Targeting the right keywords

This is another guest post if you would like to be considered for guest posting please contact me though our contact page.

Great Search Engine Optimization (SEO) isn’t all about getting thousands of additional extra visitors to your website. The best SEO experts know that it’s really all about delivering results. That means helping you to make more sales. It’s about helping your business to be more profitable.

With this in mind, you always need to be wary of search engine analysts who suggest that they could quickly get you to the top of Google’s rankings for a particular phrase. The reality may be that they can only make quick progress because they are targeting a phrase that doesn’t appeal to your competitors.

There may be good reasons for this. Your competitors may well have looked at this particular phrase and decided that very few people search for it, or that those who do are unlikely to make a purchase.

In other words, your competitors may have carried out some good quality keyword research.

Keyword research basics

If you’ve not carried out similar research then you could be at a competitive disadvantage. You may be missing out on potential customers. Instead, there’s a good chance that your SEO efforts are concentrating on keywords and phrases that don’t attract customers. This is a waste of time, effort and money.

Keyword research is not difficult to carry out. Indeed, the Google keyword tool is easily accessible. You can use it to see how many people are searching for particular phrases within your industry. It provides an excellent starting point.

But you’ll know your industry better than anyone else. You’ll understand what your customers are looking for. So you’ll be in a great position to carry out further analysis.

Analyzing your site

Hopefully you’re already using an Analytics package on your website. If not, then you really should be!

It’s amazing how much you can discover by looking at the figures that are produced by such packages.

You can use the information to your advantage. Take a look at your best-selling products, for example. Now refer back to the initial piece of keyword research that you’ve already carried out. Are there some phrases that are related to your key products? Are you currently ranking well for those phrases in the main search engines?

If not, then you have just identified some opportunities. You’ve spotted some keywords that you would like to rank for. You know that you could make money if you could get visitors who are searching for those phrases.

Guiding your optimization approach

This is a really good example of how keyword research and analysis are absolutely fundamental to good SEO.

You don’t want to be wasting your time targeting keywords and phrases that simply don’t produce sales for your business. Instead, you can use simple tools to identify the keywords that you really do need to be targeting.

As you can see, this is a focused approach to optimizing your site. You’re not just trying to get ranked for as many keywords as possible. Your aim is, instead, to rank well for the right keywords. You’re specifically targeting the keywords that will make you money.

Editor note: This is true if you are not targeting using a local identifier. However, if you have a local website the process is often very easy! Also I do not use Google’s keyword tool.

Why are Keywords so Important to Website Promotion?

Why are Keywords so Important to Website Promotion?

This is a guest post.

The keywords that you choose to promote your website with, will determine the success of your marketing strategy. It is very important to use proven guidelines when you decide on the best keywords to use for your website. Let us first have a look at why keywords are so important.

Keywords are important because:

  • If you target the wrong keywords, you will waste a lot of time and money.
  • People use keywords in their search queries when looking for information.
  • The majority of Internet users scan information and only take a closer look when they see the keywords that they are interested in.
  • Web surfers use general keywords for browsing and to find information, more specific keywords for comparing products or services and very specific keywords to find the best offer in order to make a purchase.
  • People will click on advertisements that contain keywords that they are interested in.
  • Keywords provide potential customers with an idea of what you are selling.
  • Internet users search for information using general terms and not industry related terminology.
  • Not all keywords generate high search volumes.
  • The more specific your keywords are, the higher your success ratio will be (you will receive more targeted traffic).

It should be clear from the points mentioned above that the keywords that you decide on will have a major impact on your sales and website traffic. Let us have a look at some keyword guidelines.

Guidelines to follow:

  • Conduct proper keyword research by making use of trusted software to find keyword suggestions for your website (Google Keyword Tool).
  • Determine the number of average monthly searches and level of competition for each keyword.
  • Decide on the keywords that you want to target and rank them according to importance (number of searches, level of competition).
  • Make use of multiple word keywords that can accurately describe your website.
  • Your keywords should be used throughout the content of your web page.
  • Use your main keywords in the page title, domain name, meta tags, headings and internal links of each page.
  • Place your target keywords in the anchor text of the links to your site that you build from other websites.
  • Use your keywords in the articles and blog posts that you write.
  • Keywords should be used in any advertisement for your website (classifieds or paid advertising).
  • Monitor the performance of your chosen keywords on the search result pages.
  • Use Google Analytics to monitor the number of visitors to your website, the source and the keywords that they use.
  • Change your keywords if they are not effective.

Effective keyword search optimization is the foundation of any successful website. If Internet users can find you through the keywords that you have decided on, and if these keywords are specific enough to generate targeted traffic, you will be successful.

Urban – Thanks Heinrich for the great work. I wanted to point out that I do keyword research manually I do not trust automated tools for this task. This task is made much easier for me as I work with local websites that are already in existence and little keyword research is required.

How geo-targeting works and how the initial data is gathered

Welcome to the Niche Internet Marketing Website Services blog at Tucson SEO Solutions.

How Geo-targeting Works And How The Initial Data Is Gathered

This has been a guest post by Evan Jacobswho is a professional software developer working in the affiliate marketing industry. He has worked extensively in the area of geo-targeting technologies used to increase conversion rates for clients around the world.

Websites use geo-targeting to display content and offers that are relevant to the user. It makes no sense to display an offer in Ohio if it is only available in California. A user from Florida would have little use for a heavy duty snow blower. Delivering content that is relevant to the user, no matter where they are, is very useful.

For a lot of website owners, geo-targeting is kind of a mystery. For one, it is hard to test if you have it setup correctly without physically changing locations. Geo-targeting is, however, fairly simple to get going. In this article I will describe how geo-targeting works, how to use it with your site, how it can help with SEO, and common mistakes a lot of people make when using it.

How geo-targeting works and how the initial data is gathered

Geo-targeting works by querying a database with known IP blocks, whichever block your IP falls in will have some type of physical location associated with it. The process of looking up your IP to find this data is quick and simple. The process of cataloguing all this data into a database is a bit more involved.

Here’s how it usually works: A popular website requires a user to register and fill out their city, country, and/or state. Once they register, their IP is recorded in the a database. With enough users, you can cross reference the data to determine which IP blocks are where. Here’s an example: if 10 users from the same IP block claim they are from Atlanta, Georgia, and 1 user from that same IP block listed Syracuse, New York, then the we can safely bet that IP block belongs to Atlanta, Georgia. The Syracuse user is an outlier because the data they supplied is not consistent with the rest of the users.

Further consider that as a user continues to login to the website, the website can continue to log which IP address they are logging in from. One day the user logs in from home, another day they login at school, etc. The more places they login from, the more data we collect about the physical location of the IPs. After a while of gathering data we become more and more certain about the known location of IP blocks. This geo data is then combined with and compared to other sources. This is how most of the existing Geo-targeting databases come about.

How geo-targeting affects SEO

Google and other search engines are constantly trying to deliver relevant content to their users. Google, for instance, has discovered that around ¼ of queries are local in nature. This is important because it means that one quarter of people are looking for something in a specific area. If a user does a query for “Party supplies,” they probably don’t want to drive across the country to get it.

Google will most likely crawl your website from their headquarters in Mountain View, CA. If you display the geo-targeted location then this will be indexed as the location from wherever the crawler is located. However, Google has datacenters and crawlers based all over the world. Google.co.uk will be looking for websites more relevant to UK audiences as well as all the other localized versions of the search engine. If you localize the website for that geographic location then that audience will be more receptive. If you are actively seeking users from specific countries, forward those users to a localized version of your website. Use local addresses and terminology and Google will treat your website as local when users search for it from their home country.

How to use geo-targeting on your website

Luckily there are several very good geo-targeting products out there. Some companies release free databases while others charge for more accurate lists and/or more features. Here is a comparison matrix with a rough.

Database Cost Accuracy Script Included Notes
MaxMind $370 High Yes
Lambda Geo-target $20 High Yes
Hostip Free Med No Database only
Ipinfodb Free Low No Database only
Google Free Low Yes Javascript only

With Javascript versions you face a dilemma, you must wait until the script responds with the data. If the service is slow or unresponsive, then the user may see a blank area where the geo-targeted information should be.

Common mistakes with geo-targeting

-          Make sure that the geo-targeted data is actually found, otherwise the user may get confused when they see a blank area where a city or country should be.

-          Take the entire website into consideration when localizing for a particular area or country. Be aware of localized spelling and terminology. Remember to change currencies to the local denominations.

-          If you are trying to convince a reader you are local, do not just list whatever the detected city may be. Display a major city that is nearby so that it is more believable. One good script for this is Lambda Geo-target, where you can find the closest city of a specified population. You can also come up with your own solution using the latitude and longitude of the detected city.

-          In many countries aside from the US they use only city and country whereas in the US it is usually city and state. Your reader will most likely not believe you are local to them if you incorrectly display the location.

Now you have a little background information on geo-targeting and how it works. If you follow everything outlined in this post, you are well on your way to increasing conversions and CTR. Good luck!

My view:
From my viewpoint Geo-targeting SEO is way more than simply using GIS technology on a website as it has been described here. When I geo-target a website I am targeting for specific geographic location  and for products or services. Geo-targeted SEO is usually applied for the small local business that usually has 20 or fewer pages. These sites are not candidates for GIS technologies.

While the end goal may be the same, delivering the right content that specifically targets a geographic area, our approaches are extremely different. And they are often confused by the general public. When I geo-target a website for carpet cleaning in Tucson that is the only thing that page will ever target. That information will never appear if you search from any other location.

Whereas, GIS offers up information by IP addresses. Depending on how the website has been developed the information may be the same from city to city or it may not be. GIS is usually used on information and referral websites. Geo-targeted SEO is area specific.

Great article, thanks!

Targeting Your SEO – Keyword Research Methods and Tips

Welcome to the Niche Internet Marketing Website Services Blog at Tucson SEO Solutions.

Targeting your SEO – Keyword Research Methods and Tips

It is not possible to implement a successful SEO strategy without first finding the best keywords and search phrases to target. When you research your market’s keyword demand not only do you learn which phrases to target with your SEO, you also learn a lot about your customers.

Keyword research will provide you with intelligence on market demand and will also allow you to provide a service or product that internet users are already searching for. When you know what people are looking for and the search phrases that they use to find these products or services, you can plan and implement an effective SEO strategy and position yourself perfectly.

In this article we will be taking a closer look at keyword research and how to choose the best keywords for your SEO campaign. With the information that you obtain from your keyword research you will be able to determine the potential value of the search traffic that can be generated by your chosen keywords and this will allow you to decide on a SEO budget.

Keyword Research – Where to Start:

  • Make a list of search phrases or words that describe your market
  • Use phrases consisting of 2 – 5 words
  • Research the demand, popularity and competition for each keyword or phrase on your list
  • Use Google AdWords Keyword Tool or Wordtracker’s Free Basic Keyword Demand Tool to research your words.
  • Trim your list down to the 20 keywords with the highest number of monthly searches and lowest number of competitors

How to Determine the Potential Value of a Search Phrase:

  • Buy a campaign for the chosen keyword on Google AdWords
  • Choose “exact match” and point the traffic to the most relevant web page on your site
  • Track the impressions and conversions for at least 200 clicks
  • If the keyword generated 1000 impressions over a 24 hour period and 50 visitors came to your site with 5 visitors converting to a profit (not revenue) of $100, then a single visitor for that keyword is worth $2.
  • The 1000 impressions in 24 hours should generate a click-thru rate of 30%-40% for the #1 ranking website on the organic search results for that keyword.
  • This will result in 300-400 visits per day valued at $2 per visitor.
  • In this example the keyword would potentially be worth $600-$800 dollars per day.

Choosing the Best keywords for your SEO Campaign:

  • Is the keyword relevant to what your website offers?
  • Will visitors using this search term to find your site, find what they are searching for?
  • Will the traffic resulting from this search term convert into sales?
  • Search for the term in the major search engines. If there are search advertisements along the top and right-hand side of the organic results, this phrase is valuable and is a good keyword for conversions.
  • How difficult will it be to reach the top 10 results? If the top 10 spots are occupied by strong and established competitors you might have to work hard for months before your website will feature in the top results.

Keyword research is extremely important to your website SEO and the benefits are numerous. If you take the time to conduct proper keyword research you will be able to target search phrases that can convert into sales. Successful and profitable keyword optimization and SEO campaigns need to be focused on keywords with a high return on investment. The time and money that you invest in a search engine marketing campaign must be weighed against any returns generated from the campaign.
