Google Places Search Provides Blogger’s A Louder Local Voice
I have been writing about Google Places Search a lot lately. It seems like there is something new to be discovered everyday. Then today, I was searching for the url for the original Google announcement about Places Search, so I could update yesterdays post, Places Likes Are The New Off Page SEO. I had failed to include live links to the post and wanted to add them. That’s when I noticed this and did a screen shot.
My post from yesterday was now ranking for locally based searches for Google Places Search in the third position. It was sandwiched between multiple Google listings. This kind of stuff has been happening a lot lately. It just goes to show the power of the blog when writing about current events. Your posts can now gain prominence for your topic in your community and very quickly.
Previous to Places Search, I would likely have had to include the word Tucson in the Page Title to have acquired a ranking like this so quickly. Even then it might have been difficult to accomplish something similar. This has huge implications as Places Search is opening new vistas of opportunity locally. But this also may make getting noticed on a national scale much more difficult.
I just can’t seem to say enough good things about Places Search, but then I am coming from a position of strength in the local rankings. I have also been noticing that the top three or four sites for local markets are doing very well but others lower in the rankings it a not so much situation.
The reality here is that 60 -80% of searches do not express a local intent when searching. But Google still will provide them with a mix of national and locally based organic results. And if there are local competitors with Places listing these are included as well.
For my industry there are certain services that Google does not allow to be used in our Places listings. You can not use the word Google or Google Places in your listings. So even though I provide Google Places SEO I can not promote this here. But with any roadblock there are always options and the ones Places provides are much to my liking.
I now, am able to connect with local businesses that were just simply typing in SEO or Search Engine Optimization. Previously, I had missed this large pool of potential customers. So you can count me in as a big fan of anything that gets may site in front of eyeballs in Tucson Yuma, Ajo, or Kingman. Even though we have a very large national presence most of my business is local or Arizona based. So having the ability to get in front of this group is huge.
This is all because of Places Search and I am not alone here. Without doing anything additional Google is gifting many top local sites with a larger basket of potential customers. So I have to ask how is your local website ranking?

Google Places Listings Go Beyond Page One
I just saw something new (again) that I have never seen before in the Google Places search results. Today, I was doing some research for a client when I came across this. Google was providing Places Business Listing on page two and sometimes page three of the results.

Google Places Search Continues To Amaze Me

Google Places Search Continues To Amaze Me
Everyday since Google rolled-out it Places Search format I can’t wait to get online to see what new and ready to be discovered. We have ranked # 1 in the Tucson market for the search Google Places SEO for several months that I know of. But since Google doesn’t allow you to optimize your Places listing for Places SEO I haven’t paid much attention to this specific search.
Then today while doing some research for blog posts on Places I thought that I would check our rankings for the Tucson market. There has been some new players making appearances in the results so I am monitoring these things more closely. That’s when I discovered this and I immediately did a screen shot and headed over to my blog to share this.
I expected to see that the site was ranking both #1 and # 2 so this was not a surprise. The surprise was that the site also ranked # 3 and # 4. This came as a pleasant surprise and it is something that would not have appeared prior to the advent of Places Search. But what really blew me away was the the next two listings are for my Twitter account.
I always automatically update Twitter when I post something new on this blog. Now, my tweets are becoming part of the SERP’s. This gives Tucson SEO Solutions the first six listings for the search for Google Places SEO in Tucson. And it also gives us a huge advantage over our competitors for this market. If you were looking for a Places SEO provider in Tucson it’s highly likely that your not going to ever get to the numbers 7, 8, 9, or 10th result before you visit this site.
This is also why I really enjoy this business. I don’t just talk a good game. No I am a top producer in our markets because I understand my markets and market forces well. As I like to say, not only do I talk the talk but I walk the walk. I live, eat, and breath SEO. So much so that I even dream SEO. Also I can honestly proclaim that I have never failed to get my clients onto the first page of the Google results for multiple keyword phrases and this applies to Places as well!
This is also a good example that I will use to educate future perspective clients. If your main competitors has been solidly ranking # 1 in their markets for an extended period of time it will be difficult to overcome their huge advantages. Of course, it not impossible but it will usually take an undivided effort.
This is why I recommend that my clients consider going after some low lying fruit while they are tackling their most difficult target. In most local markets there is almost always some keyword phrases that are easy targets to overcome while you address the more difficult tasks.
Let’s take for an example Carpet Cleaning which previously had both a strong set of local and national competitors. In this case I would suggest targeting Green Carpet Cleaning or Extraction Carpet Cleaning in your geographic areas first. These longer tailed searches will be your low lying fruit . Because they are much easier keyword phrases you might move up the rankings quickly and obtain some new business. Its always nice to increase business while you work on your more difficult primary keyword phrase.
This is even more important now that Google Places Search has arrived on the scene. In many search results the national sites are now taking a backseat to the local vendor. This will increase opportunities for all local players.

Life’s Good

Life’s Good
Yep, I can honestly say that life is good. Yes, I still have my challenges both in business and out of the business world. But Life is Good!
The most gratifying things is that my life partner, who is critically ill, and in need of a new liver, is doing well. So much so that we are planning a short road trip to a close by nighttime balloon festival. With a full moon thrown in for good measure. Yes, Life is Good!
I consider Life Good with all of the new changes that Google is throwing our way. Google is delivering new products at a dizzying pace lately. These changes bring with them many new challenges and for me that makes Life Good. I like challenges! I like competition and I like competitors and for me this makes Life Good!
One of these new features is what Google calls Places Search. Google is really putting the emphasis on local search. This just happens to be may area of expertise. So the launch of this new search algorithm did not take me by surprise. Thus Life’s Good!
These new changes are producing higher visitors volumes on the site and that makes Life Good. The site is also ranking well for searches done locally without a local intent expressed. The site now ranks well locally for the searches SEO and Search Engine Optimization from local Tucson ip addresses. And again I must say Life’s Good.
Previously, when someone in Tucson searched for these business related keywords 60 – 80 % of the time they would not see my site. Now, we are the first local business showing in the Google SERP’s. And I say Life’s Good! There are new competitors in my Tucson market that are challenging my prominence. This only makes me sharper and more focused and that’s another example of Life’s Good for me!
This time last year my honey, Geri was dying and now she has stabilized and doing extremely well for the circumstances. So all I can say is Life’s Good!

Places Likes Are The New Off Page SEO

Places Likes Are The New Off Page SEO
Lately, like most SEO providers we have been studying Google’s new Places Search. I have been comparing the need for likes or reviews in the Places algorithm as the equivalent to Off Page SEO or link building. I believe this so much that I included this analogy in a recent Local SEO training video.
Then today, I received a newsletter from Bruce Clay a well known SEO instructor. In his letter he includes an excerpt to his post, Are Likes the New Links? I visited his blog to finish the article. He gave a historical view of link building and “likes.” It was a very refreshing post. Bruce pretty much said what I have been saying that likes and links are very similar and they are.
Link building is activities on other sites that generate links pointing to your site. This activity plays a very large role in the big SEO picture. Likes or reviews are very similar in that they require actions on other sites such as a review on other sites or reviews directly placed on your Places page.
We all know what happened to links, right? Do we really expect these reviews to be strictly left to fate? That’s not likely to happen. Google has taken steps to control review spam through a new service it is calling Hotpot. It acts like review central for Google Places. I will be following up in a few days with a post that explains Hotpot in detail.
