Is Google Putting Your Family Or Home Based Business At Risk

October 31, 2009

If you are a small home based business you may have never heard of Google’s Place Pages. Google Place Pages are part of Google Maps or what Google calls the Local Business Center (LBC.) Recent changes to these pages may be putting you and your family unnecessarily at risk.

Google’s LBC is more commonly known as the Google Maps. It allows local businesses to place a free listing in its maps. These maps are often included with Google’s searches that are local in nature. You don’t even need to have a website to list your business with local maps listings.

However, these listing may place you and your family at risk. When you click on a business that is listed in Google’s maps you are taken to what is called a Place Page. These pages provide more detailed information about a company. These pages also include such things as reviews, direction to your business, and more. Recently, Google has begun including a street view of your businesses location. This is great for a retail location. However, if you run your business from your home it may be placing you and your family at risk if you are using your homes address.

Do you really want a picture of your home in your business listing? That picture will show whatever was in front of your home when a Google van took a picture. That may include your kids, toys, or your personal vehicles. The problem is Google does not seem to offer a business opt out of street views of businesses. I have scoured the Help Forum to no avail. My inquiries have gone unanswered.

Here’s is how I know that you may be at risk if you are using your home address in Local maps. Our business is a home based and when I first listed the business with Google I used my exact home address. When you first sign up with Google’s Local Business Center it sends you a post card. That post card has your pin number for your account verification. That is why I originally used my home address. Then I basically overlooked changing the address.

Then, a few months later I had a business appointment with what turned out to be a very strange man. Since I work out of my home I usually meet clients at a local coffee shop (not Starbucks.) At this meeting I was glad that I was using this coffee shop. This guy really was a very scary character. He is the kind that I would not have ever invited to my home or would want to business with.

During the conversation I mentioned that I meet at coffee shops for safety reasons. The very scary man informed me that he knew where I lived because my address was listed in Google maps. Quickly, I was making a mental note to change my address. I thought that I would never want these man just showing up at my front door. That’s when he told me that he drove to my house. He said “I pulled up in front of your house, and then I decided that it was not a good idea, I left and called instead.” Yea, I thought.

This was an almost mess in your pants moment for me. This guy was huge, disheveled, and he appeared to be a ticking time bomb to me. He claimed to have the next greatest idea that would put Google out of business and he wanted to run his business proposal by me. I had time on my hands and that it wouldn’t hurt to give this guy an hour of my time. I thought what if… Well, his proposal had already been duplicated thousands of times over and his was being poorly executed.

He thought so much of his great idea that he had me sign a non-disclosure agreement. Eventually he showed me his website and did his presentation. Then he tries to close me. He was looking for financial partners. I went to great lengths to explain why I thought that his business model would not work. I further explained that even if he could make it work that the site would need to be professionally built and he would need huge amounts of money to promote it.

What he was trying to accomplish was to be a cross between Craigslist and YouTube. However, his business model was built upon selling classifieds ads which are free all over the internet. I very carefully explained that I wanted nothing to do with his business concept. I further explained that I thought that he would likely fail. I thought the guy was going to pounce on me and perhaps do great bodily harm to me. Yes, the guy was that scary. He informed me that I was the only person who ever told him no. This guy was huge and I could understand why someone would want to shine him on.

Now, I had to be as gracious as possible because this guy knows where I live. The first thing that I did upon arriving home was to change my business address in Google’s Local Business Center. I made up a number but used the same street address. I hoped and prayed that this guy would not go off someday and come looking for me.

I got a second reality check when I recently checked my Local Business Center listing a few days ago. That’s when I discovered Google was now placing a street view picture of the address that I supplied with our LBC listing on our place page. It was not a very big deal for me as it was not my residence that Google was showing because I changed my address, but it could have been. It truly can be a crazy world out there on the internet we must be careful, especially if you have a home based business and a family.

If you are a home based business do you really want a picture of your home in your Google local listing? Depending when Google took a photo of your home it may also include you, your family members, or your personal vehicles. I have not been able to find out where or how to remove this picture. In fact, I can’t get any answers from Google about its local maps. They offer a help forum but this has been of very little help. If I find a solution I will let you all know. I have made an inquiry today, but none of my other inquiries have been answered by A Google employee. That inquiry was made three days ago. I held off posting then until I gave Google an opportunity to respond but they have not.

There is a lot of frustration with the lack of customer support with Google in general and more specifically in the Local Business Center department. I have been trying to get an answer for why a clients listing was flagged for several weeks now. Google is Beta testing a new ad program associated with its Local Maps and doesn’t seem to be offering any customer support at this time. Those of us who are regularly involved with Local SEO and Local Maps have never been thrilled with the support, or the lack thereof, that Google offers.

I would suggest that you seriously consider changing your address if you have been using your home address. Do you really want photo of your home appearing in your business listing? I know I have one really huge reason not to have my home appearing! I can only hope that others notice this and start asking Google to change this and allow home based businesses to opt out pf having pictures of their homes appearing in its local maps. Now, you will need to check your businesses place page to see if your home is appearing on this page. I checked some listing of other home based businesses that I know off. About two thirds of the listing that I checked has a street view photo in their listing. While yours may not have a street view now, it likely will in the near future.

SEO Doesn’t Take Forever Or At Least Not For Me!

October 30, 2009

I am tired of hearing that SEO takes a long time. I don’t believe this to be true, at least not for me. Now, I will agree if you are in a competitive market and you have 20 – 30 websites determined to be on the first page of Google for your targeted keywords you will have a difficult if not nearly impossible task on your hands. This is especially true if any of these sites are several years old and the keyword phrase appears in their url.

There is one thing to remember about SEO. The difficulty factor has very little to do with the number of search results that a particular search produces. Last year we created some Do Follow list of blogs and forums. At that time a Google search for “Do Follow List” Produced around 156 Million results. Yet, our page that targeted this search went to the first page in less than a month and stayed there.

Why was this possible? The fact is that even though 156 Million pages included these three words on a page it still was not a competitive search at that time. This was not a search that was competitive. People wrote about the subject and that was about it. Since then the search has become much more competitive with many sites offering lists and Do Follow search capabilities and tools.

Several months ago I created a new page on the website that targets Holistic SEO. This search produces about 390,000 results. We were able to land that page on the first page within three weeks. This is not a highly competitive search by volume.

Last Month I re-titled my blog to include the keyword phrase Phoenix SEO. This search for Phoenix SEO only produced 304,000 results at that time. However, there are perhaps 20 companies actively targeting this phrase. Yet, in less than three weeks we were a regular on the first page of Google for this search. My advantage here is I have a blog that is regularly updated. It is mostly competing against static pages. Thus I have a huge advantage and the blog has gone as high as # 2.

Then on April 2 I created another yet another page That targets Arizona SEO Solutions. This is another low volume low but competitive search. After less than two weeks that page ranks # 2 in Google searches. Google often ranks new pages well. Staying there has proven much harder because it is competitive. There are about 20 companies that are actively pursuing this search.  Now, I am no genius here. I don’t use any tricks and only I use good old basic SEO and basic ethical link building methods. I also pick my targets well. There is nothing automated here we manually acquire links . We earn links by adding value to other sites and by providing something worth linking too.

I shake my head when I read that SEO takes time.

So what do you think about this?

Old Posts Are Being Closed To Comments

October 28, 2009

I have been slowly closing old posts to comments. I had left them open to comments so that my readers could comment on some of the better older posts. However, that is changing due to spam. Yep, the only reason that most older posts get comments is people are trying to spam old posts for links. I would not mind if the comments were useful, but they never. People don’t realize that the blog is moderated and that all comments have to be approved. This way I have complete control over the blog.

I have finally gotten tired of deleting these useless comments. I just wasting my very limited and valuable time. So I simply wait till someone leaves a useless comment on an old post, then I close it to comments. This saves me lots of time, especially since the blog has over 300 posts. It is a sad fact of being a blog owner. People don’t care that they waste your time so you must protect it.

It seems that I have been talking about spam a lot lately… and it’s true! It is a never ending battle!

Eventually only the most recent and most commented posts will allow comments.

Backlink Building RoboForm Style – Be Your Own Service

October 26, 2009

First off if you have never heard of RoboForm then let me explain. RoboForm is a password management system that stores your login information. It stores this information for later retrieval. If you do a lot of searching on the internet or use a lot of social media sites, then it is a must have tool. I visit hundreds of such sites monthly so I purchased the pro version for about $30.00 US. The company offers a trail version so that you can try it without buying.

I visit so many sites that it would be impossible to manage without a tool like this. There are many other similar products. The point here is if you are going to become a serious link builder you have to be able to manage a lot of information. RoboForm is a good choice for these needs.

Almost daily I sign up to join a site that doesn’t require me to login in to begin using it. In this case, the program will not pick up the login information. I have to remember to log out and log back in to record this information and I often forget. The only way that I might ever return is if I get an update email from this site. This occurs almost daily, the problem is that by then I may not remember what login that I originally used. The moral here is yours tools are only as good as how you use them.

So what does RoboForm have to do with backlink building or a backlink service? Well, I use RoboForm as a link finding tool or a service of sorts. I am currently going through my logins, all 800 plus, one at a time. I have collected over a hundred links by revisiting these sites in the last three days. It is impossible to remember all of the sites where I have registered and that’s were RoboForm is so helpful.

I am being my own on link building service so this requires an accurate database. While going through the database I end up dumping about 20% of these sites. I do research on a daily basis, as I have mentioned, and I join dozens of sites that turn out not to be very useful. Usually, I end up with at least one generic link to the home page, but these sites mostly offer little reason to return so they are deleted. This allows me to multi-task which is something that I love to do. I build more links, I keep my accounts active, and I also get rid of the dead wood.

Usually, when I am doing a database purge each site will usually offer at least one opportunity to acquire an additional link. Occasionally, as happened a few days ago, I visited a site and it produced an RSS feed and four other links for a total of 24 links. My point here is that we often have very useful information at our fingertips that we are overlooking.

One of those areas that I recently wrote about was Google’s Webmaster Tools. It contains all the sites that are linking to yours. Where you can get one link it is a good bet that you can return and acquire more. Remember, you will be gladly accepted back if you are adding quality comments and content.

Are you leaving quality comments?

Blogging For Links What You Need To Be Successful Part 2

October 25, 2009

Now, that I have gotten my frustrations off my chest in the previous post, it’s time to get down to business. I will start off by claiming to actually know something about link building. First, I would like to direct you to my post on how well this site ranks for our targeted keyword phrases. As of October 1 we ranked for over 60 keyword phrases. I would especially like to point out that we rank anywhere from #1 to # 5  in Google for the keyword phrase Backlinks Building Services.

Let me make it clear that this was not accomplished by a large staff of link builders it was accomplished by one person. Many of the keyword phrases that I target include highly competitive phrases that include SEO or internet marketing in them. No, building links is not all that I do, but I spend more time on link building and branding than anything else. I also build links 7 days a week.

I should also point out that I no longer build links by using blog commenting on stand alone blogs. I gave it up for several reasons. The main reason was that because I include SEO in my keyword phrase in the name field where allowed. Spam filters were picking it up. I did a case study that only 43% of my blog comments got approved. However, this is not likely to happen to you if you provide useful relevant comments.

A successful blog commenting campaign is all about being prepared and setting goals. I recommend that you analyze your competition and find out who is linking to them. A really good resource is Backlink Watch. All that you need to do is enter your competitors url and hit enter. They will provide you with up to 1,000 backlinks that are going to your competitors. It also may indicate if the link is Do Follow or No Follow.

There are a few other good choices such as Yahoo’s Site Explorer. I just did a search of a professional link builder today that I am very familiar with. Yahoo’s Site Explorer produced 2843 going to her site and Backlink Watch produced around 2700 links. However, each site allows you to only access to the first 1,000. I don’t know yet, if they are both using the same database or different ones. The point is that I now have a huge database from where I can begin the process of link building. I am certain that their will be a lot of overlapping links, but that’s ok.

It is much better to start a link building program where you already know links may be obtained than just doing a Google search for Do Follow blogs. Those lists produced by doing a Google search are so very used and abused that they quickly become obsolete. I should know I have used them all. Blogs that end up on these lists often get sick of all the spammy posts that they switch back to a No Follow status. This problem is only getting worse.

Before you begin a link building program you should set some realistic goals. My personal goal is to acquire 100 links a day. I will not fulfill this goal today, as I have decided that my blog need some more attention. It isn’t important that you meet these goals every day. It is important that you have goals and that you try to fulfill them. It the old saying, if you don’t set goals you will surely not obtain them. The higher the goal, as long as it is realistic, means that you will be more successful than if you set easily achievable goals. The idea here is that 75% of 100 is much better than 75% of 50. I personally find achieving these daily goals very rewarding.

Even if your goal is only 5 links a day it will have a positive effect over time. Link building, to be most effective needs to become a regular part of your marketing plan. Blogs especially, fold on a regular basis or they get tired of all the spam associated with being Do Follow and they return to No Follow. Those links that you had last year may need replacing this year. I just lost a huge amount of links when Ning recently made profile links No Follow. That really hurt as I had way too many eggs in my Ning basket. I will have a hard time replacing them before I run my monthly ranking report on the first of November. It will be very interesting to see how much ground that we have lost.

Now, that you have a huge amount of resources available to you will want to record where you left comments hoping for a link. I would recommend using a password manager program like RoboForm. This is a good option if you had to register to leave a comment. A better choice is creating a spread sheet or a Word document where you list the exact post where and when you made a comment. Then you will want to return to these blogs a week or so later to verify if your comment was approved. If your comment was not approved then there is no reason to return to this blog.

You will also want to pay close attention to see if the blog has a comment policy. If it does, then do take the time to read it. I reject 85 to 90% of all comments left here because the commenters failed to pass our comment policy. I even get people commenting on the comment policy post and doing it wrong! If you want to have an effective link building program you absolutely must follow the comment policies. where you find one.

Finding a Comment Policy on this blog is easy as it appears along side the comment box. That often is not the case on most blogs. Many blogs never bother to write one so what should you do then? I simply observe the comments that are already appearing on the blog if those comments include keywords then it is a good bet that your comment will be approved if you do the same thing. If you only see names it is better to move on as a comment with keyword will not be approved.

It amazes me that all day long people leave comments here and never bother to read the comment policy. They also fail to notice that most comments approved do not include a link. I am a real big fan of doing things that will directly benefit this website. So leaving a comment that isn’t likely to get approved is a big waste of time for me. The difference between leaving a useful comment and a short comment is usually 30 seconds or less. Why not take the time to leave a useful comment?

Also if you take the Scratch My Back Marketing approach and view comments as an advertisement for your site you will find the benefits very rewarding. It really comes down to do unto others as you would have them do to you! This isn’t pie in the sky stuff here. But it does require a certain level of common sense.

After all  if you have gone through the paces to leave a comment why not take a little longer to do it right and be rewarded? I call that win/win marketing?

We are now using the Scratch My Back Marketing plugin. This anti spam plugin simply requires that your comment be at least 150 characters in length or it is automatically rejected. It’s that simple. We are now forcing commenter’s to do what we were requesting for months on this blog! The blog also uses Keyword and Comment Luv. Please note that if you only include keyword your comment may be used put you will not obtain a link!

Blogging For Links What You Need To Be Successful

October 24, 2009

I am writing this post from life experience. I work at link building 7 days a week. Yes, that does mean that I am a workaholic and I have a great need to succeed. I do not recommend that you attempt to emulate my work ethic but I have some pearls of wisdom to share today.

My link building methods have been honed over three years. In the beginning I left my share of “nice post” comments. I was being truthful, as I had read the blog post and I agreed that it was a good post. I was looking at this from only my perspective. I needed links and the quicker that I could work the better. In most cases I added to the conversation but not always.

I am not a very good writer and if you have read my blog for a while you already know this. Grammar and spelling are difficult for those who are dyslexic which I am. I had to spell check dyslexic while writing this post. Thus it is very easy for me to make a mistake when leaving a blog post comment, especially if the comment was made when I am tired. Sometimes I come upon my old comments and cringe.

Then in May of 2008 I became a blog owner. I quickly learned what blog commenting behaviors that I liked and that I didn’t. The blog was No Follow for the first 10 months so I approved just about everything. I figured that it didn’t matter because the link was mostly useless. Think about it; when the last time you visit a website of someone who left a “nice post” comment?

Having my own blog taught me that there are good ways to leave comments and there were also not so good ways to leave comments. I now was making a concerted effort to leave a useful comment everywhere I went.

Then the blog became Do Follow in early 2009. This would eventually lead to the link building and marketing program that I call Scratch My Back Marketing.

Since the blog was now providing useful links I began to ask that commenters leave a 20 word comment at the end of each post. I started calling this requirement Scratch My Back Marketing. I expanded on this to make it our way of building links. The basic idea was to create a link building program that focused on link building as a branding and advertising opportunity. I knew from experience that a great relevant comment can lead to business. I also like to multitask so the idea of doing multiple things while link building was a no brainer for me.

That comment length requirement that I asked for was almost 100 % completely ignored. I got frustrated with my commenters after all; I was providing an anchor text Do Follow backlink and was using Comment Luv. I figured this kind of link was worth leaving a good comment. It’s what I would do, but I was wrong. People were only coming to the to comment for a link and they were not willing to work for it. They seldom bothered to even read the post.

That didn’t make me very happy. I even considered going back to No Follow, but I decided to create an anti spam plugin instead that I called Scratch My Back Marketing. It allows the blog owner to set a character threshold on comments before they are allowed a link. On this blog it currently requires a comment of 150 characters in length or the comment is automatically rejected.

The current problem that I am currently addressing is the use of only keywords only in the comment field. I have had comments that were several hundred words in length that were rejected. The blog uses Keyword Luv and it requires that a name be used along with your keywords. Yet, every day the blog receives a dozen or more comments that only use keywords. If the comment is useful and relevant I will use it without providing a link. I have been recording the daily results in the post, It Is Hard To Find A Useful Comment.

So then how do you successfully blog comment for links? That I will get to in Part 2 of this post! I needed to whine before I got to the serious post. This post will appear tomorrow.

Are You ready to be a successful link builder?

The Buzz In Local SEO

October 23, 2009

If you are into providing Local SEO services then you are very much aware of the big changes that are coming to Google’s Local Maps (Local Business Center.) For the rest of you here is what is happening. Please pay attention here if you have a local business.

Google is rolling out a new advertising program it has been appearing in the San Diego and San Francisco markets for a while now. It allows local businesses to purchase ads that appear above the organic search results. These ads are currently highlighted with a blue push pin. So what’s the big deal.

Google generally has marketed this area of the search results to national players and has not gone after local markets. It had left this market basically to Yellow Page type information sites. To make room for this new advertising they have reduced the amount of listings that appear in the maps from 10 to seven. So three businesses will no longer be appearing in their local maps.

The pricing for these ads has not been made public and it will vary by location and by keywords. This has the potential is up end the local SEO cart in a big way. We have already seen the rollouts effects on the maps listings for several weeks. There was been huge shifts in the rankings for almost everyone involved with using Google’s Maps. Most of the information that was being used for maps rankings have been removed.

Google’s algorithm for its Local Business Center listing is different than for its organic results. A lot of weight is given to reviews that appear on other websites or local directory listings. If someone gave you are a review on Yelp then that was a good thing. These mentions on other sites are known as citations. Our listing had 29 citations showing in the Google Maps. It has been reduced to 4! It has been theorized by some that Google rolled back the listings to represent what your listing looked like a year ago and that make sense to me.

This all came at an awkward time for me. I was rolling out my own service offering for local maps when this occurred. I have put these plans on hold till I see how this all works out. Prior to these recent changes we ranked  #1 for are primary phrases Tucson SEO and Tucson SEO Solutions. While we still rank #1 for Tucson SEO we now rank # 3 for Tucson SEO Solutions. Also all of my actions over the last two weeks to move the rankings has failed. It appears that new citations are not being added at this time.

If you are interested in placing one of these new ads you will have to have your LBC account verified and this may not be easy. I was updating an unverified account for a client this week and the update got flagged. After doing some research on the LBC help forum I discovered this has been happening a lot lately. I posted a thread asking for assistance two days ago and I have yet to get an answer. However, I did notice that one person from Google has been assigned to answer these threads. So I do still have hope.

So until things get worked out I am holding off offering this service and its full blown marketing push.

The Scratch My Back Marketing requires you to scratch this blog by leaving a useful comment. We then will provide you with an anchor text Do Follow Link. It’s all about win/win marketing. I am willing to exchange page rank for the bump that a fresh comment provides.

Are you ready to exchange comments for links?

It Is Hard Finding A Useful Comment

October 22, 2009

Really, if you were able to see the comments section of this blog you might be surprised by the lack of links that have been awarded this month. It has gotten so bad that I have been considering going back to No Follow again. No one bothers to read the comment policy, and those that comment on that post, even these don’t read it or care. Maybe the Scratch My Back plugin gives them a sales sense of security. None the less, a non quality 150 character comment will not get you a link. This is a moderated blog.

The biggest offenders are those who ignore how to use Keyword Luv and just include keywords. You will never get a link here doing that. The list is very restrictive, but why not, after all, Do Follow links that allow anchor text links are extremely difficult to find on blogs theses days. That doesn’t stop these lazy bums. So I figure it like this, I will stay Do Follow and I will use these spam comments to my advantage.

I simply remove the backlink and use the comments anyways. Then I include a short explanation and a link to the comment policy. These people are so greedy and short sighted that they fail to notice. Maybe, they do it just to waste my time. I don’t know, but what I do know is this. I get about 10 of these a day. I rarely get a comment that is worthy of a link anymore. Yet, these spammy thoughtless and clueless comments are doing me a big favor. Especially the guy who represents a lawyer he leaves 6 – 8 comments at a time. He even comments on the same posts over and over.

Here is how they benefit the blog. The blog targets the keyword phrases Phoenix SEO and Niche SEO. Both these these phrases rank in the top 5 of Google and these rankings are powered by spam! Without these comments this page would not rank nearly as well. These spammers have tuned out to be a great source of fresh content, bad content, but content never the less!

So I will readjust my attitude and enjoy the high rankings. The only real downside here is that it makes writing quality posts much more difficult to get motivated. So I now check the search rankings for these keyword phrases before I start writing… And that gets me plenty motivated.

Your Website May A Great Link Building Resource If You Use Webmaster Tools

October 13, 2009

Today, I have been going through the hundreds of links to my home page in Google’s Webmaster Tools. If you are not already using this service I have to ask why not. Webmaster tools provides a true look at your website as Google sees it. One of the great features is where it shows you what links it has recorded to your website and it breaks it down by pages.. This can create wonderful link building opportunities as well.

Most of the links to my home page have been produced by my efforts, but not all. Since I am online everyday for many hours doing research I visit a whole lot of websites. I may have been working on a website building a profile and then got distracted or the computer crashed and I lose track of these sites. Usually, I will join the site and it provides an email verification. I visit the site but many times it does not require me to log into the site in this process. I leave, I delete the email, and with out a record of my visit on my part I may never return.

In most cases where the site forces me to log in and RoboForm will record my login info, but still if the site didn’t catch my attention I may not return for months if at all unless I am cleaning out RoboForm. What I have been learning today is that their are lots of opportunities for link building that I missed the first time around. Today, I picked up 24 links on one site by checking my Webmaster Tool links.  It was a social media site that allowed me to list my blog which I did. It then pinged my blog and provided 20 links to my 20 most recent posts. I picked up four more by adding some value in the form of content. This really surprised me because it didn’t ask what my RSS feed.  I simply entered my blogs address. and boom I had not one link but 20.  I have never seen this before.

I have been wanting to do this chore for sometime now. I finally began the process and I am very glad that I did. I also have discovered sites where someone linked to me but that I was not aware of or that I had forgotten. Can anyone say more links. These kinds of discoveries just make my day. It was so easy, yet, it seemed like Christmas to me. If you are a link builder like myself you know exactly what I mean. Sometimes we can seem to be  spinning our wheels trying to market our websites and we miss wonderful opportunities. We miss the easy fruit while we try for the shiny apples that are often hard of reach.

Do you have low lying fruit (links) that you are overlooking?

Can You Meet Or Exceed These Search Results – October 2009

October 11, 2009

Recently, I had written about the fact that I have abandoned blogging for links to acquire higher search rankings. The reason was very simple spam filters. Many blogs have their spam filters set to catch any comment that includes the acronym SEO. I discovered that over half of my comments were ending up in the spam filters and never got published. These were not spammy comments. No, they adhered to the Scratch My Back Marketing philosophy thus they were useful comments.

About the time that I abandoned using blog to gain high search engine rankings I started reporting how well this site ranked for its targeted keyword phrases. At that time the site ranked on the first page of Google for 29 different phrases. Today, a just a few months later that number has grown to 63. Yes, that’s right we rank on the first page of Google for 63 Keyword phrases.

Update 10/12/2009 I can add another keyword phrase today I discovered that the site is ranking # 2 for Backlink Building Service. I just decided to go after this phrase last week. This page almost immediately went to the # 7 position. So I made a concerted effort and the targeted page is ranking # 2. I have also acquired the attention of one of the biggest players in SEO, Orange soda. I noticed today that they are now using AdWords advertising in my marketing to compete directly with me. I have been outranking them or very close to for several nation searches. More on this later.

All of these phrases are related directly to services that we offer in the SEO and internet marketing arenas. This trend continues this month. We saw improvement in our search rankings for 23 keyword phrases. The most significant move was for me was the phrase Geo-targeting SEO. We went from ranking both # 6 and # 7 to # 1 and # 2. Now, this is not a very competitive but it is one of our primary services. I had made a point of going after this phrase and it worked!

Now, know this that these results fluctuate often. These results are likely to move throughout the day. These swings can usually be attributed to what data center that you land at. Today, when I searched for Local SEO that page was ranking at # 16. Yesterday, it was ranking # 6. Out of all the keyword phrases that I monitor this one moves the most.

The same is true for the search Niche SEO. For the last three weeks this site ranked both # 1 and # 2. Today, it ranks # 6 and # 7. It may change again later today. When I started this post we ranked # 19 for the search Local Internet Marketing Services. I just checked it and our # 1 position has been restored! The big amazing to me is that we rank both # 1 and 2 for Local Website Marketing Services out of 476 Million results!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Wow.

Some of these searches have very low usage volumes, but that are services that we provide. The site ranks well for affordable link building services and for affordable link building. My goal is to eventually rank well for link building or link building services. These will not be easy, as my competition is very good at link building and many have had many years to build links.

What gives me encouragement is this. I have noticed once a company gains high search rankings there business increases and this is a good thing. They then often scale back on what got them there. I struggle with this as well. I have used this down economy to grab market share. It is very easy to loose sight of what allowed you to be successful in the first place. I from time to time loose sight of the importance of blogging. Like link building, blogging is time intensive.

No the down side of things the site lost ground for three searches.  However, nine other phrases appeared on the first page of the Google results and that’s a very good thing!

Update 10/12/2009 – I just discovered that we rank # 3 for Small Business SEO Services. What surprises me here is that we rank ahead of SEOmoz, an SEO authority site. Wow! That’s right up there with occasionally out ranking Orange Soda, another industry leader.

These results were pulled 10/01/2009 from Google

Google Drives Me Crazy

October 11, 2009

That’s right Google drives me crazy, but it still shows this website and blog a lot of love. The overall site and blog rank extremely, as in it ranks on the first page for over 60 keyword phrases that we target. That’s the love part. The crazy part for this site is it can’t seem to make up its mind when it comes to the keyword phrase, Local SEO. It can’t make up its algorithm on which page that it should rank higher our Home page or the Local SEO page.

I though that Google had settled on our home page as the primary page for this search. For most of the summer it settled into the # 4 position. Then in August it started bouncing between these two pages and our rankings suffered. Over the last three days it had delivered our Home page first. Today, it is serving up the Local SEO page first. A lot of this has to do with what data center your search was directed towards.

Yes, Google results are not the same across all of their data centers. I have never seen an explanation for this but it continues to be a problem, at least for people like me.

My other really big concern is the changes that Google is making to its Local Business Center (LBC.) They are rolling out new add features that have been appearing in San Francisco and San Diego and that have been widely covered by local maps followers.

For those outside of our industry the LBC simply is the known as Google maps.

Just when I was ready to start offering optimization of the LBC for clients Google started rolling out new features. This caused a major upheaval in the results. The LBC algorithm is separate from the primary results that it produces. It is based on what is known as citations. These citations usually appear as recommendations and reviews that appear on other websites. These have disappeared not only for us but all across the board. This caused many websites to be dumped off of the first page of the maps. This is not a very good thing at all.

So from one day to the next Google sends me and thousands of others into frenzy while we try to figure out what is going on. Generally, these work themselves out… in a week or two. Did I say that I am still waiting! This new add placement feature will make us all rethink Local SEO.

How well is your local business ranking? Tucson SEO offers Local SEO solutions.

Ning Becomes More No Follow What A Bummer

October 10, 2009

I have been a very big fan of Ning.com. If you don’t know what Ning is that generally means that you are a new reader of this Blog. I will now, get you up to speed. Ning is a social media platform similar to Facebook. Ning allows anyone to create their own social networking group at no cost. All you need is an email account and some time.

From January to July of this year I reviewed social media sites in a program that I called the 109 Day Link Building Explosion. During this program I featured around 50 or so Ning sites. Ning has been around for about 5 years. It currently has about 1.2 Million networks on its servers. However, only about 200,000 are actually active. I control 7 of these networks myself that are currently considered inactive and 2 that are definitely active.

One of the main reasons why I have appreciated Ning was because up until a week or ago these network profiles were Do Follow. That was recently taken away. I took a bog hit link wise by this action. I am a member of 125 these networks. I visited each one monthly and updated my profile and would leave a blog post. I use a formal business signature with each post. In the tagline, I always include a few links. No one seems to mind as these posts provide useful intelligent information.

Ning has not yet, made links in blog and discussion posts No Follow, but it could happen. Each of my profiles text boxes included links so eventually I may see some slippage in how well our keyword phrases rank. That is unless I have the time to replace these lost links. It will be very interesting for me when I do my month to month report what effect this Ning change will mean.

This also serves as a reminder again not to have too many eggs in one basket.

Could You Use 66 DIY Do Follow Backlinks From High PR Sites?

October 6, 2009

Beta Testing Closed – Paid Members Only Available

Memberships available at Do Follow Websites.

First, let me start off by explaining what the acronym DIY stands for. DIY stands for Do It Yourself. It’s the kind of backlink building that we all do when we can’t afford to pay someone. You end up doing it yourself. Well, there is a website that is In Beta testing (Beta testing closed) that is offering a great opportunity for you to build backlinks. That site is called the Do Follow Websites. The site offers to show you who to build backlinks on high Page Rank Social Media membership sites. Not only that, it shows you how to build these links ethically so that your account doesn’t get deleted or banned for spamming.

You will need to visit the website and apply for membership. If your application is accepted you will receive another invitation to join the Alpha Group where the backlink program resides. The program will provide directions and screen shoots to assist you to acquire a total of 66 backlinks from high PR sites (4 – 8).

This program doesn’t just show you how to just set up a profile it shows you how to optimize these sites to your best advantage. It shows you what you must do to add value to each website. You must be prepared to make several none spammy or self promoting blog posts. The program only uses social media sites that allow user generated content that that provide Do Follow backlinks. This is a tremendous opportunity to learn how to use Social Media to your advantage while helping the sites out as well by provide quality comments and content.

The program works on an honor system it asks that to maintain the integrity of the program that you only use it on one website. Similar programs have blown up and collapsed because members have used and abused these programs over and over again. Some have even re-posted this information on forums. The end result is that the sites presented in these programs see this as spam and delete all of those using these programs. A program that was designed to realistic accommodate 1,000 websites ends up with 10 – 20 thousand people using the same websites and all of them are doing the same things. The end results is everyone gets deleted and the only one who benefits is the person who started the program.

The Do Follow Websites hope to avoid this situation by carefully monitoring who gets into the program and requiring members to honor a strict code of conduct. This project appears to be as much a social experiment as it is a link building program. It should be very interesting to see I this all plays out. I will keep our readers posted. Even if you miss the free Beta testing portion of this program you still will want to check out the program. The cost is a mere $9.90 and that works out to .15 a link. That’s a bargain in anyone’s book.

Then, I would like to entice you to comment by providing you with useful backlinks as part of what I call “Scratch My Back Marketing.”

This is the part where I move link juice around the site and hope that someone might actually want to learn more about our local small business solutions and venture further.
