Is There Such A Thing As A Perfect Link ?

Is There Such A Thing As A Perfect Link ?

That seems like a reasonable question to ask. After all there has been so much conflicting information written about links. We figured that since our audience comes here for small business SEO solutions they could use some clarification on the subject.

The perfect link from our perspective is:

A perfect link would be from a site with high Page Rank. The problem here is that many of our readers don’t understand PR. So here’s the skinny on PR. It is a grade that Google places on websites that correlates to trust. The scale goes from n/a through 10, with 10 being the highest score. You can find out the PR of any website if you are using a Google toolbar with Page Rank enabled.

That’s the simple answer for PR. So let’s look at a few other aspects of the perfect link.

The perfect link should offer some benefit to the person that is actually clicking on that link. So it is a good idea that the link should be industry specific or related to your website in some way. A good example of this is a doctor in Tucson linking to a doctor in Chicago. It should also include the targeted keyword phrase related to the site that it is pointed to in the anchor. In this case you might want to link to a page about flu prevention. That link then might read “flu prevention.”

That links should be “Do Follow” thus it will pass link juice. You control this on your website, but you can not control it on another website. If the link is what as know as “No follow” it will have no impact on search rankings but may generate traffic to your website.

The perfect link has to be “Do Follow,”and It certainly would be nice if that link came from a high PR page.

What’s your perfect link?

Website Are Like High Maintenence Mates

February 6, 2009

I have recently suggested that successful websites are like a high maintenance friend. From my perspective this is so true. A high maintenance woman or man demands a lot of attention, and especially attention to detail. A website that acquires high search engine rankings and traffic requires similar attention and needs lots of it to continue to stay productive.

A high maintenance woman or man requires daily attention, as well, to maintain a successful relationship. If you are willing to pay the price a relationship with a high maintenance person can be very rewarding and seldom dull.

A successful website is no different. It demands your time and effort that goes way beyond checking emails or traffic stats. The point here is that if you want a successful relationship with your website you have to be prepared to pay the price of your time and money?

Keeping your visitors happy is also important, so you need to make sure your site is user friendly. Many a potential customer will never reach your website because of slow loading pages. You have about two seconds to accomplish this. I call it the Google effect. Web surfers are so used to Google providing search results instantly. They then expect this quickness from all websites all the time. We have all experienced this. You do your Google search and you see a promising website. You then click onto that link and wait and wait some more. Then you simply give up and try another site.

The problem isn’t limited to small business websites that may have been home built. They actually often load very quickly because they don’t have many people visiting at the same time or they aren’t loaded with a lot of graphics. Retail e-commerce sites are notoriously slow loading for a variety of reasons. There are literally billions of dollars lost annually due to slow loading pages.

The more web savvy your visitor the quicker they leave. Imagine if your website is slow loading for a cable connection, and then imagine how slow the process is for DSL, dial-up service, or for someone using a notebook or a Wi-Fi connection.

The moral of this story is, don’t loose your visitor before they actually see your website.

Winning In Tough Economic Environments - Part 3 Remove Distraction

December 30, 2008

This is a feature that we are implementing with each post. It is here because we provide small business SEO solutions all across Arizona. At this time we would like to thank our friends and clients for their support. If you have landed here looking for our Internet marketing or SEO services in Lake Havasu City, or Kingman then please follow this SEO link.

Winning In Tough Economic Environments - Part 3 Remove Distraction

Very early on in my website marketing career I began to notice things on many websites that I did not think were very good ideas. I was determined to find out whether my gut instincts were correct or not. I knew this would involve eye tracking studies. I needed to understand how our eyes react to websites and how this affects their ability to convert visitors to customers.

I was not satisfied just to increase traffic through the SEO process. My goal has always been to improve the conversions from visitor to customer. This is the true measure of a successful website and something that is not part of search engine optimization. I basically set out to prove my theories and to provide a better service for our customers. We would later call this approach Holistic SEO, because we were focusing on the big picture and not merely on increased traffic.

About that time I discovered Stompernet, while there I watched a video on eye tracking. Unfortunately, I could not locate that video on their site when I did research for this post. What it revealed is that your eyes bounce around a web page hundreds if not thousands of times while you are visiting any website. However, you are not generally aware of this process.

There is one good example of how this works and that you have likely experienced. Many free email providers pay for their services by presenting ads that are plastered around the body of the email. Often these are animated videos with moving avatars and such. They are designed this way to get your attention and they do, often in a very irritating fashion.

I have used this example when conversing at business mixers to make my point about removing distractions. I will list some elements that might be hindering your website. These are some of the recommendations that we provide when we are presenting a clients website review.

Remove as many of these distractions as possible

You must remove any and all movement – Your web page should be a static presentation, if you want your readers to be able to focus on your message. Dull and some what boring pages will actually convert better if they include a quality sale presentation.

There are some really cool features that use a coding method known as Ajax. This allows your site to present a moving banner across your page. It looks really cool. But this movement will cause your eyes to want to focus on the movement rather than on the text being presented. Do you want your website to be cool or effective?

Go easy with images – Many website designers fall back on images to carry a web page they do this for a multitude of reasons. Often it is due to lack of content so they compensate by including images. It is a common mistake to let your images do the selling rather than building a well thought out sales presentation.

Another drawback is that images can make your pages so slow to load that your site may be abandoned before they ever load. This certainly is not a good thing. Also if you want to use images they should be large enough to be clearly visible. You will want to avoid thumbnail images. Remember, text in images can not be read by the search engines.

There is only one time that we would recommend using an image. It is when it represents a product or service that is being presented on that page. We often build B2B sites that only include the header image and product images. Everything else focuses on making the sale.

We recommend avoiding the use of videos on the home page. It is distracting to be reading content that is divided by a video box.

Some other common distractions that are frequently used on web pages

Keep the use of multiple fonts to a minimum - Also stick with the same format from page to page. Don’t use a three column approach on the home page and then switch to a two column look on other pages. Consistency must be maintained from page to page this speaks volumes about your business ethic.

Avoid using excessive background colors to empathize your content - The standard recommendation is to use bright colors. This often is distracting and can make the content harder to read. You should consider using black text over a white background. This will make your website easier for most to read. Strongly consider color schemes that are subtle. Many individuals are sight challenged. So keep them in mind, if they can’t read your text they will leave. This is a common an user experience.

Never, I mean Never… Use the color bright red. This an emergency color. It represents problems or stop on a sub-conscious level. These things really do make a big difference. Much of what I have mentioned goes against what you may have read from other marketers. The graphic design crowd believes in heavy images and colors that pop. These are designed to catch people’s attention and should be used in outdoor advertising. However, when someone lands at your website you have already accomplished the “getting their attention.” You want to keep that attention by providing the information that was being sought. When someone visits your B2B site they are not generally looking for a wow factor. They have a want, need or desire to be filled.

Is your website distracting your visitors?

Another Look at Google Analytics

Another Look at Google Analytics

No this article does not cover all the great new features that have been added to Analytics recently. What I am going to suggest that you start paying more attention to time on site and more specifically time on each page stats. They will reveal much about the quality of your content and whether it meets the visitors expectations.

This site, of ours, is a hybrid of sorts in that it includes 14 static pages where we sell our services and tell our story. Then there is the blog that has a completely different audience. So in many ways this site is two in one. They both serve completely different purposes and audiences. All of the static pages use a sales funnel designed to elicit a buying decision. The blog, however, loosely applies these principals. Its pages offer mostly reference material and information.

What I am looking for on my static page is an average of about 7 minutes per page. If this drops below this level and stays there for 30 days or so I would then consider updating that pages content.

When examining time on page stats for the blog there are many more factors to consider. Was the page brief or detailed? Did the post include links to other sites? What was the topic of the post? If you study these time on page stats you can eventually develop a feel for what your readers are interested in and you can then make adjustments.

Average time on pages this is a real indicator if people like your site and its content. Average time on site is nice but mostly useless. There are other considerations as well. It is important to determine where your traffic is being generated from. If you social bookmark your blog posts you can expect these pages to have a considerably lower time on page stats.

Best Free SEO Tool Available Today!

December 10, 2008

Recently, I was doing some research on the web for a new SEO/SEM Blog list that we are creating. I started off by visiting Algojunkie, a site we recently discovered while working on our Do Follow List. They had a post about a really cool website SEO analyzer tool. That link took me to the SEO workers website. Once I got there I recalled that I had used this tool sometime ago and I had forgotten about it. What was I thinking, why I didn’t bookmark such a great site? This site is SEO Workers.

So without hesitation I gave the tool a whirl by entering my sites url. I thought one SEO website getting analyzed by another was too good an opportunity to pass up. I am sure glad that I availed myself of the free service. It is so cool and useful that I had to write about it. There is so much junk available that when something good comes around I feel obligated to share.

This is a summary of what we found doing a check on our website. We eliminated the stuff that is outdated. That outdated material was a little experiment where we ran our page titles and descriptions long. So if your paying attention, this wasn’t a good idea. We shortened things up and are doing much better now. Yes, we are not adverse to experimenting, just not in a black hat kind of way.

This process is broken down into 13 groups.

Here is the summary of our website.

General – This provides the basic server information.

Meta Tags – The information presented here was about 2 months out of date, but accurate for the time period.

Meta Tag Analysis – It gave our site a title relevancy score of 100% and 97% for description relevancy.

Web Page Analysis – No errors noted

The Page Displayed Within Search Engine Results – Info provided was based on old information.

Keywords found in the Anchor Tags – Nothing specific here.

Keywords Found in the Image Alt Attribute Text – The site lacks images so this section did not apply.

Keywords found on page – This section I believe is mostly useless because it deals with keyword density. It breaks keywords down into one, two or three word keyword phrases. This will require a closer analysis to see if any gems might be un-earthed.

URLs found in the page – I was surprised to find a podpress link that I will have to run down, as I was not aware of this and don’t use this plugin.

Headers returned form – Nothing caught my eye here.

Spell Checker – Did not use but would recommend that you do.

The last two items are strictly marketing for books and an SEO university.

The cost for this detailed report is a mere five bucks, donation. You can opt for the free report. The choice is yours. For most website it is the best 5 bucks you’ll ever spend.

Are you ready to implement what you learned in your analysis?

Can Google’s Search Results Be Trusted?

November 14, 2008

We just did a search Google search for “niche SEO’ where we are usually in the number # 1 or #2 position bouncing back and forth with Aaron Wall’s seobook website. To our surprise another website www.seosearchbot.com was in the #1 position. So we visited the site.

The website lacked content and was easy to read, as it is one of those link directories. We used the Ctrl F command and discovered that the word niche didn’t appear on the page.

We then ventured to check out the pages source code. We did another Ctrl F search and again we came up with no results. So why did this website appear in the search results? Does anyone have a reasonable explanation?

Well, before this even got posted the site dropped to the #4 position. I just don’t know how it ever ranked for niche SEO when the word niche never appears!

We will continue to investigate and keep you updated.

We invite you to join the conversation and leave a comment. We also invite you to continue the conversation on your blog or perhaps use a trackback, or maybe even social bookmark this article, give it a Digg or Stumble it.

What Do You Want Your Website Visitor To Do?

November 11, 2008

When you talk with most website designers the first question that they ask is “What kind of look and feel do you want your website to have?” That is the last question that we ask our perspective design clients. The first question that we ask is this “what do you want your visitor to do on your website?”

This should not be overlooked. It comes down to this; is your website designer interested in your websites success or theirs. Website designers by whatever form of training that they have are not marketers. We have interns who are formally trained with MIS degrees and lack any marketing skills. Most web designers do not take an active role in the creation of the sites content.

We first define what the websites goal conversion is then we work back from there. Most websites have one basic goal that they want the visitor to accomplish for that visit to be considered a success.

Service based businesses primarily are attempting to generate a sales lead through a phone call or an email. They may have a secondary goal to sign up for a newsletter. The consultant or business coach may be after the newsletter sign up as their primary goal with a phone inquiry as a secondary goal. The blog owner may simply want you to make a comment.

As you can tell we left out the websites that are selling products online out of this discussion. The process is similar but since we don’t work with E-commerce sites we will not make any suggestion for this group, however, we believe that this group can benefit from this approach as well.

Once the ultimate goal has been established you can begin to construct your content to bring that visitor to a buying decision, even if that buying decision is only a phone call. How then do you accomplish this?

This is where you rely on a tried and true sales technique right out of sales 101. This process is known as a features and benefits presentation. You simply tell the visitor what you do and how it benefits them and then you ask for the sale. It’s really that simple. Now, let me ask you how many websites have you visited that have taken this approach?

You may be asking yourself why this isn’t done more often. The answer is basically this; website designers are not generally marketers. They are skilled at code and not selling. We are first and foremost marketers who build websites and that gives our clients a huge advantage.

We figure if the features and benefits approach is good enough for the automobile industry than its good enough for us. Think about it, when you go to the car dealer, what happens? They tell you about all of the cars new features. Then they explain how those features will benefit you, and finally they ask for the sale.

If your website has not been built with a features and benefits approach and doesn’t ask for the sale on each page then maybe it’s time for a change.

We invite you to join the conversation and leave a comment. We also invite you to continue the conversation on your blog or perhaps use a trackback, or even maybe social bookmark this article, give it a Digg or Stumble it.

Duplicate Content - Don’t Worry Be Happy

November 10, 2008

There has been so much written over the years about duplicate content penalties from Google. I always view these kinds of things with a healthy dose of skepticism. I’m one of those kinds of persons we says “seeing is believing.” If I can not verify personally through trial and error then I remain skeptical about certain SEO beliefs or theories.

I know page titles are important not only because I have read this hundreds of times over, but I have proven the validity through real world application. Lately, I have given a lot of consideration to the effects of website scraping and its effects on scrapped websites. So when in doubt I have found if you have a questions about Google, its best to go to Google.

So I visited the webmaster central blog looking for answers and indeed I found my answer. It was “don’t worry, be happy.” their words not mine. It seems that duplicate content isn’t the big problem that it is made out to be. If you would like to read the article at Webmaster Central you might find it an eye opener.

Don’t worry be happy!

Niche SEO – What A Concept

September 7, 2008

We live in Tucson, Arizona, which is a website marketing backwater of sorts. Most business owners that I speak with at my many networking events have little knowledge of the services that we provide.

I ran a local SEO meet-up group but we were lucky if 5 people showed up. So it’s not easy to find a group to talk shop with. Desperate to mingle with others in the industry I traveled the 125 miles north to Phoenix to attend an SEO Meet-up group there.

It was run by a woman from New Mexico. She holds the Arizona franchise for a training academy and travels here monthly to provide training and to market herself through this group.

I was especially thrilled by what I had learned at this gathering. The focus of the meeting was to share our favorite SEO tools and website. It’s always nice to come across useful resources, especially the ones that are free.

In a private conversation after the meeting I discovered that this woman had been providing SEO services and training for seven years. Which is to say, a way long time in this industry.

I mentioned that we specialized in niche SEO and she expressed amazement at what she just heard. The concept of Niche SEO seemed about as far away as Yuma, or her native New Mexico. She explained that she had never heard of niche SEO before today. Actually, I wasn’t sure who was more surprised me or her.

Our version of niche SEO is exactly what the name implies. We offer SEO to niche industries. It’s merely a more focused approach to SEO. We simply go where the competition isn’t. After all, isn’t this what keyword search and long tails are all about? It’s about finding niches that are related to our client’s products or services that others are not using.

Does your business have niche products or services?

We invite you to join the conversation and leave a comment. We also invite you to continue the conversation on your blog or perhaps use a trackback, or maybe even social bookmark this article, give it a Digg or Stumble it.

Are You Part Of The Conversation?

July 27, 2008

It never stops amazing me that so many bloggers miss the opportunity to engage their readers with their blogs. For us the blog is part of our social media efforts. We believe the blog should rule social media. Many individuals seem to spend copious amounts of time on other social sites like Digg, Twitter, or Facebook, and they overlook the social benefits of their own blogs. The small business owner working an SEO and website marketing program doesn’t have time for this but many can find time to work their blog for all its worth. You don’t need a high paid consulting service to apply these few simple techniques.

You see it all the time a blog owner makes a post and never returns to the post except to moderate the comments. The trouble is that all they do is clean up the spam. If you want social media to work for you then practice it on your blog. Respond to your commenter’s and you might just see a huge increase in comments. You might not but at least you show that you care. I see comments left behind that ask a question. However, the question goes unanswered. So there is no conversation just a post and some replies.

What do you think the chances are that this commenter will be back to your blog when they see that you didn’t care enough to respond. This is where you can really loose by not answering questions. You never know if the person asking the question was going to follow up and give you a shout on their blog with a trackback.

I have personally considered following up a post with an expanded version or maybe a post with a different twist. So I have left a follow up comment trying to get a better understanding of what the author meant. This has happened maybe a dozen times with no response.

I call this lost opportunity. Yet, we see this behavior as the norm rather than the excepted way of doing business. This misses the whole point of blogging. Now, I don’t respond to all comments if I get a bunch of similar comments all in the same day. But if it’s a period of slow commenting I will respond to all comments that are more than “nice blog.” We also take the time to respond to the detailed comments with a personal email. It all about putting the social in Social Media.

We invite you to join the conversation and leave a comment. We also invite you to continue the conversation on your blog or perhaps use a trackback, or maybe even social bookmark this article, give it a Digg or Stumble it.

#4 out of 156,000,000

July 13, 2008

Our SEO practice is all about developing and exploiting niche opportunities. Since SEO is basically a numbers game, you want to target your keyword phrases that are actually being used, but that have only a few competitors. It comes down to the fewer competitors the better.

So while we do well at landing this website on the first page of results for SEO related searches, these would not be considered competitive. That’s the whole purpose of what we are trying to achieve.

So today, I read a question on a forum that I had never visited before. It asked “what is the most competitive keyword that you have ranked for?” I knew that we ranked high for the search “Do Follow List” but I never pay any attention to how many results came up on a Google search for this term. Well, the answer is that we are #4 out of 156 Million search results… Wow!

All of those ahead of us have had 8 months to a year or more advance lead on us. So to say that we are pleased would be an understatement. I am still a little bit in the clouds over this revelation.

We were able to accomplish this because we put in over 300 hours developing the list and marketing it effectively. The whole project was created as linkbait for the relaunching of our website and it has worked very well.

The bottom line here is SEO is not an easy fix, but if you are willing to put in the effort you will succeed.
