I Could Not Believe This One

May 8, 2011

Welcome to the Google Places SEO Citations blog at Tucson SEO Solutions.

This blog covers local SEO which is dominated by Google, Google Places and the need for citations. The blog also covers just about any thing related to Google search results and related topics. I hope that you might glean some useful resources while you are here.

I Could Not Believe This One

This was first posted back in 2008.

Yesterday, I was contacted by a former client that was now representing another company. They were using some SEO guy out of New Jersey. What he told me and I later verified was amazing. Originally, I was skeptical so I visited the sites in question and verified his story.

This SEO guy presented himself as an expert in the moving business and he has several clients in the industry that I could confirm. What he was doing was adding links on the sites that he was working on for his other clients sites. I counted a whole bunch of links that were going to other movers that should not have been there. My suggestion was to fire this guy on the spot. I just shake my head every time I see something like this. How did he imagine that he could get away with this?

Everything that I do for a client I do it as if I am doing it for this site. I have very high standards, unfortunately this industry is full of those that lack ethics. Everyday, I see scams and garbage SEO offerings, but this one really blew me away. One of the links was actually embedded in the text of a specific topic. The assumption was the link pointed to another page on this site that had more details about this topic. The link actually went to another movers site in another city.

I have a hard time understanding how someone can take money to do a job like this and then do something like this. The problem is that these things happen all to often and it destroys trust. Trust is a key component in this industry. People pay us and trust that we know what we are doing. But they also trust us with access to one of their primary business assets, their websites. This man destroyed that trust and that makes me upset. These things give even the good guys a bum rap.

Google Places SEO Means More Opportunities

January 14, 2011

Welcome to the Google Places SEO Services blog at Tucson SEO Solutions.

Before I get into today’s post I want to recognize and welcome our visitors from the Arizona communities of Lake Havasu, Bullhead City, or Parker. I also wanted you to know that you are here because I have specifically targeted you and your businesses need to rank well in the Google Places search results. I hope that you find this information useful. And if you need Google Places SEO services that you will consider Tucson SEO Solutions.

Google Places SEO Means More Opportunities

I am in the process of re-branding this blog to primarily focus on Google Places Search and how it is impacting the local search environment. Out of curiosity I did a search for website marketing. I had noticed that over the years that this was not a very productive keyword phrase to go after for me. I have been slowly been removing the word website from the anchor text of links where ever possible. So I was wondering how this phrase, website marketing Tucson, was doing in the Google rankings.

Below is a screen shot of what I was referring too.

As you can see, Tucson SEO Solutions still holds down the top two positions with Google. And the third position is occupied by two of our videos. Thus we hold down the top three positions in Tucson. But this is more about an ego boost rather than a solid traffic producing search. That is why I am transitioning away from it.

Since Google Places search also shows a mix of local and national results when a search is completed without expressing a local intent I did another search. This time I searched for just website marketing.

In this search the site ranked third. Now, I will admit that very few people in Tucson will ever search for website marketing from Tucson. I also know that of this group 60 – 80% of searches currently do not express a local intent. Now, I am able to get in front of this small group. Even with these changes this is a slow producing phrase.

This example also should act as a warning of sorts. Yes, as I have described you may be able to to change a large number of links that you have used. This is especially on social media sites with blogs and forums. But if your website will be requiring hundreds of links per page you will want to get it right the first time as the process of reclaiming your links is a boring and time consuming process.

Don’t please misunderstand me I encourage you to develop long tail keyword phrases. However, the traffic is often dismal to no existent. This can also pose a problem if you have a few hundred backlinks that read local internet marketing Phoenix and you re-purposed the page to target local internet Tucson. Google is known to give a preference to anchor text.

This Google tendency to place importance to the anchor text means that you might still be ranking for the original phrase. So in this case the web page may still be ranking for the previously targeted phrase. And sometimes your page continues to rank even though the word no longer be appearing on the page. If there are lots of link still out there with anchor text it may take a while before you no longer are ranking for the old phrase. This is especially true for long tails.

If you are a regular reader of this blog you will likely be tiring of reading about this advantage. But I can’t help myself I want everyone, especially the casual reader, to understand the importance of Places Search. What applies here in Tucson also applies in the northwest Arizona towns of Lake Havasu, Bullhead City, or Parker.

However, this advantage usually is limited to the top sites in most markets. Thus ranking well in the Google Places search rankings is now more important than ever.

Craigslist Launched A Search Engine Optimization Career!

January 7, 2011

Welcome to the Google Places SEO blog at Tucson SEO Solutions.

Craigslist Launched A Search Engine Optimization Career!

This post was originally written back in 2007.

Craigslist helped launch our SEO career, yes it’s true. We had had a lot of success using Craigslist to market our organically grown plant business back in 2005 and 2006. However, we could not overcome a severe drought that has gripped the desert southwest were we live for several years.

We closed that business and took the summer off to rest and reflect on our future. With a new source of income needed, as the autumn months approached, I called upon our past experience. Running a janitorial business. We knew that commercial services were not the route that we wanted to take.

So I chose to open, a professional house cleaning service. What we experienced using Craigslist was a race to become the lowest priced vendor asked to clean homes that hadn’t been cleaned in years. That was not the vision we had for my business.

I observed that none of my Craigslist competitors had a website to link to in their ads. That’s when the lights went off… So to speak, in my head… “If only we had a professional website that we could link to in our ads” there we could explain how dependable we are and why our services were worth a premium price.

The problem was that there was no money for a professional website to be designed. When like any good entrepreneurs we realized that bartering was our only option. Finally, a designer agreed to exchange his services for ours. However, his time table was not in sync with ours and we needed a website now.

Our solution was a one page free geo-cities website from Yahoo. The site was up in an hour or two. Now, it was time to visit Craigslist to place a free ad that included a link to the new one page website.

My phone rang early the next morning, the caller explained I am on your website and I would like to set up an appointment for a consultation. We agreed to work together and this couple became my most lucrative client. This is our story of Craigslist launching an SEO career? I knew that day this Internet thing was where we were headed!

The rest is history!

Update 01/01/2011: I ended up taking that one page website to a number one ranking for my primary keyword phrase Tucson House Cleaning Service. That lead to the professionally built site that landed on the first page of the Google results on day three after the launch.

I soon realized I had a new career and launched Tucson SEO Solutions in May of 2007. It landed on the first page of the Google results for its primary keyword phrase Tucson SEO. It soon reached the number one position and has never lost it since.

The original site was absolutely free. I used a Microsoft program to build the site. They through in  a free domain name and one years hosting. When I told people that it was a free site they were totally amazed. And here I am several years later and still going strong. It just goes to show when there is a will there is a way!.

Google Places And SEO Forums

December 15, 2010

Welcome to the Google Places SEO blog at Tucson SEO Solutions.

Before I get into today’s post I want to recognize and welcome our visitors from the Arizona communities of Holbrook or Winslow.   Please know that you are here because I have specifically targeted you and your businesses need to rank well in the Google Places search results. I hope that you find this information useful.

Google Places And SEO Forums

When Google recently rolled out its Places Search I saw the writing scribbled upon the wall. Google had changed the game of SEO dramatically. Local was now the center of the search engine universe. Fortunately, I am a Local SEO provider and acted quickly to re-brand my blog as the Google Places SEO blog at Tucson SEO Solutions.

I would also re-focus the sites purpose to emphasize business map listings (think Google Places here.) In the process I walked away from from several of my core markets. This would require both on and off page optimization changes. The on page optimization is still an ongoing process but much has already been completed.

The on page work is actually the easiest part of this process. While none of this is difficult work, it is a rather time consuming process. It will require that I change and re-brand thousands of links. Now, this is where I get to the SEO Forums part of this story.

This process requires that I find and re-purpose each and every link where possible.  Now, I had previously used SEO Forums extensively. At one time, I actually did a case study on the effectiveness of using them exclusively for link building. The study wanted to determine if forums were an effective tool for acquiring higher ranking. In my study one  website was related to the forums being used. The other website was completely unrelated to SEO as it was an OEM.

I used SEO Forums as the market niche. Thus I signed up with every SEO Forum that I could find. My database is full of  these types of sites. So everyday for the last several days I have been on at least 3 or 4 of them.

As I am re-branding my links I will usually check in to see what the Buzz is today. I make it a point to add something to ongoing discussions. It’s part of that Scratch My Back Marketing thing that I’m always talking about.

I expected to see a lively discussion or about Google Places, Citations, or Places Search. It wasn’t till I had reached the third forum when I paused to take note of the silence. I had scrolled through three different SEO Forums first pages. What struck me as odd was that there were no new or ongoing discussions about the biggest thing in SEO in years. The silence was deafening.

Now, I’m sure there are lots of forums that are having lively useful conversations I just haven’t visited them yet. I felt as if I was experiencing some kind of SEO time warp. The focus was on the same old same old of SEO forums. Still talking as if nothing had changed and links is still the obsession.

I thought it was so weird I stopped what I was doing, commenting on a forum, and started to write this post. I wanted to talk about the effects of website traffic volumes. I had also wanted to discuss citations. But not today or anytime this week. But hea, I’m am still in the B’s in my database eventually I land on a better and more active forum. I just never thought that I’d have to wait so long.

Homeland Security Closing Websites

December 13, 2010

Welcome to the Google Places SEO blog at Tucson SEO Solutions.

Before I get into today’s post I want to recognize and welcome our visitors from the Arizona communities of Gilbert and Avondale. I wanted you to know that you are here because I have specifically targeted you and your businesses need to rank well in the Google Places search results. I hope that you find this information useful.

Homeland Security Closing Websites

I found this story a bit scary when I first started seeing it appear all over the internet. I had no idea that the Homeland Security did such things as taking down websites. This one had a real wow OMG! feel to it for me. I first noticed updates appearing on Twitter so I decided to check into this story.

I first thought what the heck is Homeland Security doing taking down websites. I thought they had gone after Wikileaks or jihad sites. So I was surprised that it was a matter of copyright infringement. As a publisher who has their content ripped off on a regular basis infringement issues are important to me.

But having Homeland Security get involved seems like a waste of resources to me. Please keep us safe and let other agencies do this work was my reaction.  As the story goes they took down about 70 sites that were using a .com address. Unfortunately, these websites just moved to a .net or .info address and most were back in business extremely quickly.

Now, this all happened about a week ago and I have not heard anything since the first updates started appearing on blogs and on Twitter. This kind of things really personally bums me out. I am not bothered that they went after these sites but why did they use Homeland Security to do the job? I want them on the border and watching those who would harm us. Somehow copyright infringement cases seem like a waste of resources.

And as many others have pointed out what did they accomplish here. So they temporarily shut down these sites big deal. Didn’t they know about redirects. This is kinda scary when you consider this agency is in charge of keeping us safe from the bad guys.
