SEO Done As Search In Tucson
I seldom do a keyword ranking search for just SEO from a Tucson ip address. I know that I usually rank in the 4th or 4th position. I am usually behind major SEO sites, Wikipedia, or Google. But I am always the first local SEO provider mentioned the the search results from Tucson.
Today, I did a search for SEO and I discovered that the site is ranking # 2 from a Tucson area ip. The only site that ranks ahead off me is Wikipedia. I don’t know when this happened. But I had noticed that more people were finding my site by using just SEO.
This represents a huge change for the site. Prior to Google rolling out Places Search or Blended Search in 10/2010 no one ever found my site using just SEO. That’s because I was ranking on page 40 or something like that. But blended search mixed local results with national results thus I was now being found by more people in Tucson. Still ranking behind these big boys of SEO wasn’t providing much of a boost. But it was generating some website traffic so I was very happy.
Now, I am even more happy to see that I’m ranking # 2. And this likely is what was been producing more business inquiries. For me December has always been a dead month for new business leads. But that has changed this year. I actually have been pleasantly surprised by all of the new business leads. The hardest part of all of this is being able to get a hold of those I want to follow up with during the holiday season.
Here is a screen shot of what I found today.
I will gladly accept ranking # 2 to SEO for Tucson based searchers in Google. Now I know why I have seen an increase in SEO inquiries…. YEA!

Google’s Google Places Page And Descriptive Terms
Welcome to the Google Places SEO Citations blog at Tucson SEO Solutions.
Welcome to my blog. The blog covers all things Google, Google Places, Google Places Citations and other related marketing issues. My hope is that you will find the blog useful while you are here. I also encourage you to leave a useful comment.
Google’s Google Places Page And Descriptive Terms
Sometimes corporations do the weirdest things that leave ya” scratching your head. Some times it evolves wasting billions of dollars on questionable purchases of other businesses. And sometimes they create products that serve on real purpose or that were rolled out way to soon, or both.
Let take for instance, Cisco’s purchase of the Flip videos camera for about $590 million. Now, that was back in the Spring of 2009. Then in the spring of 2011 they shuttered the company. They likely took it as a write down and that was that. In the process cutting almost 600 jobs. They never saw that the smart phone was replacing the need for Flip like devices.
Or maybe I should examine HP for its $1.2 Billion purchase of Palm and its web OS software. This software was the engine that ran it’s new iPad killer called Touch. Touch is a tablet meant to compete with the iPad from Apple. It was rolled out about three months ago with an iPad like price. Soon that price was dropped to $399.00 Then recently HP said it was closing down the touch, as in it would no longer be manufacturing the product.
HP began to blow the remaining stock for $99.oo Now, the tablet that cost $309.00 to manufacture has a hit. So much so, that HP decided to rev up the production again. Yep, there losing over $200.00 per unit and they decided to make some more. Is this crazy or what? And the are still planning on walking away from their investment, which with advertising make it about a $1.5 Billion loss.
Since I have been discussing some really bad tech businesses decisions you likely know where this one is going. You likely are starting to think about Google’s purchase of Motorola Mobility for about $13 Billion. But that’s not where this post is going. Bur the boneheaded Google topic that I want
But I said this article was about Google and more specifically about its home office’s Places listing and the Descriptive Terms that appear in its listing. This is a screen shot Google’s Mountain View Places page.
It might be hard to see Google’s Places page Descriptive Terms so lets take a closer look.
That’s right it say’s “western union” “quick cash” “proceedings of” “account” and “e-mail.” Of these only e-mail and account could be readily associated with Google. Just like Cisco and HP, Google appears to have made a rushed decision with the introduction of Descriptive Terms. If Google’s algorithm for this feature can not accurately describe itself how will it ever work on other Places pages?
It makes ya” wonder what’s going on with Google and these other tech companies. How can all these brilliant minds make so many bad decisions? As for Google, this is yet another example of many problems that Google is experiencing with its Places pages. It also isn’t very encouraging when Google’s can’t even describe its own business very well with this feature!

# 4 Out Of 156 Million V 2.0

# 4 Out Of 156 Million V 2.0
Lately, I have been going over my previous posts and refreshing the ones that I really liked. I particularly liked this post as I believe that it goes a long way to debunk the Google Sandbox theory. When I started this blog I used Do Follow Lists to promote the blog and site.
In a very short amount of time we were able to take our Do Follow Lists onto the first page of Google. While the content of that post (the lists) have been removed the post still rank very well, as in # 1 in the Google SERP’s. Not very many blog post are still ranking on the first page of Google almost two years later. If you know your market well and are willing to put in the effort you can rank well, and very quickly, in most markets.
The market for the keyword phrase Do Follow List and Do Follow Blog List has become much more competitive since then. When I first went after this phrase there were a lot of web pages that included these words on their page, as in 156 Million. However, not many of these where doing so for commercial purposes. That has changed dramatically since then with hundreds of sites selling some kind of Do Follow product. I seriously doubt that we would have this rapid success today. Often success in search and in life is all about timing.
Here is the original post # 4 Out Of 156 Million:
Our SEO practice is all about developing and exploiting niche opportunities. Since SEO is basically a numbers game, you want to target your keyword phrases that are actually being used, but that have only a few competitors. It comes down to the fewer competitors the better.
So while we do well at landing this website on the first page of results for SEO related searches, these would not be considered competitive. That’s the whole purpose of what we are trying to achieve.
So today, I read a question on a forum that I had never visited before. It asked “what is the most competitive keyword that you have ranked for?” I knew that we ranked high for the search “Do Follow List” but I never pay any attention to how many results came up on a Google search for this term. Well, the answer is that we are #4 out of 156 Million search results… Wow!
All of those ahead of us have had 8 months to a year or more advance lead on us. So to say that we are pleased would be an understatement. I am still a little bit in the clouds over this revelation.
We were able to accomplish this because we put in over 300 hours developing the list and marketing it effectively. The whole project was created as linkbait for the relaunching of our website and it has worked very well.
05/15/2011: The Do Follow List would eventually end up ranking extremely well for over 2 years. Most of that time it ranked # 1. It continued to rank well for a year and a half after the contents had been removed due to spam. As it turned out all of these spam comment about a list that no longer existed keep the post ranking well. But I finally got tired of this spam traffic and I removed all 10 Do Follow lists.
This caused a 50% drop to the website and it eliminated most spam comments. That post still is one of the most visited pages on the site even thou it no longer exists. It now redirects to the blogs main page!

Keeping Up With Page Rank

Keeping Up With Page Rank
This post was originally posted back in 2009. This site has been closed.
This is not a post that indicates some hidden truth or explanation about Page Rank. No, it is simply a post that indicates why I pay so little attention to it. Our site and blog had been sitting with a PR of 3 up until the most recent update. Then they both dropped down to a PR of 2. Both had seen steady increases in links so I was a bit perplexed, but it seemed to be part of a general trend. Many websites are experiencing PR down grades these days.
Then I noticed that our Tucson Small Business Networking Group site had a PR of 4. The site was just launched in May and Yahoo’s Site Explorer showed only 17 backlinks recorded. How could this be? Brand new sites are not supposed to have any PR. So how then did I end up with a PR of 4? This is beyond my understanding. Page rank is supposed to be a delayed report based on months old information.
Then today I discovered that the site and blog now have a PR of 3 and the networking site has experienced a downgrade to a PR 3. Could it be a fluke in the Page Rank? I don’t know. It is still this way days later and nothing has changed!
Do you have any ideas?

Does Your Service Website Meet The “Needs Factor”

Does Your Service Website Meet The “Needs Factor”
This was first posted back in 2008.
It is fair to say that many buyers of website services and many designers don’t understand that service website visitors are “Need Buyers.” They as a group do not want to be provided with any “Wow Factor” from your website.
Believe me, when my vehicles AC wet out on April 14th in Tucson, I wasn’t buying “Wow” when I did my Google search for “auto AC repair Tucson.” I needed my AC fixed, as of yesterday. I was a “Needs Buyer.”
All I cared about was, could you solve my problem (Need) today? (Benefit) During my Google search if I clicked towards your website and it loaded slow because of flash on the site I would just click away.
If you didn’t make it easy for me to determine that you could solve my problem I would also leave. It’s fair to say that most service purchases are accompanied with a fair amount of stress. This is especially true for purchasing for buying website services. The consumer generally isn’t sure what is best for their needs.
Our websites are designed to clearly define what your website is offering. We also define the benefit for the consumer. The benefit here is that you are the business that best can fulfill their needs. We also assist you in providing what is known as “a call to action.” This is the part where you actually ask for their business.
The service business website needs to create leads and appointments, so there primary goal is to create an inquiry by email and preferably by phone. If the designer that you are choosing doesn’t understand how to build a website for the ‘Needs buyer” you should probably find one that does.
Think about it…. If your homes roof is leaking or your car will not start, do you really care about a websites look and feel? No, you want to know this, “Can you solve my problem, and now?
Does your website offer solutions?

An SEO Gets Shopped
Welcome to the Niche Internet Marketing Services blog at Tucson SEO Solutions.
An SEO Gets Shopped
This post goes back in time to when we first began to domination all searches related to SEO and internet marketing in Tucson. We are were just beginning to emerge nationally as a force to reckoned with in the SEO industry in the US. I will interject some points as I go.
If you have been any business long enough a competitor will dial you up on the tele or, as the lazy ones do they send a email to get the shopping going. They always start the conversation off by inquiring about the fees that you charge. This is especially true if your product or service pricing is not posted on your website. One must be quick and clever to determine who is a real potential client and who is a competitor trying to acquire your pricing structure.
The shopper is rarely an established player in your industry, but they could be. This is where I love to being to direct the conversation to where I am the inquirer. The shopper usually doesn’t have a website yet or they are in the process of acquiring a business that has an existing website. Then there is the new kid on the block who starts of with “I have a client.” That may be true or they are breaking into the business and bidding on a job and that are looking for pricing guidance.
I don’t have a problem with this at all. I have done this hundreds of times over the decades myself so I am very familiar with the sport and I play it well!. When someone calls I’m a very good judge of who is real and who is not or at least I have convinced myself that’ this is so.
Another clear giveaway is if someone starts off by asking a whole bunch of questions without identifying themselves first, you can almost be certain that you are being shopped.
If they pause or stumble when you ask these questions you know you’re being shopped.
• What is the domain name?
• What is your business?
• What do you want your website visitor to do on your website?
• Who are you trying to market?
If the visitor hesitates on any of these questions you can be sure that your time is being wasted by a shopper. However, those who are skilled shoppers may be prepared for these questions. They are a little harder to catch. After all I role play the call many times before I shop a business. If you know how to ask the right questions it can be easy.
If someone seems more interested in pricing then anything else in the conversation I explain that everything starts with a website review and that is a paid service. I then ask them to email me from their website to get the ball rolling or something to that effect. If they are a serious inquiry they will email while you’re talking. If they make excuses, at this point, you know this is a waste of time and I quickly end the call. If they ask you why this is needed you can state its company policy to assure that this is a genuine sales call.
I mention this because I got shopped today by someone from the San Francisco Bay area code. We have just started targeting the area in advance of our new website launch. So I have been expecting these types of calls.
Sometimes the caller jumps right into the deep end of the pool from the get go. They asked if we do page titles, page descriptions, Meta tags, and ALT tags and what we charged. Well, nothing like cutting to the chase. What they didn’t realize is that real customers don’t talk like that. They just want to acquire search traffic and had read that SEO is the way to go. They don’t generally understand how we do what we do.
That’s was 2 years ago and things have changed dramatically. Callers inquiring about our services are smarter and more aware about the process of SEO. When I began this business back in 2007 things were much different as far the the potential client knowledge of SEO. The response was mostly “I read something on a blog like you need SEO to rank well, but that’s all that I know.
Yesterday, I was being shopped by an inexperienced shopper I thought I would have a little fun. It started with the basic questions I mentioned previously, and of course they didn’t have a website. They went on to explain that they wanted to market to the 48 states and that he was going to be selling computer parts.
Well, our website is very clear that we don’t provide service for highly competitive markets that are national. I went on to explain that if his market was local we would gladly consider him as a client. I further explained that we only take on clients that when know going in can benefit greatly from our services.
Trying to take a website that sells computer parts nationally to the first page of Google is not a challenge that I will undertake. While I noted that it can be accomplished given enough time and money it was not anything that I wanted to be involved with. Its just not my market.
This person quickly became very defensive and started talking SEO slang and went on to explain how it could be accomplished. I thought this guy is so clueless that he is being played and he doesn’t even know it. Then he started talking about Page Rank. I have never had a client or potential client that knows what Page Rank is. By now this person is talking straight-up SEO shop talk. To this day I have never had a real potential client know anything about Page Rank this was so obvious that I could barely contain my laughter.
Since I had flushed him out the conversation needed to end. I politely ended the conversation by informing him that I don’t work on these kinds of sites and moved on. I have become very skilled at ending a conversation quickly and abruptly when I have finally gotten bored.
The moral of the story is if you’re going to shop someone get the story straight first and don’t sound like you know so much that you really don’t need my help. If this caller knew about page titles, Meta tags, page descriptions, and ALT tags then why would they need me?
With the economic slowdown, like many, I have had sometime on my hands. When I get shopped these days I am more likely to get up on a soapbox an give a long winded lesson on who we provide ethical services based only on the specific needs of each client. I go into great detail about our manual link building program Called Scratch My Back Marketing.
I also provide a detailed explanation about our website review. I going through just about every step in our processes for our client. I provide them a map, a oral blueprint of how to provide services that assure that the clients needs are assured. If by change it turns out that it an actual potential client then they will certainly know that they are dealing with a professional.
For the shopper, I am an unashamed braggart. My attitude is, and I express to whomever I am speaking with. When I simply state “the difference between myself and most other SEO providers is that we simply this; I like to think that I work smarter and I put in more hours at this than they do.” If you are willing to do what it takes you will succeed. I also remind my inquirer of our monthly ranking report. I also never fail to mention that we have never failed to get a client onto the first page of the Google results (pause for effect) multiple keyword phrases.

How to Construct Page Titles For High Rankings

How to Construct Page Titles For High Rankings
This is an update of a post from 2008.
We have learned, as many of you have the importance of creating effective Page Titles for your website. When talking to clients, potential clients, or individuals at business mixers this is how we explain Page Titles. We compare Page Titles to the “location, location, location” mantra of real estate. The Page Title is that important if you want to rank your website well in the search results.
A lot has been written about the use of effective keywords in page titles. Google limits the length of the page title shown in its results to around 70 characters. You can go longer and it will be indexed, but it will not appear in the SERP’s. If you’ve ever seen a title in the results that ended like this … then you know that the title went beyond the 70 character limit. This limit includes spaces. There is a very good reason why you should not go long. Around 45% or so of web searchers use the Page Title when choosing to click on a result. So if your keyword appears beyond the space limit it will be out of view. Out of sight often means that your effort has been wasted. Don’t get greedy and over optimize as it will work against you.
Also don’t include throw away words like and or the. Eliminate using symbols such as @,$,!, or & and also avoid using commas. We are going to take a look at the home page title from our old house cleaning website. This site launched an SEO career. It should become apparent why very soon. The Page Title reads:
Tucson House Home Cleaning Janitorial Service Office Business
And these are some of the possible combination of keywords that include the Geo-targeted keyword Tucson.
Tucson Cleaning Service
Tucson House Cleaning
Tucson House Cleaning Service
Tucson Home Cleaning
Tucson Home Cleaning Service
Tucson Janitorial
Tucson Janitorial Service
Tucson Janitorial Cleaning Service
Tucson Office Cleaning
Tucson Office Cleaning Service
Tucson Business Cleaning
Tucson Business Cleaning Service
So this gives us a total of 12 Keyword phrases in the title.
This is how I ruled the SERP’s in Tucson for our cleaning service website. It ranked for 33 different keyword phrases on the first page of the Google results. Did I say that we closed that business and now exclusively provide SEO services.
Sure these are niche markets that have very few searches every day or month. That’s why a local business or niche website must target long tail keywords. You must target as many possible keyword phrases related to your business as possible.
I have had many SEO professionals berate me for my niche approach to SEO. They always say “Well, that keyword doesn’t get many searches.” I counter it does matter because I rank well for the services that I offer and in the markets where I offer them. Some people have a hard time acknowledging others who are successful in their field of business.
The real beauty of page titles is getting two pages indexed on the first page of the Google results. This can be easily done if you target the same keyword phrase on two pages. Just to a Google search for Tucson SEO or Tucson SEO Solutions and you will see what I mean. Just make minor changes in the titles and you’ll be OK. Never, I mean never use duplicate page titles.
Remember never repeat the same word twice in your page titles it is a total waste. Strangely, I see SEO’ers doing this mistake all the time and I laugh at their folly and inexperience.
When you create your page titles it is better if you list your product or service first then add the city. SEO Tucson is how real searchers will find my business. SEO guys will usually search for Tucson SEO. I have followed the differences for several years and this is what I have found. Those who search using SEO Tucson stay longer on the site and they visit more pages.
Here is the reason why this is so. Someone searchers for SEO first and they don’t find what they were looking for. Then they search again and add Tucson to their search query. However, this trend is disappearing for those who use Google as it delivers results based on your ip address. So even if you did not express a local intent Google may provide you with local results or a mix of local and national depending on the competitive nature of your query.
Are you ready to create effective page titles?

Yea For CNN, The Wall Street Journal,
and for web privacy
I am on the internet for many, many hours every day. And I seldom give privacy much thought. But with all the attention that Facebook has had lately it has been getting my attention.
Usually, I figure that I am not much concerned about privacy as I seldom put much private information on social sites. Then, I happened to be surfing the cable channels for something of interest to watch when I stopped at CNN. It was then I caught a blurb about internet privacy so I stuck around to hear the story.
The reporter was interviewing a journalist from my favorite rag, the Wall Street Journal. What I heard about privacy issues caused me to sit up and to pay attention. I soon was on the WSJ site reading the article that was mentioned and other related items. Soon I downloaded three Firefox plugins that would address the problem.
I truly recommend that you read this information that is being presented. You will want to read How To Avoid Prying Eyes. You will also want to read the related article that appear below the post. I must say that I was amazed and a bit creep-ed out by all of this.

SEO Doesn’t Have To Take Forever At Least Not For me V 2.0
SEO Doesn’t Have To Take Forever At Least Not For me V 2.0
I am tired of hearing that SEO takes a long time. I don’t believe this to be true, at least not for me. Now, I will agree if you are in a competitive market and you have 20 – 30 websites determined to be on the first page of Google for your targeted keywords you will have a difficult if not nearly impossible task on your hands. This is especially true if any of these sites are several years old and the keyword phrase appears in their url.
There is one thing to remember about SEO. The difficulty factor has very little to do with the number of search results that a particular search produces. Last year we created some Do Follow list of blogs and forums. At that time a Google search for “Do Follow List” Produced around 156 Million results. Yet, our page that targeted this search went to the first page in less than a month and stayed there.
Why was this possible? The fact is that even though 156 Million pages included these three words on a page it still was not a competitive search at that time. This was not a search that was competitive. People wrote about the subject and that was about it. Since then the search has become much more competitive with many sites offering lists and Do Follow search capabilities and tools.
Several months ago I created a new page on the website that targets Holistic SEO. This search produces about 390,000 results. We were able to land that page on the first page within three weeks. This is not a highly competitive search by volume.
Last Month I re-titled my blog to include the keyword phrase Phoenix SEO. This search for Phoenix SEO only produced 304,000 results at that time. However, there are perhaps 20 companies actively targeting this phrase. Yet, in less than three weeks we were a regular on the first page of Google for this search. My advantage here is I have a blog that is regularly updated. It is mostly competing against static pages. Thus I have a huge advantage and the blog has gone as high as # 2.
Then on April 2 I created another yet another page That targets Arizona SEO Solutions. This is another low volume low but competitive search. After less than two weeks that page ranks # 2 in Google searches. Google often ranks new pages well. Staying there has proven much harder because it is competitive. There are about 20 companies that are actively pursuing this search. Now, I am no genius here. I don’t use any tricks and only I use good old basic SEO and basic ethical link building methods. I also pick my targets well. There is nothing automated here we manually acquire links . We earn links by adding value to other sites and by providing something worth linking too.
I shake my head when I read that SEO takes time.
Update 05/18/2010: I have been proving that ranking well is not difficult or at least in most local or niche markets. I have recently written several posts here that targeted specific communities for our SEO Services. I have seen some of these posts go to the number one position immediately and stay there.
However, I am working on a project that is more competitive and it required lots of links. Even though the site had been around for five years it didn’t have any backlinks at all. It began it rank well for some long tail keywords almost right away. However, it has taken three months to rank on the first page of Google for its primary keyword phrase. Had I spent more time on this project it likely could have occurred much more quickly.
SEO is easy if you are highly motivated, which I am.

Comment Policy Update 2009
I thought it was time to address the SEO crowd and link builders that visits here often and who leaves comments. I have a very simple policy when it comes to providing links to my competitors. I will not provide a link on this blog that will give you a competitive advantage. This simply would be a foolish business policy for me to provide you with a one way link. However, if you have a blog that does not require me to register I will provide you folks with a link.
Many companies and individuals offers SEO services but they do not have a blog. So I can never acquire a return link if I chose to make a comment on their blog because they don’t have one. This may seem silly to some but this is my bread and butter. If you can not return the favor then I am not interested in providing you with a link.
Our business completes in Tucson, Phoenix, and across the US and Canada. So if you provide SEO services in any of these areas then you are a competitor you will not acquire links from here unless you have a blog. I actually had a direct competitor from Phoenix that started leaving 3 and 4 comments per visit and he visited every few days. The comments were great. However, when I visited his blog he never would approve my comments. That discovery prompted me to delete his comments. I also emailed him to explain my position.
I just thought that it was time to make a formal statement on this subject.
We have created the Scratch My Back Marketing plugin which requires comments to be at least 150 characters in length or about 20 words. Just think of it as a Tweet. If you do not meet this requirement will comment will be rejected!
If you do not properly execute Keyword Luv by using the @ symbol in your anchor text you will not acquire a link and I will use your comment. You simply should know better by now! This is the biggest reason why links are denied here. If all you can do is enter your keywords you will not get a link. I am still amazes that so many people ignore that the site uses this plugin. It’s all about following directions!
No profanity………………! Allowed Even the mildest forms will be deleted.
If you insert links into comments that are self promotion those links will be deleted.
Tucson SEO will not provide links to the following types of sites.
Porno
Gambling
Drugs
New blogs with little or no content (20 posts required with some comments included)
Political sites
One page marketing sites
Foreign language sites
All affiliate marketing sites and blogs that means yours!
If your comment appears to be spammy it will likely be deleted
If you want to be argumentative that will not fly either. Th reality here is this blog is part of my businesses marketing plan. It turns off clients to see arguing on the blog so it is not acceptable behavior. I will gladly let you make your point and I will counter that point. Then the discussion is over. I don’t have the time nor desire for protracted discussions. This isn’t a forum. It’s a blog, and it’s my blog
Finally, for those who like to tell me how to run my blog or business your comments like will never be published.
And that’s that!
We at Tucson SEO Solutions are officially requesting that you join the conversation here. That is, if you found that this post was at all interesting, useful, or perhaps you are just looking for a useful link. Then, I would like to entice you to comment by providing you with useful backlinks as part of what I call “Scratch My Back Marketing.”
The Scratch My Back Marketing requires you to scratch this blog by leaving a useful comment of at least 20 words or more. Your comment should be relevant to the post. My scratch is that you will receive a Do Follow anchor text link (Keyword Luv.) And if you have a blog with an RSS feed enabled you will receive an extra permalink back to your blog via Comment Luv.
It’s all about win/win marketing. I am willing to exchange page rank for the bump that a fresh comment provides.
Are you ready to exchange comments for links?
