LinkedIn Finally Paying Off

January 17, 2012

Welcome to the Google Places SEO Citations blog at Tucson SEO Solutions.

This blog covers local SEO which is dominated by Google, Google Places and the need for citations. The blog also covers just about any thing related to Google search results and related topics. I hope that you might glean some useful resources while you are here.

LinkedIn Finally Paying Off

I have been using LinkedIn for several years now with limited success until recently. Then I attended The S.M.A.R.T. group meeting conducted by Christopher Porter. The focus of this training session was LinkedIn. I had recently sat down and had a long conversation with Chris and a small group of the entrepreneurs. He explained how he used LinkedIn for one of his clients. I walked away very impressed and very excited to hear is presentation.

I had put a lot of energy into LinkedIn and had joined about 2 dozen groups. I even started a group but I just didn’t get it. In his presentation he talked about building relationships with like minded people or those in your markets. I spoke up and mentioned that I had done this by phone when I was a national sales rep. But making this approach work online seemed odd to me.

But since what I was doing didn’t work I determined to give it a try. I started using LinkedIn in earnest of Monday, just two days ago. I have already begun to strike up multiple conversation. I simply began to go through the membership lists of groups that I belong too. I chose to take 2 different approaches to this process. I would split my time between local business marketing owners in Tucson and those involved in SEO, Social Media, or Internet marketing outside of Tucson.

I made sure to personalize each connection request by addressing each person by name. For those in Tucson I would mention that we had certain things in common such as we are both in the same city and group. And then I would ask for a connection. For those outside of Tucson I would note that we are in the same group and in similar business fields just as Chris had suggested. The response rate has been surprisingly good!

It’s when they accept the connection request that things get very interesting. Before I thank them for taking the time to accept my request I do some background research. I look over their profile and then visit their website. I am looking for something to use as a conversation starter. Sometimes I find broken links on a website or the website never loads. And I mention this in my thanks for connecting message.

Then I began to notice that most of the profiles were not taking full advantage of the 3 profile links that the site offers. You can turn these generic links into powerful anchor text links very easily. When I saw this on a profile I would respond like this.

I just wanted to say thank you for taking the time to make a connection on LinkedIn.

FYI: I provide SEO and here’s a tip to improve your profile for Google rankings. In the profiles website area you can add a keyword phase to each link like… (Here I individualize my message by adding a keyword phrase from their websites home page.)

This provides 2 solutions. It tells your profile visitors what your website is about much better than Company Website (that they were using.) It also creates a more useful anchor text link that will assist your website in ranking better in Google.

Now, I have really gotten their attention as I am providing information freely that can benefit their businesses. This approach was been warmly accepted and it gets a conversation going.

Speaking of getting a conversation going I just got off the phone with someone that I had just made a LinkedIn connection on Monday. Jennifer does seminars on internet marketing and was looking for someone to refer clients to that need SEO services. Is that cool or what?

I tell you this story as a reminder to you and myself that social media is really about building relationships. I know this but I have had a difficult time implementing it. I teach that websites needs to bring a selling presentation onto their pages. In other words what you do off line needs to be done online when it comes to selling. You must do a features and benefits presentation and then ask for the sale (call to action.)

Now, I will be teaching that you can actually bring the relationship part of sales into social media. Let’s face it, when given and opportunity people generally do business with people that they like. As for me I plan on taking what I have learned with LinkedIn and apply it on other popular sites like Facebook. I can easily see how this can be applied to people who like your pages.

Well, I just checked my email and I have a dozen people who have recently agreed to make a connection so I gotta go!

Pizza And Beer SEO

Google Places SEO Citations blog at Tucson SEO Solutions

Welcome to my blog. The blog covers all things Google, Google Places, Google Places Citations and other related marketing issues. My hope is that you will find the blog useful while you are here. I also encourage you to leave a useful comment.

Pizza And Beer SEO

Yep, one of our standard recommendations to our clients is that they practice Pizza and Beer SEO. This is how it works. When you’re building a website keyword list you should gather a diverse group of friends, family, and business associates for pizza and beer at a local hot spot. A group of twenty or so should work just fine.

Once you have the group together ask them all to make a list of words that they might enter as a search query to find your business on the web. Then sit back and enjoy your time together over pizza but hold off on the beer for now! Then after an hour or so repeat this process and record the results.

Now, allow your party to get started with the consumption of beer for the following hour. Now repeat the same process asking what keywords the group would use and record these results as well.

Now, your website keyword research kicks into high gear. You will need create a database and record all of the information that you have gathered. You can now comb through your data to see what the common trends are and glean the gems that you might have easily overlooked.

The food and alcohol will affect each person differently and these changes will be observable in a different set of keywords that are developed. Another factor that comes into play is simply the passage of time. The longer that each person has to think about it the more likely that they will choose words that they hadn’t the first time.

It’s actually like having three different groups for market research for the price of one! Not only is Pizza and Beer SEO an effective keyword development strategy, you also save on the cost of surveying three separate groups.

You, as a website owner, have no way of knowing what a persons state of mind is when they are searching for your products or services, in most cases. If the searcher is hungry or well feed will affect how they think. If someone is highly stressed or under the influence these factors will play a significant role in determining what queries that they will use to find something

It is your job to figure this out and implement what you discover both on and off your website. Pizza and Beers SEO provides real insights that will likely never be gleaned from an automated search tool.

Update: 11/14/2008 I just presented a seminar on keyword development here in Tucson where we included Pizza and Beer SEO. The program and presentation were very well received.

Update 12/03/2011: I should point out that we no longer develop websites, but we are heavily involved in developing keyword phrases, especially those of the longtail  variety. Also, I recently shared this at a social media training group and it was very well received. The toughest part of SEO is often thinking like your potential customer or client. Think like your customer or client and you will do well.

And They Call This SEO V1

Today, I got this email and I usually delete these without opening, as obviously I don’t require SEO services. But occasional I do open these up which I did today. I quickly realized that I had a blog post on my hands. So let’s examine this email together.

Hello,

Wish you Happay New year a great day

7. Social Bookmarking
8. Forum Posting
9. Blogroll Linsks
10.classified submission

We apply clean strategy as well as white hat techniques to achieve the desired results. Feel free to contact us for specific work mention above or complete SEO.

Now, I love it when they say that they will do SEO as if it is something separate from everything else in this list. Perhaps, they were talking about On Page SEO since everything else mentioned here is about Off Page SEO. And let’s not forget that there is no mention of Google Places or Social SEO here. If I have a local business they are only offering an attempt to fulfill 1/3 of my needs.

1. There is no explanation of what you are being offered here. Opinion: Likely useless.

2. Manual Directory Submission – This one worked really well in a previous century but is useless unless the directory is human edited. There are not many of these and getting listed for free is extremely difficult. Opinion: Mostly useless.

3. Quality Link Building – If they actually provided quality link building this would be extremely useful. Opinion: Not likely to happen as most people use low quality resources and automated tools for link building.

4. Blog posting – Extremely useful if done correctly. Opinion: Not enough info to determine the value offered here.

5. Article Submission – Opinion: This could be useful if done correctly. What makes this different from blog posting? Also I guess they never heard of the Panda update.

6. Press Release Submission – Opinion: This has some value but it is not very effective.

7. Social Bookmarking – Opinion: This still has some value but the sites being used must have some PR and they must provide Do Follow links. And most of these websites do not have these.

8. Forum Posting – Opinion: This one has some value if executed properly. But the sites being used must have some PR and they must provide Do Follow Anchor Text links. And most of these websites do not offer these.

9. Blogroll Links – Opinion: This one is useful if they blog has some PR, Provides Do Follow links, and is in a related business field. These are difficult to come by.

10. Classified Submission – Opinion: A real waste of time!

Well, there it is no mention of doing competitive research, Google Places, or Social SEO… Hmmm!!!!!!!!!

LinkedIn For Local Business Marketing

November 25, 2011

Welcome to the Google Places SEO Citations blog at Tucson SEO Solutions.

This blog covers local SEO which is dominated by Google, Google Places and the need for citations. The blog also covers just about any thing related to Google search results and related topics. I hope that you might glean some useful resources while you are here.

LinkedIn For Local Business Marketing

I have been using LinkedIn for years as a backlink resource and that’s about it. I had joined a dozen or so groups but that wasn’t doing a whole lot for me. I tried using the answers section but that didn’t do much for me as well. Then I began to use the site much differently based on a training session that I attended recently. I want to give a shout-out to Chris Porter who was the presenter.

How you use the site is based on you core markets and what you want to accomplish. I’m am looking to make B2B connections so my approach may differ from what will work for you. I want to connect with those in my industry to market my new website Google Places SEO Citations. But I also want to connect with those who might actually benefit from this training in Tucson.

This new site provides DIY SEO training that includes 65 or so videos covering Local SEO, Google Places SEO, Social SEO, and Holistic SEO. So I really have two core markets that includes the SEO or internet marketing crowd and the local business owner crowd.

For the SEO and internet marketing crowd the idea is to get them to try the website and then hopefully they will like it and blog about it. For the local business group I also hope that they will use the site and like it. And hopefully they will still longer than one month.

The first thing that I did and continue to do is to join groups related to my target markets. I currently am a member of about 48 groups. LinkedIn caps group memberships at 50. I have split this between the SEO/internet marketing and Tucson where I am located. This is where the work really begins and it is a time consuming process.

Just because someone is in one of these groups does not automatically make them someone worth connecting with. You will need to go through each member list looking for people to connect with that have similar interests. A similar interest be as simple being in the same group or from the same city but you need to also find decision makers.

When you find someone that you want to connect with you will need to visit their profile and then click on the gold connect button. Then you will need to state what your connection level is and click to send the connect request. And if you follow this process your connect request will most likely be ignored.

Your request will be ignored because you failed to realize that social media is about building relationships. What you have done here sends this message “I only care about what I want and not about you!” Social Media selling is a slow sales process that starts with building a relationship. And this is an area where I experienced lots of problems with in the past.

I took the same approach previously and my connection rate was about 10%. And of these connections were mostly from people that I already knew. I just was not making new connections.

I now make sure that I address the individual by first name when making the request. For the SEO/internet marketing group I suggest that since we are in the same group and have similar interested connecting might make sense. I also take the time to visit their website or blog looking for something to make a comment about. If I find something broken I will let them know. The point here is that I am trying to be a friend and not sell them anything.

I take a similar approach for those located in Tucson. I will usually make the connect request by indicating that we are both in the same group and live in Tucson so why not connect? I also visit their websites and this is where things get difficult for me. Most of the sites that I visit are in severe need of SEO and it is hard for me to not bring it to their attention. I have to keep reminding myself that I am building relationships for now and not selling. I still look for something positive to say.

I will also admit that I have only been using these approaches for about 10 days but they are bearing fruit. I had acquired about 95 connections of the previous 4 years. In 10 days I have added an additional 200 connections. I have already been contacted about doing business and I have over a dozen conversations ongoing.

LinkedIn is like any other social website it works if you use it properly. If all that you want to do is take from the site you will likely not do very well there. However, if you are willing to participate and to build relationships you will prosper. There is a direct correlation between your efforts and your results. Imagine that!

On another point. I like going to business networking events. This is especially true because I work from home and it gets me out of the home/office for a while. But I can actually get more accomplished in 2 hours on LinkedIn than I can at a networking event where I may talk with dozens of people but none of them may need, want, or desire what I have to offer. I still will do both because you never want to have all of your eggs in one basket.

Today, while on LinkedIn I discovered a way that allows you to easily share a discussion with multiple groups or individuals. This will save me huge amounts of time. Previously, I had visited each group individually and posted something, Then I visited another group and repeated the process. Now, all that I do is post the article once in my own group. Then I click on that post this take me to a page where that post appears.

From here you will want to click on the in share button. The site then will allow you to share this with individuals or groups. What I don’t know is how many shares is concerned too much or spam!

Short Sales Tips Tucson Phoenix – Getting Your Attention

Welcome to my blog. The blog covers all things Google, Google Places, Google Places Citations and other related marketing issues. My hope is hat you will find the blog useful while you are here. I also encourage you to leave a useful comment.

Short Sales Tips in Tucson or Phoenix – Getting Your Attention

As with any business there are a myriad of ways to market a business. As an SEO provider we sometimes times have an advantage. That is, if our website has a blog, and especially if that blog has something called Page Rank.

Well, this is an advantage that my business has as I have a blog that has a Page Rank of 3. Having a blog gives any local small business a huge advantage over their competitors. It gives you the opportunity to target any topic in your niche that you desire. If you want to promote a certain product or services a blog gives you ready access to these markets. It’s also a great tool for getting attention.

This especially true if you are attempting to sell a specific product or service. In my case, I am attempting to sell my SEO services, by showing my skills in action. How am I doing so far?

As a local SEO provider a blog allows me to target any market that I would like to do business in. As an example, I wanted to work with a client in the short sale segment of the real estate market. So I wrote this and 2 other posts about the industry on this blog. I quickly landed my blog posts onto the first page of the Google results almost immediately.

For me it is simply about getting the attention of perspective realtor’s in Tucson and Phoenix by targeting their niche. One of the keyword phrases that I chose to target was Short Sale Tips Tucson and Phoenix. I figured that if an SEO provider can rank well for none SEO related terms that it might get someone attention in this market.

So let’s take a look at this screen shot of the Google results for Short Sale Tips Tucson. I figured that someone looking to learn about short sales info may also be searching for tips.

As you can see here Tucson SEO Solutions has used a blog post and basic SEO techniques to acquire the # 1 position for this keyword phrase. I take the time to point this out so that I can say this. If you are a realtor in Tucson or Phoenix I could be doing this for you!

Update 09/06/2011: I was very pleased to find that I was ranking # 1 for short sale tips in Tucson. Now, I have managed to rank both #1 and # 2 in Phoenix which I think is way cool. But I would be even happier to be doing this for you!

SEO Is Like Shampoo!

May 21, 2011

Welcome to the Google Places SEO Citations blog at Tucson SEO Solutions.

This blog covers local SEO which is dominated by Google, Google Places and the need for citations. The blog also covers just about any thing related to Google search results and related topics. I hope that you might glean some useful resources while you are here.

SEO Is Like Shampoo!

This was first posted back in 2008.

As I have said many times over I believe that analogies are a very good tool when making a point about search engine optimization. If you know anything about SEO you may be scratching your heads a bit. If you are visiting in search of small business SEO solutions you may also be scratching your head as well and wondering “What is he thinking?”

Let’s take a look at what we know about search engine optimization. SEO is initially about developing keyword phrases. As the internet has grown it is now extremely difficult to acquire first page ranking on Google for one or two keyword searches. We are not saying it can’t be done, that would be a foolish statement, but it is very difficult except for very narrow niches. Of course it all depends on how competitive your market is.

So what then does SEO have in common with Shampoo? Every shampoo bottle that I have ever used tells you this “rinse and repeat.” I  believe you might want to consider repeating the SEO process after lets say 30 and 60 days after implementing it. Everyone one involved with SEO attempts to make an educated guess about what works and what doesn’t work as far as keyword phrases are concerned, but we could easily miss the mark or market. Your analytic’s program will tell you if you SEO is working.

I like talking about my own mistakes so that others may learn from them. When I launched this website the focus was on the keyword phrase organic search engine optimization in Tucson, because our services are based on organic search results delivered from Tucson. However, the  30, 60 and 90 day review revealed that we were not getting any traffic for that keyword phrase. That’s right we ranked # 1 but we didn’t get any Google traffic.

So we did a little SEO shampooing of our website and removed all references to organic SEO. We rinsed and repeated. Now, in fairness we should have stuck with some mentioning of organic SEO, but at that time we were a bit impatient.

I realized that while many nationally might understand what organic SEO is. I figured the only people likely to be searching for organic SEO were likely not buyers but members of this industry. So I decided to focus on the more realistic searches such as Tucson SEO. Since this was part of our company and domain name we had a built in advantage.

I continued to rinse and repeat every 30 days or so. Recently, we have begun to brand ourselves as providing Holistic SEO (Fall 2008) and we will be adding another page that reflects what we discovered in one of our rinse cycles. We thought Holistic SEO best describes our approach to creating websites that convert visitors into customers.

That was last year results. Our more recent SEO shampoo experience discovered that we were ranking highly for searches related to marketing and link building. I was not specifically targeting these markets. However, I discovered that we were ranking well for non-targeted searches. So I did a little SEO shampooing and we soon soared in four other keyword markets. Most of these changes were minor but may have a major impact on rankings.

Here is a suggestion that you can take to the bank. If your web page is stuck on page two try this. Add an H-1 tag to your page that includes your primary targeted keyword phrase for that page. Then a build a dozen Do Follow anchor text links that include your keyword phrase in the anchor text. Do this on highly crawled sites.

Then check your ranking results in about two weeks. Once the pages that include your links get crawled the search engines will discover your page with the H-1 tag. It will get crawled and bingo you win! Don’t believe me… Well just try it and report back.

Have you rinsed and repeated lately?

What say you?

Blogging For Links What You Need To Be Successful

January 24, 2011

Welcome to the Google Places SEO blog at Tucson SEO Solutions.

Blogging For Links What You Need To Be Successful

I am writing this post from life experience. I work at link building 7 days a week. Yes, that does mean that I am a workaholic and I have a great need to succeed. I do not recommend that you attempt to emulate my work ethic but I have some pearls of wisdom to share today.

My link building methods have been honed over 5 years. In the beginning I left my share of “nice post” comments. I was being truthful, as I had read the blog post and I agreed that it was a good post. I was looking at this from only my perspective. I needed links and the quicker that I could work the better. In most cases I added to the conversation but not always.

I am not a very good writer and if you have read my blog for a while you already know this. Grammar and spelling are difficult for those who are dyslexic which I am. I had to spell check dyslexic while writing this post. Thus it is very easy for me to make a mistake when leaving a blog post comment, especially if the comment was made when I am tired. Sometimes I come upon my old comments and cringe.

Then in May of 2008 I became a blog owner. I quickly learned what blog commenting behaviors that I liked and that I didn’t. The blog was No Follow for the first 10 months so I approved just about everything. I figured that it didn’t matter because the link was a mostly useless No Follow. Think about it; when the last time you visit a website of someone who left a “nice post” comment?

Having my own blog taught me that there are good ways to leave comments and there were also not so good ways to leave comments. I now was making a concerted effort to leave a useful comment everywhere I went.

Then the blog became Do Follow in early 2009. This would eventually lead to the link building and marketing program that I call Scratch My Back Marketing.

Since the blog was now providing useful links I began to ask that commenter’s leave a 20 word comment at the end of each post. I started calling this requirement Scratch My Back Marketing. I expanded on this to make it our way of building links.

The basic idea was to create a link building program that focused on  branding and advertising  while building links. I knew from experience that a great relevant comment can lead to business. I also like to multitask so the idea of doing multiple things while link building was a no brainier for me.

That comment length requirement that I asked for was almost 100 % completely ignored. I got frustrated with my commenter’s. After all; I was providing an anchor text Do Follow backlink and was using Comment and Keyword Luv. I figured this kind of link was worth leaving a good comment. It’s what I would do, but I was wrong. People were only coming to the to comment for a link and they were not willing to work for it. They seldom bothered to even read the post.

That didn’t make me very happy. I even considered going back to No Follow, but I decided to create an anti spam plugin instead that I called Scratch My Back Marketing. It allows the blog owner to set a character threshold on comments before they are allowed a link. On this blog it currently requires a comment of 150 characters in length or the comment is automatically rejected.

The current problem that I am addressing is the use of only keywords only in the comment field. I have had comments that were several hundred words in length that were rejected. The blog uses Keyword Luv and it requires that a name be used along with your keywords. Yet, every day the blog receives a dozen or more comments that only use keywords. If the comment is useful and relevant I will use it without providing a link. I have been recording the daily results in the post, It Is Hard To Find A Useful Comment.

So then how do you successfully blog comment for links? That I will get to in Part 2 of this post! I needed to whine before I got to the serious post.

Ten Reasons Not Too Blog

January 2, 2011

Welcome to the Google Places SEO blog at Tucson SEO Solutions.

Ten Reasons Not Too Blog

I wrote this back in 2007. I posted it on a bunch of forums. I though it was funny but many of the commenter’s did have my point of view which of course I though was strange. So here it is again.

1. Time.
2. No Time.
3. Not Enough Time.
4. Finding The “Write Time.”
5. Takes Way Too Much Time.
6. Developing A Story Demands Your Time.
7. Return On Investment Very Uncertain Over Time.
8. Comment Responding Demands Detailed Attention And More Time.
9. Reading, Writing, And Research Requires Copious Amounts Of Time.
10. Trusted And Steady Readers Can Only Be Obtained Over Time.

Do you have the Time?

As I went back over this post I still agree that’s its present a fair look at the negative side of blogging and its required time element. I mostly enjoy blogging but it really demands my attention as I have dyslexia. I off reread posts many times over and miss obvious mistakes. This post is over three years old and I discovered a minor error today!

I used to have Geri proof read my posts before publishing them. However, since her illness I have been on my own. This all came into focus today as I was working my way through my blog one post at a time. I am purging old posts so I am reliving my blog one post at a time.

More on this later!

Twitter Worth 3.7 Billion?

December 26, 2010

Welcome to the Google Places SEO blog at Tucson SEO Solutions

Before I get into today’s post I want to recognize and welcome our visitors from the Arizona communities of New River or Cave Creek. Please know that you are here because I have specifically targeted you and your businesses need to rank well in the Google Places search results. I hope that you find this information useful.

Twitter Worth 3.7 Billion?

I get the Wall Street Journal delivered to my home/office 6 times a week. Unlike many these days I do not use an e-reader like Kindle. I am old school in that I prefer to actually read a newspaper and I will continue to do so as long as they are still available.

I get most of my blogging material while on Twitter. The second my used source is from the day to day operations of this business. My third most popular source is the Wall Street Journal. Now, I should note that I seldom ever read the editorial pages, but it is a valuable business tool for me.

Yesterday, I noticed and article that said that Twitter is worth $3.7 Billion. What blew me away is the fact that Twitter has yet to become profitable. They haven’t done a very good job squeezing money out of advertising for now. This huge valuation is based on potential and has little to do reality.

This is a common problem with many if not most social media sites. They attract ten of million of users but they have trouble turning this user base into a profit center. It’s not like Twitter isn’t trying. They offer promoted Tweets for something like $100,000 a day. It’s difficult for me to see how this translates into new business for the advertisers.

I wish Twitter all the best. But I just don’t see that this valuation makes any sense.

Google Places SEO – I Have Never Seen This

December 14, 2010

Welcome to the Google Places SEO blog at Tucson SEO Solutions.

Before I get into today’s post I want to recognize and welcome our visitors from the Arizona communities of Carefree and El Mirage.   Please know that you are here because I have specifically targeted you and your businesses need to rank well in the Google Places search results. I hope that you find this information useful.

Google Places SEO – I Have Never Seen This

I know that I might sound like a broken record to my regular readers but this is something that I had not seen before. I had actually intended to search for SEO Local. But I was tired and searched for Local SEO. The results in this screenshot are typical of what I would have expected to see.

SEO Local Tucson

It is the second screenshot where I discovered something that I had never seen before and I check this almost daily. Notice that as part of Google’s Places Search it included a local website into its national results. Prior to this I had never seen a business listing for the search Local SEO. What seems strange to me is that Google stopped showing our listing for the search Tucson SEO last week.

I have seen my site appear for this search before because for a long time we ranked # 5 but that was in the organic results. Never before have I ever seen where the Places map listing appears like this. As I like to say Google giveth and Google taketh.
