I Dont Twitter I Wont Twitter V 2.0

February 23, 2010

Back in May of 2008 I wrote the first version of I Don’t Twitter I Won’t Twitter. I did not have a complete understanding of Twitter at that time. So I am glad that the blog was new and that I didn’t have any traffic. I had compared Twitter to texting. This wasn’t to far off, but I had never used the service and I was just guessing. I wanted new content and I failed to do proper research.

I have since gotten on and off the twitter bandwagon. I still have an account but I may not have used t this year. I still get announcements that new people are following me which I find funny since I rarely post to Twitter. If I want to reach people that I actually know I will use Facebook. I only accept friends requests from those that I actually know.

I used to follow Andy Bailey the creator of the Comment Luv plugin. But I got bored getting his updates about his residential moving experiences and his personal life. I used to follow other known and not so known SEO’ers. But I stopped that as well. They were all just providing links to useless information. And I certainly do not care what you had for lunch. This position makes me an outcast in the SEO community and that’s ok with me.

I did a 3 month trial to see if I could benefit from Twitter. I would list daily blog post links. Then I checked Google Analytics. I discovered that Twitter traffic bounced 100% of the time. I also never had anyone leave a comment that said they saw me on twitter. So for me the ROI was just not there.

However, I wrote an article sometime ago about Dell using Twitter. Over a three year period Dell posted coupons on Twitter and they claimed to have made 3 Million in sales this way. So I discovered if your business uses coupons or offers changing entertainment it is wise to use Twitter. It seems to work very well for night clubs. Outside of a few industries I really think Twitter is a waste of time.

However, as you may have noticed it can be a great tool for social change as we have witnessed in Iran. I think the news updates on cable that use Twitter updates are mostly amusing. Without following CNN on Twitter I have no way of knowing how representative these updates really are. Some one makes the decision on what they air. Thus these Twitter updates on news programs may only reflect the producers bias and I not going to jump on Twitter to verify it myself.

Since Twitter offers almost no SEO value except for the profile links it is useless for me.

If you have found a way to make money on Twitter I surely would like to hear about it.

Pizza And Beer SEO

January 26, 2010

Yep, one of our standard recommendations to our clients is that they practice Pizza and Beer SEO. This is how it works. When you’re building a website keyword list you should gather a diverse group of friends, family, and business associates for pizza and beer at a local hot spot. A group of twenty or so should just fine.

Once you have the group together ask them all to make a list of words that they might enter as a search query to find your business on the web. Then sit back and enjoy your time together over pizza but hold of on the beer for now! Then after and hour or so repeat this process and record the results.

Allow your party to get started with the consumption of beer for the following hour. Now repeat the same process asking what keywords the group would use and record these results as well.

Now, your website keyword research kicks into high gear. Now, you will need create a database and record all of the information that you have gathered. You can now comb through your data to see what the common trends are and glean the gems that you might have easily overlooked.

The food and alcohol will affect each person differently and these changes will be observable in a different set of keywords that are developed. Another factor that comes into play is simply the passage of time. The longer that each person has to think about it the more likely that they will choose words that they hadn’t the first time.

It’s actually like having three different groups for market research for the price of one! Not only is Pizza and Beer SEO an effective keyword development strategy, you also save 66 % of the cost of surveying two separate groups. It also will cut you time cost in half.

You have no way of knowing what peoples state of mind this when they are searching. If you searchers is hungry or well feed these will effect how they think. If someone is highly stressed or under the influence these factors will play a significant role in determining what searches that they will use to find anything on the net.

You see, we understand that all successful websites are a collaborative effort between designer and client. The client does their keyword research and we do ours. Then together we combine this palette of words to paint a well defined and highly targeted website for both the search engine and the customer.

Update: 11/14/2008 I just presented a seminar on keyword development here in Tucson where we included Pizza and Beer SEO. The program and presentation were very well received.

Now, go forth to conquer the SERP’s in your market.

SEO By Google – The SEO Guide

August 20, 2009

That’s right Google has created an SEO Starter Guide that clearly explains the fundamentals of search engine optimization, and it free. But before I go any further, let’s take a look back at Google’s change of heart concerning SEO. That’s right, change of heart. The fact that Google is now embracing SEO represents a 180 degree change for Google.

Back in the day, in a not so distant past Google was at odds with SEO and considered them spammers. Old timers in this business love to tell how easy it was to manipulate the search engines to gain high rankings. That put the SEO community in direct conflict with the search engines. At that time search optimizing a website meant cramming a bunch of keywords in the Meta tags. That morphed to cramming a bunch of keywords into the content. Then it again morphed into a focus on links when it was discovered that Google’s algorithm was based on backlinks. Since our efforts were considered to be spamming Google was forced to adjust their algorithms accordingly and continually.

Google’s spokesman on all matters concerning Search Engine Optimization, Matt Cutts, is part of Google’s anti spam unit. This shows us all what Google has thought about the whole SEO industry. Only recently has Google began to change its position. A few months ago they adjusted their webmaster guidelines (July 2008) to reflect a more positive view on SEO. Then a few months later (October 2008) they created their own search engine optimization starter guide. As our industry has matured Google has finally embraced our services as legitimate.

This change is good for everyone involved. Their actions have the effect of legitimizing our industry, which has had a checkered past. SEO can be very confusing for a beginner because there are a myriad of opinions and until now there has been no clear direction provided by the search engines on the best practices. That has finally come to a screeching halt.

I spend a fair amount of time on a couple of dozen industry related forums. I often suggest that people visit Google webmaster guidelines to get the true Google view of things. This is especially true when it comes to discussions on link building. Now, I have a reference for SEO related questions. Yesterday, I linked about a dozen forum comments directly to this document. In other words, this is what Google has to say about SEO.

What Google fails to mention is that it places length restrictions on Page Titles and Page Descriptions that appear in the search results. Generally Page Titles should not exceed 65 characters and spaces. Page Descriptions should should not exceed 160.

I am now, planning on incorporating this starter guide as part of my hand-outs at our seminars. Thank you Google.

SEO Creates Opportunities

December 16, 2008

The Internet has come a long way in a short amount of time. Initially if you had a floral shop it was very easy to be found for a search for flowers. Do a search today on Google and you will find that search produces 296 million websites that have the word flower on one of their web pages.

If you did another Google search for fresh flowers it will produce 7 million results. Now, lets consider what opportunities that we can create using some search engine optimization. SEO is often about finding niche ways to describe your website to the search engines.

This time we will add some Geo-targeting SEO to the search for fresh flowers. We will use the city of Chicago. Now we are beginning to create some real possibilities with this search. Our search on Google for fresh flowers in Chicago produced only 567,000 results. The fewer websites that you have competing in any one market will increase the likelihood of your website gaining high search rankings. There is no downside to the fact that there are fewer searches being preformed. The reason is because the longer the search query is the more targeted those searchers are becoming. These searchers are more likely to be converted into customers.

To have a realistic opportunity to succeed in gaining search engine traffic your website must appear on the first page of the search results, and preferably in the Google results. Now, if your flower shop happens to be on the south side of Chicago you will also want to optimize your website for that keyword phrase as well. You will have provided yourself a wonderful opportunity to succeed. In reality SEO is about creating opportunities to obtain high search engine placement. A search on Google for fresh flowers south Chicago will produce 235,000 search results.

You can do everything correct SEO wise, you can soar to the top of the first page, but that alone will not compensate for the content on your website. This is where “the content is king” part comes into play. It is not enough to simply get website visitors.

This is why we have chosen to provide a Holistic SEO approach when working with our clients. SEO can get potential clients to the front door (your website) but that is where SEO ends its job. Now you must take an active role in presenting your content in a specific pattern that is designed to funnel your visitors into a buying situation. Finally, “the call to action,” you must actually ask for the sale or a phone call e-mail etc.

SEO will create the possibilities it is up to you to close the deal.

We are officially requesting that you join the conversation here. That is, if you found that this post was at all interesting, useful, or perhaps you are just looking for a useful link. Do You Play To Win?

August 7, 2008

We believe that the process of search engine optimization will help almost any website soar in the search rankings. Given enough time and resources it is possible for almost any website to rank well in the search results, by that we are talking about the first page of the Google results.

Any successful SEO provider knows that if you go where the crowds aren’t you will be successful. That’s why so much effort goes into Keyword research. The huge benefit here is that using long tail search you have less competing sites and that your visitor is now highly targeted and motivated to buy.

A good example of a long tail search would be the search for “increased website traffic Tucson” There is no doubt that the person using this search query wants more traffic to their website and that it has a Tucson customer base.

Do you play to win?

Flirting With The Big Leagues Of SEO

April 28, 2008

Our Business has had tremendous success obtaining first page placement in the Goggle search results for SEO related search queries. This has all been accomplished in just over 14 months. We first began to study search engine optimization back in October of 2006. Our website developer, who offers SEO, told us if we ever got onto the first page it would take six months. This is the standard line of many SEO providers.

The website that we are talking about was a local house cleaning service, Your Fresh Start. That website went to the first page within 3 days and has been there ever since. We have since closed that business and have been providing SEO services since we launched our site in May of 2007. We currently are ranked # 1 nationally on Google for 5 searches that include the word SEO in the query string.

It truly blows me away every time I think about our success. We tell you this not to brag, but to verify that we do know our business well. However, one keyword search has eluded me thus far and it is “Local SEO.’ Since local SEO is the cornerstone that this business is built upon we would like to be on the first page for this search.

We re-launched this website in mid April of this year using WordPress and we settled in a regular spot on the third page around # 35 and it stayed that way for two months. Then we re-evaluated the pages and tweaked our website. This adjustment had a positive impact. Then in June we started using forums that allows us to create Do Follow anchor text links that read Local SEO.

The website moved up the ranking for this keyword phrase and settled in at the # 17 position. Then in July we began to place links in every blog post that targeted our sales and services pages. Those anchor text links pointed to our other pages that we wanted to specifically target to increase there presence in the Google SERP’s nationally and locally.

Recently, we have actually flirted with the first page of Google landing temporarily at the #4 position. We eventually settled in at the #11. For our website to stay on the first page will indeed be a difficult task. It is because local SEO is written about often on authority blogs and Forums. These established websites have a huge advantage over a much newer website.

However, they are most likely not talking about proving SEO for local websites, as we do. When those in our industry talk about local SEO they are talking about free listings in the Google and Yahoo local business maps. This is a hot topic that when written about on authority blogs tends to bump our site down the list. So yes, we are flirting with the first page of results we are not there yet, but then we like a good challenge.

We highlighted the changes that we made in and effort to point out that SEO is never a one and done process. When we re-launched our website and did not get the results that we wanted we took another look to see what else could be done better. Some of what we tried was just fine tuning. Still other efforts were experiments based on knowledge that we gleaned from other SEO professionals.

This is why we recommend that you blog on other websites related to your industry. We consider it part of our continuing education. The placement of links in our blog posts was an adaptation of something that I read one day on Courtney Tuttle’s blog. I tweaked his suggestion to apply to our website and it has paid off. We have seen this effect across several keyword phrases in the SERP’s.

Do You Ask: Please Link To Our Blog?

April 18, 2008

I spend a fair amount of time on forums and I recently posted a title “The Mother Of All Linkbait.” I was letting everyone known that Cornwall SEO has a great post that included 78 articles on linkbait.

Since I hadn’t read them all, I revisited this post looking to glean some useful information. While mining these posts for quality tidbits I read this “ask your visitor to link to you blog.” Bingo, the lights went off in this marketers head.

We had just started including a “call to action” tagline in some of our more specific posts about SEO, as in “if you need help setting up a link building program call…” But not all posts were a good fit for this. I recently wrote some political based post where I felt a tagline would be tacky.

Then, I realized it would be very simple to ask for a link or a comment. The old sales person in me knows many sales are lost because the seller forgot to ask for the sale. Since, I put a tagline on all the non blog pages why not do the same on the blog?

So this post is about applying common sense, tried and true sales techniques to each blog post. I recommend that your try it and then visit us later and report the results.

We invite you to join the conversation and leave a comment. We also invite you to continue the conversation on your blog or perhaps use a trackback, or maybe even social bookmark this article, give it a Digg or Stumble it.

The Different Faces of SEO

April 13, 2008

There is a myriad of ways that you can describe the process of website optimization. There are the standard terms SEO or Search Engine Optimization.

But since we actually provide this service professionally we are more likely try to define a smaller niche within this industry. Like any good SEO we would rely on our keyword development skills to create long tails for our keyword phrases that define us.

Here are some of the many ways that we describe ourselves.
Some of us take an organic approach as in:

Organic SEO or Organic Search Engine Optimization, and others will add location into the mix, as with Tucson Search Engine Optimization.

Some will describe there skills to include:

Local SEO
Niche SEO
Solutions SEO
Business SEO
Small Business SEO
Geo-targeted SEO
Geo-targeting SEO
Real Estate SEO
Travel SEO
Holistic SEO
And to all of these you can change out the SEO for search engine optimization.

You could also market yourself as a positioning or ranking service. Perhaps, as someone who creates increased website traffic because that what our services do they produce more website visitors.

SEO is many things to many people but it is only about what can be done on a website. Many individuals consider link building as part of SEO as it has a direct impact on the search engine results page. However, since it is not something that is done on a website it is generally considered link building and not part of SEO. Some call link building SEM or search engine Marketing. We are part of this group.

So as you can see there are many niches under the umbrella of SEO. You can even take Geo-targeted approach as we do and break any of these groups by location. So while it may be near impossible to break onto the first page for SEO or search engine optimization it is possible to do so within any of these niches.

We invite you to join the conversation and leave a comment. We also invite you to continue the conversation on your blog or perhaps use a trackback, or maybe even social bookmark this article, give it a Digg or Stumble it.
