What Do You Want Your Website Visitor to DO?

July 21, 2008

When you talk with most website designers the first question that they ask is “What kind of look and feel do you want.” That is the last question that we ask our perspective design clients. The first question that we ask is this “what do you want your visitor to do on your website?”

This should not be overlooked. It comes down to this; is your website designer interested in your websites success or theirs. Website designers by whatever form of training that they have are not marketers. We have interns who are formally trained with MIS degrees and lack any marketing skills. Most web designers do not take an active role in the creation of the sites content.

We first define what the websites goal conversion is then we work back from there. Most websites have one basic goal that they want the visitor to accomplish for that visit to be considered a success.

Service based businesses primarily are attempting to generate a sales lead through a phone call or an email. They may have a secondary goal to sign up for a newsletter. The consultant or business coach may be after the newsletter sign up as their primary goal with a phone inquiry as a secondary goal. The blog owner may simply want you to make a comment.

As you can tell we left out the websites that are selling products online out of this discussion. The process is similar but since we don’t work with E-commerce sites we will not make any suggestion for this group, however, we believe that this group can benefit from this approach as well.

Once the ultimate goal has been established you can begin to construct your content to bring that visitor to a buying decision, even if that buying decision is only a phone call. How then do you accomplish this?

This is where you rely on a tried and true sales technique right out of sales 101. This process is known as a features and benefits presentation. You simply tell the visitor what you do and how it benefits them and then you ask for the sale. It’s really that simple. Now, let me ask you how many websites have you visited that have taken this approach?

You may be asking yourself why this isn’t done more often. The answer is basically this website designers are not generally marketers. They are skilled at code and not selling. We are first and foremost marketers who build websites and that give our clients a huge advantage.

We figure if the features and benefits approach is good enough for the automobile industry than its good enough for us. Think about it, when you go to the car dealer, what happens? They tell you about all of the cars new features. Then they explain how those features will benefit you, and finally they ask for the sale.

If your website has not been built with a features and benefits approach and doesn’t ask for the sale on each page then maybe it’s time for a change.

#4 out of 156,000,000

July 13, 2008

Our SEO practice is all about developing and exploiting niche opportunities. Since SEO is basically a numbers game, you want to target your keyword phrases that are actually being used, but that have a few competitors. It comes down to the fewer competitors the better.

So while we do well at landing this website on the first page of results for SEO related searches, these would not be considered competitive. That’s the whole purpose of what we are trying to achieve.

So while we do well at landing this website on the first page of results for SEO related searches, these would not be considered competitive. That’s the whole purpose of what we are trying to achieve.

So today, I read a question on a forum that I had never visited before. It asked “what is the most competitive keyword that you have ranked for?” I knew that we ranked high for the search “Do Follow List” but I never pay any attention to how many results came up on a Google search for this term.
Well, the answer is that we are #4 out of 156 Million search results… Wow!

All of those ahead of us have had 8 months to a year or more advance lead on us. So it say we are pleased would be an understatement. I am still a little bit in the clouds over this revelation.

We were able to accomplish this recuse we put in over 300 hours developing the list and marketing it effectively. The whole project was created as linkbait for the relaunching of our website and it has worked very well, to say that it exceeded our expectations would be an understatement.

The bottom line here is SEO is not an easy fix, but if you are willing to put in the effort you will succeed.

Got More Time Than Money? Try Help.com

June 7, 2008

I recently discovered this website while reading another blog. The blogs whole focus was about link building. I don’t remember the blog but , I did visit this website and used it and then quickly forgot all about www.help.com.

I rediscovered Help.com today while doing a Google search for ”Geo-targeted SEO.” This site has been ranking high on the first page, as in #1 and #2 for a couple of months for this search. I still check it daily because I still have a hard time believing that we are on the first page of Google for an SEO related search.

Usually it’s the same sites that are there, but today I clicked onto a different search result and landed on Help.com. I had forgotten about this website and that I had placed a free blurb about our business. There on the screen were several paragraphs about our business and the “Do Follow Link” on our website. Yes, I was pleasantly surprised.

I quickly opened a Word document and started writing this post. When you visit Help.com you will see in big bold letters “Start Here: Ask a question, post a rant, tell us your story.” So I told our story which lands on the first page of Google for an SEO related search. I call that Way cool. The website also has a Page Rank of 6.

I can’t say that I have noticed any traffic from the website. But I did pick up a high PR Do Follow backlink, and that’s not so bad, since there aren’t many of those available. The other great thing about this is that when you use a site like this to promote your website. When and if it does make it to the first page, you have knocked a competitor to the second page of results. You can often get on to the first page this way even when you can’t get your website there.

Niche SEO - A Success Story

May 26, 2008

In December of 2007 we were written-up in a local newspaper where we explained what a website needs to know to be successful. The president of a niche manufacturing company where I had once worked read the article and called.

He reasoned because I already knew his company, its products, and market, that we would be well suited to work on their website. What we found when we reviewed it was amazing. The website included 56 pages of which only 22 could actually be reached from the website. Of those 22 pages six of them were incoherent ramblings. That left 16 usable pages.

The website had a flash header on an industrial site that sells expensive equipment used by other manufactures. The home page included two videos and about 100 words of text. There was no SEO on the site at all. Little had changed in 8 years. They never got any email leads and were using PPC to generate traffic.

We knew that we had a very good chance of doing very well for three or four word searches for their products. When the site was re-launched, they quickly moved onto the Google’s first SERP for searches such as industrial dust equipment or industrial blasting equipment. In fact they are on Google’s first page over 15 times. Yes, traffic increased as well.

Recently, we had a meeting with this client to discuss some updates to the website. The owner informed me that the website is working. He stated “we are finally getting contacts from the website, something that we never did before.” I should note that when I got home I did a happy dance.

Finally, after eight years, a good clean design and solid SEO is producing results. So it just goes to show that a little quality SEO can go a long way for any niche manufacturer. The beauty of using long tail keyword phrases for this group is that these visitors are not casual “social media” visitors. No, just the opposite they are highly targeted visitors that need, want, and desire your products.

The real beauty for me is I have a long history with this company. They make products that are environmentally friendly and have been doing this for a long time, way back when it wasn’t popular. They are great people and their products can actually save lives. You see dust can be explosive and kills dozens every year in our nation.

Can Google’s search results be trusted?

May 4, 2008

We just did a search Google search for “niche SEO’ where we are usually in the number # 1 or #2 position bouncing back and forth with Aaron Wall’s seobook website. To our surprise another website www.seosearchbot.com was in the #1 position. So we visited the site.

The website lacked for content and was easy to read, as it is one of those link directories. We used the Ctrl f command and discovered that the word niche didn’t appear on the page.

We then ventured to check out the pages source code. We did another Ctrl f search and again we came up with no results. So why did this website appear in the search results? Does anyone have a reasonable explanation?

Well, before this even got posted the site dropped to the #4 position. I just don’t know how it ever ranked for niche SEO when the word niche never appears!

Niche SEO – What a concept

May 4, 2008

We live in Tucson, Arizona, which is a website marketing backwater of sorts. Most business owners that I speak with at my many networking events have little knowledge of the services that we provide.

I ran a local SEO meet-up group but we were lucky if 5 people showed up. So it’s not easy to find a group to talk shop with. Desperate to mingle with others in the industry I traveled the 125 miles north to Phoenix to attend an SEO Meet-up group there.

It was run by a woman from New Mexico. She holds the Arizona franchise for a training academy and travels here monthly to provide training and to market herself through this group.

I was especially thrilled by what I had learned at this gathering. The focus of the meeting was to share our favorite SEO tools and website. It’s always nice to come across useful resources, especially the ones that are free.

In a private conversation after the meeting I discovered that this woman had been providing SEO services and training for seven years. Which is to say, a way long time in this industry.

I mentioned that we specialized in niche SEO and she expressed amazement at what she just heard. The concept of Niche SEO seemed about as far away as Yuma, or her native New Mexico. She explained that she had never heard of niche SEO before today. Actually, I wasn’t sure who was more surprised me or her.

Our version of niche SEO is exactly what the name implies. We offer SEO to niche industries. It’s merely a more focused approach to SEO. We simply go where the competition isn’t. After all, isn’t this what keyword search and long tails are all about? It’s about finding niches that are related to our client’s products or services that others are not using.

Does your business have niche products or services? Then we are your small business SEO Solution in Tucson.
