SEO Google Places Training – This Caught My Attention

This caught my attention today when I was checking on some keyword phrases that I target. The specific phrase is SEO Google Places Training. It is not a keyword phrase that I have been watching until I saw it appear in my Google Analytics report recently. I decided to check up on it as it was being used to find both of my websites.

As you can see in this screen shot. That my websites are ranking both # 1 and # 2.

It is a really great feeling to see that my efforts are paying off with both of these websites. Especially, since I am really close to launching my new website Google Places SEO Citations. It’s a really cool to see the new site doing so well and so quickly. Writing about the new site and linking to it from a PR 3 blog doesn’t hurt either. But what I am most interested is to see how well this posts ranks as this is a test of sorts of the Google freshness algorithm update. Will this post rank well as it is fresh content?

Stay tuned for further updates…..

Facebook – Social Media Marketing or

Massacring

I only recently started using videos for marketing. I never gave much thought to YouTube. I only used YouTube to find tutorial type videos. Watching videos for entertainment just was in my game plan. I still very much feel the same way.

But more recently I have become active on YouTube. One of the first people to befriend me was the company called Upside Down Iceberg. The first video that I watched from them I ended up featuring here. Then today someone from that company left two very nice comments on this blog which I posted. They thanked me for mentioning their video and provided a link to their latest video.

I liked it so much that I am featuring it here. I watch so many bad videos that when good ones come along I will be sharing them here. They also offer a great so blog content.

Why We Don’t Use Non Human Edited Directories

April 26, 2011

Welcome to the Google Places SEO Citations blog at Tucson SEO Solutions.

This blog covers local SEO which is dominated by Google, Google Places and the need for citations. The blog also covers just about any thing related to Google search results and related topics. I hope that you might glean some useful resources while you are here.

Why We Don’t Use Non Human Edited Directories

Using directories to build backlinks to your website was once a very useful website link building practice. If you are not a student of the website marketing community you might still think it is a vital useful tool. Just go to any SEO or webmaster forum and you will see dozens of threads about free directories and submission tools.

Many of us have known for some time that backlinks from directories have been devalued by the search engines for some time now. But like anything questionable in this industry it is best to get Google’s opinion on any subject. The best source of acceptable practices is Google webmaster guidelines.

These guidelines are an SEO bible of sorts. The guidelines offer a very clear picture of what is good website behavior. Until recently, Google only recommended two directories and they are both human edited directories. This should have been a hint that Google no longer values these mostly useless links.

However, in early 2008 Google did recommend the free DMOZ directory and the paid Yahoo directory. This was because they were human edited and appeared to be spam proof. That has changed with Google removing its reference to these directories in late 2008. For us this is a very clear indication that Google does not value directory links.

I have been trying to explain on forums for about a year that Google has devalued directory links. I have meet with fierce resistance until this recent development. It is somewhat amazing how people get certain web based marketing techniques ingrained in their marketing efforts and have a difficult time giving them up. There have been multiple video’s produced by Google representatives on this subject.

What it all boils down to is this. Almost all of the easy links building methods have become obsolete.  The reality is that link building has become a much more difficult and time consuming task. This is why we are such a big proponent of creating great content that is worthy of linking too and the use of ethical link building practices.

Are you still using non human edited directory submissions?

Content Is Not The King Of SEO

January 20, 2011

Welcome to the Google Places SEO blog at Tucson SEO Solutions.

Content Is Not The King Of SEO

I have started and have been engaging in several forum threads (conversations) about the topic Content Is Not The King Of SEO. I knew that it would be controversial as it goes against a common SEO myth that content is the king of SEO. It is important but not the king.

And it has elicited some rather rude comments about my lack of SEO knowledge since everyone knows content is important to SEO. But this guy knows otherwise.

So I often ask what Google patent application did that come from or maybe I simply ask what’s your references for this belief. But no one has stood up and provided any references to support their contentions.

I have gone to great lengths to explain my views in a variety of ways like this:

Let’s say that you  were going to optimize a web page for Chicago Chimney Sweep. You  will want to include these three words in the Page Title and Page Description. You would also want this phrase to appear in your domain name if possible. You would also want it to appear in the header tag and the ALT tag.  You definitely would want it to appear as a phrase in the content area. Finally, you would want this phrase to be in the anchor text of your Do Follow backlinks.

Now, that’s good old sound SEO right?

So I ask, where does  quality content  impact SEO?

But that still didn’t work for some who insisted that I am wrong. So I decided to read Google’s SEO Starter Guide to see what it had to say and this is what I found.

“Offer quality content and services

Creating compelling and useful content will likely influence your website more than any of the other

factors discussed here. Users know good content when they see it and will likely want to direct other

users to it. This could be through blog posts, social media services, email, forums, or other means.

Organic or word-of-mouth buzz is what helps build your site’s reputation with both users and Google,

and it rarely comes without quality content.”

So as I read this excerpt from Google’s SEO Starter Guide Quality content does have an indirect SEO benefit. If you have content worthy of linking too and if people can find your site they just might want to provide you with a useful Do Follow backlink.

Wow, that’s sounds more a mentally challenged third cousin than the king of SEO.

What I am presenting here is reality based SEO. And that often goes against the grain of these Google myths. It often eliciting some both vulgar and what I would consider ridiculous statements. Yesterday, someone claimed that they had been “doing SEO” for 8 to 10 years. At that point I knew some kind of put down was coming. But it just pointed that I was wrong. Basically, I was wrong because they knew better, after all he’d been around…Ya Know!

So I asked if had had any Google patent application references that might support his claim. And I was sincere, if he could support his position I was OK with that. Well, Mr. 8 to 10 year SEO’er could not support his position but he had seen enough to know that I was wrong.

This kind of exchange always seems to occurs when I attempt to dispel these myths which is sad. This is just one of many myths and deceptions that circulate around the internet. Even if they can’t defend there position they know that I am wrong… Wow!

Don’t get me wrong quality content is extremely important especially if it is designed to elicit a buying decision. It just has little to do with SEO. Just look at the search results and you will understand my point as there are lots of sites ranking well with lousy content.

Slow Loading Pages – Are They Costing You Business?

January 9, 2011

Welcome to the Google Places SEO blog at Tucson SEO Solutions.

Slow Loading Pages – Are They Costing You Business?

This post first appeared on this site back in 2008 but it is still valid today.

Does your website load quickly? Many a potential customer will never reach your website because of slow loading pages. We have all experienced this. You do your Google search and you see what looks like a promising website. You then click onto that link and wait and wait some more. Then you simply give up and try another site. That business just lost money.

A slow loading website will drive potential visitors away long before your website ever opens. You have about two seconds to accomplish this. I call it the Google effect. Web surfers are so used to Google providing search results instantly. They then expect this quickness from all websites all the time.

The problem isn’t limited to small business websites that may have been home built. They actually often load very quickly because they don’t have many people visiting at the same time or they are not loaded with a lot of graphics. Retail e-commerce sites are notoriously slow loading for a variety of reasons. There are literally Billions of dollars lost annually due to slow loading pages. This problem may require a bit of website redesign to resolve or it may not.

A general rule of thumb is that you have about two seconds maybe three for your site to open. If it takes any longer your potential visitors leave quickly to try another option. The more web savvy your visitor the quicker they leave. Imagine if your website is slow loading for a cable connection, and then imagine how slow the process is for DSL, dial-up service, or for someone using a notebook and using a Wi-Fi connection.

Update: 04/25/2009 – When I wrote this story when I knew that I had very slow loading pages. My website developed at the time swore it was WordPress that was the problem.  My current developer said the my web host, 1 and 1, that was the problem as they have really slow servers. I switched to Host Gator and the difference was amazing almost like a  night and day difference.

The moral of this story is, don’t loose your visitor before they actually see your website.

Update 01/07/2010: Slow loading pages may eventually start to affect your websites ranking in the Google search results. In 2010 Google added page speed as part of it algorithm. It is a minor change but it is worth noting.

For Google it is a matter of saving money. Slow loading pages cost it hundreds of millions of dollars every year.
