No I Don’t Want To Help You

This was first posted in 2009.

Now, that’s a very odd tittle for me to use. I really do enjoy helping others in a variety of different ways. That is one big reason why I blog. I am an educator at heart and by training. Having said that I have had to say no a lot in this past month. It seems that some individuals think Tucson is a good spot to set up an SEO business. That’s ok with me. I relish the new competition and when I discover my new competition I generally welcome them.

However, I have been saying no a lot lately to these new competitors. They have been calling me on the phone and emailing me quit a bit lately. They want to be direct competitors of mine and they expect that I should not only welcome them but also assist them!

They all want my expertise and experience provided for free. They want to know everything about the market for SEO in Tucson. The best offer that I have received is an offer to lunch! Heck, I have even turned down a paid offers a few months back.

I was amazed when I got the first request, but the requests kept coming. I have had five such requests in the last month alone. I can not fathom where these men are coming from. They want explicit information about SEO and the market conditions in Tucson and they expect that I should be willing to meet their desires. Not only that, they expect this information for free!

All of these individuals start off their conversations by stating that they have noticed that  am all over the internet for anything SEO related in Tucson. Of course this is true. But stroking me about how good I am, is only stating the obvious and doesn’t impress me. No ego boost is going to change my mind.

I got burnt early on by a web developer here in Tucson and I am extremely cautious. This person hired me do to a project for him with the understanding that I would get all of his  SEO work. Problem is the work never arrived.  I showed him the ropes and that was it. I was now competing with the person that I had helped. As the saying goes once bitten twice shy.

My response was very straight forward “I have no interest helping someone so they can compete with me.” Everyone who contacted me seemed shocked that the Big Dog of SEO in Tucson didn’t want to assist them and I didn’t care. The economy is tough all over and I am not going to assist someone who may later take bread off my table. So I have become every good at saying No.

Now, having said that I still offer loads of free advice on this blog and off. Last week a woman called requesting assistance on getting her website noticed. The site ended up being a very generic one page website. This person had no money for my services but I spent a very long time talking and educating this woman.

The site offers Christian music but the site had no real focus. I spent much of the discussion and  providing resources. We also discussed defining her sites keywords. When I asked her to define what her sight was about she could not provide a good answer. I recommended that she do some research with people where she goes to fellowship with to provide her with input about the site and how they might search for her music.

Any website that wants to be successful has to define what their website was about (keywords). I pointed out that if she focused on the keywords “Christian music” that she would have a huge amount of competition. I also explained that she would need lots of time and resources to accomplish ranking well in this area. I further explained that she needed to do lots of research to find out how others would search for her music. I went on to explain that she would need to create an interactive website to be able to take better advantage of her music. I ended up recommending that she consider WordPress.

I really enjoy conversations like this. While I am not producing billable hours I am making a deposit in the bank of good will. I truly believe in what goes around comes around. This  isn’t an isolated event. I will assist just about anyone who calls,  who is sincere,  but generally clueless about SEO and Internet Marketing. By the way, I have saved these folks tens of thousands of dollars in the process and that makes my days!

Well, that’s my story and I’m sticking with it!

Slow Loading Pages Are They Costing You Business V 2.0

January 29, 2011

Welcome to the Google Places SEO blog at Tucson SEO Solutions.

Slow Loading Pages Are They Costing You Business V 2.0

Does your website load quickly? Many a potential customer will never reach your website because of slow loading pages. We have all experienced this. You do your Google search and you see a promising website. You then click onto that link and wait and wait some more. Then you simply give up and try another site.

A slow loading website will drive potential visitors away long before your website ever opens. You have about two seconds to accomplish this. I call it the Google effect. Web surfers are so used to Google providing search results instantly. They then expect this quickness from all websites all the time.

The problem isn’t limited to small business websites that may have been home built. They actually often load very quickly because they don’t have many people visiting at the same time or they are loaded with a lot of graphics. Retail e-commerce sites are notoriously slow loading for a variety of reasons. There are literally Billions of dollars lost annually due to slow loading pages. This problem may require a bit of website redesign to resolve.

A general rule of thumb is that you have about two seconds maybe three for your site to open. If it takes any longer your potential visitors leave quickly to try another option. The more web savvy your visitor the quicker they leave. Imagine if your website is slow loading for a cable connection, and then imagine how slow the process is for DSL, dial-up service, or for someone using a notebook and using a Wi-Fi connection.

Update: 04/25/2009 – When I wrote this story when I knew that I had very slow loading pages. My website developed at the time swore it was WordPress that was the problem.  My current developer said the old web host, 1 and 1 was the problem as they have really slow servers. I switched to Host Gator and the difference was amazing almost like a  night and day difference.

Update 06/01/2010: Well, loading time is so important that Google has now included this element into it’s algorithm. Google also recently put out a video to explain there reasons behind the move. As part of that video it addressed a joint study by Google and Microsoft. That study indicated that e-commerce sites have two seconds to open before people start abandoning them.

I for one am very happy to see this happen!

The moral of this story is, don’t loose your visitor before they actually see your website.

How to Construct Page Titles For High Rankings

January 27, 2011

Welcome to the Google Places SEO blog at Tucson SEO Solutions.

How to Construct Page Titles For High Rankings

This is an update of a post from 2008.

We have learned, as many of you have the importance of creating effective Page Titles for your website. When talking to clients, potential clients, or individuals at business mixers this is how we explain Page Titles. We compare Page Titles to the “location, location, location” mantra of real estate. The Page Title is that important if you want to rank your website well in the search results.

A lot has been written about the use of effective keywords in page titles. Google limits the length of the page title shown in its results to around 70 characters. You can go longer and it will be indexed, but it will not appear in the SERP’s. If you’ve ever seen a title in the results that ended like this … then you know that the title went beyond the 70 character limit. This limit includes spaces. There is a very good reason why you should not go long. Around 45% or so of web searchers use the Page Title when choosing to click on a result. So if your keyword appears beyond the space limit it will be out of view. Out of sight often means that your effort has been wasted. Don’t get greedy and over optimize as it will work against you.

Also don’t include throw away words like  and or the. Eliminate using symbols such as @,$,!, or & and also avoid using commas. We are going to take a look at the home page title from our old house cleaning website. This site launched an SEO career. It should become apparent why very soon. The Page Title reads:

Tucson House Home Cleaning Janitorial Service Office Business

And these are some of the possible combination of keywords that include the Geo-targeted keyword Tucson.

Tucson Cleaning Service

Tucson House Cleaning

Tucson House Cleaning Service

Tucson Home Cleaning

Tucson Home Cleaning Service

Tucson Janitorial

Tucson Janitorial Service

Tucson Janitorial Cleaning Service

Tucson Office Cleaning

Tucson Office Cleaning Service

Tucson Business Cleaning

Tucson Business Cleaning Service

So this gives us a total of 12 Keyword phrases in the title.

This is how I ruled the SERP’s in Tucson for our cleaning service website. It ranked for 33 different keyword phrases on the first page of the Google results. Did I say that we closed that business and now exclusively provide SEO services.

Sure these are niche markets that have very few searches every day or month. That’s why a local business or niche website must target long tail keywords. You must target as many possible keyword phrases related to your business as possible.

I have had many SEO professionals berate me for my niche approach to SEO. They always say “Well, that keyword doesn’t get many searches.” I counter it does matter because I rank well for the services that I offer and in the markets where I offer them. Some people have a hard time acknowledging others who are successful in their field of business.

The real beauty of page titles is getting two pages indexed on the first page of the Google results. This can be easily done if you target the same keyword phrase on two pages. Just to a Google search for Tucson SEO or Tucson SEO Solutions and you will see what I mean. Just make minor changes in the titles and you’ll be OK. Never, I mean never use duplicate page titles.

Remember never repeat the same word twice in your page titles it is a total waste. Strangely, I see SEO’ers doing this mistake all the time and I laugh at their folly and inexperience.

When you create your page titles it is better if you list your product or service first then add the city. SEO Tucson is how real searchers will find my business. SEO guys will usually search for Tucson SEO. I have followed the differences for several years and this is what I have found. Those who search using SEO Tucson stay longer on the site and they visit more pages.

Here is the reason why this is so. Someone searchers for SEO first and they don’t find what they were looking for. Then they search again and add Tucson to their search query. However, this trend is disappearing for those who use Google as it delivers results based on your ip address. So even if you did not express a local intent Google may provide you with local results or a mix of local and national depending on the competitive nature of your query.

Are you ready to create effective page titles?

Oh, Bye The Way Did I Tell I Have Given Up On Blogging For Links

January 26, 2011

Welcome to the Google Places SEO blog at Tucson SEO Solutions.

Oh, Bye The Way Did I Tell I Have Given Up On Blogging For Links

This post was originally posted in  2009.

For those who are new to this blog let me get you up to speed here. I have been a very big proponent of blogging for links. As with everything I am always multi- tasking. I endeavor to do multiple tasks at once. I like to consider it working smarter. When I would be blogging for links (leaving comments on other blogs to acquire backlinks) I would also be working on branding, networking, and learning.

Leaving blog comments solved four various elements of my marketing plan. I especially enjoyed the learning part of link building. I then would share what I learned with my readers. However, it has become increasing difficult for me as an SEO to get my comments past spam filters. Many blogger’s consider anyone that uses SEO as an anchor text for their comment links to be a spammer.

It didn’t make any difference that I was providing lengthy useful comments because I was using SEO in the name field the spam filters automatically rejected me. On occasion someone who would rescue my comment from a spam filter but not often. With this in mind, I did a little experiment where I made 100 posts and recorded the url’s. I went back a week later only to discover 43% of my comments had been approved. I was very careful to leave good comments and to follow comment policies.

That is not what I would call a very effective link building experiment. So I thought about this for a little while and I decided to go another direction. I now almost exclusively build link on high Page Rank social media sites and I am glad that I do. If any of you have followed this blog you will likely already know that this site ranks on the first page of the Google results, as in 50 times.

That’s right, I report at the beginning of each month the sites rankings. The last time that I checked back on September first we ranked on the first page of Google for 50 keyword phrases. Some of these are not very competitive but they still are niche markets that we target. Then again, many of these results are in extremely competitive markets. The key to this success was abandoning blogging for links.

When I decided to abandon blogs the site ranked 31 times on the first page of Google. Two months later that number is at 50. Over the last two months I have almost exclusively used Web 2.0 social media sites for link building. I usually leave a site with 2 or more links. The process is extremely easy if you are prepared. I simply take what the site offers in the profile area. Then I add value to the site through blog or forum posts and comments. I take the time to do it right!

I have many blog posts covering multiple topics ready in advance. The key here is to provide quality and not spammy posts. I close all posts using a signature as if it was a formal business letter. It includes a tag line. That’s where I add my links, into the tag line. As long as you are adding quality material that goes along with the sites theme you are generally not going to have any problems.

I have used this method thousands of times and only once did I get a complaint. That site banned me for putting links into my profile although they didn’t have a policy that prohibited this at that time. I got in trouble by reviewing the site on this blog. So all a sudden a whole bunch of people are doing the same thing. OOP’s!

That’s my method. The real beauty of this is that you are not visiting a blog hoping to find something to comment about. You pick the topic hopefully something that is related to your business and the sites theme. Many of these social sites provide you with a blog or they have a forum. When I discover these I begin to grin. This all goes hand in hand with my marketing approach, Scratch My Back Marketing. If you help other people building links is easy. It still requires lots of time but it can be a joy rather than dull boring work.

What say you?

Blogging For Links What You Need To Be Successful 2

January 25, 2011

Welcome to the Google Places SEO blog at Tucson SEO Solutions.

Blogging For Links What You Need To Be Successful 2

This post was originally written back in 2009.

Now, that I have gotten my frustrations off my chest in the previous post, it’s time to get down to business. I will start off by claiming to actually know something about link building. First, I would like to direct you to my post on how well this site ranks for our targeted keyword phrases. As of October 1 we ranked for over 60 keyword phrases. I would especially like to point out that we rank anywhere from #5 to # 1  in Google for the keyword phrase Backlinks Building Services.

Let me make it clear that this was not accomplished by a large staff of link builders it was accomplished by one person and that person is Urban. Many of the keyword phrases that I target include highly competitive phrases that include either the words SEO or internet marketing in them. No, building links is not all that I do, but I spend more time on link building and branding than anything else. I also build links 7 days a week.

I should also point out that I no longer build links by using blog commenting on stand alone blogs. I gave it up for several reasons. The main reason was that because I include SEO in my keyword phrase in the name field where allowed. Spam filters were picking it up. I did a case study that only 43% of my blog comments got approved. However, this is not likely to happen to you if you provide useful relevant comments.

When I blogged for comments for clients the number of accepted comments was usually about 85%. I also have noted that blogs disappear, are abandoned, or went no follow at a high rate. Blog links for myself and my clients disappeared at an alarmingly high rate for me. In the cell phone industry is change of is called churn rate.

Now, having said that, I know many people prefer blog commenting for links. So I figure I would clue you in on how you can improve your link building success rate. You see, I am a big fan of working smarter and not harder.

A successful blog commenting campaign is all about being prepared and setting goals. I recommend that you start by analyze your competition. The easiest way to find relevant linking resources is to see where your competitors got their links. You must and find out who is linking to them. A really good resource is Backlink Watch. All that you need to do is enter your competitors url and hit enter. They will provide you with up to 1,000 backlinks that are going to your competitors. It also may indicate if the link is Do Follow or No Follow.

There are a few other good choices such as Yahoo’s Site Explorer. I just did a search of a professional link builder today that I am very familiar with. Yahoo’s Site Explorer produced 2843  links pointing to her site and Backlink Watch produced around 2700 links. The problem is that each sites allows you to only access to the first 1,000 backlinks. I don’t know  if they are both using the same database or different ones.

The point is that I now have a huge database from where I can begin the process of link building. I am certain that their will be a lot of overlapping links, but that’s ok. If the source is a good source going back a second time is a very good thing. Of course, it works both ways. If the resource is No Follow or no good you will likely have doubled a fruitless effort. Many times you’ll land at a site and never find that sites link and there are no linking opportunities available.

It’s not a perfect solution but it does reveal a whole lot about your competition. Are these links No Follow or Do Follow can easily be ascertained. Then you will want to look for link patterns. Does your competitor have a favorite source that they use like directories or blogs. Maybe them prefer to use forums. In some ways link building is a pathway or trail that has already been blazed by your competition. Their link building history isn’t hidden away in some secret place. You just need to know where and how to look.

I recent have been testing out Raven SEO Tools. They offer a free 30 day trail of the software. Those who are regulars here already know that I am no fan of SEO or related automated tools. I mention this simply because the amount of backlinks information for any site I think tops out at 50,000 per search. So this is a good option for those whose competition has more than 1,000 links. The report can also be downloaded to a CVS file like Excel. Many trail versions never allow you to download anything.

It is much better to start a link building program where you already know links have been obtained than just doing a Google search for Do Follow blogs. What a huge waste of time that one is. Those lists produced by doing a Google search are so very used and abused that they quickly become obsolete. I should know I have used many of them in the past. Blogs that end up on these lists often get sick of all the spammy posts that they switch back to a No Follow status. This problem is only getting worse.

Before you begin a link building program you should set some realistic goals. My personal goal is to acquire 100 links a day. I will not fulfill this goal today, as I have decided that my blog need some more attention. It isn’t important that you meet these goals every day. It is important that you have goals and that you try to fulfill them.

The old saying “if you don’t set goals you will surely never obtain them” is so true. The higher the goal, as long as it is realistic, means that you will be more successful than if you set easily achievable goals. The idea here is that 75% of 100 is much better than 75% of 50. I personally find achieving these daily goals very rewarding.

That was written a while back and I found that since I am no longer using blogs my link building success and daily volumes have dramatically improved. Still unless I was willing to spend lots of time on forums that wasn’t a realistic goal. The obtainable goal is closer to 60 a day.

Even if your goal is only 5 links a day it will have a positive effect over time. Link building, to be most effective needs to become a regular part of your marketing plan. Blogs especially, fold on a regular basis or they get tired of all the spam associated with being Do Follow and they return to No Follow. Those links that you had last year may need replacing this year.

Last year I lost a huge amount of links when Ning recently made profile in their network sites No Follow. That really hurt as I had way too many eggs in my Ning basket. I will have a hard time replacing them before I run my monthly ranking report on the first of November. It will be very interesting to see how much ground that we have lost.

As it turned out thousands of links were lost this way for me. A similar fate befell those who had been using the social media platform Kick Apps. Most sites using this software made all links No Follow. I mainly missed this one as I had chosen Ning as my link machine. The loss of Kick Apps really hit many link builders hard. You could drop links into video and picture description. The bio and other sections also allow links. If that were not enough you it offered bookmarking links as well.

The moral of these platform tails is this. Spread yourself around. Like someone who knows a stock portfolio you need to spread your assets around. It also looks like a more natural link pattern for the search engines.

Now, that you have a huge amount of resources available to you will want to record where you left comments hoping for a link. I would also recommend using a password manager program like RoboForm. This is an especially good option if you have to register on a blog to leave a comment. A better choice is creating a spread sheet or a Word document where you list the exact post where and when you made a comment.

Then you will want to return to these blogs a week or so later to verify if your comment was approved. If your comment was not approved then there is no reason to return to this blog. Simply delete these from your database.

You will also want to pay close attention to see if the blog has a comment policy. If it does, then do take the time to read it. I reject 85 to 90% of all comments left here because the commenter’s failed to pass our comment policy. I even get people commenting on the comment policy post and doing it wrong! If you want to have an effective link building program you absolutely must follow the comment policies. where you find one.

Finding a Comment Policy on this blog is easy on this blog as it appears along side the comment box. That often is not the case on most blogs. Many blogs never bother to write one so what should you do then? I simply observe the comments that are already appearing on the blog if those comments include keywords then it is a good bet that your comment will be approved if you do the same thing. If you only see names it is better to move on as a comment with keyword will not be approved.

It amazes me that all day long people leave comments here and never bother to read the comment policy. They also fail to notice that most comments approved do not include a link. I am a real big fan of doing things that will directly benefit this website. So leaving a comment that isn’t likely to get approved is a big waste of time for me. The difference between leaving a useful comment and a short comment is usually 30 seconds or less. So Why not take the time to leave a useful comment?

Also if you take the Scratch My Back Marketing approach and view comments as an advertisement for your site you will find the benefits very rewarding. It really comes down to do unto others as you would have them do to you! This isn’t pie in the sky stuff here. But it does require a certain level of common sense.

After all  if you have gone through the paces to leave a comment why not take a little longer to do it right and be rewarded? I call that win/win marketing?

What say you?
