A Twitter Test That Failed

I did a little experimental promotion of sorts on Twitter this week. The goal was to add # tags (hash tags) to all of my posts if possible in an effort to gain more followers. When you use this hash mark “#localseo” your tweets will also appear in a timeline for that follows local SEO Armed with this knowledge I set up creating a variety of hash tags of various lengths. I then stored this information in a Word document for easy retrieval.

I figured that being prepared would save me valuable time. I would not have to slow down and think about what tags to use with any tweet. If Twitter showed 36 characters at the end of my tweet I would then see what I had in my list hat was 36 characters or less and then it was a simple copy, paste, and click. I am always looking to save time through working smarter and this seemed like a great solution.

However, this experiment didn’t go as I had projected that it would. My Tweeting stayed about the same from one week to the next the only differences is that most tweets included 2 or more hash tags. The bottom line is that I actually lost one follower in the process. Going the wrong direction as far as followers goes was not what I had expected.

In the beginning of the week I added about 15 new followers but that dwindled to a net loss of one. I wondered if all of those hash tags could become a distraction. Maybe yes, or maybe no either way I thought that this just make work to increase followers.

And this is what I hope you take away from this. Don’t be afraid to try something a little different . And if you do make sure that you have any easy way to asses the ROI (Return On Investment – think time here.) In this case because I prepared by creating a list of hash tags of various lengths my little experiment didn’t add much to an existing chore. Finally, you should remember that execution is everything. It’s all about planning, executing, and evaluating.

I am the kind of person who also enjoy this kind of things. I am always challenging SEO and social media techniques to determine their value. I am a fan of good old research. In this situation, I had wrongly assumed that have my tweets appear in multiple locations was a good thing. I figured it was like having a few more followers.

Finding Twitter Useful I Am A Convert!

I original tested Twitter for 3 months and then I stopped using it. I based my decision on a 100% bounce rate. What I mean is that every Twitter user that ever visited my blog looked around and then left. This isn’t the kind of traffic that I am looking for.

The problem was that I was not using Twitter effectively. I thought that I would give it another try as I wanted to use it to promote a new marketing program. So I figured that I should give it another try.

I started by focusing on mostly Tucson businesses. That didn’t work very well as most of the people that I followed had given up on Twitter. So I figured that I would focus on SEO players. I figured that I would use Twitter as a feed reader of sorts.

This actually has been very productive for me. It brings fresh useful information about my industry front and center. I also started following anything Google. This was a great idea. It allow me access to information on the cutting edge. This is one of my better ideas this year.

I have been doing this for about a month and it has already lead to a half dozen or so blog posts. In the past I would literally Stumble upon information. Usually, it was weeks old or worse. Now, my posts can be more relevant. It also helps on the days when I can’t think of anything to write about. Since I started doing this I have published a post everyday this month. This will eventually help in the search rankings.

Then I hit a plateau of 200 followers. I would gain 5 and then I would lose five. I think I was overloading some followers with the same information. I have about 50 accounts connected to Twitter. When I am link building I might post the same video on several sites in the same day. These would produce the same updates and I know that gets old quickly.

This really can be a problem when I am uploading videos. The same video can easily get Tweeted a dozen or so times in a day. If your follower doesn’t follow many active users then my updates may be all that they are seeing. I know I experienced with other heavy posters and I stopped following them.

What seems to be bringing more followers is my heavy use of YouTube. I am targeted Local SEO and Internet Marketers there. In turn some of those that I have friended are now following me on Twitter.

I have also found Twitter to be very useful in keeping up with local activities here in Tucson. I am following several deals and activities sites that target Tucson. This has not only been useful but it has saved me money as well.

The one thing that I look out for is those that share what they had for lunch. As soon as I see a Tweet like that I remove these people. This also is what turns off a lot of people and I am one of them.

This morning my Twitter account was apparently placed into some automated system. I got about 150 new followers in about an hour. It is now several hours later and some of these new followers are already gone! This is the first time I have seen this on Twitter.

Where I really believe that Twitter will be useful is by using the Connections feature. When I tweet on Twitter it now updates another 51 sites. Many of these sites change that no follow link to a do follow link. So when I tweet a blog post I automatically am acquiring a few dozen back links to my blog. Is that cool or what!

About a month has passed since I wrote this article and I thought that I would update it. I went through about two weeks where I was getting about 100 new followers a day, but they would be mostly gone within 12 hours or so. I have never heard of this happening to others. So if you have seen this please let me know. It appeared that these folks were all into affiliate marketing. Very strange.

I have become a very big fan of the Who do follow suggestions. Most of these people I have never heard of before, but just enough useful ones are suggested to make things interesting. My followers have grown to around 320 and I follow about 190 people and businesses.

As I mentioned earlier I have been using Twitter as a feed reader. Things got really interesting the day Facebook went down. The Tweets were flying that day. But more importantly I have discovered a huge volume of information related to my business that makes me a better SEO!

A Tucson SEO First

As strange as it may seem I posted my first video on another website… Yea! The downside of this event is that I have yet to figure out how to embed a video on this blog. When I do it will be posted here.

I have been in business over three years and I have finally taken on the video challenge. I tried several times tonight to load a video and I will be calling it a day. I will surely try again tomorrow.

The reason that I have avoided using video is that I really am not a big fan of videos. I have probably watched fewer than 10 videos all the way through that were purely for entertainment. I also am not much of a movie fan either.

I am guilty of having a short attention span. That is also likely why I don’t mind link building. I can go to a site added some content or a comment or two and I am onto the next site. I am also a bit of a workaholic. I have to force myself to slow down and smell the roses that I tend in my garden.

Considering that I have never used video marketing to promote my business I believe that I have done very well without using them. So I am very excited at the potential that video presents.

Well, as you can see there is no video. It was over 14 minutes in length and You Tube only allows for up to 10 minutes for videos. I did not know this. Oh, well it was a test video and not a very good one, but at least I figured out the process.

As I am working on my video database I have become a bit surprised by how much time this project is taking. I wanted to come up with a list of about 100 video sites that allow self promoting in the SEO field. After visiting about 500 sites I have only found about 65 useful sites that meet my needs.

This has been a huge learning curve for me as I was never a fan of video sites. First, I have to learn how to make good videos. Then I must locate sources where I can post them. I need to learn a Google video algorithm. Finally, I need to learn how to promote them. This all takes a lot of time. Actually, its like being a student who is taking a self paced class or classes. I find this all very interesting but time consuming!

Can You Meet Or Exceed Our Google Search Results June 2010

Over the last month I have made it a point to visit every website where I have a record of having registered. The main focus was to clean up my links. I have closed many websites this year and I needed to recover these links where possible. This links then were changed and directed to another web page on my site.

During this process I paid close attention to the 10 specific cities that I target all across Arizona. Many of these cities I was only targeting SEO. I expanded that to focus on Local SEO and Local Internet – Website Marketing Services.

These efforts have paid off in a huge way. Many of these keyword phrases simply reversed a targeted phrase Tucson SEO would become SEO Tucson. Internet Marketing Service then became Internet Marketing Services.

I do this because these small difference do have an impact on how well you rank and how well that phrase elicits a click through response. I know from experience that those who reached my website by clicking on SEO Tucson do several things. They stay longer and they visit more pages than those who used Tucson SEO. Also by adding an ‘s” I can sometimes jump from the # 7 position to the # 1 position.

Since my job is SEO I want and seek out every opportunity to rank well. Even thought the site ranks for 178 keyword phrases visitors found my website using 687 keyword phrases. So there are many more opportunities available.

Yes, many if not most of these searches are not very competitive and that’s ok with me. I like to the top dog across many different keyword phrases. In fact I rank # 1 for 121 keyword phrases and those using these phrases are usually a highly qualified lead or competitors.

And this works for me! But it drives the affiliate marketer crazy as they are only looking for highly trafficked keyword phrases to make a few pennies per click. I go for those who might just be willing to part with some serious cash!

I should also note that I turned my Local SEO page into a page that focuses on local internet search maps like Google Places. I actually tried to add Google Places as a service in my Google Places (maps) account and got my account flagged!
