A Reflection On The Year 2009 A Year Of Learning And Adapting.

The year 2009 was a challenging one here at Tucson SEO Solutions, as it was for many small businesses across America and all across our blue planet. It started out very disruptive as our major contract did not renew in January. That coincided with the worst recession in my life time.
To survive I launched a marketing program that I called The 109 Day Link Building Explosion. That program featured short reviews of 5 blogs, forums, and social media sites that provide useful Do Follow backlinks. The idea caught on and website traffic soared over 300%. While researching these sites I was also leaving useful comments as part of what I like to call Scratch My Back Marketing (more on this later.) One of those comments caught someones eye. They followed that link, they contacted us, and I acquired some much needed work. This occurred at a time when we were on the brink of folding the business.
Scratch My Back Marketing was no longer just a cute theory it was a marketing program that was doing as it was intended. It was producing business. Please visit the blog post Scratch My Back Marketing Explained for the story. In a nutshell, this program required that I exchange useful content and comments in exchange for Do Follow backlinks. This way everyone benefits. One thing that I have learned in this business is this. No one ever visits the site that is linked to a comment that reads “nice post” or “thanks.” But people on occasion will follow a link associated to a comment that makes sense to them. Quality comments pique the readers curiosity.
Over the year 2009 I built upon Scratch My Back Marketing to become an industry leader in link building services. We have for several months ranked both #1 and #2 in Google based searches for Backlinks Building Services. It all started with those 109 Day of 5 reviews each which meant a total of 545 reviews of Do Follow resources. For every site that I reviewed I visited 6 that I did not review. Of those about 40% provided at least one generic link.
This also was making me a skilled researcher. I had learned how to effectively search the internet. I also located some other power link builders. Fortunately, these link builders use the same user name wherever they went. Once I had this information I could now discover where they were obtaining links and I just followed the trails that they blazed while setting up profile on a wide variety of web 2.0 social sites. I also was able to discern very quickly how to optimize these sites to my advantage or when it was time to move on.
Then I combined this information with what I like to call smart thinking. When I would start on a project I was well prepaired. I had my goals in place, I had the sites that I would use already mapped out. Link building, very successful link building requires a well thought out and well executed game plan. I took the mind set of an offensive coordinator for an NFL team. I would study the competition and then generate a game plan based on what my competition was doing in a particular market.
In the year 2009 I would become first a student of link building, then a tutored of other small business owners, to eventually an expert in the field. I had not intended this to happen it merely was an outgrowth of helping others find Do Follow resources through the 109 Day Program. Then in August a commenter on this blog mention a link builder that I was not aware of. I checked her and and while studying her work and her associates work I discovered thousands of sites that were use in the link building process. I studied their methods I discovered where they where spot on, but I also learned mostly from their mistakes.
In August I went into a full blown research and link building campaign. By the end of the 109 Day Link Building Program our site was ranking on the first page of Google for about 31 keyword phrases. This was up from 17 at the beginning of the year. Then by December 4th that number grew to 81 keyword phrases. The year 2009 was the year of link building for me. Our business had transitioned from purely an local SEO provider to becoming an educator. I did more website reviews combined with link building training than anything else. This training helped this business finish the year as a functioning business.
With the huge drop off in business my life/business partner Geri left to seek employment in a very shakey job market. Fortunately, and unfortunately, she found work just down the street from where we live. I will cover more of this later as it was a blessing that turned into a curse of sorts… Too be continued…

This Blog Hasnt Been Much About SEO Lately

This blog has not been much about SEO lately. The reason what is very simple. My life partner, Geri has been struggling just to stay alive. Her liver is shot and that creates a whole lot of related health issues. We spent both Thanksgiving Day and most of Christmas in the hospital. This time around she has come home with oxygen which she will likely need 24/7 and likely forever.
So yes, our life has been turned upside down. She will need to apply for a liver transplant and for government disability. We are still waiting for prescription coverage to kick in and for the medical bills to be covered. It is very interesting that as long as you are in a hospital in the US you are well treated. However, that long list of prescriptions that they give when you depart is up to you to cover.
As I have mentioned previously, as small business owners with pre-existing conditions, we could not get affordable coverage so went went without. So when we left the hospital the needed medications were up to us to cover out of pocket. And as you might already know prescriptions are not cheap.
Now, having said all of that I can happily report that Geri is doing remarkably well*** The asterisks represent the fact that not only are we living day to day with her illness but it is often measured from hour to hour. Last evening I finally got some much needed sleep, about 9.5 hours worth. While, that was wonderful for me, Geri, anxiously awaited my waking moment. Yes, these are scary times for us.
I am by nature an optimistic person by this part of myself has been challenged lately. It is a real effort to see the positive when your mate is critically ill. When I can I try to keep working. Work is a blessing as it distracts me. I have been scouring all of the social bookmarking lists on the internet. I will be launching a new ning site where the list will be featured. It should include about 200 social bookmarking sites. It should be available by 01/01/2010.

I have written about spam many times in the past and I had read about the Bad Behavior plugin stopping auto spam. So I finally decided to give it a try a few months back and it did a great job. Spam comments were reduced from 350 a day down to about 15. I was thrilled.
Then I noticed that a new version had just come out so I happily upgraded. Well, there must have been some weakness with the upgrade because I was flooded with large volumes of spam from three specific email addresses. These folks found a weakness and were exploiting it while they could. As you might imagine I was not happy.
Then, About a week ago I had read about this great WP blog and web host. I checked out the site and was very impressed so much so that I hired him to secure our site. The gentleman’s name is John of WpBlog Host. We needed a security upgrades since the site had been recently hacked. So this so an easy decision for us, especially since our developer seemed to lack interest in securing the blog. He’s a great guy but he is not a WP expert.
As it turns out Bad Behavior was experiencing some of its own bad behavior and would not work. John replaced it with another program called Tan Tan Noodles. Now, I had read some great reviews on this plugin.Yet, I didn’t take it seriously because of its name. Wow, what a mistake that was.
This plugin has reduced spam to zero! That’s right zero auto spam! I haven’t seen any spam during the entire week that it has been on the blog. Yes, it’s that good. Now, if you want to lock down the security of your blog I would recommend using John.
I have been blogging for over two years and I had learned to loathe auto spam. Now, that the spam is gone I find that I am experiencing spam withdrawals. If you think about it, it make sense, For over two years part of my day involved cleaning out the spam filter and cursing to myself as I did it. That part of my day is gone.
It a very strange feeling to check for spam and not to find any. I had got so accustomed to spam that it had become part of my daily routine. It sounds so funny to say I’m going through spam withdrawals, but I am.
As for the security upgrades I am reluctant to go into specific details of how we are protecting WordPress as I don’t want hackers to be able to know what we have done and then exploit it. What I can say is that he removed all references to WP in our files and added some plugins. What he essentially accomplished was to add several layers of protection for our website.
What really separates John from the crowd is that he made a video of what he did and how he did it while he was doing it on my site. He didn’t settle for a generic demo video. This video was unique to your website.
He does all of this for about $50.00. When I explained everything that we did to my web developer he asked “How does he make any money?” I stated that I believe he does it not so much for the money but for the love of blogging and more specifically for his passion for WordPress. My developer is a billable hour’s kind of guy and he just didn’t get the passion part.

My Christmas Present My Honey’s Return From The Hospital

Yes, My Christmas Present is My Honey’s Return From The Hospital. The love of my life has become critically ill over the last two months. She has spent Thanks Giving Day and most of Christmas in a local medical center here in Tucson. She arrive home yesterday around sunset. This time she returned home with an oxygen tank in tow. She will also need regular blood transfusions.
To say this is a dramatic change in our lives would be an understatement. She is tired ans weary from her hospital stays but in remarkably good spirits otherwise. These changes have been difficult on both of us. It certainly places additional responsibilities on me. I am a worker bee by nature so adjusting will be a challenge but certainly very doable.
Because of Geri’s illness she can not safely drive or tolerate bright sunlight. So it will be my job to run the errands and do the shopping. Which are things that I do not mind doing at all. It is just going to be more difficult to balance the needs at home and work. Since I work from home this with be a very challenging task as I am easily distracted.
Having said all of that, I am extremely grateful to be here for her. My love for Geraldine is boundless. We will be exploring whether she is a candidate for a liver transplant. Yes, her illness is that extreme. She is in her early 50 so a transplant could add decades to her life. She we have entered a stage where we are discussing ways to extend life. That freaks me out when I think about the implications here. I will be exploring if I am a physical match for giving her part of my liver. I would do it without hesitation.
It’s at times like this when love is more than an easily spoken word. This is where the rubber meets the road. I am a very emotional male. Sometimes I think I cry to easily, but it is what it is. I tried so hard not to break down in front of her at the hospital but I was not always successful. I have often found myself curled into a fetal position weeping and sobbing in grief over the last two months. I have sometimes, in the past, said that I hope I would be like my dad and be the first to go. Now, that seems so selfish and shallow.
Now, unto a brighter point, I am very grateful that we live in the state of Arizona. The state has been on the forefront of providing health care. So it is likely that Geri’s medical expenses will be covered. If we lived in another state the medical bills would overwhelm us and would make life unbearable. But getting medical attention while our paperwork gets processed is still via the emergency room. We were told yesterday at the hospital that we qualified. We were sent home with oxygen supplies which usually indicates that she has been covered, but we have not gotten this confirmed in writing.
Hopefully, this will be taken care off when I go to fulfill her prescriptions later today.
I have for the most part been able to keep this blog strictly business related but with all that is going on I decided to allow our readers into our lives on a more personal level. That came back to bite me sotra when a heart felt post on our health struggles was spammed. It was an India based link builder representing a England based SEO provider. I became livid, after all the post was about our life and death struggles. I found this to be an extremely repulsive action. There are over 300 other posts that could have been used but they lazy bastard went for the first post available.
I have blacklisted the email associated with that comment. Spam is a reality that we all live with I know… but it just got to me. At that point I didn’t know if my honey would ever return home again. I emailed the company to express my anger, but of course they never replied.
I also wanted to take a moment to thank those wonderful people who have left wonderful comments of encouragement. They really are appreciated.

Another Update Our Life and Death Struggle Another Really Big Scare

I have been living a life that I would have never asked for if I had been given an option. But life didn’t allow me that luxury. What I am talking about here is the struggle to stay alive that my lover, my business partner, my life partner, my everything, Geri has been going through.
Like many who live in the United States we are small business owners who are struggling to keep our business open. We also can’t get health insurance due to preexisting conditions at any price. So she delayed health care till it was almost to late. She now has multiple conditions that make it very difficult to treat her. Its a combo plate of problems that include her spleen, her blood oxygen levels, blooding clotting factors, her liver, and water retention just to name a few.
One thing is certain is that she is loosing blood somewhere somehow internally. They suspect that the problem is with her spleen. Surgeons where summoned today to talk about our options. However, they started the conversation off based on faulty information from the lab. Apparently, the lab was showing that her kidney’s where almost completely dysfunctional. This would make any surgery extremely risky.
The conversation was grim and it centered about what could be done to extend her life. It took an enormous effort on my part to stay calm. I knew that things were bad but it is very difficult to discuss extending the life of someone that you love. What should you do, who should you listen too, and who should you trust. This scene or a similar one is being played out on a daily basis all across America. So that which I write about is not unique except that it is happening in the center of our world.
The problem was that the information about her kidney’s wrong. When the doctor mentioned her kidney’s I had to stop him and ask him to repeat what he just said which he did. I spoke up and mentioned that after a month this was the first mention of her kidney’s failing. At that point the surgeon appeared confused and surprised. He excused himself to look into the situation. When we did not appear after 30 minutes I assumed that he was called into surgery.
It was then that Geri confided in me that she no longer has a fear of death. This is something that has loomed over her during these health struggles. I long ago had an out of body near death experience and had lost any fear of death. However, my story was of on comfort to her. So what she was now telling me was a significant change for her. As I listened to her I began to embrace the fact that our time together may be limited. At times like this you are flooded with memories of things that were wrongly said and missed opportunities.
I was now dealing with a litany of would of, could of, and should of’s. Shortly thereafter, I lost it and began to weep and sob as I am doing now. I was also filled with anger. The kind of anger that one expresses to their God in situations like this. After two divorces and many relationships I had found true love with Geri. The thoughts of facing life without her where becoming unbearable. I quietly, whimpered that I needed to go home to cry. I didn’t want her to see me like this. I wanted to be stronger but I could not muster the strength. Even now, I feel guilty for going home.
Eventually, after much weeping and sobbing I would fall asleep. Later, the phone rang and caller id indicated the call was from the hospital so I took it. It was Geri informing me that the lab screwed up and her kidney’s were working as they should. Finally, some god news I thought.
I will return to the hospital again later today to map out what we are going to do on the health front. She will likely never return to any form of employment and that creates a whole other set of situations. Well, it’s 3 in the morning and I will end this and try to catch up on some sleep.
Its a sad tale for the holiday season, but life is often sad when others are rejoicing. I truly wish and pray that you all have a safe and prosperious holiday season. I would ask this on small favor please remember us in yours prayers.

How to Construct Page Titles For High Rankings

This is a rewrite of an old favorite of mine. It covers the basics of how I got into this business sorta.
We have learned, as many of you have the importance of creating effective Page Titles for your website. When talking to clients, potential clients, or individuals at business mixers this is how we explain Page Titles. We compare Page Titles to the “location, location, location” mantra of real estate. The Page Title is that important.
A lot has been written about the use of effective Keywords in page titles. Since Google allows only 65 spaces for your title you should stay within this parameter. You can go longer and it will be indexed, but it will not appear in the SERP’s. If you’ve ever seen a title in the results that ended like this … then you know that the title went beyond the 65 character limit.
There is a very good reason why you should not go long. Around 45% or so of web searchers use the Page Title when choosing to click on a result. So if your keyword appears beyond the space limit it will be out of view. Out of sight often means that your effort has been wasted. Don’t get greedy and over optimize as it will work against you.
Also don’t include throw away words like and or the. Eliminate using symbols such as @,$,!, or & and also avoid using commas. We are going to take a look at the home page title from our old house cleaning website. This site launched an SEO career. It should become apparent why very soon. The Page Title reads:
Tucson House Home Cleaning Janitorial Service Office Business
And these are some of the possible combination of Keywords that include the Geo-targeted keyword Tucson.

So this gives us a total of 12 Keyword phrases in the title.
This is how I ruled the SERP’s in Tucson for our cleaning service website. It ranked as many as 33 times on the first page of Google. Did I say that we closed that business and now exclusively provide web services. Sure these are niche markets that have very few searches every day or month. That’s why a local business or niche website must target long tail keywords. You must target as many possible keyword phrases related to your business as possible.
I have had many SEO professionals berate me for my niche approach to SEO. They always say “Well, that keyword doesn’t get many searches.” I counter it does matter because I rank well for the services that I offer and in the markets where I offer them. Some people have a hard time acknowledging others who are successful in their field of business.
The real beauty of page titles is getting two pages indexed on the first page of the Google results. This can be easily done if you target the same keyword phrase on two pages. Just to a Google search for Tucson SEO or Tucson SEO Solutions and you will see what I mean. Just make minor changes in the titles and you’ll be OK. Never, I mean never use duplicate page titles.
Remember never repeat the same word twice in your page titles it is a total waste. Strangely, I see SEO’ers doing this mistake all the time.

Google Trusts Anchor Text More Than Text On Your Websites Pages

Google Trusts Anchor Text More Than Text On Your Websites Pages
There is a seldom known fact that your targeted keywords don’t actually need to appear on the page for you to rank for that keyword. Let me explain this one for you. The search engines and Google specifically trust anchor text in a link. So much so that they will rank a page for a keyword that doesn’t actually appear on that page. This isn’t some joke or something that I made up but it is a well known fact for those that have been in a link building business for some time.
This goes against everything that you will likely have ever heard before. Here is how I discovered this quirk in the algorithm. I compete for the keyword phrase “Niche SEO.” We had been ranking # 1 for this keyword phrase for months when we where overtaken by a directory site. I was curios what was going on so I visited the site. The acronym SEO appeared several times on this page but the word niche did not.
This really got my attention so I did some research by visiting the forum, SEO Chat. I started a thread to inquire how this site could rank for a word that never appears on their website. I would soon discovered that this forum is full of some intelligent but rude people. I got my answer but I was worked over pretty good in the process. Warning: do not use this forum if you are new to the industry and you don’t have thick skin. The answer was in the anchor text that was being used in the links pointing to that page included the word niche.
As it turned out the person who owned that directory also owned several forums. Many of the links in his signatures said niche directory or niche SEO directory. So Google was giving more weight to the anchor text then the actual text on the page. I was blown away by this revelation. This like any trick used to fool the search engines eventually fails. The search engines figure out what you are doing and downgrade your web page. After about three months this site disappeared from the first page of the search results and eventually into oblivion in the ranking results.
Still that was not enough evidence to satisfy me. I did and experiment on this site to verify what was learned. I had created a page that included our Do Follow list. That page was very active and got multiple comments everyday. I also wanted to crack the first page of Google for the search, Phoenix SEO. So I renamed the page title to include the phrase Phoenix SEO. Then I added the phrase into that page several times.
This little procedure worked like a charm. It was almost like it was something conjured up by Harry Potter. Within just a few days that page made its way onto the first page of the Google results for Phoenix SEO and it stayed there for 3 months. Then almost to the day the page slowly began to descend the search rankings. I had now verified this quirk on my own site. I then changed the page title to reflect what was actually on the page, the Do Follow list.
Now, I am not suggesting that it is a good practice to fool around with Google. I just thought that you might be interested in hearing about this quirk that I discovered.

No I Dont Want To Help You

Now, that’s a very odd tittle for me to use. I really do enjoy helping others in a variety of different ways. That is one big reason why I blog. I am an educator at heart. Having said that I have had to say no a lot in this past month. It seems that some individuals think Tucson is a good spot to set up an SEO business. That’s ok with me. I relish the new competition and when I discover my new competition I generally welcome them.
However, I have been saying no a lot lately to these new competitors. They have been calling me on the phone and emailing me quit a bit lately. They want to be direct competitors of mine and they expect that I should not only welcome them but also assist them! They all want my expertise. They want to know everything about the market for SEO in Tucson. Plus they want all of this for free! The best offer that I have received is an offer to lunch! Heck, I have even turned down a paid offers a few months back.
I was amazed when I got the first request, but the requests kept coming. I have had five such requests in the last month alone. I can not fathom where these men are coming from. They want explicit information about SEO and the market conditions in Tucson and they expect that I should be willing to meet their desires. Not only that, they expect this information for free!
All of these individuals start off their conversations by stating that they have noticed that am all over the internet for anything SEO related in Tucson. Of course this is true. But stroking me about how good I am, is only stating the obvious and doesn’t impress me. No ego boost is going to change my mind. I got burnt early on by a web developer here in Tucson and I am extremely cautious. This person hired me do to a project for him with the understanding that I would get all of his SEO work. Problem is the work never arrived. I showed him the ropes and that was it. I was now competing with the person that I had helped. As the saying goes once bitten twice shy.
My response was very straight forward “I have no interest helping someone so they can compete with me.” Everyone who contacted me seemed shocked that the Big Dog of SEO in Tucson didn’t want to assist them and I didn’t care. The economy is tough all over and I am not going to assist someone who may later take bread off my table. So I have become every good at saying No.
Now, having said that I still offer loads of free advice on this blog and off. Last week a woman called requesting assistance on getting her website noticed. The site ended up being a very generic one page website. This person had no money for my services but I spent a very long time talking and educating this woman. The site offers Christian music but the site had no real focus. I spent much of the discussion and providing resources. We also discussed defining her sites keywords. When I asked her to define what her sight was about she could not provide a good answer. I recommended that she do some research with people where she goes to fellowship with to provide her with input about the site and how they might search for her music.
Any website that wants to be successful has to define what their website was about (keywords). I pointed out that if she focused on the keywords “Christian music” that she would have a huge amount of competition. I also explained that she would need lots of time and resources to accomplish ranking well in this area. I further explained that she needed to do lots of research to find out how others would search for her music. I went on to explain that she would need to create an interactive website to be able to take better advantage of her music. I ended up recommending that she consider WordPress.
I really enjoy conversations like this. While I am not producing billable hours I am making a deposit in the bank of good will. I truly believe in what goes around comes around. This isn’t an isolated event. I will assist just about anyone who calls, who is sincere, but generally clueless about SEO and Internet Marketing. By the way, I have saved these folks tens of thousands of dollars in the process and that makes my days!

Free Yahoo Directory Listing
Yahoo offered the first reliable and searchable directory for the internet. It helps launch the internet as we know it today. You may also know that Yahoo offers its listing service with no guarantees and it costs $299.00. That’s right you may get in if you have a good site and you may not. That is why Google gives a lot of what to a link from their directory because it was earned. However, I am not willing to spend the amount for one link.
Now, I have expressed that this is a lot of money for just one link on this blog many times. Then today I just discovered while blog commenting that Yahoo is offering a free listing in their directory. The catch is that it is in their Yahoo Canada Directory. I read about it and immediately clicked on the site. The process was straight forward and only took a few minutes to complete.
I have on idea when they will get around to listing our site, or if they will refuse it as it is based in the US. If they are listing US sites then I am confident that we will make the cut as we are listed in the DMOZ and Google directories.

How Has The Recession Affected Your Part 2

How has the recession affected you? With that in mind I will get things started. I realized about this time (December 2008) that our biggest contract was expiring and that it would not likely be renewing. I had gotten caught up in the economic crises and the election. I was rarely blogging and was paralyzed by the lack of business inquiries. I knew the gravy train was ending and I had to do something to stir-up interest. This contract covered 70 % of our business. We were very grateful to have it, but now we were running on empty.
That’s when I decided to too do a link building promotion that I would call the 109 Link Building Explosion. For 109 days I would do short review a combination of 5 blogs, forums, or social media sites that provided Do Follow Links. This program caused traffic to soar more than 300%. This increase wasn’t paying the bills. However, visiting all of these sites did provide some much needed business.
A comment that I placed on a blog was read by someone who liked it and followed the link to my site. That lead and inquiry. That inquiry ends up leading to the biggest project (by pages) that I have ever completed. I had discovered that it really does pay to leave quality comments.
This became an epiphany for me. This inspired the link building program that I call Scratch My Back Marketing. It involves leaving quality comments or content on sites that allow you to acquire Do Follow links. You give them something of value and they return the favor. It also involves treating link building a if it where a branding, marketing, or advertising adventure.
This however, may be the biggest advantage of taking on this financial challenge that required me to drum up business in the bleakest economy that I have ever known. It keep me so busy doing the research and writing that I didn’t seem to have time to worry. I averaged about 4 hours of work on each post.
The research also allowed me to fine tune my link building efforts into a well oiled machine. I was really getting into exploring these sites most I which I was visiting for the very first time. I was discovering thousands of social media sites that were Do Follow and new to me.
I know that leaving quality comments or content would require more time to implement. So I began a process of refining my link building processes. I would compensate for the extra time that quality requires by working smarter. It was a series of small improvement that would end up having a huge impact. These new resources meant establishing dozens of new social media profiles daily.
After the link building program ended I found that I now had a lot of free time since the reviews didn’t require my attention. It was then that my full attention was placed on becoming one the most skilled manual link builders around. I am not a known “guru” in my industry and I don’t speak at conventions. So I don’t get the flux of links that are associated with these speaking gigs. No, I have to earn links everyday.
The point here is that when backed into a business corner I was able to come up with a plan for promoting this business. In the process of executing this plan I became an expert, a guru of sorts on link building. I am not a master linkbaiter. In this department I’m batting 50/50. I tried 4 linkbait projects for this blog and only two have been successful.
I am not the worlds most organized guy but I have learned to overcome this weakness when it comes link building. I currently have seven different link building efforts open at this time. I will work one until I meet my goal for that day or till I get bored and then there are the client’s projects. I never lack for things to do.
I simply could not accomplish this without being organized and using the right tools for the job. My password manager RoboForm makes this all possible for me. It stores all of my logins and contact information. So the site registration process usually requires only that I properly execute the capthca’s. properly That is the part that really slows me down. I get these things wrong everyday.
I will usually will begin a project by opening 3 to 5 websites at once. Yes, I am talking link building on steroids. Social Media sites are generally graphic intensive and very busy. This causes the user to wait, and wait, and wait. I just end up moving rapidly from one task to another so I don’t have to wait. While one site is working on my logins I move to another site. I do this all day everyday. I call it maximizing my efforts or ROI. Because I can move seamlessly from one site to the next I generate large time savings. These minutes saved allow me to practice Scratch My Back Marketing. It also helps to have hundreds of blogs posts that can easily be rewritten and used.
My business crises forced me to hone my skills and to get organized. When the 109 Link Building Explosion ended the site was ranking on the first page of Google 31 times for our target keyword phrases. That number now exceeds 80. This transformation has occurred in less than 4 months. I guess that explains why Tucson SEO ranks # 1 for backlinks building services. People were not calling for SEO services but they are still interested in link building. That why I started the Do Follow Websites so I could generate some income. It hasn’t been the biggest success but every sale helps 9 bucks at a time.
Many of these keyword phrases are not very competitive and that’s ok with me. I have always preferred to be a big fish in a small pond. If this success can be sustained I believe we will be well positioned when the economy bounces back. I never intended to become a link building expert, but I was and am highly motivated. It just kinda happened. I believe part of my success is simply that the economic stresses have gotten to many of my competitors. When you are in a survival mode it is easy to forget what got you where you were.
I hope that if we can retain our # 1 ranking for Local SEO Services, Local Internet Marketing Services, and Backlinks Building Services then I believe we will be in a solid position to obtain new business. I like our prospects a whole lot better this year than at the end of 08.
In my world I have reason to hope because lately with the serious illness of my Geri… Hope is all we had…And I (we) are hoping for a better 2010. Everyday is a new adventure as Geri learns to live with an to adapt to a chronic illness. I have to do much more on the home front and I’m very much OK with that. I came way to close to losing her to give up now.
Sometimes hope and faith is all we have.

How Has The Recession Affected Your
Your Family?

I don’t personally know anyone who is prospering in this recession. That’s sad but it’s true. I know way too many people who went into business about the same time as I did and who no longer in business. Every business owner that I know who is still in business has cut back hours or laid-off employees. Did I say that I am grateful to be in business.
We are no different in this regards. I had a business partner – life partner that left this business because there wasn’t enough business to justify two working for Tucson SEO.
What I am asking you today may strike down to the very core of your lives. People everywhere are struggling to over a hide variety of challenges in this year 2009. It has been labeled, and is in fact, the deepest world wide recession since the great depression. I’ve been around since the fifties and I have seen nothing like this.
The late 70’s under Jimmy Carter where very challenging times but that didn’t stop me from opening my first business. in the early 80’s. During this time it was a real struggle in Arizona as the copper mines went on strike. These companies planned on breaking the unions which they did. Suddenly tens of thousands of miners were out of work. These unemployed miners quickly broke into the self employed ranks.
The miners took on one or more of three general labor pools. They would become painters, landscapers, or janitors. I had a new business and my janitorial services where be challenged by desperate men trying to feed their families. The miners and the copper producers struggle sometimes became violent. Even with overwhelming competition we were able to find work. Thank God for that as I was now a first time Dad.
Jimmy Carter lead the country badly. I voted for him and lived to regret it. Unemployment was rampant and interest rates soared to near 20%. That was then I was dumb and young and I didn’t like working for others so I started a janitorial service. However, If I wasn’t already in business I doubt that I would go into business today.
Since this blog is geared to local small business solutions. I want to know what solution worked for you? What business challenge did you encounter? How did handle that situation? I really hope some of you will choose to get involved in this discussion.
In the next post I will discuss how I handled this business and what I did to survive. I can only hope that we can inspire each other and perhaps enhance our hope.

I Could Not Believe This One

Yesterday, I was contacted by a former client that was now representing another company. They were using some SEO guy out of New Jersey. What he told me and I later verified was amazing. Orginally, I was skeptical so I visited the sites in question and verified his story.
This SEO guy presented himself as an expert in the moving business and he has several clients in the industry that I could confirm. What he was doing was adding links on the sites that he was working on to his other clients sites. I counted a whole bunch of links that were going to other movers that should not have been there. My suggestion was to fire this guy on the spot. I just shake my head every time I see something like this. How did he imagine that he could get away with this?
Everything that I do for a client I do it as if I am doing it for this site. I have very high standards, unfortunately this industry is full of those that lack ethics. Everyday, I see scams and garbage SEO offerings, but this one really blew me away. One of the links was actually embedded in the text of a specific topic. The assumption was the link pointed to another page on this site that had more details about this topic. The link actually went to another movers site in another city.
I have a hard time understanding how someone can take money to do a job like this and then do something like this. The problem is that these things happen all to often and it destroys trust. Trust is a key component in this industry. People pay us and trust that we know what we are doing. But they also trust us with access too one of their primary business assets, their websites. This man destroyed that trust and that makes me upset. These things give even the good guys a bum rap.

Geo-targeting SEO Is Catching On Slowly

Update 12/10/2009: This post is near and dear to my heart and apparently Google likes it as well. This was one of the earliest blogging posts that I have written. It really, I believe, talked about a trend that is growing and one that Google has its sights on. It will be rolling out and ad system soon that is associated with its local maps or Local Business Center. It currently is testing in limited local markets. Google knows the numbers and local searches are increasing steadily and Google wants those local internet marketing dollars.
Google is attempting to take market share from local online directories such as City Search and Superpages. Geo-targeting your website to where you all actually doing business is no longer catching on. It has arrived. I had been predicting to would take 2 -3 years to be a major factor in search. The economic, however, has forced the pace of this transition.
On a side note here: Google really has seemed to like this post a lot. The post only has a few links yet it has managed to rise in the search rankings along with the site Geo-targeting page. They have been in tandem almost from the beginning. For the longest time it was stuck at #5 and #6. They now rank #1 and #2. That has always amazed me. The search Gods at Google seem to have blessed this post, which is OK by me.

I originally wrote this post around May of 2008 and the post still continues to rank well for the searches Geo-targeted SEO and Geo-Targeting SEO in Google. Today while checking my search rankings I noticed that this post had a Page Rank of 1. That really surprised me as it has never had many comments or backlinks. When I see things like this it leaves me scratching my head. So here it is again.
Geo-targeting is slowly getting the attention that it deserves. We have offered this service since this business opened in 2007. Sometimes it is referred to as Local SEO as well. Our business model is based on the location of the clients local markets. Like many small business owners their market is local. So they have much less competition than those that play on a national or international stage on the Internet. It’s very easy to do well in local markets, as they are by definition niche markets.
Since search engine optimization is a numbers game and the website that uses Geo-targeting vastly improves their odds of success. Having less competition offers you the opportunity to obtain high search rankings, if you optimize your web site correctly. There is a very good chance that your competition has not optimized their websites. Almost any web site can be optimized, but usually this is the arena of the larger more serious players. When the small business owner optimizes his web site he usually goes to the front the line (think first page of Google.)
Many web designers only think of GIS software when they hear the words Geo-targeting. GIS is the acronym for geographic information software. This software is used on information and on e-commerce sites to assist you in finding information by city and it is also used to target you with local ads.
When we apply Geo-targeting in the optimization process, we are asking the search engines to index your website by a geographic area and by your products or services. So if your website provides carpet cleaning services and you live in Tucson, then we would optimize your website for carpet cleaning in Tucson. It is really that simple. Most local website forgot to say that they want indexed by there location thus they can’t be found in local market searches.
Geo-targeting is the simplest form of optimization available today. It is also the most overlooked aspect of the SEO industry. When you optimize your website by the location that you actually serve you place your business in a winning situation. You can finally use the leverage of the Internet to grow your business.
Geo-targeting has changed dramatically in the 18 months from when this was first written. The economy has forced SEO providers to look locally for work. Until recently there were only a small group of SEO who focused on Geo-targeted work. I had thought that it would take 2 or 3 years to catch on and it likely would have taken that long of not longer had the economy stayed strong.
I have never failed to get a local client high onto the first page of Google using Geo-targeting. It’s all a numbers game and when you play locally the odds are in your favor.

Keeping Up With Page Rank

Keeping Up With Page Rank
This is not a post that indicates some hidden truth or explanation about Page Rank. No, it is simply a post that indicates why I pay so little attention to it. Our site and blog had been sitting with a PR of 3 up until the most recent update. Then they both dropped down to a PR of 2. Both had seen steady increases in links so I was a bit perplexed, but it seemed to be part of a general trend. Many websites are experiencing PR down grades these days.
Then I noticed that our Tucson Small Business Networking Group site had a PR of 4. The site was just launched in May and Yahoo’s Site Explorer showed only 17 backlinks recorded. How could this be? Brand new sites are not supposed to have any PR. So how then did I end up with a PR of 4? This is beyond my understanding. Page rank is supposed to be a delayed report based on months old information.
Then today I discovered that the site and blog now have a PR of 3 and the networking site has experienced a downgrade to a PR 3. Could it be a fluke in the Page Rank? I don’t know. It is still this way days later and nothing has changed!

Can You Meet Or Exceed These Google Search Results December 2009

If you have followed this blog at all then you know that I am a big fan of long tail keyword phrases. This month our ranking report shows that Tucson SEO Solutions is ranking on the first page of Google for 81 keyword phrases. We rank in the # 1 position and amazing 63 times. We also rank both #1 and # 2 for the same keyword phrase 21 times.
We also thought that we would point out that three of our other websites rank both # 1 and # 2 for their primary keyword phrases. I am especially pleased that we are ranking so well for searches that involve link building services. We have gone head to head with the best link building companies around and we have produced superior results. That truly pleases me.
The reality here is that we are not necessarily any better at link building, but that we simply are willing and able to work longer hours than most competitors. We have completely abandoned using stand alone blogs for link building. We focus on Web 2.0 social sites to gain links and this has produced superior results.
