Is It Time To Bo Do Follow… Again?

I recently wrote about appreciating your blog readers and suggest that it is safe to be a Do Follow blog again. That made for some very interesting conversation both on and off the blog. We all know that all blogs get spam and it is especially bad for those blogs that provide Do Follow links.
I explained that much of the problem was not so much from individuals leaving comments but it was bots that were the problem. There are many lazy link builders around and they are not going away anytime soon. There are also many paid link builders from low wage counties cluttering our blogs with useless comments. This problem now has and answer. When you leave a comment here you now must leave a comment of that is at least 150 words in length or it gets rejected automatically. I am calling this plugin the Scratch My Back Marketing plugin.
For the last six months or so I have ended each post stating that you must leave a 20 word comment to be considered for a likw. This was ignored everyday by link builders who visited the blog. So now, we have forced the issue. No longer will I have to waste my time deleting short comments that I like to call drive by comments.
I also use the spam filter Akismet and found that it was always full of spam. So much so that I dumped it all. I knew from experience there were useful comments in there but it wasn’t worth it to me to preview hundreds of spam comments everyday to find a few good comments. I know that I am not alone here. I am talking about 350 spam comments a day!
So after reading several posts about the spam filter plugin, Bad Behavior I had it installed. Then I took at look at the number of spam comments per day prior to using Bad Behavior. The spam comments on a good day were 113 on the worst day it went as high as 497. That’s a lot of spam.
The day before I installed Bad Behavior the blog had 444 spam comments. That dropped down to 16 the following day. I can easily deal with this amount of spam comfortably, in fact I now pull 3 or 4 comments out of the spam filter each day. Those 3 to 4 comments were being lost each and everyday. That is potentially 100 fewer comments per month!
Over the last two months the spam has been as low as 5 and as high as 32. Now, those are numbers that I can live with. This isn’t a perfect solution but it’s a reasonably good one. We have also included a 20 word comment requirement to obtain a link from this blog. We have managed to become Do Follow without the Do Follow spam problem.
Well, I then upgraded my plugins and Bad Behavior would no longer work with the newer version of the Redirection plugin. So I switched to using the Tan Tan Noodles plugin. This plugin turned out to be even better than the Bad Behavior plugin. It has absolutely removed all the auto bot spam. The only spam that ends up in Akismet now are from bloggers on our black list. If you have a WordPress blog you can blacklist email addresses in the Discussions area under settings.
What I am suggesting here is this, when we release the Scratch My Back Marketing Plugin it could be combined with Tan Tan Noodles and Akismet for a killer anti spam approach. It will then be safe to become a Do Follow blog. The reason that most blogs are not Do Follow is because of spam. These three plugins will provide your blog with lots of protection.

We have previously written in the past we use Craigslist locally a lot to market our services. We have very little competition locally. However, we see lots of ads placed from across the country. Most often these folks don’t have an SEO website to link to in their ads nor do they provide a phone number to call.
They usually ask you to email them your domain name and they’ll get back to you. We from time to time contact them to see if they actually know anything about SEO. What we usually discover is they got lucky with a keyword phrase in a Title Tag and have landed on the first page of results.
We ran into a gentleman from the 206 area code that had done this using “Affordable Nike Drivers.” He landed in the #1 position, but that was it. That was the extent of his SEO experience and knowledge. But that didn’t stop him from offering his SEO services for $400.00. He pointed to his #1 position as proof of his skills. To the unknowing small business owner this could be impressive.
This is another classic example of you get what you pay for. This also shows the downside of using Craigslist to seek professional services. Just about everyone using Craigslist is looking for a bargain ourselves included. So it is more difficult to acquire leads from potential clients who are willing to pay for results. Craigslist for us is more about branding for us then lead generation and sales.
We often find when attending networking events that we encounter someone who has seen us on Craigslist. This was a much more valuable tool for link building before they implemented their “No Follow Policy.”

Who Are You Linking Too?

This is a feature that we are implementing with each post. It is here because we provide small business SEO solutions all across Arizona, including the Chandler, Phoenix, Scottsdale, and Glendale areas. We want to acknowledge and thank our friends and potential clients for their support. Who Are You Linking Too?
Who are you linking you? That’s right… I’m asking who you are linking to rather than who is linking to you. As website owners that have a clue or two, we understand that acquiring links is vital if we desire to rank well in the search results. Thus many of us place most of our time and effort into the process of developing useful backlinks.
We often don’t realize or we overlook who we are linking out to. As bloggers we often mention other sites in our articles. We are writing about a specific website we have already established some kind of a connection. That’s a very basic element of blogging. What many of us don’t pay attention to is who we are linking to through the comment section of the blog.
Many blog owners only focus on whether the comment is relevant to the ongoing discussion. If the comment is good nothing happens or the comment is approved. That is where the problems can begin. The search engines know that you can not control who links to you but you can control who you link to. Linking to the wrong websites can put your website reputation and rankings at risk.
That is why I verify who we are linking to. In the past we were a No Follow blog. So it didn’t make much difference who we linked too. That link was not going to be followed. Now, we are a Do Follow blog and we will be held accountable for who we link too. With this in mind I verify all new links to make sure that the site is considered reputable.
In the process of protecting our reputation we will not link to porno, escort, or gambling sites. We take this a step further we will not link to new blogs that have little or no content. Yes, we have had people link to empty pages previously. We don’t give them a link because I have no idea what will eventually appear there. We will not provide links to one page marketing sites that are hustling the latest get quick scheme. Finally, I do not link to foreign language sites. It’s not worth the risk if I don’t know what being said!
Protecting our reputation is extremely important to me. That is why I am going back through all the comments that were placed on the blog when it was a no follow blog. I did this a while back and removed the drive by comments. Now, it is time to take a closer look at the comment links again. I started the process yesterday and I discovered a few sites that were questionable and I deleted those comments.
There is a plus to visiting all these sites. Most of them, the vast majority of these sites are legitimate and many contain great and useful material. So while it is a time consuming process I have found great resources along the way.

Website 101 – Just Say No To Website Submission Services

Recently, when I was doing a website review the client asked me about how I handle website submissions. This caused me to pause for a moment, I looked at him and asked “Are you asking me if these website submission services are worth all the millions that they charge, for a useless service, that you can do yourself for free.
He stated “Yes, I have read… At this point I politely interrupted him, by saying “Yes, I known, there is a lot that is written, about how beneficial these services can be, but that is just not so, or is no longer so. He noted “things do changed don’t they?”
Yes, I explained, “things are always changing.” which is why this service is no longer beneficial. This kind of exchange happens all too often with clients and potential clients. This is especially true for the small business owner who is the mainstay of our business. This is one reason they come to us for advice.
This is why I enjoy blogging and providing training seminars. These are wonderful tools to educate the consumer and to develop trust. An educated consumer is our best friend. We want our clients to be actively involved with the marketing and management of their websites.
Our desire is to empower the client to leverage the Internet to grow there business. We provide the tools, the training, and services to conquer the SERP’s for their local target market.

Websites Are Like NASCAR!

Recently it dawned on me that websites and race cars have a lot in common. A race car team puts a lot of time, training and effort into their high performance machine. They pay lots of attention to the smallest details and are constantly fine tuning the engine and suspension. These two must work in harmony for the team to become a champion. Successful websites are no different in that they also require many pieces of the machine and team to be in harmony. Websites must also pay attention to details and fine tune to the ever changing needs of the search engines through effective optimization of the source code and content.
The other part of this website team is the user experience. Every thing must work and it should work effortlessly. Your site should be a well oiled machine that converts visitors into customers. The visitor wants to walk away a winner too by feeling they made the right choice going with your team.
So SEO then becomes like the racing teams pit boss making adjustments and fine tuning the website to produce peak performance. However, you must be able to adapt to the changing environment to become a champion. During a race the team may use multiple types of tires often adjusting and changing through out the race.
A successful website team is no different. We who practice SEO have to make sometimes drastic changes quickly to adjust to how search engines, especially how Google handles the acquiring of website links. Managing a website requires the same attention to detail as a NASCAR racing team, you want to keep it well tuned and ready to win the race.

SEO And Word Of Mouth Advertising

We attend lots and lots of business mixers here in Tucson to promote our business. At almost every event the conversation will turn to blogging and why you should provide free advice on your website. The usually refrain is “Why would you give away free advice?” Keep in mind that these are business owners that we are talking with about business.
I am still dumbfounded every time I hear that question. For, us it’s all about the golden rule in action. “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” Or perhaps, “What goes around comes around.” Some get it when put in this context, but many don’t. These are what we would call the “what can you do for me crowd.”
They are so blinded by their own wants or needs that they can not believe there is an actual benefit to helping others for free.
They don’t understand that an educated consumer can be your best client or your best word of mouth advertisement. I talked extensively with a business coach at one of these mixers. I had me laptop and gave him a quick SEO 101. We covered simple Page Title and Page Descriptions and the need for him to geo-target for Tucson.
I meet him two months at another large mixer where he joined our table. He explained how he implements what I had told him. He stated that he was now #3 and #4 on Google for the keywords that he had targeted. He then looked around the table of seven stating to each “This guy knows what he is talking about.”
He then turns to me, and he asks “now how do I get to #1 and #2?” I wryly replied “for that, it’s gonna cost ya.” I stated that since I gave so freely to him that it was now his job to go tell others.
I was retelling this story later in the evening when a friend from the table pointed out that that’s exactly what he did after leaving our table. She told us “I’ve been watching him every since we left our table, and he has been telling everyone about you and how you helped him and that he even pointed me out in the crowd.
I was blown away, I only jokingly suggested that we go tell others. Apparently he was so grateful that he felt obligated to tell others about “this guy who knows what he’s talking about.” You simply can’t buy this kind of endorsement.

As may of you know I do a lot of blogging away from this website as part of our Internet marketing, and promotion . I try to position my browser towards at least 5 blogs that are website marketing related everyday. It is a way to acquire valuable industry backlinks. It is also part of my continuing education process. This business was built from what I have gleaned from other blogs so why stop now.

T Boone Pickins Alternative Energy And Yahoo

I have desired to write about this old Texas oilman, T Boone Pickins for sometime but I didn’t see the connection for my audience until today. Mr. Picking has come up with his own alternative energy plan. He has been claiming in TV ads that our energy problem is not something that we can drill our way out of. That’s big talk coming from a famous oilman.
Mr. Pickins also has held a large stake in Yahoo, at 10 Million shares. He was adamant that the board of directors should have sold to Microsoft. So now that Carl Ichann has become a board member he has decided to was time to sell. For further reading see T. Boone Pickens selling off his entire stake in Yahoo.
Perhaps, he will then use this money to further expand his vision for his wind energy ventures. My hat goes off to Mr. Pickins for telling America that truth.

We Learned Something Today, Actually Two Things

We received an email today asking if we work on websites outside the state of Arizona. The emailer provided a link to their website, which is generally a sign that this is a serious inquiry and they also provided their name. Now, we get a fair amount of inquiries that lack this specific information. We know these people are shopping us. We know that because we email them asking for their contact information and never here back from them again.
However, this was not the case today. Unfortunately, the person who contacted us about their website has an E-commerce site and we do not work on these types of websites. He also asked if we work outside of Arizona. I quickly realized that even though we work outside of Arizona the website did not indicate this.
I graciously returned the email and informed him that we did work outside of Arizona but not on E-commerce websites. Since I always want to know “how did you find us” I asked. He responded back and said that he found us by doing a Google search for small business SEO solutions.
So I Google’d that search query and found that we are on the first page of Google at the # 7 position. To say that I was blown away and happy about this discovery would be an understatement. I have been laying plans to create a new website to target small business SEO and I was already ranking for a closely related search. That was the very good news.
What troubled me was that the website gave the message that we only work in the state of Arizona. While that has been true up to this point, we have been working to expand our reach beyond Arizona. Yet, that is not the message that my website was producing. I have to wonder how many visitors came and got that impression and moved on without asking.
It just goes to show how easy it is to miss the mark. Reflecting on this question I can easily understand where the site has fallen short and will begin to address this short coming, So thank you Daniel for opening my eyes to this weakness and strength of my website.
We always ask how someone found our website; it’s just a good business practice. I am truly grateful that he took the time to return my inquiry. Now, excuse me I have a website that needs fixed.

Golden opportunities abound on the Internet for those who are resourceful. The Internet really didn’t get going until 1995 with the advent of Yahoo and its searchable database. Things took off very quickly and got out of control. Many Internet companies went crazy and went through money like it was water. Then came the bubble and most of them went away.
Now, the web is playing a vital role for all large and small businesses. Like any technology the small business owner is often slow to adapt. However, many small businesses and entrepreneurs are focusing on the Internet with all this attention it is some times overwhelming. Yet, opportunities abound.
Yesterday, on a lark, I looked up the location of Google’s headquarters, and found it to be located in Mountain View, California. We then searched to see if www.mountianviewseo.com was available. There smack in the center of the search engine universe, this url was available. Needless to say, we snagged it ASAP. We are now the proud owners this web address.
For us this is a huge haul. We have already re-adjusted are growth plans to move this to the forefront of our business expansion. Mountain View is right next to the city of Sunnyvale which is the home of Yahoo. The opportunity to quickly land on the SEO center stage is a very exciting prospect.
You never know, this has the opportunity to place us in the big leagues, if we can convince the industry leaders to participate in providing content and comments for the websites planned blog. Stay tuned folks this could get real interesting real quick.
So this just goes to show, that opportunities are still available if you only slow down and look in the right places. For me, it’s a matter of listening to that still quiet voice inside myself.
We are prepared to launch the website later in the month of June 2008. We will be launching the website without a permanent header. We are having a header design contest and we will be awarding a winner take all prize of $250.00.

Learning the whole new language of texting doesn’t seem like to good use of my time. Many of these new social media tools and options can be effective for the right demographics.
Yes, I will miss calls and opportunities and I’m ok with that. I’m also cool when I look out my home office’s window to view the wonderful bursts of color that my garden provides.

We will eventually stop maintaining these lists unless we start getting useful comments.
