Where People Go When Google Fails
This was first posted back in mid June of 2010 just a few months ago. A lot has changed between then and now! In version 2 I explore how this story might be different had it occurred today.
I am an internet marketing SEO guy located in Tucson Arizona so my conversations are often about different aspects of search engine marketing. So I was a little bit amazed by what I learned today about what people do when Google does not provide them with the results that they want.
It all started at home when I had a very interesting conversation with my honey this afternoon. Geri has had a desire for Fish and Chips lately and she was searching a restaurant that served them. Now, keep in mind we live in Tucson, Arizona where fish and chips are not a staple as we are nowhere close to being near water in our desert habitat.
Her search turned out to be a bit frustrating for her. She started out using Google to do her search, but that didn’t work for her. The first page of the Google results was fruitless. So she then tried using the Microsoft search engine, Bing.
This turned out far better for her. She noted that she had to go to page two before she located a restaurant that serves fish and chips locally. I thought wow she is really serious about fish and chips to have used two different search engines.
The down side of this find was that it would require a 30 – 45 ride out to a suburban community that is on Tucson’s far North side. She was not familiar with this area as it is a relatively new development.
But there are no freeways to hop on from where we live to get there. This adventure would require the use of some of busiest surface streets in the metro area.
Geri, was surprised that Google didn’t provide her with the answer that she was looking for. I was surprised a s well but for a different reason. I was surprised that her second choice was Bing.
Shortly thereafter, I found a post that linked to an article about where people go when Google fails to meet their search requirements. The article was produce by Chitika. This company offers an internet marketing platform and does a whole lot of research about internet marketing.
The study indicated that Yahoo is by far the first choice when Google fails to produce the desired results. Yahoo is also my standard second choice as well. What got my attention is the third choice in this study was Ask.com and not Bing. I found this to be very interesting and not at all what I had expected.
Apparently, I wasn’t the only one surprised by this finding. The folks doing the research had expected that Bing would be far ahead of Ask but that wasn’t how it all played out. In the article the researchers did not speculate why they got the results that they did.

As I noted in the beginning of this post a lot has changed in a few months. Yahoo and Bing are now YaBing or is that BingYa? Yep, Bing and Yahoo results are now being provided by Bing. Resistance is futile!
And Google is now providing Instant results. In Geri’s case, if her second choice was Yahoo or Bing it would not matter today. A search presented today that started out using Tucson produces an instant suggestion of Tucson Water. I keep typing when and when I get to Tucson Fish I am instantly offered Tucson Fishing. Still not what I was looking for. But in the drop down suggestions Tucson Fish and Chips appeared.
Of course this story is only relevant if she started her search on the Google home page where the instant option is available. So where you begin your search query may dramatically influence your search behavior and the search results.
Here is how I explained things earlier tonight. You see, I rank # 1 for local internet marketing services in Google’s results. However, not so much for local internet marketing. I’m hoping that searchers will include services in their query. The problem happens when they get the phrase local internet marketing entered in the query box on Google’s home page the instant word option offered was association.
The drop down box offers 3 more choices. They include “by Yodle Inc” “for your small business” and “blog.” There is no option or suggestion that reads local internet marketing services. This I believe will negatively impact those long tail phrases that may not be suggested by Google.
What I am interested in finding out is this. I wish that I knew how many searches are still done from Google’s home page. This is the group that Google’s Instant will impact. As for me I seldom ever use the Google home page as my browser and the Google toolbar provide me with three search options already.

When you are talking about SEO the conversation always gets around to building backlinks. Especially, when you realize that they are the foundation to Google’s algorithm. Just about anyone in the know, knows that there are about 200 or so elements to Google’s algorithm, and that links or backlinks make up a big portion of these.
Backlinks is the area where most people have the biggest problems. The problem is that it takes a lot of time to build backlinks properly. It’s the properly part that causes so much difficulty for many. As with any question regarding SEO I always turn to Google for my answers.

A Record Breaking Performance
Keyword Wise!
In this post I provide my monthly Google rankings report for the keyword phrases that I target in Tucson, in Arizona, and nationally. I am going to announce what might be some kind of SEO feat that might actually have set a record.
I specialize in long tail keyword phrases. And it seems as if the recent Google algorithm change that is being called The May Day Update has really benefited my website. This update started at the end of April of 2010, thus the May Day name.
Many websites reported a significant drop in traffic for long tail keyword phrases in early May. Google later confirmed this update through their spokesperson, Matt Cutts. The update primarily affected long tail keyword phrases. It had a big impact on many e-commerce sites.
This site ranking report pulled in early May showed that it ranked for 108 keyword phrases. That jumped to 178 keyword phrases in the June 2010 report. It jumped again with the recently completed report from July 01, 2010.
Tucson SEO Solutions ranked for an amazing 295 keyword phrases on the first page of the Google results as of July 01, 2010…
Many naysayers will say that many of these keyword phrases are not very competitive and they would be right. They also tend to overlook things like the search for “Do Follow Lists.” This search produced 1.15 Billion results! That’s right B as in Billion.
Many of these searches simply add an “s” to a word in a phrase. That one letter is often the difference between being on the first page of the Google results and not. Another example here is the keyword phrase Local SEO. It was buried way down page two of the results. However, SEO Local ranked in the fourth spot on the first page.
Also not that I refer to we in this report, but Tucson SEO Solutions has basically been just me, Urban, since early 2009. My “honey” and business partner, Geri left to work elsewhere during the economic downturn. Then she became critically ill and in need of a liver transplant.
So basically, these results represent the work of one person. I do almost everything manually. My only automated process is the use of the password manager, RoboForm. I don’t even bother using blog commenting for links. I did a case study of its effectiveness and I found that it produced extremely ROI.
The key to my success has been the adoption of the principals enshrined in Scratch My Back Marketing. I began using this concept back on 01/01/2009. Back then the site ranked for 19 keyword phrases. I didn’t target for link building, or internet or website marketing which I now do. I almost strictly focused on Local SEO.
What really amazes me is this. I did a website upgrade that went badly and parts of the website were down off on. The blogs home page was unavailable for the last week of the month or so.

178 Keyword Phrases ranking on the first page.
121 Keyword Phrases ranking # 1.
69 Keyword Phrases ranking both # 1 and # 2.
19 Keyword Phrases were 2 pages rank.

We all ready rank one page on the first page and we have another page that is indexed for Scottsdale SEO. I made changes to that page but they have yet to show up in the search results.
I knew going into this battle that this would not be easy, but I like a good challenge!

Do You Have An Amazing Ranking Story To Share?

That’s right Tucson SEO Solutions is doing some bragging today. The sites Local Internet Marketing page ranks # 1 in Google for Local Internet Marketing Services. That’s out of 573 Million web pages. What this means in reality is this. Over a half billion web pages include these four words that are currently indexed by Google.
Is that amazing or what. It trips me out (hippie speak here.) This page has ranked steadily in this position for about 5 months now. I have been able to consistently out rank websites that have been around even longer than Google! The crazy thing about all of this is that in some cases my competition has 10’s of thousands of more backlinks than I do.
So how did I accomplish this fete? Well, I simply applied myself and I began applying the principles enshrined in Scratch My Back Marketing. What I mean is that I use Web 2.0 social media sites and I add valuable and useful comments and content. In turn these sites provide useful Do Follow anchor text backlinks. It really was that simple and once I had chosen this keyword phrase for targeting it only took about six weeks to get to the top and to stay there.
That is why I cringe every time I read where someone is explaining that link building is difficult because I know that it isn’t. But none of this happens in a vacuum. It requires a well thought-out and executed plan along with lots of keyboard time.
