Pizza And Beer SEO

Yep, one of our standard recommendations to our clients is that they practice Pizza and Beer SEO. This is how it works. When you’re building a website keyword list you should gather a diverse group of friends, family, and business associates for pizza and beer at a local hot spot. A group of twenty or so should just fine.
Once you have the group together ask them all to make a list of words that they might enter as a search query to find your business on the web. Then sit back and enjoy your time together over pizza but hold of on the beer for now! Then after and hour or so repeat this process and record the results.
Allow your party to get started with the consumption of beer for the following hour. Now repeat the same process asking what keywords the group would use and record these results as well.
Now, your website keyword research kicks into high gear. Now, you will need create a database and record all of the information that you have gathered. You can now comb through your data to see what the common trends are and glean the gems that you might have easily overlooked.
The food and alcohol will affect each person differently and these changes will be observable in a different set of keywords that are developed. Another factor that comes into play is simply the passage of time. The longer that each person has to think about it the more likely that they will choose words that they hadn’t the first time.
It’s actually like having three different groups for market research for the price of one! Not only is Pizza and Beer SEO an effective keyword development strategy, you also save 66 % of the cost of surveying two separate groups. It also will cut you time cost in half.
You have no way of knowing what peoples state of mind this when they are searching. If you searchers is hungry or well feed these will effect how they think. If someone is highly stressed or under the influence these factors will play a significant role in determining what searches that they will use to find anything on the net.

Do You Have An Amazing Ranking Story To Share?

That’s right Tucson SEO Solutions is doing some bragging today. The sites Local Internet Marketing page ranks # 1 in Google for Local Internet Marketing Services. That’s out of 573 Million web pages. What this means in reality is this. Over a half billion web pages include these four words that are currently indexed by Google.
Is that amazing or what. It trips me out (hippie speak here.) This page has ranked steadily in this position for about 5 months now. I have been able to consistently out rank websites that have been around even longer than Google! The crazy thing about all of this is that in some cases my competition has 10’s of thousands of more backlinks than I do.
So how did I accomplish this fete? Well, I simply applied myself and I began applying the principles enshrined in Scratch My Back Marketing. What I mean is that I use Web 2.0 social media sites and I add valuable and useful comments and content. In turn these sites provide useful Do Follow anchor text backlinks. It really was that simple and once I had chosen this keyword phrase for targeting it only took about six weeks to get to the top and to stay there.
That is why I cringe every time I read where someone is explaining that link building is difficult because I know that it isn’t. But none of this happens in a vacuum. It requires a well thought-out and executed plan along with lots of keyboard time.

An SEOs Love Story – This Is Not About SEO

I help people get there websites properly indexed by Google for their targeted keyword phrases. The idea is to their their websites high up in the search engine results, and more specifically in the Google search results. I really enjoy what I do as it can have an enormously positive impact on my clients business. I believe in a triple win philosophy where the searcher is happy because they found may clients site and they had their want fulfilled. The client is happy because their website is finally producing income and I am happy because they are happy. I really love what I do. I don’t sell useless products or services like many SEO do just to make a buck. My work is truly a labor of love.
But it is a woman named Geri that I meet eight years ago and who I grew to love that has my attention, now. She is dying. She doesn’t like me saying that because she doesn’t want to loose hope. I however must deal with the cards that I have been dealt. Her liver is shot and when your liver isn’t working lots of other body parts begin to fail as well.
She ended up being hospitalized on Thanksgiving and Christmas Day. I took her there again on New Years Day. Every time the visits are getting closer together. On the way to the hospital she jokingly asked what’s the next holiday. Then she wryly asked isn’t there a presidents birthday coming up. Faced with adversity she went for levity.
We don’t have insurance so the emergency room is our entry point for health care. Every time we leave they give us treatment plans that are never fulfilled because we can not pay for them. We have tried to get government assistance but we are still waiting.
Yesterday, they could barely draw blood because she never got the transfusions that she needs ans has lost a lot of blood. The liver helps the blood clotting process and without that she bleeds easily. I feel so guilty that this business could not been able to support her medical needs. I am a very emotional person and writing about our struggles is my release valve.
But out of all of this there was a success story. We made it to the library on New Years Eve. It was our first trip outside the home together since she was put on oxygen 24/7. It may not sound like much but for us it was like a holiday. Later we sat in bed together and talked, not only that, we laughed and smiled. I allowed my silly side to come out and her smile seemed to be the happiest smile that I had ever seen. She actually looked cute from behind her oxygen cannula. It was as if it wasn’t there. I will always cherish that moment, her smile, and that radiant glow. Then she began the downward spiral again.
She would not let me stay this time in the emergency room. She said she could not tolerate seeing me sad sad and uncomfortable and that it was too hard on her. She’s dying and she worrying about me. That is what I would call An SEO love story. As it was I could not sleep. I just put on another pot of coffee and I wait and when I can not wait any more I will call the hospital to find out what room she is in… or if…
An update 01/25/2010: Well, Geri has managed to stay out of the hospital for about 18 days until recently. She has returned again for the fourth time in less than three months. This time she has acquired pneumonia even though she has had a recent vaccine shot. Apparently, it does cover all the various varieties. This is scary stuff. Ever time that she has returned to the hospital a few pints of blood got her feeling better almost withing 24 hours, but not now the rules are different this time around.
I am scared and trying very hard not to show it. She asked me today “Do I looked any better today? The nurses said that I look better.” OMG, I wanted to cry. My response was “You look marvelous, darling.” All the while I was praying that she was to tired to read the pain in my face. I quickly changed the subject.
Again, I want to thank all of who have visited and left us with your kind words and thoughts. I especially want to thank a blogger named Mitch who was returned to follow this story and has left very warm and kind messages.

Do You Appreciate Your Readers?

I have written about this subject in the past and I thought it was time to take another look at this subject.
I have visited thousands of blogs and forums over the last two years. There are two trends that always appear on my radar screen. They are a large group of bloggers who want more comments on their blogs. The second group of bloggers don’t seem to care who is commenting or what is being said.
The whole idea of social media which includes forums and blogs, as well as many other types of sites such as Facebook or MySpace is about being social. Being social is about connecting, discussing and carrying on a discussion. A discussion requires ongoing input to be effective. That’s where many forum posters and blog authors fail.
I see it all the time, someone starts a conversation on a forum or blog and abandons the conversation. You know, someone starts a topic and let’s say its about marketing on Twitter. Then others begin to make comments and some ask questions, but the questions go unanswered. I’ve seen this many times over and over again. Blog posted are started all the time, the discussion begins, and questions are asked but they are not answered by the blogs author.
The problem is that so many blog owners and forum posters don’t follow the post or thread that they started. So these valuable questions go unanswered. The net result is that there is no real conversation. I don’t know about you but I am less likely to return to a blog that has chosen to ignore me or if I see others regularly ignored.
Most of these blogs are not moderated and the comments generally are posted immediately. Now, if that is how these folks want to treat those who leave comments that ok by me. I prefer to take the time to answer the question because I feel it my responsibility, after all I started the conversation and I want to show my appreciation.
These people I believe are missing the whole point of social media. Then there is the second group of bloggers who needs, wants, and desires to have more comments on their blogs. For this group I have a few easy to implement suggestions. The first one is that you need to reward your visitors for making comments.
I am going to make some suggestions here that are basically useless if you have lousy content. It is better to post great content every three days or so or maybe once a week than to waste your time posting just to post. People respond when you post ads value to their lives or stirs up emotions.
You then must learn to promote your blog. I have read hundreds of really useful blogs that lacked comments. We all have heard content is king but that only true if it is found and read. I am not going to go into detail about how to market a blog that’s been covered way to many times by others. If you new to blogging and blog promotion then go to Google and search for something like blog promotion tutorials. You will find lots of useful info.
The easiest way is to increase comments is to make your blog Do Follow. Yes, it will increase spam that’s the is the price you pay for attempting to acquire more comments. Here is how you make Do Follow work for you. First, your blog must be moderated so the spam doesn’t appear on your blog. Then you will need to add a plugin to protect yourself from bot spam. You might want to look into the Bad Behavior plugin.
This plugin will do nothing to stop comment spam from low wage countries such as China, India, Eastern Europe, or from unscrupulous link builders. Most of these comments will end up in your spam filter and will be easy to discard. This blog was averaging about 250 spam comments a day until I installed Bad Behavior. That has been reduced by about 95%. Be careful to actually review these spam comments. I usually pull several comments out of Akismet everyday. They are easier to find when I don’t have to sort through hundreds of comments to find the good ones.
Now, you will want to add the Comment & Keyword Luv plugins. The Comment Luv plugin pulls a permalink from your blogs latest post automatically. The newest version allows you to pull a much wider variety of posts from up to five different blogs. That permalink is added to the end of their comment. So others bloggers are rewarded with a second link. Other bloggers tend to leave better comments and they just might write about you if you have a great blog.
The Keyword Luv plugin allows you to use your name along with your anchor text link of the commenters choosing in the comments name field. This is an extremely valuable incentive for someone to leave a comment especially if they don’t have a blog. However, many purists will never use this plugin because they believe people should comment solely based on the posts content and that they should use a real name. Keyword Luv allows you to use both.
While I respect that opinion I think this position misses the dynamic changes that are occurring in the industry. Acquiring links that allow link juice to flow (Do Follow Links) are increasingly more difficult to obtain. This is especially true since Google began waging war on the practice of buying and selling links. Blogs are now ground zero in the link building game. So why not use this to your advantage?
Finally, there is one final piece of this puzzle to be put into place. You should consider thanking your commenters in an email. I am not talking about using an auto responders here. What I am suggesting is a short email response of a sentence or two that expresses gratitude for the commenter’s efforts. This shows that you genuinely care about the person who left a comment. This will encourage them to return or maybe even mention your blog on their blog. OMG what a concept, showing that you care!
If someone asks a very specific question I often will often answer that question on the blog. I will then respond in person with an answer or I will provide a link back to the answer on the blog. This encourages this person to return to the blog to see your answer. This approach was provided bunches of accolades from my readers. They often are very surprised to get a response. I can’t begin to express the huge amount of good will this has produced.
Now, I will admit that when I get busy I can not respond to all comments. Thus I get a bit choosy when responding. However, if someone has left a truly worthy comment that got my attention I will definitely response. I am still new enough to blogging that I really enjoy most of the comments that I receive here. What really makes my day is when I read the return emails thanking me for responding personally. These are often very real, warm, and heart felt.
In closing I have one more suggestion for you to battle comment spam. I placed a minimum requirement on comments to obtain a link from this blog. The commenter must leave a 20 word comment before I will approve it. Anything less and the comment usually will get deleted. If the comment is short but useful it will be posted without a link.
What this posts is really about is treating your visitors with respect and giving them an incentive to comment and then rewarding them when you get the desired results which are great comments.
Update 06/10/2009 – There was another point that I would like to mention. I verify almost every website that wants a link from me. You need to be careful who you link to these days. While I am verifying if the website is worth linking to I often leave a comment on the blog if they have one. That’s really shows appreciation and really spreads good will.
Update 01/24/2010: I have not done any of what I have suggested over the last few months. This has been due to the fact that Geri, my life partner, is critically ill and has been in and out of the hospital over the last few months. Yet, this has also been a lesson about appreciating your readers. Many of those whom I have personally thanks for there comments have returned in our time of need and shared their caring and warm support. So being nice and appreciating your readers can pay off in ways that you never imagined.

Today I am going to take yet, another look at where we are at as an SEO services/website design website. What we have been able to accomplish in 18 months is nothing short of incredible. This website is ranked on the first page of Google nationally anywhere from 8-13 times for keyword searches that include the search engine optimization acronym SEO. This website was originally designed as a static website but it could be regularly updated using a WSYIWYG editor. This was a nice feature but it wasn’t a blog and it lacked the advantages that a content management system offered.
We can’t overstate the value that a blog hosted on your website can have. And there is an even greater advantage for the website that is built using a CMS. If you haven’t figured it out yet, Google likes “fresh content.” A content management system allows you to add content at will. In most cases, this only requires the ability to type.
Most blogging software can easily be set up to automatically ping whatever site you want. A ping is a message that basically says “Yo’ I have added new content over here.” These sites then visit and record a snippet of your updated information and then make it available to others on their website. Technorati is a good example of such a site.
Millions of visitors flock to these sites that aggregate information from other websites. You simply type in your search query hit enter and bingo you have the latest that the blogosphere has to offer. These sites are designed to work best with content management systems.
This is a huge marketing advantage that a content management system has over a static website. Changes on a static website are often only noted by the search engines when they crawl your website. The public at large will miss these changes. Having the ability to ping creates dozens of websites that are providing you a platform to promote your website. Many of these sites that aggregate this information are the busiest n the world. The advantage here goes to the blog or CMS site.
Many of you may be skeptical, so let me provide you with some interesting numbers. This website existed as a static site for the first year. We were able to acquire roughly 1,000 backlinks from relevant blogs and websites during that year. In April of 08 we transitioned to a WordPress website. Then in May we began the process of branding our website through our blog.
At this time we were doing well building a major presence in the local SEO market. We basically own the SERP’s for anything search engine optimization related in Tucson. It took a content management system to be able to become a national SEO player in the search rankings.
When the site became a WordPress website it had no national presence for SEO. The best that we could do was number 35 for local SEO. Four months of blogging has moved us onto the first and second pages for this search. So do I believe in the power of a blog, content management systems, and fresh content, you bet!
In just four months we have acquired more than 5500 backlinks (most of these are industry related.) We have been written about or mentioned in another 30 or so blogs. We have a game plan and we are working that plan. We have already posted 150 articles on the blog. We created some good linkbait and we promote our blog often.
These accomplishments could not have occurred using a static website. I truly believe if a website transitions to a CMS such as WordPress it will begin to crush the competition. You must be prepared to put in the time and effort and If you are motivated and willing to work a specific marketing plan and blog almost daily, then my friends anything is possible. There are no secrets to success, it merely requires desire, a plan properly executed, long hours, and the ability to work smart and not hard.
Update 05/17/2009 After one year as a blog this is what we have to report. Having a blog has allowed us to acquire an additional 8,000 links to our website. Now, we lost about 3,000 links because forums that we actively used went out of business or changed their link policy. Had these changes not occurred that number would be close to 11,000. This has vaulted our website from a regional SEO player to a national leader in SEO search results across multiple keyword phrases. We could not have accomplished this as a static website.

You May Be Ranking Better In The Google Search Results Than You Think

This post was originally created back in the spring of 2009. I had driven up to Phoenix to attend an SEO Meet-up group. The topic was “What are some of your favorite internet marketing resources.” During the discussion it was mentioned that Google results may very. I found the information shared in this post so important that I have shared it on several hundred social media websites. Today, I have added another update about a real life version of this story.
The original version was titled ‘You May Not Be Ranking As Well In The Google Results As You Think.” What I discovered is that most people will be ranking higher than they think. I will explain.
If you are a website owner with an interest in internet marketing you may be getting inaccurate Google search results. Google changed how it delivers its search results a few years back. They call this personalized search and it works when you are logged into a Google account.
Here is what is occurring with personalized searches. If you are like many marketers and website owners you may be a little bit obsessed with how well that your website or sites are ranking in the Google results. This obsession likely causes you to check your search results daily or multiple times each day. This constant checking isn’t a bad thing in and off itself. However, if you start clicking onto any of the websites listed in the results it will alter what you are seeing in its results pages in the future.
The results that you are getting may be false and may not be what others are seeing when they use Google. When you are in one of your Google accounts it records your reactions to its results. Whatever sites that you click on are recorder as a vote of sorts for that website. So if you are click on your website or your competition it eventually will alter the results that Google provides but only to your account.
If you have a habit on clicking onto your own site or the competition when searching from a Google account it will definitely alters the search results that are provided to your account. I was reminded of this fact today. I was checking to see where we were ranking for the search Arizona SEO. We had been ranking in the 10th position. Today, when I checked the results had us at # 1. My first reaction was wow, that a big jump. Then I glanced up to notice that I was in a Google account. As soon as I logged out the results went back to the # 10 position. This is what I had accepted to see.
This can go the other way as well. If you have a habit of clicking on your competitor’s sites while searching it will eventually start ranking them higher than they actually appear to the general public. This is where most of the general public will run into problems with personalized results. They are so used to checking on the competition and this eventually pushes there site down in the search rankings that they are viewing in their Google account.
This also unfortunately offers unscrupulous SEO providers a tool to manipulate potential clients so do beware of this. If some one is providing a demonstration of how well they rank or their clients rank check to see if they are logged into a Google account. So do ask them to show you their results from outside a Google account. The differences can be amazing. Don’t accept no for an answer here. This really is that important.
Just another thing I though that you could use. It is the little things that we have to be aware of that can make a huge difference.
The Update: 01/14/2009
A few weeks back I had a conversation with a potential client. This mans website covered a very niche keyword phrase related to a specific educational program. He stated that even though there was almost no competition for his market that his site was buried on page two of the SERP’s. This is a very common experience for many and that why they call for my assistance.
However, when I searched for his website I discovered that his site was sitting in the fifth position on the first page of the Google search results. The difference here is that he had been using his account to search for his keyword phrase. Then he clicked onto his competitors sites. The result was that these sites improved in his results and his website declined in the rankings. This insight saved him $650.00 as he would not be requiring link building training and a detail website review. He decided that it was OK with being in the 5th position.
I very easily could have kept quiet and accepted this mans business. Then without doing anything I could have showed improved results but I don’t operate that way. Unfortunately, in these tough economic times some will succumb to this temptation. It really does pay to be cautious when buying internet services. Way too many people are willing to do anything and to tell you anything to make a buck.
The lesson here is to go straight to Google to do your keyword rankings searches. This will give you better and more accurate search results

Scratch My Back Marketing Explained
I have been discussing what I call Scratch My Back Marketing since the beginning of the year. I figured that it was finally time to write a specific post on the topic. Scratch My Back Marketing is based on a lifestyle and spiritual principal of giving to get. That’s right as in is better to give than receive. Now, I have nothing against receiving especially if it involves material resources such as capital. However, for our purposes I will settle for great comments left on the blog.
When I reference giving I do so with link building efforts in mind. If you have been around internet marketing for any length of time you will have discovered the importance of links. More specifically I am referring to other websites that link to your site. These links are known as backlinks. They are the foundation of Google’s algorithm. Applying SEO to a website is good but it needs to be combined with a steady link building effort to be effective. Acquiring these links is becoming a huge challenge.
Now a days, we must locate social media websites, blogs, and forums that allow user generated content to build links. Google has made it very clear that it does like the practice of buying and selling links. For these sites to be useful in gaining higher search rankings these sites must provide what is known as Do Follow links. These Do Follow links have the ability to pass link juice. It is this juice that will assist your website in gaining and maintaining high search engine rankings.
The idea behind Scratch My Back Marketing is that the website user will exchange useful content and comments for useful Do Follow links. This is the genesis of our approach. This same approach can also be applied to sites that offer No Follow links. These No Follow links will not assist you in achieving higher search ranking. But they are useful in generating website traffic and business. This way both the website user and the website owner join together for the higher good of both. It is a classic example of a win/win situation. This blog requires a 20 word minimum to acquire an anchor text Keyword Luv Do Follow link.
The reality is that those short drive by spammy comments will likely get deleted on most blogs worth posting on. I ask is it better to post 10 short thank you comments and maybe get one or two links or post 4 good comment on good blogs and get them all accepted? Both scenarios will take about the same amount of time. Yes, leaving good comments takes time but it does pay off with better results for your efforts. This is often knows as your Return On Investment. The investment here is time or money if you are paying for some one to build links for you.
Quality comments also lend a certain amount respect and will assist in building a blogs reputation. These quality comment also provide what is commonly known as the fresh content bump. Google and the other search engines often reward fresh content by moving a blog or site up in the search rankings.
There will likely be an additional benefit if enough people by into the concept of Scratching My Back Marketing. It should encourage more bloggers to become or stay Do Follow. Let’s face it folks someone as got to stand up as a voice of reason here. The ability to acquire useful Do Follow links is getting more difficult everyday.
Update 08/27/2009: When you leave a comment you will see the Scratch My Back Marketing plugin in action. Just asking people to leave a useful comment of 20 words did not work. They mostly ignored this on their way to attempting to get a link. So after six months of being ignored we are forcing the issue. You are now required to leaving a minimum comment of 150 characters to acquire a link and only if the comment is relevant to the discussion.

The Dangers Of Honest Blogging

The fact is that the world, no make that the internet is full of rude people who hide their identies but not their thoughts. What I am referring to is my recent posts here and on other sites about Geri’s struggles with her health issues. She has ended up in the hopsital on Thanksgiving Day, Christmas, and New Years Days.
The last trip was extremely scarey for me as the visits to the hospital were comming closer and clopser together. She didn’t have insurance at the time thus she could not get or afford her follow-up care. We are dealing with life and death issue here and I have paid a price her being honest. The lastest insult was a comment on a post that I did about her return from the hospital on Christmas Day and that was all the present that I needed.
I poured out my heart on a forum called Hall Pass. I picked it for no specific reason other than I was visiting the site and I neeeded to tell my story. There were sereral nice supportive comments. Then a very rude one. It simply read “Ger’is gonna die deal with it we all die” or somethin to that effect. I was extremely upset by this rude behavior. I started to respond and then I stopped myself. I thought getting me angry was the whole purpose behind such a comment. So I persued a high pathway. I choose to respond to the positive comments rather than the negative. I though I’m not giving this person validation.
These are just a few examples of what I have experienced and what others have experienced by being honest in their blog posts and since its my blog I will continue to do so. On a positive note: writing about our life and death struggles has been very beneficial for me. I am a very private person in my day to day life. I don’t enjoy a large support group that is why I turned to blogging and it has worked very well. When I started writing about Geri’s life and death struggles it was interupted with bitter weeping and sobbing. I have overcome that, at least for now!
On the update front: Geri has returned home from the hospital. While she was there she was approved for Arizona’s version of Medicaid. So now, she can be seen by all of her specialists and receive all the meds that she needs. However, getting to see her primary care doctor was a bit of a challenge. When she called they gave her and appointment two weeks out. At that rate she will have returned to the hospital again without follow up care. I called the service provided and they offered to move up the appointment three days. I responded that even by then she will have likely been back in the hospital without ever have received follow-up care.
I was told that she would see what she could do. Amazingly, the phone rang within minutes. It was the primary care physicians office. They were offering a Monday appointment. Yea… What this means is I now am wearing another hat. This one belongs to the appointment setter which I don’t mind. As I later explain to Geri sometimes the squeaky wheel gets the oil.
As things settle down here I hope to finish a lengthy series on link building… Maybe!

SEO Is Only Part Of The Solution

Recently, I had a discussion with our first SEO client. He had moved from his previous job in Tucson to a larger firm in Phoenix. His employer has four websites and he asked me to give him a bid for our search engines optimization services.
This was a very exciting opportunity but, I proceeded with caution. When I worked for this company it had a really bad website. I did a detailed website review and made a multitude of suggestion to improve the site before applying any SEO. The company was a moving and storage concern with a local customer base here in Tucson.
I was ecstatic. Going in I knew that we had a wonderful opportunity here to apply Geo-targeted SEO solutions. I believed that we would have tremendous impact for local moving company searches in Tucson. It was if all the stars had aligned in my favor. It wasn’t a competitive market and the competition did not have very well optimized websites. It looked like a slam dunk and it was. The problem is the company never made the needed changes to have a user friendly website.
When the SEO process began you could find this website 3 times on Google’s first page of results for moving services in Tucson. Two weeks after I had implemented Geo-targeting for their business in Tucson their was a dramatic change. Now, the site was ranking 16 times on the first page of Google. By the time 30 days had rolled around you could find the site 33 different times on the Google first pages. It was as if we were in SEO nirvana. This was my first paying client.
The problem was that their website still was still a dreadful site. The home page included maybe 100 words that were not created very well. Things didn’t work all over the site. The site was not converting visitors into customers. What I learned from this experience was this. I would never again SEO a broken website. This company got lots of traffic from my SEO efforts but very little of that increased traffic converted into business. Broken websites don’t usually convert visitors no matter how many people visit.
It’s hard to overcome a bad website and the negative messages that it screams is deafening. It is very difficult to overcome an initial bad experience. You must always be cognizant that your visitor has their hand on there mouse and a quick and painless exit is a mere one click away. Your visitors are needing, wanting, and desiring to have their expectations meet or exceeded. Sadly most websites fail miserably.
From that time forward we made an ethical decision not to work on websites if all they wanted was increased traffic. We really wanted our efforts to not only increase traffic but we wanted that traffic to convert from visitors to customers. We want our clients to prosper from our efforts. We are not in SEO just to make a buck.
This is why we strongly believe in a holistic SEO approach where search engine optimization is not the solution, but part of the solution. If you have a defective website increased traffic is not going to make much difference.
Quit often the website owners do not have any idea that their website is even defective. I recently commented to a website owner that he should not worry about SEO because he needed to fix his website first. He was flabbergasted. He was clueless that their might be any thing wrong with his site and it had buckets of problems. This is especially true for the DIY designed websites. They often look like a elementary school group project.
Our standard recommendation is that your website needs to be as good as if not better than your major competitors. I am discussing functionality and ease of use here. If you make it difficult for the visitor to find what they came for they are gone and gone quickly. Searchers scan websites to find what they desire and they have short attention spans. Again you job is to meet or exceed the visitors expectations.
Another area that is overlooked is the content. Most websites owners wrote their own copy and most of them are not professional marketing professionals. So you have someone writing your content that merely provides information and not selling. I have seen beautiful sites where everything worked and worked well except the content. Website content needs to be written using a sales funnel that directs the visitor or make a buying decision.
That is why we practice a holistic approach to SEO. We do so with the understanding that if your website isn’t likely to convert visitors into customers then why increase traffic. The problem is that many websites have never had much traffic so they have no way of judging whether the site converts visitors or not. Once the fixing and or re-designing has been completed we then provide the SEO portion. But there’s more to do if you want to gain and maintain high search rankings.
The fact remains that most website developers just don’t understand marketing and selling on a website. For many a “buy now” button is all that is required. Ask yourself this does my website sell? Do I ask for the sale? Does your website act as a sales funnel that directs your visitor into a buying decision? If you answered no to any of these questions then you might be ready for a holistic SEO approach.
Once the defective site has been fixed and optimized it then must enter another phase of the process. Where you will then need to market your website and develop backlinks. As we like to say, SEO is never a one and done proposition.
My first client was somewhat shocked that I was not very interested in his project. I explained that I had changed how I do business due to my previous experience with him. I was willing to provide a holistic SEO approach, but not merely SEO alone. It was later revealed that he had acquired bids from several other companies. These companies would gladly produce increased traffic without regards to whether that traffic would ever convert into customers. At that point we parted ways. This was a huge contract but we were not about to compromise our position.
So if you are actively looking to hire an SEO provider make sure they give serious consideration to the total health of your website. Providing assistance in developing your content into a sales presentation before you venture into acquiring increased website traffic through the implementation of SEO.
SEO isn’t the answer by itself; it is only part of the solution.

This month results really continues to surprise me with all that has been going on with illness in my family the site continues to excel in the keyword phrases that we target. This month we rank on the first page of the Google results for 88 keyword phrases. We rank in the # 1 position for 63 keyword phrases and 32 times we rank both # 1 and # 2. Finally, there are 6 phrases that we placed 2 pages onto the first page of the Google search results.

TSBNG An Association Of Local Businesses

I am way stoked, thrilled and jumping for joy over the launching of our Ning based social network. I had been very active on another similar business networking association here in Tucson. However, that sites owner banned me from his site. That was Thursday afternoon and by Sunday evening this site was a reality. It was only a matter of time before I launched my own site.
Heck, I was putting in two hours a day on local social networking on a site that I did not own. So now, I am putting in the effort building a network of my own. I get to call the shots here and I like that. One of the advantages for me is that I don’t have a profit motive here. While I do hope to acquire business through referrals, the site is not meant to be a profit center.
I really love what I do and I love sharing what I know. There are so many tremendous opportunities available that I want to share that with other local small business owners. In many way I see myself as a small business advocate. Buying web related services can be a daunting task and fraught with anxiety. It is very easy to make mistakes. I should know I have made my share so that my members don’t have too.
I have purchased the domain Tucson Small Business Networking Group it should hopefully be redirecting traffic to the site soon. I have very high expectations that we will be ranking high for the search Tucson networking groups very soon.
Update: The redirect is in place and working. The normal 301 however would not work Ning required what is know as a Cname to work properly. This was news to me! I must admit that I still learn something new almost everyday in this business.
You can Optimize your pages but it is based on the Page Title matching the post title which is OK. However, with WordPress I can make the Post title and Page different which I do almost every time. Ning also does allow you to choose your page description. While page description does not affect search rankings it does affect click thoughts to your website. Since about 45% of searchers will decide to visit your site based on the description this is very important. Given this is a not for profit site I can live with this.

Slow Loading Pages – Are They Costing You Business?

Does your website load quickly? Many a potential customer will never reach your website because of slow loading pages. We have all experienced this. You do your Google search and you see a promising website. You then click onto that link and wait and wait some more. Then you simply give up and try another site.
A slow loading website will drive potential visitors away long before your website ever opens. You have about two seconds to accomplish this. I call it the Google effect. Web surfers are so used to Google providing search results instantly. They then expect this quickness from all websites all the time.
The problem isn’t limited to small business websites that may have been home built. They actually often load very quickly because they don’t have many people visiting at the same time or they are loaded with a lot of graphics. Retail e-commerce sites are notoriously slow loading for a variety of reasons. There are literally Billions of dollars lost annually due to slow loading pages. This problem may require a bit of website redesign to resolve.
A general rule of thumb is that you have about two seconds maybe three for your site to open. If it takes any longer your potential visitors leave quickly to try another option. The more web savvy your visitor the quicker they leave. Imagine if your website is slow loading for a cable connection, and then imagine how slow the process is for DSL, dial-up service, or for someone using a notebook and using a Wi-Fi connection.
Update: 04/25/2009 – When I wrote this story when I knew that I had very slow loading pages. My website developed at the time swore it was WordPress that was the problem. My current developer said the old web host, 1 and 1 was the problem as they have really slow servers. I switched to Host Gator and the difference was amazing almost like a night and day difference.
The moral of this story is, don’t loose your visitor before they actually see your website.
