Can You Meet Or Exceed Our Google Search Results May 2010

Today, I had a lengthy conversation with a gentleman who knew that he didn’t want to learn internet marketing. His name is Mark, he said “I am an inventor, I want to invent I don’t want to learn internet marketing.” He stated that he figured that he should call me as I ranked # 1 for everything related to internet marketing in Tucson. But he said what he found most interesting was that I also ranked both # 1 and # 2.

Now, this is where things get interesting. I got his domain name and visited his site which he admitted was really bad, as in a junior high project, his words not mine. But I did not disagree. I immediately explained that his site was so bad that I would not consider him as a client until he fixed the site first. I explained that all the traffic in the world would likely not help him.

I will not provide SEO services unless the client is committed to fixing a defective website. And that my friends is one way in which I separate myself from my competitors. My competitors likely would have offered him some kind of SEO package to win his business. I always opt for the let’s do it right approach. I want my clients to succeed more than I want to make a sale.

If a potential client is not willing to do what it takes to win then I am unwilling to work for them. Most of my competitors think about themselves first and the client second. I don’t operate this way. But then I have never failed to get a client onto the first page Google for multiple keyword phrases. I approach SEO as a game and I am going to do what it takes to win by using basic SEO and ethical link building methods that I call Scratch My Back Marketing.

I’m telling you all of this for this reason. Tonight when I started doing this report I discovered that the I ranked both # 1 and # 2 for the first eight keyword phrases that I checked. The two related to website design are keyword phrases that I have not been promoting for over a year, as I no longer offer web design services.

I find that I still rank well for web design services especially rewarding because of this. Recently, a local competitors left several comments on this blog and this person even dropped a link into a comment. They tried to make my accomplishments seem insignificant. I of course deleted these comments. Amazing!

Oh yes, I should point out that everywhere here I rank # 1 and # 2 they usually rank # 3 and # 4. I don’t mind the competition at all, especially considering they have been in business for several before I ever got going.

You might also notice I rarely target the term Search Engine Optimization. I have chosen to target SEO. I did this after noticing that very few people ever landed here using the long phrase. This also freed up valuable Page Title space to go after other phrases. Which I did and happily so.

If you have visited here before you might have noticed that I am a really big fan of the long tail keyword phrase. I used this concept to add 2 new # 1’s to my quiver this month. Now, these searches are very seldom ever used but if your # 1 you’re ready when that phrase does get used your ready to do business.

It was oh so easy. I simply added another word into some forum links and bingo I have a few more # 1 ‘s. Because these forums where I made these minor changes already had over 100 links these updates changed all of these links! You can take this one to the bank.

On the down side of thing we feel of the first page for Local SEO. I opted to go after Local Internet Marketing instead. So this came as no surprise to me. This change has definitely paid off! We also only have one page ranking for most of our link building related searches. Again I chose Local Internet Marketing as our primary target. The link building leads just were not happening.

Summary of May 03 2010 results:

We rank on the first page of Google for 107 keyword phrases.

We have 75 # 1’s.

We have 35 # 1 and # 2 for the same keyword phrase.

We rank two pages another 13 times on the first page of Google.

We rank in the top 3 a whopping 94 times… Wow, that blows me away.

This Isnt Your Mommas SEO Anymore

This isn’t Your Momma’s SEO Anymore

Google says its official by announced on April 09^th that speed is now a factor in its algorithm. The implications here are huge. Google began a dialogue back in June of 2009 about the importance of speed for both Google and the websites currently in its index. They make what I believe is a brilliant presentation about the financial benefits to faster loading websites.

I have been preaching about slow loading pages since I started this blog. In fact that original post “Are slow loading pages costing you money?” was the third post to ever appear on this blog. Right out the gate I advocated that speed mattered.

As an internet marketer and trainer I visit thousands upon thousands of websites doing research and like you I loathe to wait for a page to load. Actually, let me re-state that. I don’t wait I don’t care how great your site if it loads slow me and a whole bunch of others will never see your website.

This is why I believe that it is Google’s own self interest that they chose to incorporate speed into their algorithm. It saves them resources (think money here.) It also improves a websites ability to do business because more people are actually getting to see what your website offers. The more visitors the potential for more sales. The profitable website is more likely to buy more Google advertising services. Not only that but the searcher is rewarded by arriving at their destination in a timely manner. It’s the perfect solutions where everyone wins.

Or maybe not:

Currently many website and blog owners have done very well at making the basic SEO related changes to optimize their websites. Of these some have mastered the process of acquiring backlink.. As a group these website owners have learned to use the internet to market their businesses effectively.

But This Aint Your Mommas SEO Anymore

This might be the awakening of Web 3.0. At the present Google’s is only using this speed factor with about 1% of the US market affected. This algorithm change is currently being rolled out only in the US. The average website owner is now going to be addressing things that they like to not understand. This isn’t change a tag SEO anymore.

One of the tools recommended by Google is Firebug for Firefox. This is somewhat of a website designers all purpose wrench. This is a coders tool and it’s a great as I have observed, but still it’s a coder tool. Firebug will tell you what is requires your attention. This is why I believe coders will have a huge advantage over almost everyone else.

What slows done websites often requires skills that only coders are comfortable using. My site has some issues with CSS and image files, as well as with java scripts. I am not a coder so I will need to improve my skills not only for this site but for my clients. I can read most code but I am not familiar with combining or compressing files. In this way I am like many website owners in that I don’t currently poses these skills. That leave me and those like me at a distinct disadvantage at this time.

That is why I say this isn’t your mommas SEO anymore. This isn’t just about changing tags. Google is forcing those that want to rank well to learn new skills.

My Schedule Updated

I though that I would give my readers, friends, and potential customers an update. As many of you already know my Life Partner, Geri is critically ill. She needs a new liver but may be to ill to qualify for a transplant. This has caused problems with her blood as well. So every Monday she requires that her blood be drawn to see if she requires a transfusion. If so, the transfusion occurs on Tuesday. Then there are the various doctor appointments Wednesday through Friday.

It was and still is a daunting schedule but after a month it is becoming somewhat routine. The Good news is that she was stayed out of the hospital for almost a month! Yea! for the little things.

Sometimes, as life become a bit more routine we tend to lie to ourselves about the seriousness of the situation. Less than I month ago I didn’t think that she would be ever coming home again. She had pneumonia on top of everything else.

I have been experiencing a reality check today. I have been going over and filling out her application for long term disability. This requires an honest evaluation of what Geri Can and can not do in her ADL’s (Activities of Daily Living.) This has been a sobering experience indeed. It requires detailed information on daily activities like bending over or cooking.

Every day I just go with the flow. I never know what she will be able to do from day to day. This separating and detailing the simplest tasks has been a very has experience for me. I have learned to accept what life has presented to us. I have even learned to control my emotions somewhat. I am a very emotional man who cries while watching chick flicks.

I hadn’t cried in probably two weeks. However, tears are in my eyes today as I describe Geri’s physical and mental limitations on these forms. I have accepted that when she drops something that my job is to pick it up. It is much more difficult describing this to others. I love her very much and I don’t mind doing these things for her. It’s just that the reality that she will likely never be able to pick up what she dropped if tough. To survive I just accept like its no big deal, but it is.

The form breaks down the ADL’s into 19 separate components. Of those 19 activities the only one that has not been diminished is Geri’s hearing. So that lives me with 18 ways to describe how Geri’s heath is impaired. I have found this a difficult task to complete, but i must I have no other choice. She is dependent on me, and that is very difficult her her individual spirit to accept.

Yesterday, was Geri’s 54th birthday. It is one, that a few months ago, I didn’t expect that she would ever see. I have no way of knowing how many more that we will share together. It truly live one day at a time.

As for the SEO side of me. I will be running my monthly ranking report today. I always look at this day with a certain amount of excitement. The fact that throughout all of this trauma the site continues to rank well, actually exceedingly well amazes me.

I want to say hell-o to our new visitors. Traffic on the site is up about 40% so far this year. That is most likely due to a major push to promote the link building program, Scratch My Back Marketing. I have been posting the Redux version on social media sites and forums almost daily. This mainly is the vehicle that is driving new traffic. The response has been very positive. The worst comment called the approach “lame.” I can live with that!

With SEO Or Any Service You Get What You Pay For!

We have previously written in the past we use Craigslist locally a lot to market our services. We have very little competition locally. However, we see lots of ads placed from across the country. Most often these folks don’t have an SEO website to link to in their ads nor do they provide a phone number to call.

They usually ask you to email them your domain name and they’ll get back to you. We from time to time contact them to see if they actually know anything about SEO. What we usually discover is they got lucky with a keyword phrase in a Title Tag and have landed on the first page of results.

We ran into a gentleman from the 206 area code that had done this using “Affordable Nike Drivers.” He landed in the #1 position, but that was it. That was the extent of his SEO experience and knowledge. But that didn’t stop him from offering his SEO services for $400.00. He pointed to his #1 position as proof of his skills. To the unknowing small business owner this could be impressive.

This is another classic example of you get what you pay for. This also shows the downside of using Craigslist to seek professional services. Just about everyone using Craigslist is looking for a bargain ourselves included. So it is more difficult to acquire leads from potential clients who are willing to pay for results. Craigslist for us is more about branding for us then lead generation and sales.

We often find when attending networking events that we encounter someone who has seen us on Craigslist. This was a much more valuable tool for link building before they implemented their “No Follow Policy.”

Update 05/18/2010: I have been proving that ranking well is not difficult or at least in most local or niche markets. I have recently written several posts here that targeted specific communities for our SEO Services. I have seen some of these posts go to the number one position immediately and stay there.

However, I am working on a project that is more competitive and it required lots of links. Even though the site had been around for five years it didn’t have any backlinks at all. It began it rank well for some long tail keywords almost right away. However, it has taken three months to rank on the first page of Google for its primary keyword phrase. Had I spent more time on this project it likely could have occurred much more quickly.

SEO is easy if you are highly motivated, which I am.

Who Are You Linking Too?

This is a feature that we are implementing with each post. Who Are You Linking Too?

Who are you linking you? That’s right… I’m asking who you are linking to rather than who is linking to you. As website owners that have a clue or two, we understand that acquiring links is vital if we desire to rank well in the search results. Thus many of us place most of our time and effort into the process of developing useful backlinks.

We often don’t realize or we overlook who we are linking out to. As bloggers we often mention other sites in our articles. We are writing about a specific website we have already established some kind of a connection. That’s a very basic element of blogging. What many of us don’t pay attention to is who we are linking to through the comment section of the blog.

Many blog owners only focus on whether the comment is relevant to the ongoing discussion. If the comment is good nothing happens or the comment is approved. That is where the problems can begin. The search engines know that you can not control who links to you but you can control who you link to. Linking to the wrong websites can put your website reputation and rankings at risk.

That is why I verify who we are linking to. In the past we were a No Follow blog. So it didn’t make much difference who we linked too. That link was not going to be followed. Now, we are a Do Follow blog and we will be held accountable for who we link too. With this in mind I verify all new links to make sure that the site is considered reputable.

In the process of protecting our reputation we will not link to porno, escort, or gambling sites. We take this a step further we will not link to new blogs that have little or no content. Yes, we have had people link to empty pages previously. We don’t give them a link because I have no idea what will eventually appear there. We will not provide links to one page marketing sites that are hustling the latest get quick scheme. Finally, I do not link to foreign language sites. It’s not worth the risk if I don’t know what being said!

Protecting our reputation is extremely important to me. That is why I am going back through all the comments that were placed on the blog when it was a no follow blog. I did this a while back and removed the drive by comments. Now, it is time to take a closer look at the comment links again. I started the process yesterday and I discovered a few sites that were questionable and I deleted those comments.

There is a plus to visiting all these sites. Most of them, the vast majority of these sites are legitimate and many contain great and useful material. So while it is a time consuming process I have found great resources along the way.

So let me close this post by asking this, who are you linking too?

Website 101 – Just Say No To Website Submission Services

Recently, when I was doing a website review the client asked me about how I handle website submissions. This caused me to pause for a moment, I looked at him and asked “Are you asking me if these website submission services are worth all the millions that they charge, for a useless service, that you can do yourself for free.

He stated “Yes, I have read… At this point I politely interrupted him, by saying “Yes, I known, there is a lot that is written, about how beneficial these services can be, but that is just not so, or is no longer so. He noted “things do changed don’t they?”

Websites Are Like NASCAR!

Recently it dawned on me that websites and race cars have a lot in common. A race car team puts a lot of time, training and effort into their high performance machine. They pay lots of attention to the smallest details and are constantly fine tuning the engine and suspension. These two must work in harmony for the team to become a champion. Successful websites are no different in that they also require many pieces of the machine and team to be in harmony. Websites must also pay attention to details and fine tune to the ever changing needs of the search engines through effective optimization of the source code and content.

The other part of this website team is the user experience. Every thing must work and it should work effortlessly. Your site should be a well oiled machine that converts visitors into customers. The visitor wants to walk away a winner too by feeling they made the right choice going with your team.

So SEO then becomes like the racing teams pit boss making adjustments and fine tuning the website to produce peak performance. However, you must be able to adapt to the changing environment to become a champion. During a race the team may use multiple types of tires often adjusting and changing through out the race.

A successful website team is no different. We who practice SEO have to make sometimes drastic changes quickly to adjust to how search engines, especially how Google handles the acquiring of website links. Managing a website requires the same attention to detail as a NASCAR racing team, you want to keep it well tuned and ready to win the race.
