You May Be Ranking Better In The Google Search Results Than You Think

January 14, 2010

This post was originally created back in the spring of 2009. I had driven up to Phoenix to attend an SEO Meet-up group. The topic was “What are some of your favorite internet marketing resources.”  During the discussion it was mentioned that Google results may very. I found the information shared in this post so important that I have shared it on several hundred social media websites. Today, I have added another update about a real life version of this story.

The original version was titled ‘You May Not Be Ranking As Well In The Google Results As You Think.” What I discovered is that most people will be ranking higher than they think. I will explain.

If you are a website owner with an interest in internet marketing you may be getting inaccurate Google search results. Google changed how it delivers its search results a few years back. They call this personalized search and it works when you are logged into a Google account.

Here is what is occurring with personalized searches. If you are like many marketers and website owners you may be a little bit obsessed with how well that your website or sites are ranking in the Google results. This obsession likely causes you to check your search results daily or multiple times each day. This constant checking isn’t a bad thing in and off itself. However, if you start clicking onto any of the websites listed in the results it will alter what you are seeing in its results pages in the future.

The results that you are getting may be false and may not be what others are seeing when they use Google. When you are in one of your Google accounts it records your reactions to its results. Whatever sites that you click on are recorder as a vote of sorts for that website. So if you are click on your website or your competition it eventually will alter the results that Google provides but only to your account.

If you have a habit on clicking onto your own site or the competition when searching from a Google account it will definitely alters the search results that are provided to your account. I was reminded of this fact today. I was checking to see where we were ranking for the search Arizona SEO. We had been ranking in the 10th position. Today, when I checked the results had us at # 1. My first reaction was wow, that a big jump. Then I glanced up to notice that I was in a Google account. As soon as I logged out the results went back to the # 10 position. This is what I had accepted to see.

This can go the other way as well. If you have a habit of clicking on your competitor’s sites while searching it will eventually start ranking them higher than they actually appear to the general public. This is where most of the general public will run into problems with personalized results. They are so used to checking on the competition and this eventually pushes there site down in the search rankings that they are viewing in their Google account.

This also unfortunately offers unscrupulous SEO providers a tool to manipulate potential clients so do beware of this. If some one is providing a demonstration of how well they rank or their clients rank check to see if they are logged into a Google account. So do ask them to show you their results from outside a Google account. The differences can be amazing. Don’t accept no for an answer here. This really is that important.

Just another thing I though that you could use. It is the little things that we have to be aware of that can make a huge difference.

The Update: 01/14/2009

A few weeks back I had a conversation with a potential client. This mans website covered a very niche keyword phrase related to a specific educational program. He stated that even though there was almost no competition for his market that his site was buried on page two of the SERP’s. This is a very common experience for many and that why they call for my assistance.

However, when I searched for his website I discovered that his site was sitting in the fifth position on the first page of the Google search results. The difference here is that he had been using his account to search for his keyword phrase. Then he clicked onto his competitors sites. The result was that these sites improved in his results and his website declined in the rankings. This insight saved him $650.00 as he would not be requiring link building training and a detail website review. He decided that it was OK with being in the 5th position.

I very easily could have kept quiet and accepted this mans business. Then without doing anything I could have showed improved results but I don’t operate that way. Unfortunately, in these tough economic times some will succumb to this temptation.  It really does pay to be cautious when buying internet services. Way too many people are willing to do anything and to tell you anything to make a buck.

The lesson here is to go straight to Google to do your keyword rankings searches. This will give you better and more accurate search results

Is Google Putting Your Family Or Home Based Business At Risk

October 31, 2009

If you are a small home based business you may have never heard of Google’s Place Pages. Google Place Pages are part of Google Maps or what Google calls the Local Business Center (LBC.) Recent changes to these pages may be putting you and your family unnecessarily at risk.

Google’s LBC is more commonly known as the Google Maps. It allows local businesses to place a free listing in its maps. These maps are often included with Google’s searches that are local in nature. You don’t even need to have a website to list your business with local maps listings.

However, these listing may place you and your family at risk. When you click on a business that is listed in Google’s maps you are taken to what is called a Place Page. These pages provide more detailed information about a company. These pages also include such things as reviews, direction to your business, and more. Recently, Google has begun including a street view of your businesses location. This is great for a retail location. However, if you run your business from your home it may be placing you and your family at risk if you are using your homes address.

Do you really want a picture of your home in your business listing? That picture will show whatever was in front of your home when a Google van took a picture. That may include your kids, toys, or your personal vehicles. The problem is Google does not seem to offer a business opt out of street views of businesses. I have scoured the Help Forum to no avail. My inquiries have gone unanswered.

Here’s is how I know that you may be at risk if you are using your home address in Local maps. Our business is a home based and when I first listed the business with Google I used my exact home address. When you first sign up with Google’s Local Business Center it sends you a post card. That post card has your pin number for your account verification. That is why I originally used my home address. Then I basically overlooked changing the address.

Then, a few months later I had a business appointment with what turned out to be a very strange man. Since I work out of my home I usually meet clients at a local coffee shop (not Starbucks.) At this meeting I was glad that I was using this coffee shop. This guy really was a very scary character. He is the kind that I would not have ever invited to my home or would want to business with.

During the conversation I mentioned that I meet at coffee shops for safety reasons. The very scary man informed me that he knew where I lived because my address was listed in Google maps. Quickly, I was making a mental note to change my address. I thought that I would never want these man just showing up at my front door. That’s when he told me that he drove to my house. He said “I pulled up in front of your house, and then I decided that it was not a good idea, I left and called instead.” Yea, I thought.

This was an almost mess in your pants moment for me. This guy was huge, disheveled, and he appeared to be a ticking time bomb to me. He claimed to have the next greatest idea that would put Google out of business and he wanted to run his business proposal by me. I had time on my hands and that it wouldn’t hurt to give this guy an hour of my time. I thought what if… Well, his proposal had already been duplicated thousands of times over and his was being poorly executed.

He thought so much of his great idea that he had me sign a non-disclosure agreement. Eventually he showed me his website and did his presentation. Then he tries to close me. He was looking for financial partners. I went to great lengths to explain why I thought that his business model would not work. I further explained that even if he could make it work that the site would need to be professionally built and he would need huge amounts of money to promote it.

What he was trying to accomplish was to be a cross between Craigslist and YouTube. However, his business model was built upon selling classifieds ads which are free all over the internet. I very carefully explained that I wanted nothing to do with his business concept. I further explained that I thought that he would likely fail. I thought the guy was going to pounce on me and perhaps do great bodily harm to me. Yes, the guy was that scary. He informed me that I was the only person who ever told him no. This guy was huge and I could understand why someone would want to shine him on.

Now, I had to be as gracious as possible because this guy knows where I live. The first thing that I did upon arriving home was to change my business address in Google’s Local Business Center. I made up a number but used the same street address. I hoped and prayed that this guy would not go off someday and come looking for me.

I got a second reality check when I recently checked my Local Business Center listing a few days ago. That’s when I discovered Google was now placing a street view picture of the address that I supplied with our LBC listing on our place page. It was not a very big deal for me as it was not my residence that Google was showing because I changed my address, but it could have been. It truly can be a crazy world out there on the internet we must be careful, especially if you have a home based business and a family.

If you are a home based business do you really want a picture of your home in your Google local listing? Depending when Google took a photo of your home it may also include you, your family members, or your personal vehicles. I have not been able to find out where or how to remove this picture. In fact, I can’t get any answers from Google about its local maps. They offer a help forum but this has been of very little help. If I find a solution I will let you all know. I have made an inquiry today, but none of my other inquiries have been answered by A Google employee. That inquiry was made three days ago. I held off posting then until I gave Google an opportunity to respond but they have not.

There is a lot of frustration with the lack of customer support with Google in general and more specifically in the Local Business Center department. I have been trying to get an answer for why a clients listing was flagged for several weeks now. Google is Beta testing a new ad program associated with its Local Maps and doesn’t seem to be offering any customer support at this time. Those of us who are regularly involved with Local SEO and Local Maps have never been thrilled with the support, or the lack thereof, that Google offers.

I would suggest that you seriously consider changing your address if you have been using your home address. Do you really want photo of your home appearing in your business listing? I know I have one really huge reason not to have my home appearing! I can only hope that others notice this and start asking Google to change this and allow home based businesses to opt out pf having pictures of their homes appearing in its local maps. Now, you will need to check your businesses place page to see if your home is appearing on this page. I checked some listing of other home based businesses that I know off. About two thirds of the listing that I checked has a street view photo in their listing. While yours may not have a street view now, it likely will in the near future.

Has Google Been Caught Going Against Net Neutrality?

December 16, 2008

Has Google Been Caught Going Against Net Neutrality?

The Wall Street Journal reported today that Google appears to be abandoning their net neutrality position. Cnet also reported on this subject and offered Google’s response. The WSJ noted that Google has been a long time supporter of a neutral playing field for all internet traffic. What this means is that all users are treated to open access to the internet traffic. It is meant to treat all traffic as equal and to give no advantage in any particular type of traffic.

This is a throwback to the early days of telephone service. All calls were to be treated equal. So a phone company could not pick and choose which calls it put through. However, with the advent of peer to peer file swapping, TV over the internet, and video services the internet has been increasingly more crowded.

Service providers such as cable and the traditional phone companies have had a difficult time managing the surges in traffic volume. They have been seeking permission from the FCC to change the rules on how they handle service. They want to charge more to provide better service.

A few years ago Yahoo, MSN, and Google joined with others to fight against controlled internet access. However, Yahoo and MSN quietly abandoned their support of net neutrality. It was pointed out that Yahoo has entered into an arrangement to offer DSL for AT&T. It was also noted that Microsoft has entered an agreement with Verizon to supply services for its TV over the internet offerings.

It should be noted that in early 2008 Google noted “Some major broadband service providers have threatened to act as gatekeepers, playing favorites with particular applications or content providers, demonstrating that this threat is all too real.” We must now ask has their position changed?

Google responded that the WSJ had misunderstood its potential involvement with internet service providers. It noted that it is considering bringing its data centers into the networks of existing internet service providers. It noted that it would increase speed for its internet services to the end user. It didn’t focus on what a huge advantage this would be for them.

Google also explained that it would not be entering into binding agreements. It also went on to explain that anyone could do the same if they wanted too. This sounded bogus to me and it seemed to ring hallow with the writer at cnet.

We Rock The Google Directory With 6 # 1’s WOW

December 15, 2008

This is a feature that we are implementing with each post. It is here because we provide small business SEO solutions all across Arizona. We Rock The Google Directory with 6 # 1’s

Please excuse me while I do some boasting, but first this:

I am so anti directory submissions that I forgot that Google has its own directory. Membership is free but it requires that you first be accepted into the DMOZ directory. You seldom read anything about this directory, and so little is written that I forgot that it existed. Then I saw a thread on a forum that mentioned the directory.

So I Goggled it and started doing some searches. The obvious first search was for me was SEO and we could not be found on the first 5 pages so I gave up on this search. Then I tried using other SEO related searches that we use and do well in the standard index. The results were mind boggling. Six of the seven searches that were used all included SEO in the keyword phrase this site ranked number one. Here is how we fared.

SEO Solutions #1

Local SEO #1

Local SEO Solutions #1

Niche SEO #1

Small Business SEO Solutions #1

Geo-targeted SEO #1

Geo-targeting SEO # 2

Wow, I thought this is crazy good luck to rank so high across so many searches. The worst we did outside of just SEO was #2. This euphoria quickly surrendered to reality. You see I check Google Analytic’s almost daily and never has this site had a visitor from Google’s directory. None, not one visitor has visited here from Google’s directory. Even this coveted directory is useless for generating website traffic.

So while many covet a listing here, it hasn’t generated any traffic. Though it does make for an interesting blog post and was worth some bragging rights.

Google Provides New Search Volume Insights

December 13, 2008

This is a feature that we are implementing with each post. It is here because we provide small business SEO solutions all across Arizona. At this time we would like to thank our friends and clients for their support. Google Provides New Search Volume Insights

Google has created lots of great tools to improve website performance and results. They are now offering a nice tool called Insights. It allows the user to enter a keyword and receive detailed search volume information. The really cool thing is that it allows the user set specific parameters on the dates and regions to be queried.

The results reflect a 30 day search volume based on how you have defined your search. If your search included the United States, your results would also include a break down by state. It includes color coded maps. This was a impressive touch.

Because the tool is still in Beta testing its results appear to be currently limited to one word searches. It could produce results for the search query, SEO, but could not produce anything for local SEO. Over time it is reasonable to expect that the data base will expand beyond one word searches.

As an Arizona resident who practices SEO, I was pleased to learn that Arizona ranked fourth in the volume of searches looking for SEO. This tool is worth exploring; even in Beta testing it truly does offer some useful insights.

Organic Search Results Are Our Speciality!

November 28, 2008

We specialize in organic search results for local and niche product or service websites. We are not interested in working on large e-commerce sites, nor do we offer Pay Per Click management. In fact, we are the anti-PPC SEO Company. Our goal is to achieve the highest possible natural search engine results across multiple keyword phrase searches.

SEO is all a numbers game and we only work where the numbers are in our favor. Think of it this way, let’s say your websites sells blue widgets. You might be competing with thousands of other sites to get the search engines attention. However, if your website features blue widgets in Tucson, or Arizona, the numbers become very favorable for obtaining high search rankings. You are now likely to have only a dozen or so competitors per geographic region. The website site that optimizes locally goes to the first page of results and quickly. It’s all about the numbers and we play where the numbers are in our clients favor.

We invite you to join the conversation and leave a comment. We also invite you to continue the conversation on your blog or perhaps use a trackback, or maybe even social bookmark this article, give it a Digg or Stumble it.

Can Google’s Search Results Be Trusted?

November 14, 2008

We just did a search Google search for “niche SEO’ where we are usually in the number # 1 or #2 position bouncing back and forth with Aaron Wall’s seobook website. To our surprise another website www.seosearchbot.com was in the #1 position. So we visited the site.

The website lacked content and was easy to read, as it is one of those link directories. We used the Ctrl F command and discovered that the word niche didn’t appear on the page.

We then ventured to check out the pages source code. We did another Ctrl F search and again we came up with no results. So why did this website appear in the search results? Does anyone have a reasonable explanation?

Well, before this even got posted the site dropped to the #4 position. I just don’t know how it ever ranked for niche SEO when the word niche never appears!

We will continue to investigate and keep you updated.

We invite you to join the conversation and leave a comment. We also invite you to continue the conversation on your blog or perhaps use a trackback, or maybe even social bookmark this article, give it a Digg or Stumble it.

Google’s “Do No Evil” Some Say It’s Just Not So

November 9, 2008

Google is famous for it’s “Do No Evil” approach to doing business. However, many of its biggest advertisers are disputing this position. The Wall Street Journal recently reported on Google and its struggle with trademark infringement in it paid ad placements. Google currently allows trademarks and copy written materials to be used in its AdSense and Ad Words pay per click advertising

One of Google largest advertisers, American Airlines filed suit last August in a Texas federal court. They are claiming trademark infringement. The suit requests that Google stop selling trade mark protected keywords.

A Google spokesperson replied that lower court decisions have supported Google concerning these matters. This matter is not limited to just American Airlines other large corporations such as Marriott Hotels and Northwest airlines have voiced opposition to the position taken by Google.

Several months ago it was pointed out to me during a business discussion that I was vulnerable to the same situation. At that time I scoffed at the notion that this could happen to our business. I stated as a local SEO service provider my market wasn’t likely to be targeted. I also replied “there isn’t much that I could do anyway; I couldn’t afford to sue Google.”

Now, that we are expanding our business presence to a national audience we have found that our position has matured on this subject. While we still can not afford to fight the search engines in courts we find that we do support American Airlines on this trademark issue.

Why shouldn’t trademark laws be enforceable on the Internet? The WJS pointed out several examples of trademarks being used as a bait and switch. This problem is often called “piggybacking” where a trademarked business name is used to lure visitors to another unrelated site.

Google is rumored to punish websites that use these kinds of methods in their organic search results. It is believed your website might actually be penalized by linking with unrelated sites, or the link is considered useless. But they are doing little to stop this practice in the money producing portion of their results. American Airlines thinks its illegal.

Now, don’t get me wrong we are big fans of Google. However, it does seem that this trademark issue is tarnishing their “Do No Evil” mantra. What do you think?

We invite you to join the conversation and leave a comment. We also invite you to continue the conversation on your blog or perhaps use a trackback, or maybe even social bookmark this article, give it a Digg or Stumble it.
