So I will explain rather than just show you are chart of the results.

I checked 4 different keyword phrases

Local SEO

Arizona SEO

Phoenix SEO

Tucson SEO

Our site ranks better with Bing than it does with the other two majors in 3 out of these four searches. The other keyword phrase, Tucson SEO, the site ranks # ! across all the major search engines. While this is nice the question remains, what does this mean for website traffic. We had almost no traffic from Microsoft so any improvement will be statistically significant.

Last month the site had 15 visitors a month from MSN Live that has jumped to 60 over the last 30 days. That is a nice jump and it is traffic that we may not have acquired any other way. It will take some time to discover if that was just the SEO crowd checking things in Bing or not. If those numbers reflect real potential clients then Bing might begin to affect our bottom line.

Personally, I like Bing. It has some new features that will likely be added by the other majors.

Bing might actually be able to grab some market share in the search wars. I sure hope so since they have put 100 Million dollars into the advertising budget to promote its launch.
