Trading Page Rank And Link Juice For Quality Blog Comments
August 31, 2009
It may sound crazy but Tucson SEO as a company is no fan of Page Rank. I think too much is made out of acquiring a high page rank. Our focus has always been on obtaining high search rankings. Because we compete in mostly niche markets such as local SEO and Small business SEO our site benefits more from fresh quality comments than from link juice. Therefore we are willing to give ours away…. for a price that is, and no I am not buying or selling links with this offer.
We are willing, as part of what I call “Scratch My Back Marketing” to exchange Do Follow Anchor Text Links for useful comments. Your comments have to be relevant to the post that you are commenting on and they must be a minimum of 20 words in length to qualify.
I will not allow links to porn, gambling, or one page marketing sites. Your blog needs to have real content and not just be a collection of RSS feeds. I check these things out. If you try to game me I may use your comment but will not provide a link.
Note this: The blog has a PR of 3. However, within 20-30 days your comment moves off the home page and will likely land on a page with 0 PR. Having said that it should be noted that we are Do Follow and we use Comment and Keyword Luv.
We at Tucson SEO Solutions are officially requesting that you join the conversation here. That is, if you found that this post was at all interesting, useful, or perhaps you are just looking for a useful link. Then, I would like to entice you to comment by providing you with useful backlinks as part of what I call “Scratch My Back Marketing.”
We are now using the Scratch My Back Marketing plugin. This anti spam plugin simply requires that your comment be at least 150 characters in length or it is automatically rejected. It’s that simple. We are now forcing commenters to do what we were requesting for months on this blog! The blog also uses Keyword and Comment Luv. Please note that if you only include keyword your comment may be used put you will not obtain a link!
The Scratch My Back Marketing requires you to scratch this blog by leaving a useful comment. We then will provide you with an anchor text Do Follow Link. It’s all about win/win marketing. I am willing to exchange page rank for the bump that a fresh comment provides.
Are you ready to exchange comments for links?

Website 101 – Get Your Website Indexed Early
August 30, 2009
This is a feature that we are implementing with each post. It is here because we provide small business SEO solutions all across Arizona. At this time we would like to thank our friends and clients for their support. If you have landed here looking for our Internet marketing or SEO services in Prescott or Yuma, then please follow this SEO link.
Don’t Worry About Getting Your Website Indexed Early
This is one of the best pieces of advice I could ever offer to someone who is in the early stages of building a website. Do not wait until your site has been constructed and launched to start developing a link building program. Start the process now.
That’s right, most successful websites have a well structured link building program that they implement on a regular basis. What I am suggesting is that you start your link building efforts early, as in the very beginning.
Once you have established your domain name you need to point it to you name servers. Then put up an under construction page, but not just a generic page. This page should include the page title and description that will be used on the home page. You will then create an H-1 tagged header.
Now, you will need to write a paragraph or two explaining that you are open for business, what that business provides (keywords here), and that you are under construction. Make sure that you also include your targeted keyword phrase and contact information.
Now, start building links. It doesn’t really matter where you develop your links because this will likely be a learning curve for you. Try, a wide variety of options to see what suits you best. A good place to start would be social bookmarking sites, but with no content
The big benefit here is that your site will already be indexed by Google by the time it is launched. The secondary benefit is that you will have a fine tuned linking program in place. You don’t want to be putting a linking program in place while you are trying to manage a new website and run your business.

SEOQuake Rocks Our Little SEO World
August 29, 2009
SEOQuake has rocked my little SEO world for several months now. SEOQuake is one of those great little tools that is free and makes the website consultants life much easier. We Internet consultants do a lot of research, but this work can be very time consuming without the right tools. Well, for me SEOQuake is one of those tools.
We recommend this software to all of our clients as it is so easy to use. It’s a free FireFox download. It provides a wealth of competitive analysis information along with search results. Just turn it on and do a keyword search for your targeted words. Along with the search results it will provide you with information about how many links a website has. Then you can click on that link and can get more detailed information on who is linking to your competitors through Yahoo’s siteexplorer tool if you click on the Yahoo link results.
I can’t remember where I came across this software. Some blogger did me a big favor by posting a review, so it’s now time to share this tool with you. SEOQuake collects SEO relevant information about any website that you are visiting and then displays them in a toolbar. It collects linking information from all the major search engines. It provides a websites source code in one click.
The wealth of information at your fingertips is amazing. It also includes a line through feature to indicate if a website is using “no follow” on it’s links. If you are blogging for links this will save you buckets of time. This feature alone has saved me hundreds of hours while doing research. I could have never easily put together our old Do Follow Lists of Lists without it.
Another great feature is revealed when you do a Google search. Under every search result it provides a dozen or so links that provide easy access to each websites details. It shows the sites PR, the age of the site, and many other valuable features… And did I say that it’s Free!
Are you ready to get your website headed in the right direction?

Is There Such A Thing As A Perfect Link ?
August 28, 2009
This is a feature that we are implementing with each post. It is here because we provide small business SEO solutions all across Arizona. At this time we would like to thank our friends and clients for their support. If you have landed here looking for our Internet marketing or SEO services in Peoria or Scottsdale, then please follow this SEO link.
Is There Such A Thing As A Perfect Link ?
That seems like a reasonable question to ask. After all there has been so much conflicting information written about links. We figured that since our audience comes here for small business SEO solutions they could use some clarification on the subject.
The perfect link from our perspective is:
A perfect link would be from a site with high Page Rank. The problem here is that many of our readers don’t understand PR. So here’s the skinny on PR. It is a grade that Google places on websites that correlates to trust. The scale goes from n/a through 10, with 10 being the highest score. You can find out the PR of any website if you are using a Google toolbar with Page Rank enabled.
That’s the simple answer for PR. So let’s look at a few other aspects of the perfect link.
The perfect link should offer some benefit to the person that is actually clicking on that link. So it is a good idea that the link should be industry specific or related to your website in some way. A good example of this is a doctor in Tucson linking to a doctor in Chicago. It should also include the targeted keyword phrase related to the site that it is pointed to in the anchor. In this case you might want to link to a page about flu prevention. That link then might read “flu prevention methods.”
That links should be “Do Follow” thus it will pass link juice. You control this on your website, but you can not control it on another website. If the link is what as know as “No follow” it will have no impact on search rankings but may generate traffic to your website.
The perfect link has to be “Do Follow,”and It certainly would be nice if that link came from a high PR page and with anchor text that matched the pages content. Finally, it should be in a related business field.
What’s your perfect link?

The Scratch My Back Marketing requires you to scratch this blog by leaving a useful comment of at least 20 words or more. Your comment should be relevant to the post. My scratch is that you will receive a Do Follow anchor text link (Keyword Luv.) And if you have a blog with an RSS feed enabled you will receive an extra permalink back to your blog via Comment Luv.
It’s all about win/win marketing. I am willing to exchange page rank for the bump that a fresh comment provides.

Beginners SEO – Quality Page Titles Rule
August 28, 2009
If you have been around the SEO ballpark a time or two this information is going to be redundant. However, this blog is geared towards the local entrepreneur that requires small business SEO solutions. Before we begin this post, we are assuming that you already have chosen your websites targeted keyword phrases.
After selecting your keyword phrases you will need to know what to do with them. This is where the page title becomes hugely important. First off you need to know that every website page should have a page title, most do but some don’t. The page title is similar to a book title and it defines what your web page is all about for the search engines.
Get this wrong and everything else that you do is basically a waste of time and effort. You can locate any websites page title by looking in the uppermost left hand corner of your browser. If your websites url is listed in this area this is a really bad thing. It means that your web page has no title and will never be found in the search results unless you are specifically searching for your domain name.
The second greatest error related to page titles is this. Many websites are created using default settings provided by many website building programs. These default settings often label your pages as Home, About Us, or Contact. These are perfectly good navigation tags to describe your pages to your visitors. However, they are of little use to the search engines. Do a Google search for home and it will produce 7 billion results. Your site has little chance to be found this way. It also does not describe what your web page is about.
The page titles are part of the source code that the search engine reads that do not appear as content on your pages. Essentially each webpage has two titles. One is primarily used for navigating around your website by your visitors. It is part of your navigation menu. The page title that appears in the source code is used to define your web page for the search engines. Technically, both page titles appear in the source code. It is the web page “title” that we are discussing today.
The page title is the SEO equivalent to location, location, and location used in real estate to describe the most important item in real estate selling. The same is true for the page title if you want to be positioned high in the search engine rankings. There are a few things that you need to know about creating effective page titles.
You must begin to think of website page titles as book titles. You should also realize that you have two distinctly different audiences that will be reading your titles. They are the search engines and potential customers. You need to also know that Google limits that amount of characters that it presents in its search results to around 65 characters and spaces. Your title can go longer but that portion will not appear in the results. The words decrease in importance as the title gets longer. So the pages most important keywords should appear first.
When search engines deliver their search results they include three pieces of information. The first piece of information is the page title. Roughly about 45% of searchers use this title to decide if they will visit your website. The second or middle piece of information is called the snippet and another 45% of searchers use this information when choosing if they will visit a site. The final 10% will of searchers will use the web pages url as their determining factor. So your page title is your first and best opportunity to make a good impression.
I struggle with this sites Home pages title. I have changed it many times and then observed the results. It currently reads Local Phoenix SEO Tucson Search Engine Optimization Services Solutions. I just did a bit of what I call Shampoo SEO where I re-asses the effectiveness of my SEO efforts. Yes, the SEO guy challenges himself to be better. You should review yours every 30 days. I had been targeting the Phoenix Market with my blog. While it was often on the first page of Google it wasn’t getting many click trough’s. The site is now back onto the first page for Phoenix SEO but the url reads .com and not .com/blog. Only time will tell if the url change will make a difference in how many visitors this keyword phrase will produce.
If you want to be successful at internet marketing you need to be always testing and improving your blog or website.
You also need to keep in mind that your page title does not need to read like a sentence. It is wise to avoid any throw away words such as how, the, if, and so on. You also should avoid using commas and symbols such as @,$, or /. If you look up at the upper left hand corner of your browser you will see that we have titled this page Beginners SEO Search Engine Optimization Services Solutions.
What we have done here is to tell the search engines this is what this page is about. Now, this is where this all gets very interesting indeed. Any combination of these words may be used by a potential search engine user. If these targeted keyword phrases also appear in the page title, on the web page, and in your page description tag your chances of appearing in the search results increase dramatically.
The above example includes many combination’s that we might have a reasonable chance of appearing in the search results for. This is partially based on the number of websites that have these words on their pages. We have no reasonable expectation to place high in the search results for the terms search engine optimization or SEO. SEO alone produces 200 million results in Google and search engine optimization produces 76 million results. The last time I checked we ranked 461 for SEO.
The keywords beginners SEO produces a mere 1.7 million results. Now, if we wanted to go after this combination of words we would have a reasonably good chance of obtaining first page placement in the Google search results. You will ultimately want to target keyword phrases that do not have a lot of competition, but are words that someone might actually use to find your business. This process is called using the long tail, but that’s a story for another day. Oh, yes, whatever you do, don’t use the same page title more than once!

Obsolete SEO/Website Marketing Practices
August 27, 2009
The first obsolete practice that comes to mind is the use of submission services. I have written about this before as being a waste of money, and it is. Since Google, Yahoo, and MSN make up nearly 93% of the search volume in the U.S. these search engines are where your efforts need to be focused. The process is very easy and it’s free. Yet, I just down loaded a free demo product that includes search engine submission services. The product is called Traffic Bug it is included in The 30 Day Challenge. It also include submissions to non human edited directories. There is a positive here. The software claims to be submitting to bookmarking sites. That’s not such a bad things if these sites have any traffic or if they are Do follow.
Like I said it was free software and I wanted to see how legitimate this 30 Day challenge is. I will reserve that opinion for later. It’s just that many programs that assist in internet marketing, and specifically niche marketing, rely on lots of obsolete practices. The search engines really only give value to links from human edited directories and I doubt that these programs aren’t using many if any of these.
Then there is the search engine submission option. This lame duck keeps making the rounds. Its so old that it was human it could say that its had an AARP card for decades. These submission services saved enormous amount of time and thus provided a valuable service during the early years of the internet. Every thing changed with when Google built a better search engine. That was way back in the last century folks. Google, Yahoo, and MSN have dominated search for some times now. The Ask search engine is a bit player with few % points of the market. Bounden that it really doesn’t matter. AOL gets a few points but actually a search engine. It’s results come from Google.
So there you have it two obsolete practices being promoted as solid marketing methods. The program does have some value in that it can also choose to automatically submit to Bookmarking and RSS directories. Now, these two have some real merit if they are executed properly. At this point two of the four submission options with this software are obsolete.
Social bookmarking is a valid option if the sites that are getting submitted to have some page rank. That means Google is likely to be actively crawling these sites. There is also the risk that their are a fair amount of these sites are on auto pilot. I have seen probably 6 – 8 bookmarking sites this week that were accepting submissions to adult sites. That why I like to personally visit these sites
The services is free so I thought I would check it out. It also includes submitting to directories which is basically an obsolete practice as well. If the directory is human edited then it is a waste of time because anyone can get in.
There was a day, way back before Google hit the scene when using a submission service made sense. Heck, there were hundreds of search engines vying for attention. So one stop shopping made sense, but now the practice is obsolete.
Stuffing your keyword Meta Tag with words unrelated to your website. This practice involved using the hot search topic of the day and placing it in the Keyword Meta tag. Websites would include words like porno or Britney Spears, and it worked for a while. Yes, SEO used to be the wild wild west on of internet. Anything and everything was used. Search engines back then were not very sophisticated. They also used to hide text by making it the same color as the background. This way the text could only be read by the search engines.
Then when it was discovered that links played a vital role in the big picture all kinds of linking schemes began to surface. Even today, people offer three way linking schemes that by the very structure are doomed to fail over time. The internet is full of all sorts of linking schemes.
People searching for porno often would end up at sites like, “Dogs Are Our Business” which was a pet grooming service. The old-timers, as in pre this century, still love to wax poetically about these past adventures. But as search technologies developed these shady tools became obsolete.

A New Kind Of Spam?
August 26, 2009
Today, I discovered something new in my spam filter. It was a series of comments from different websites that at first glance looked like a trackback. They all ended in mid sentence using three periods like this…
What struck me is that for the most part the comments made sense and were relevant to SEO. They even included references to SEOmoz.org and Search Engine Watch, both well respected sites. However, they were not clever enough to fool the Askimet spam filter. Even if they had our comments are moderated and we always catch this garbage.
All four of these spam comments, arrived back to back and were easy to spot when I cleaned out the spam filter. Out of curiosity I visited each of these websites and they were generic blogs that had no comments. However, I noticed that they all had a PR of 3. None of these blogs had much of anything to link to as far as quality content goes.
What this shows is that this kind of spam does indeed work for these sites at least in gaining some PR. Which is sad, but it is what it is. So if you see these names appear in your comments you can be assured that it is from a spammer.

Things to do for your boy friend

I know this will not make much of a difference, but I can only tolerate so much of this crap before I have to speak out. It also shows how easy it is to game Google’s Page Rank. These sites then pass link juice along to other sites that they own.
Update 08/18/2009 I no longer have to deal with this fake auto spam after I installed Tan Tan Noodles it all went away. You might want to consider adding it yourself!

Website Are Like A High Maintenence Girlfriend
August 23, 2009
This is another post that originated on the old static website and it is I believe with recycling and updating. I have recently suggested that successful websites are like a high maintenance girlfriend. My business partner edited to read mate or friend. Now, I’m going with the original concept. From my perspective this is so true. A high maintenance woman or man demands a lot of attention, and especially attention to detail. A website that acquires high search engine rankings and traffic requires similar attention. These sites need lots of it to continue to stay productive and to rank highly.
A high maintenance woman or man requires daily attention to maintain a successful and peaceful relationship. If you are willing to pay the price a relationship with a high maintenance person can be very rewarding and seldom is it dull.
A successful website is no different. It demands your time and effort that goes way beyond checking emails or traffic stats. The point here is that if you want a successful relationship with your website you have to be prepared to pay the price of your time, money, or both.
Keeping your visitors happy is extremely important. You need to make sure your site is user friendly. Many a potential customer will never reach your website because of slow loading pages. You have about two seconds to accomplish loading. I call it the Google effect. Web surfers are so used to Google providing search results instantly. They then expect this quickness from all websites all the time. We have all experienced this. You do your Google search and you see a promising website. You then click onto that link and wait and wait some more. Then you simply give up and try another site. I wish I had a dollar for every slow loading site that I abandoned. I could then afford to get into the game of Cash for clunkers.
The problem isn’t limited to small business websites that may have been home built. They actually often load very quickly because they don’t have many people visiting at the same time or they aren’t loaded with a lot of graphics. Retail e-commerce sites are notoriously slow loading for a variety of reasons. There are literally billions of dollars lost annually due to slow loading pages.
The more web savvy your visitor the quicker they leave. Imagine if your website is slow loading for a cable connection, and then imagine how slow the process is for DSL, dial-up service, or for someone using a notebook or a Wi-Fi connection.
Just like a high maintenance relationship where detail is important, detail is important if you want a successful productive relationship. When is the last time you checked to see if your contact form is still working. When did you last check to make sure that all of your links are working?
Are you properly maintaining your website?

Websites Are Like Apple Pies
August 22, 2009
This is one of my favorite posts. It was originally posted to our site when it was a static site. I like it so much that I update and recycle it occasionally.
Today, we are looking at the correlation between websites and apple pies. Software advances have made building a website like baking a pie, in that it can be done in an evening. I done this on a couple occasions myself with both pies and websites.
However, motivation alone does not make a good apple pie or a useful website. When making a good apple pie you need all the basic ingredients and the knowledge of how to mix them properly. Mixing the ingredients properly makes all the difference when baking a pie. The same is true about building a website. Sites also require some basics such as layout, navigation, and fresh quality content and that’s just to keep your visitors happy.
Getting the website to work with the search engines to acquire traffic through high search rankings is a whole other proposition. Many an attractive site has withered along the Internet super highway due to lack of traffic. Building a website is like making a pie is relatively easy these days but that doesn’t mean that either will be any good.
Just like that apple pie sitting on the baker’s shelf, it will never sell if hungry customers can’t find it. Even the best looking pie, if the flavor isn’t there, will be rejected after the first bite. A website can suffer a similar fate, if it fails to meet or exceed the visitor’s expectations. You may have all the right ingredients but fail the taste test.
If you’ve ever watched the Food Channel then you know exactly what we mean. Give five chefs the same ingredients and someone will always produce a super pie, some pies will be ok, and others will disappoint. The same can be said about a website It may look great but it may fail to meet expectations.
Are you ready to create a tasty highly trafficked websites that deliver results?

This Is The Sites Second Birthday And The Blogs First
August 21, 2009
Its is amazing that we have come this far. For the first year of existence we had a static website. I had one page that I used for daily updates, but other than that it was basically a static site. It was hosted through Microsoft. Actually the site never cost me a penny for the first year.
The site was created through Microsoft’s Office Live website. The domain name, the web hosting, and the site building tool were all free for the first year. I was able to create a basic website that was easy to optimize. Although you could not directly manipulate the HTML it did allow you to manage Page Titles, Page Descriptions, and keywords. The site was generic but good enough not to look like a DIY project.
However, it was not attractive enough to draw much attention or links. I did manage to build around a 1,000 links that first year. We were able to become a leader in the Google SERP’s for Tucson SEO and we usually ranked about # 3 for Tucson Search Engine Optimization. However, we struggled to get traction for the other keywords that we targeted. We were never able to get higher than # 33 for the much coveted search “local SEO.”
Then at the beginning of year two we transitioned over to the Content Management System, WordPress. Now, we could really crank up our marketing efforts and provide something worth linking too. Over the blogs first year we added about and additional 12,000 links. However, we now only have about 10,000 back links. We lost about 3,000 links from most of the forums that we had used most frequently. These forums became something else, closed, or drastically altered their signature policy.
The biggest transition is that we have transitioned from a regional SEO player to a national player. We have always ranked extremely well for the following searches Tucson SEO, Tucson Search Engine Optimization, and Internet Marketing Tucson. We currently rank both #1 and #2 for all of these.
Today I checked these keyword phrases in Google and this is what I discovered.
Local SEO #6
Local SEO Services #1 and #2
Local SEO Solutions #1 and #2
SEO Solutions #3 and #4
Business SEO Solutions #2 and #3
Small Business SEO Solutions #1 and #2
Geo-targeted SEO #2 and #3
Geo-targeting SEO #4 and #5
Niche SEO #4
Niche SEO Services #2 and #3
Niche SEO Solutions #1 and #2
Holistic SEO #8
Arizona SEO Solutions # 2 and #3
Now, some of the mentioned searches are not very competitive and we like it that way, but they do represent various ways of expressing the services that we offer. Most importantly they produce search traffic.
These ones we are no longer promoting these following keyword phrases but spam comments are keeping these alive. I post the comments and then respond to them. They mostly thank me for lists that no longer exist and I point this out. This produces enough fresh content to keep these pages ranking well. I laugh every time someone thanks me for the list that is no longer there.
Do Follow Blog Lists #1 out of 110 Million results
Do Follow Blogs #4 out of 141 Million results
Do Follow Forums # 1 out of 137 Million results
Over the past year our website traffic has also increased 700 % from year one to year two. That really might be the most amazing statistic of them all. The blog has generated only three negative mentions that I am aware of. We use Google Alerts to monitor this so it is unlikely that we missed the negative posts. That is fairly amazing. Success usually brings out a certain amount of detractors from around the blogosphere.
The number of comments that actually got posted was 1286. I likely deleted 6 times as many. When I started out it was a while before anyone noticed. It wasn’t until the Do Follow List made the first page of Google did we start getting comments. So I am very pleased with a little more than three comments a day.
I am usually a goal oriented person but I didn’t have any written down for the WordPress area. I did have a silent goal to take to take the Do Follow List to the first page of the Google results. I quietly hoped to take 12 other keyword phrases would land onto the first page. That turned out to be a huge challenge. Targeting a link building program around so many keywords is very challenging.
That task was made easier by the fact that my life partner, Geri became an active business partner after I scored a sweet one year management contract. She became the official link builder for our clients and I built links and wrote the blog posts. She also keep the lists current which was on easy task.
The year concluded with a total of 275 posts. This is a monumental feat for me. I am not the best writer in the world but things did improve overtime. I did experience fatigue around the time of the national elections. Lately, the business has picked up which makes blogging more difficult.
This year will be all about establishing goals. I did have one goal from last year that ended up to be unrealistic. I wanted to launch a new website every 6 weeks. The goal was to have a SEO site in the top 100 markets in 5 years. We did launch 5 city specific sites that all rank #1 but generate few leads and no business. Did I say that I am a dreamer.
Now, my goals are a bit more realistic for the coming year. I hope to sell our cleaning services website and our Mountain View SEO site. I plan on launching a local social media site, an SEO site that targets the city of Phoenix. I will eventually complete our Holistic SEO site. I would also like to increase our billable services. Well, that’s our story and I’m sticking to it!

SEO By Google – The SEO Guide
August 20, 2009
That’s right Google has created an SEO Starter Guide that clearly explains the fundamentals of search engine optimization, and it free. But before I go any further, let’s take a look back at Google’s change of heart concerning SEO. That’s right, change of heart. The fact that Google is now embracing SEO represents a 180 degree change for Google.
Back in the day, in a not so distant past Google was at odds with SEO and considered them spammers. Old timers in this business love to tell how easy it was to manipulate the search engines to gain high rankings. That put the SEO community in direct conflict with the search engines. At that time search optimizing a website meant cramming a bunch of keywords in the Meta tags. That morphed to cramming a bunch of keywords into the content. Then it again morphed into a focus on links when it was discovered that Google’s algorithm was based on backlinks. Since our efforts were considered to be spamming Google was forced to adjust their algorithms accordingly and continually.
Google’s spokesman on all matters concerning Search Engine Optimization, Matt Cutts, is part of Google’s anti spam unit. This shows us all what Google has thought about the whole SEO industry. Only recently has Google began to change its position. A few months ago they adjusted their webmaster guidelines (July 2008) to reflect a more positive view on SEO. Then a few months later (October 2008) they created their own search engine optimization starter guide. As our industry has matured Google has finally embraced our services as legitimate.
This change is good for everyone involved. Their actions have the effect of legitimizing our industry, which has had a checkered past. SEO can be very confusing for a beginner because there are a myriad of opinions and until now there has been no clear direction provided by the search engines on the best practices. That has finally come to a screeching halt.
I spend a fair amount of time on a couple of dozen industry related forums. I often suggest that people visit Google webmaster guidelines to get the true Google view of things. This is especially true when it comes to discussions on link building. Now, I have a reference for SEO related questions. Yesterday, I linked about a dozen forum comments directly to this document. In other words, this is what Google has to say about SEO.
What Google fails to mention is that it places length restrictions on Page Titles and Page Descriptions that appear in the search results. Generally Page Titles should not exceed 65 characters and spaces. Page Descriptions should should not exceed 160.
I am now, planning on incorporating this starter guide as part of my hand-outs at our seminars. Thank you Google.

How Would You Like To Acquire A Free Do Follow Link From Google?
August 19, 2009
No, I have not been drinking any electric Kool-aid nor have I been smoking any wacky tobacco. I am actually reticent to let out this little secret for the Google Gods may realize their error and make adjustments to their site and correct this oversight. But if I don’t mention it someone else will. So here we go.
First off Google Knol stands for a measure of knowledge. It was developed to allow highly educated individuals to write about there areas of expertise. You simply register and begin to post. In many ways it is like the website Scribd.com. It seems to be a little bit of wiki and Blogger rolled into one.
Late last month (October 2008) Google quietly opened its Knol service to the general public. There hasn’t been a lot written about the subject lately. However, I was visiting another obscure blog when I saw a post about Knol. So I took the time to visit and to sign up and to start posting. That’s when I noticed something unusual.
The article that I had read noted that Google seemed to be giving a lot of authority to articles posted on Knol. It went on to state that Knol could be used effectively to acquire a first page listing in the Google SERP’s for niche keyword searches. Since Niche SEO markets are our bread and butter we figured that we should take a look around.
I surf the web and most of the time I do so using with SEOQuake enabled. It will indicate if a link is no follow or do follow. We noticed that links to the posters profile were no follow, but the permalink was a do follow link. This seemed odd to me so I dug a little deeper into Knol and started reading some of the posts.
Much to my amazement and shock I discovered that links embedded in these Knol’s were actually “Do Follow” links. Google has forced no follow links on blogs and most major sites that are social media in nature. It has made life very difficult for many websites to gain links that pass link juice that affects their algorithm and thus the search results. So the fact that they are not applying these principals to their own website seems a bit hypocritical to me. I am certain that many others will agree with me.
Now here is where this discovery begins to go south. I have 2 choices to make here. I could simply re-write my hundred or so posts and place them in Knol and snag a bunch of do follow links from Google and wait until someone else brings this to everyone’s attention. Then watch this benefit dissolve or I can bring it to your attention and see how long it takes for Google to re-act. Well, if you are reading this then I decided to share what I discovered.
Now, nine months later Google’s Knol is still do Follow and there has hardly been a whimper from the SEO community… Now, that is indeed odd!
Speaking of sharing…

Creating Fresh Content For A Static Website
August 18, 2009
This is a question that we hear often at our SEO and website training seminars. A static website is a site that was not created to be updated. These sites suffer in the search rankings because they have nothing new to offer the search engines. You see, search engines like fresh content.
It is much easier to obtain and maintain high search rankings if you update your website on a regular basis. The easiest way to provide fresh content is to place a blog on your website. However, many small business website owners don’t want anything to do with a blog. They either do not understand what a blog is or does or they are unwilling to manage a blog. Blogs do require time to implement properly.
One solution is already available to website owners who use a newsletter to market their business. Let’s say you have a monthly newsletter and you write the articles for this newsletter over a one month period and then email this your readers.
What we suggest is that you place these articles on your website as they are written. Then pull these articles into your newsletter when you are ready to email them. Then you start the process all over again. Depending on how you have your web hosting set up this could be a simple or a very difficult process. These article should includes links to your main sales pages to be most effective. That way when the search engines crawl this new content they will follow these links to your other pages.
To complement this process you will need to have am XML site map on your site. This sitemap will need to be updated when you add new pages to assure that it gets crawled and properly indexed.
The same process can be used for an FAQ page. The whole idea here is too generate new content on your website. If you choose the FAQ page for updating make sure that you include links to your sales pages.
Most quality web hosts allow you to readily edit your web pages through a file manager. Whenever, you are editing websites files first copy them into a text edit such as notepad, in case you experience a problem when saving your files. Once you have saved your updates then visit your website to view the changes. You may need to refresh your browser first. If you experience a problem you will have a saved copy in notepad to copy back into your file manager.
Some web host companies require that you use an FTP client to load your updated files. If this is the case then this process is best left to an experienced webmaster.

SEO Is Like Shampoo!
August 16, 2009
As I have said many times over I believe that analogies are a very good tool when making a point about search engine optimization. If you know anything about SEO you may be scratching your heads a bit. If you are visiting in search of small business SEO solutions you may also be scratching your head as well and wondering “What is he thinking? ”
Let’s take a look at what we know about search engine optimization. SEO is initially about developing keyword phrases. As the internet has grown it is now extremely difficult to acquire first page ranking on Google for one or two keyword searches. We are not saying it can’t be done, that would be a foolish statement, but it is very difficult except for very narrow niches. Of course it all depends on how competitive your market is.
So what then does SEO have in common with Shampoo? Every shampoo bottle that I have ever used tells you this “rinse and repeat”. I believe you might want to consider repeating the SEO process after lets say 30 and 60 days after implementing it. Everyone one involved with SEO attempts to make an educated guess about what works and what doesn’t work as far as keyword phrases are concerned, but we could easily miss the mark or market. Your analytics program will tell you if you SEO is working.
I like talking about my own mistakes so that others may learn from them. When I launched this website the focus was on the keyword phrase organic search engine optimization in Tucson, because our services are based on organic search results delivered from Tucson. However, the 30, 60 and 90 day review revealed that we were not getting any traffic for that keyword phrase. That’s right we ranked # 1 but we didn’t get any Google traffic.
So we did a little SEO shampooing of our website and removed all references to organic SEO. We rinsed and repeated. Now, in fairness we should have stuck with some mentioning of organic SEO, but at that time we were a bit impatient.
I realized that while many nationally might understand what organic SEO is. I figured the only people likely to be searching for organic SEO were likely not buyers but members of this industry. So I decided to focus on the more realistic searches such as Tucson SEO. Since this was part of our company and domain name we had a built in advantage.
I continued to rinse and repeat every 30 days or so. Recently, we have begun to brand ourselves as providing Holistic SEO (Fall 2008) and we will be adding another page that reflects what we discovered in one of our rinse cycles. We thought Holistic SEO best describes our approach to creating websites that convert visitors into customers.
That was last year results. Our more recent SEO shampoo experience discovered that we were ranking highly for searches related to marketing and link building. I was not specifically targeting these markets. However, I discovered that we were ranking well for un-targeted searches. So I did a little SEO shampooing and we soon soared in four other keyword markets. Most of these changes were minor but may have a major impact on rankings.
Here is a suggestion that you can take to the bank. If your web page is stuck on page two try this. Add an H-1 tag to your page that includes your primary targeted keyword phrase for that page. Then a build a dozen Do Follow anchor text links that include your keyword phrase in the anchor text. Do this on highly crawled sites. Then check your ranking results in about two weeks. Once the pages that include your links get crawled the search engines will discover your page with the H-1 tag. It will get crawled and bingo you win! Don’t believe me… Well just try it and report back.
Have you rinsed and repeated lately?

Link Building: Anchor Text Style
August 15, 2009
Today, if your reading this now, this is way a old post but worth mentioning again. I have updated it to reflect what is going on now. While searching for resources for our “Do Follow List OF Lists” (no longer exists) my partner discovered a blog, http://www.affiliatewatcher.com. The blogger used an image of someone who was ranting about Do Follow Blogs. It has an eye-popping graphic of someone pulling out there hair, that I really liked.
Specifically, he was going off on blogs that have the “u comment i follow” logo on them. This logo was created by Randa Clay to indicate that the blog would pass link juice for any link resulting from commenting.
This person was ranting about how the blog owners should remove these logos if they are on longer relevant. When we are blogging for links we use SEOQuake which produces a line through links that are “No Follow.” So this doesn’t bother us much. There are lots of reason why this might be occurring. It could simply be the plugin is no longer working after an upgrade or hasn’t been set up correctly I’m also sure some of this is intentional, if not most.
What really got my attention was when he continues his rant about those people who don’t use their real names in the name field of the blogs comment section. He was calling it spam. This is where this story really begins. You see, link building is its most effective and powerful when it produces an anchor text with the link. The name field of blog comments creates that anchor text link. When the anchor text can not be aligned with the websites content, the search engines devalue the link. If I go to a blog and use Boris that link is useless in gaining higher search rankings.
When the anchor text matches the content you now have a very valuable link. So for example when we use “Tucson SEO” in the name field it doesn’t mean that we are spamming (too me.) It merely means that we want the link to be given a keyword attribute that is related to our website. When I use the name Boris, the search engines can not match the name with this websites content and the link is less useful. Now, each blog sets its own rules on the comment policy. You really have to pay attention here or the comment will be deleted. I delete a half dozen or so comments each day over this issue.
Like anything good it can be abused. This is a growing trend that you can expect to see more often. Getting links is becoming more difficult almost daily. Thus we are seeing an increase of keywords being used in the name field. I believe a perfect balance can be found by using the Keyword Luv plugin. It uses both a name and a keyword phrase when used properly. We use it here. That being said, everyday I get comments that just include the keywords. Since these commenters can not follow directions they will never get a link. I may use the comment but without a backlink included.
Many people have a real sense of community in the blogosphere. They grumble every time they see a keyword or keyword phrase used in the blog comments, just as this writer was doing. They believe that your real name should be used exclusively. That’s ok, but it only creates problems and frustrations. I have tried to find a happy balance by using Keyword Luv, but most people still will not take advantage of it. They will never get links here. We also require a 20 word comment but that gets ignored as well.
These commenters fail to realize with the advent of “No Follow” and Google’s crusade against paid links it has made acquiring links much more difficult. This shrinks the opportunities to acquire links. So we in the SEO and SEM industries must make the best possible use of the links that we are acquiring. That’s why you are seeing an increase in this practice. I believe in ethical link building and I promote leaving quality comments that follow a blogs comment policy. Yet, everyday people abuse this privilege here. This is why so many blogs go back to No Follow. Way to many people don’t care or they don’t pay enough attention.
Now, having said that, I am letting you know that we are working on a plugin that will eliminate drive by comments. This should help a whole lot of bloggers! Stay tuned for this one is could potentially be huge.
All good things can get abused so lets make it a point not too abuse link building opportunities.

Niche SEO – Search Engine Optimization A Success Story
August 14, 2009
In December of 2007 we were written-up in a local newspaper where we explained what a website owner needs to know to be successful. The president of a niche manufacturing company where I had once worked read the article and called. He reasoned because I already knew his company, its products, and its markets, that we would be well suited to work on their website. What we found when we reviewed the site was amazing. The website included 56 pages of which only 22 could actually be reached from the website. Of those 22 pages six of them were incoherent ramblings. That left 16 usable pages.
The website had a flash header on an industrial site that sells expensive equipment used by other manufactures. The home page included two videos and about 100 words of text. There was no SEO on the site at all. Little had changed in 8 years of the sites existence. They had never received any email leads. They were using PPC to generate traffic. We knew that we had a very good chance of doing very well for three or four word searches for their products. Yes, we love long tail keyword phrases.
When the site was re-launched, they quickly moved onto the Google’s first SERP’s for searches such as industrial dust equipment or industrial blasting equipment. In fact they are on Google’s first page over 15 times. Yes, traffic increased as well. Recently, we had a meeting with this client to discuss some updates to the website. The owner informed me that the website is working. He stated “we are finally getting contacts from the website, something that we never did before.” I should note that when I got home I did a happy dance.
Finally, after eight years, a good clean design and solid SEO is producing results. So it just goes to show that a little quality SEO can go a long way for any niche manufacturer. The beauty of using long tail keyword phrases for this group is that these visitors are not casual “social media” visitors. No, just the opposite they are highly targeted visitors that need, want, and desire your products. Eventually, as in one month, the site was ranking on the first page of Google for 31 keyword phrases.
The real beauty for me is I have a long history with this company. They make products that are environmentally friendly and have been doing this for a long time, way back when it wasn’t popular. They are great people and their products can actually save lives. You see dust can be explosive and kills dozens every year in our nation.
You can visit the website at http://www.envirosystemsllc.com. We no longer manage this website, but it is still a good example of how you can own niche markets with good basic SEO and link building.

Link Building – Why We Don’t Use Non Human Edited Directories
August 14, 2009
Using directories to build backlinks to your website was once a very useful website link building practice. If you are not a student of the website marketing community you might still think it is a vital useful tool. Just go to any SEO or webmaster forum and you will see dozens of threads about free directories and submission tools.
Many of us have known for some time that backlinks from directories have been devalued by the search engines for some time now. But like anything questionable in this industry it is best to get Google’s opinion on any subject. The best source of acceptable practices is Google webmaster guidelines.
These guidelines are an SEO bible of sorts. The guidelines offer a very clear picture of what is good website behavior. Until recently, Google only recommended two directories and they are both human edited directories. This should have been a hint that Google no longer values these mostly useless links.
However, in early 2008 Google did recommend the free DMOZ directory and the paid Yahoo directory. This was because they were human edited and appeared to be spam proof. That has changed with Google removing its reference to these directories in late 2008. For us this is a very clear indication that Google does not value directory links.
I have been trying to explain on forums for about a year that Google has devalued directory links. I have meet with fierce resistance until this recent development. It is somewhat amazing how people get certain web based marketing techniques ingrained in their marketing efforts and have a difficult time giving them up. There have been multiple video’s produced by Google representatives on this subject.
What it all boils down to is this. Almost all of the easy links building methods have become obsolete. The reality is that link building has become a much more difficult and time consuming task. This is why we are such a big proponent of creating great content that is worthy of linking too and the use of ethical link building practices.
Are you still using non human edited directory submissions?

Websites That Work: Part 1
August 13, 2009
Everyone who owns a website wants to increase traffic to their site. They rightly, or wrongly, believe that increased traffic will produce increased leads and business. However, most of these people never consider “is my website ready for prime time.” I have been contacted by potential clients that stated “all I want is to increase traffic.” I explain in a short presentation why they might not benefit by just increasing visitors. If at that point they still only want more traffic I politely decline to do business with them.
All your marketing and optimization efforts may be wasted if your website is dysfunctional. Many of your visitors will abandon your website before they ever arrive if your pages are slow in loading. Slow loading pages are the kiss of death for any website. This problem is often related to your images or graphics that are used. Another obstacle maybe related to the website hosting package that you purchased. You may not have enough bandwidth for your websites traffic.
Let’s first consider the slow loading page due to content. This is usually a result of a page that is loaded with animation, graphics, and images. All of these dramatically slow down the opening of a web page. Consider replacing them with Keyword rich content. Remember at this time, search engines can not read graphics or pictures. So you are better off replacing these with text that includes your Keywords presented as Keyword phrases (Two or more keywords combined.)
The other reason your pages are loading slowly is a lack of bandwidth. You might want to think of bandwidth as the road that leads to your website. When too much traffic tries to access your website at once it might not be wide enough to handle the volume. Lack of bandwidth slows down traffic to a crawl. You should consider upgrading your hosting plan. Usually, a few more dollars spent on more bandwidth will resolve this problem. If you share a server with other sites, a common practice your site may be slowed by demands placed on the server by other sites.
Remember, not everyone has a cable connection. So If your website is slow loading with cable just imagine how slow it is with broadband connection.
