This Is The Sites Second Birthday And The Blogs First

August 21, 2009

Its is amazing that we have come this far. For the first year of existence we had a static website. I had one page that I used for daily updates, but other than that it was basically a static site. It was hosted through Microsoft. Actually the site never cost me a penny for the first year.

The site was created through Microsoft’s Office Live website. The domain name, the web hosting, and the site building tool were all free for the first year. I was able to create a basic website that was easy to optimize. Although you could not directly manipulate the HTML it did allow you to manage Page Titles, Page Descriptions, and keywords. The site was generic but good enough not to look like a DIY project.

However, it was not attractive enough to draw much attention or links. I did manage to build around a 1,000 links that first year. We were able to become a leader in the Google SERP’s for Tucson SEO and we usually ranked about # 3 for Tucson Search Engine Optimization. However, we struggled to get traction for the other keywords that we targeted. We were never able to get higher than # 33 for the much coveted search “local SEO.”

Then at the beginning of year two we transitioned over to the Content Management System, WordPress. Now, we could really crank up our marketing efforts and provide something worth linking too. Over the blogs first year we added about and additional 12,000 links. However, we now only have about 10,000 back links. We lost about 3,000 links from most of the forums that we had used most frequently. These forums became something else, closed, or drastically altered their signature policy.

The biggest transition is that we have transitioned from a regional SEO player to a national player. We have always ranked extremely well for the following searches Tucson SEO, Tucson Search Engine Optimization, and Internet Marketing Tucson. We currently rank both #1 and #2 for all of these.

Today I checked these keyword phrases in Google and this is what I discovered.

Local SEO #6

Local SEO Services #1 and #2

Local SEO Solutions #1 and #2

SEO Solutions #3 and #4

Business SEO Solutions #2 and #3

Small Business SEO Solutions #1 and #2

Geo-targeted SEO #2 and #3

Geo-targeting SEO #4 and #5

Niche SEO #4

Niche SEO Services #2 and #3

Niche SEO Solutions #1 and #2

Holistic SEO #8

Arizona SEO Solutions # 2 and #3

Now, some of the mentioned searches are not very competitive and we like it that way, but they do represent various ways of expressing the services that we offer. Most importantly they produce search traffic.

These ones we are no longer promoting these following keyword phrases but spam comments are keeping these alive. I post the comments and then respond to them. They mostly thank me for lists that no longer exist and I point this out. This produces enough fresh content to keep these pages ranking well. I laugh every time someone thanks me for the list that is no longer there.

Do Follow Blog Lists #1 out of 110 Million results

Do Follow Blogs #4 out of 141 Million results

Do Follow Forums # 1 out of 137 Million results

Over the past year our website traffic has also increased 700 % from year one to year two. That really might be the most amazing statistic of them all. The blog has generated only three negative mentions that I am aware of. We use Google Alerts to monitor this so it is unlikely that we missed the negative posts. That is fairly amazing. Success usually brings out a certain amount of detractors from around the blogosphere.

The number of comments that actually got posted was 1286. I likely deleted 6 times as many. When I started out it was a while before anyone noticed. It wasn’t until the Do Follow List made the first page of Google did we start getting comments. So I am very pleased with a little more than three comments a day.

I am usually a goal oriented person but I didn’t have any written down for the WordPress area. I did have a silent goal to take to take the Do Follow List to the first page of the Google results. I quietly hoped to take 12 other keyword phrases would land onto the first page. That turned out to be a huge challenge. Targeting a link building program around so many keywords is very challenging.

That task was made easier by the fact that my life partner, Geri became an active business partner after I scored a sweet one year management contract. She became the official link builder for our clients and I built links and wrote the blog posts. She also keep the lists current which was on easy task.

The year concluded with a total of 275 posts. This is a monumental feat for me. I am not the best writer in the world but things did improve overtime. I did experience fatigue around the time of the national elections. Lately, the business has picked up which makes blogging more difficult.

This year will be all about establishing goals. I did have one goal from last year that ended up to be unrealistic. I wanted to launch a new website every 6 weeks. The goal was to have a SEO site in the top 100 markets in 5 years. We did launch 5 city specific sites that all rank #1 but generate few leads and no business. Did I say that I am a dreamer.

Now, my goals are a bit more realistic for the coming year. I hope to sell our cleaning services website and our Mountain View SEO site. I plan on launching a local social media site, an SEO site that targets the city of Phoenix. I will eventually complete our Holistic SEO site. I would also like to increase our billable services. Well, that’s our story and I’m sticking to it!

SEO By Google – The SEO Guide

August 20, 2009

That’s right Google has created an SEO Starter Guide that clearly explains the fundamentals of search engine optimization, and it free. But before I go any further, let’s take a look back at Google’s change of heart concerning SEO. That’s right, change of heart. The fact that Google is now embracing SEO represents a 180 degree change for Google.

Back in the day, in a not so distant past Google was at odds with SEO and considered them spammers. Old timers in this business love to tell how easy it was to manipulate the search engines to gain high rankings. That put the SEO community in direct conflict with the search engines. At that time search optimizing a website meant cramming a bunch of keywords in the Meta tags. That morphed to cramming a bunch of keywords into the content. Then it again morphed into a focus on links when it was discovered that Google’s algorithm was based on backlinks. Since our efforts were considered to be spamming Google was forced to adjust their algorithms accordingly and continually.

Google’s spokesman on all matters concerning Search Engine Optimization, Matt Cutts, is part of Google’s anti spam unit. This shows us all what Google has thought about the whole SEO industry. Only recently has Google began to change its position. A few months ago they adjusted their webmaster guidelines (July 2008) to reflect a more positive view on SEO. Then a few months later (October 2008) they created their own search engine optimization starter guide. As our industry has matured Google has finally embraced our services as legitimate.

This change is good for everyone involved. Their actions have the effect of legitimizing our industry, which has had a checkered past. SEO can be very confusing for a beginner because there are a myriad of opinions and until now there has been no clear direction provided by the search engines on the best practices. That has finally come to a screeching halt.

I spend a fair amount of time on a couple of dozen industry related forums. I often suggest that people visit Google webmaster guidelines to get the true Google view of things. This is especially true when it comes to discussions on link building. Now, I have a reference for SEO related questions. Yesterday, I linked about a dozen forum comments directly to this document. In other words, this is what Google has to say about SEO.

What Google fails to mention is that it places length restrictions on Page Titles and Page Descriptions that appear in the search results. Generally Page Titles should not exceed 65 characters and spaces. Page Descriptions should should not exceed 160.

I am now, planning on incorporating this starter guide as part of my hand-outs at our seminars. Thank you Google.

We are ready to do it right… are you?

How Would You Like To Acquire A Free Do Follow Link From Google?

August 19, 2009

No, I have not been drinking any electric Kool-aid nor have I been smoking any wacky tobacco. I am actually reticent to let out this little secret for the Google Gods may realize their error and make adjustments to their site and correct this oversight. But if I don’t mention it someone else will. So here we go.

First off Google Knol stands for a measure of knowledge. It was developed to allow highly educated individuals to write about there areas of expertise. You simply register and begin to post. In many ways it is like the website Scribd.com. It seems to be a little bit of wiki and Blogger rolled into one.

Late last month (October 2008) Google quietly opened its Knol service to the general public. There hasn’t been a lot written about the subject lately. However, I was visiting another obscure blog when I saw a post about Knol. So I took the time to visit and to sign up and to start posting. That’s when I noticed something unusual.

The article that I had read noted that Google seemed to be giving a lot of authority to articles posted on Knol. It went on to state that Knol could be used effectively to acquire a first page listing in the Google SERP’s for niche keyword searches. Since Niche SEO markets are our bread and butter we figured that we should take a look around.

I surf the web and most of the time I do so using with SEOQuake enabled. It will indicate if a link is no follow or do follow. We noticed that links to the posters profile were no follow, but the permalink was a do follow link. This seemed odd to me so I dug a little deeper into Knol and started reading some of the posts.

Much to my amazement and shock I discovered that links embedded in these Knol’s were actually “Do Follow” links. Google has forced no follow links on blogs and most major sites that are social media in nature. It has made life very difficult for many websites to gain links that pass link juice that affects their algorithm and thus the search results. So the fact that they are not applying these principals to their own website seems a bit hypocritical to me. I am certain that many others will agree with me.

Now here is where this discovery begins to go south. I have 2 choices to make here. I could simply re-write my hundred or so posts and place them in Knol and snag a bunch of do follow links from Google and wait until someone else brings this to everyone’s attention. Then watch this benefit dissolve or I can bring it to your attention and see how long it takes for Google to re-act. Well, if you are reading this then I decided to share what I discovered.

Now, nine months later Google’s Knol is still do Follow and there has hardly been a whimper from the SEO community… Now, that is indeed odd!

Speaking of sharing…
