Take Your Website Viral Using Video Promotions

This is a guest post.

Not too long ago, any sort of talk about ‘viral’ anything would have made us think about the hospital or some menacing computer threat. Instead, these days if you can create something viral you stand to gain a lot of exposure for your work. That makes it a must, at least as a consideration, for every webmaster that would like to see their site get the kind of traffic we all dream about. It might sound impossible, and to be fair it is certainly a gamble since no one can truly predict what will go viral even if they claim to specialize in doing so. The key point you want to keep in mind is that when you want a video to go viral on your site’s behalf, it really does need to appeal to masses at the level of the ‘lowest common denominator’. In case that sounds derogatory, it certainly is not. The thing is, there are a variety of things that almost all of us can either relate to or be amused by. Have you ever noticed that shows like America’s Funniest Home Videos seem to feature either pets or kids doing silly things or, and this is incredibly popular, people falling. There are probably advanced psychological reasons for these things being so popular as far as viewing material, but the basic truth lies in the fact that they are popular and simply by noticing such a phenomenon, you have an advantage. You can start to think about how you might use different visual elements, themes or concepts that you notice a great deal of people seem to be attracted to.

This is the real deal Web 2.0 marketing strategy and no matter what anyone else tells you, you stand just as much of a chance as creating the next big viral sensation as anyone else does. Especially if you happen to be pondering this and are fired up about getting your site some exposure in the process. Before we dive into the different things you might consider pondering, a note of caution: be sure you have very solid web hosting if you are serious about getting a video truly viral. It may seem obvious, but if you get a video that features your site’s address embedded into it, you are likely to get a ton of traffic and crash a weak server in a matter of minutes, if not seconds. When you really do make that major splash you are not going to want to see millions of people zipping to your site to see 404 File Not Found, are you?

Enough of that that nightmare, though, let’s look at what your options are when it comes to some basic food for thought in viral videos. Here are 3 ideas to take into consideration:

Real People Win Fans – People on YouTube and other video sharing sites tend to like actual human beings over celebrities if you don’t have a high production value. You could take to the camera yourself and speak about your site, especially if it is about an interesting topic. Do you have an opinion on some current event? Make the most of the moment and strike while the iron is hot because if you speak from your heart you might just find out that a lot of people feel the way you do or think a similar thought. This is a good thing and building camaraderie is very intelligent if you really want to have a great site over the long haul. You have a chance to put your best foot forward if you just be yourself and do what you can do. If it fails, you can always take the videos down and try something new. Remember, we are no longer in the era of everyone being totally paranoid about people knowing who they are. We have Google and we can find you no matter how well you want to hide. Just roll with it and work your own angle.

Everyone Loves Pretty Girls – There is a huge amount of truth here. Even girls like pretty girls, have you ever noticed that? If you know someone who is attractive and you yourself are a bit camera shy then this is a very good bet. You can try asking around, too, because for a very small amount of money you can probably get yourself a spokeswoman on craigslist or even at your local college. Put up a flier and see who responds. Of course, you might not want to announce that it’s a beauty contest just in case that might put some girls off. If she’s not the best speaker in the world, you could have her dance to a popular song and then tell YouTube (when they inevitably accuse you of copyright infringement) that your little video is simply an attempt to pay tribute to a song you hope people will want to download. You’ll be surprised at how often this can keep the video live. Play around with the pretty girl concept and you’ll come up with a few ideas of your own, most likely.

Pay a Musician for Once – That’s right, pay a musician because heaven knows they barely get enough to keep ordering pizza most of the time. Why not give them a little bit of money to create a jingle for you? You could ask a local band to cover a song and replace the chorus with something about your site that rhymes with the original words. You could even have them create something original. People love music and if you play your cards right, you can have a hit song on YouTube right away – especially if it’s funny. Go for the gusto and try contacting a semi famous musician over YouTube if you don’t know any in your area. For a nice deposit in their PayPal account, they might just be willing to write you a little tune or maybe let you promote your site with one of their songs and a video slide show. The possibilities here are endless so just trust your creativity to give you the spark you need.

There are 3 quick little ideas to get you started riffing. Once you have your creative juices flowing it won’t be any trouble to come up with more. If at first you don’t succeed, don’t quit trying until you infect the world with the message that they need to visit your website!

Google What’s Up Here

I check my rankings daily and sometimes several times a day. This might seem like overkill, but with Google’s Panda updates things change often. So I was surprised when I encountered these results today.

Google Places Citations SEOHere Google is showing two of my page that rank # 2 and # 3 for the search query, Google Places Citations. What is strange is the snippet being used and how they are being displayed. The snippet used for the # 2 result has nothing to do with that page. It is an excerpt from my blog and it does not appear on that page.

The third result is for a post on my blog. The excerpt is 54 spaces long and it ends using three periods like this… Usually Google does not truncate the snippet like this. It usually does this if the snippets info which is usually the pages page description goes over 160 characters and spaces long. The actual description is 156 spaces long.

This is likely just a quark and since Google is showing two results I don’t mind. Google also includes this line
“+ Show more results from tucsonseosolutions.com.” If you click on this link it opens up the search results to reveal more links to posts and pages on the site that cover Google Places Citations. These are a way cool feature that Google provides to well established sites. That is why it seems odd that this site got that plus feature and SEOmoz did not.

Believe me, I did a happy dance when I saw this. It just leaves me wondering what’s up here!

Update later the same day… This posted shortly after midnight. When I awoke later in the day I searched for Google Places Citations again. This is what I discovered.

This post was ranking # 1 for the Google Places Citations and I was now also ranking # 2. SEOmoz had slipped to the third position. I know this is likely to be a quirk but one that I will enjoy for the moment.

Update 07/31/2011: Just a day later things have changed again for the search query on Google. Today’ this post is no longer being shown in the search results. But this site still holds down the # 1 and # 2 positions just ahead of SEOmoz. The difference is that Google is no showing my Places Citations List post first followed by my Google Places Citations Page… Welcome to my world!

Google Drops Firefox Toolbar

This one has really got me scratching my head. A few weeks ago I updated to Firefox 5 only to find out that Google didn’t have a toolbar ready for this version. I have experienced this previously. So I deleted the new version. However, finding a downloadable version of the old browser was a bit of a challenge. All of my resources only had the latest version. After panicking for a while I located my previous version and downloaded it.

I figured that in a few more weeks Google would have a new toolbar available, but I was wrong. Google will not be updating its toolbar for Firefox. Ouch! This news baffled me as the two have been my internet tool of choice for the last six years.

Since Google’s Chrome browser does not have a toolbar that leaves only Microsoft IE with a current toolbar. This blows me and a lot of others away. Google has used its toolbar to gather a wide variety of user information over the years. Now, they are leaving this data behind.

For us SEO types that means no more Page Rank report. This is a definite negative from my perspective. I ques I will have really on SEOQuake for this info. How they are going to handle web history is a mystery to me.

Another Google Service Goes Away

I seem to be saying this a lot lately. It seems for every new company that Google acquires that they fold another service. This time I am announcing that the Google Directory is history.

Google Places SEO Citations BlogI really liked this directory that no one ever used. At one time I ranked # 1 for 8 SEO related searches on the site. So of course. I really like this tool that almost no one ever used. There have been lots of changes since Mr. Page took control.

Google+ My Thoughts

Google+ My Thoughts

The truth is that I missed this boat. I usually like to let others try new Google products before I give them a try. But that has not worked out as now Google is not accepting any new users for Google+. Then today, I discovered that Google+ business pages have been removed. Apparently it was just some test marketing going on here.

Wow, can you imagine that? What if you had spent many hours over many days working on your network to find that it had vanished. I wonder how many businesses missed that it was not a permanent offering. So for me this all worked out kinda of. I still feel like I am losing out to all of my competitors as they build out their networks. I check the site daily to see if they are accepting new accounts to no avail.

On the upside of things Google purchased a company called the Fridge to help them develop Google+ more quickly.
