Shampoo SEO Revisited – 700 Keywords

This post was originally created back in late 2008 and it has been updated several times.

Update 01/15/2011: If you have visited my blog since early December you will understand that life has thrown me a big old juice curve ball. I am referring to the critical illness (liver disease) that was struck my life partner and soul mate, Geri.

Having a loved one in and out of the hospital fighting for their life can be a difficult situation at best. It can at times be a gut wrenching odyssey. This is why I am pleased to announce that she has responded extremely well and is currently undergoing outpatient blood transfusion therapy. Her liver failure has also had a deferential effect on her blood supply. Today all is well.

Update 02/01/2011: Geri nearly died on several occasions last year. In fact about this time last year they wanted to put her into a hospice! That was then and now it’s a happier story. Geri’s is doing extremely well for someone who was told that her liver has “shot.” And that’s a good thing since the state of Arizona will no longer fund transplants for Medicare patients.

This left some some regular ongoing SEO practices that have been left undone. One of my standard SEO recommendations is what I like to call “Shampoo SEO.” What this is involves a review of your Google analytic’s information. Just like shampooing we consider this to be a rinse and repeat operation. We recommend this review be preformed every 30 days. It will show if what you have done is working and what needs to be improved if you pay attention.

Tonight (this morning) was another sleepless one for me and I had become bored with doing link building while performing research. So I thought I should check out Google Analytics while I was doing some other maintenance work. I first noticed that traffic was up about 20% since I last checked in December. That was a pleasant surprise. Especially considering that SEO has not been the center of my attention lately.

I also noticed that my primary keyword phrase, “Tucson SEO” had increased by 22%, this again was a very pleasant surprise. I also noted that those who choose “SEO Tucson” did so at half the rate. This group, however, was 20% less likely to bounce. They also stick a round longer as well.

But the piece of information that stood out the most was that over the last 30 days searchers used 700 different keyword phrases to reach the site. I don’t know about you but that blows me away. Almost every phrase recorded directly related to SEO, website marketing, and link building.

I am amazed that over 80 keyword phrases that I target and track and that appear on the first page of the Google results. However, that number pales when compared with the potential. This is just another example of why I have so strongly embraced and advocated for long tail keyword phrases. People think differently on just about everything and their search patterns and language vary greatly.  Keyword tools will ever provide this kind of information.

I like to call these keyword phrases the low lying fruit. It is relatively easy to rank well for these words and to stay there. If someone used an obscure phrase to find you the chances are good that other will as well. It usually takes very little effort to rank number one for these. Sure not many people will use these but since they appeared in your analytic’s its best to pay attention.

This site actually ranked # 1 for over 60 of these keyword phrases the last time I checked. Most of these phrases are 3 and 4 words long. I often begin to target one or two more phrases that I discovered through this Shampoo SEO process.

Again this is the kind of information that you just are not going to find using keyword research tools. That’s primarily because they are used infrequently. I like to call this being the big fish in a little pond.

So let me ask when is the last time that you did some Shampooing of your SEO?

What say you?
