Beware What You Add To Your Website

Around August first I started looking your for buttons to add to my website that linked to my Twitter and Facebook accounts. I came across a website called Twit This. The site claims to be a Twitter Promoter, Follower, and url shortening service.

It seemed harmless I signed up and got a button and started putting it on every blog post. Then within a few days my blog began a nose dive in the search rankings. This went on for a few weeks until I made the connection between adding this button and the blogs rapid drop in the SERP’s.

By the time that I realized this I had placed this button into 2 dozen or so blog posts. Now, I would have to remove each individually. This took a while to accomplish. But within three days my rankings were restored.

I have no idea what the problem was with hat button but Google certainly did not approve.

This is part of a multi-part series that chronicles my adventures with video marketing. I have decided to write these posts as a way to motivate you if you are considering using video marketing to promote your business.

It has been, an still is, an interesting adventure. I have been blessed to have a business partner that has supported me and provided the tools needed to prosper at video marketing. The rest has been all about desire, the desire to learn and excel. I had already laid the groundwork for video marketing. As part of my link building efforts I had already established hundreds if not thousands of social profiles.

Now, it was time to optimize these sites by uploading useful content in the form of video’s. This is part of what I like to call Scratch My Back Marketing. This requires adding quality content to website that provide user generated content. I provide quality content and the sites useful backlinks, marketing channels, and exposure.

I had been satisfied to merely use these sites to build backlinks through blog posts. It was my form of article marketing. This is a huge part of my Scratch My Back Marketing strategy. This method has proven to be extremely effective. But I was underutilizing these sites as I didn’t provide videos as well.

Well, that has definitely changed. These videos are also way cool on a person level as well. I grew up in small town rural and extremely mountainous western Pennsylvania in the 60’s. Our local YMCA had a disc jockey club. I became a member and was soon on the air doing a one hour Saturday morning radio show. Now, I’m back in front of a microphone and I’m really having fun again.

As part of my marketing adventure I am still using blog posting. I provide a transcripts of my latest video, Why Isn’t Your Website Ranking # 1?. I end the posts by linking to the video on YouTube. This provides more views, more friends, and more backlinks all of which can improve my presence and rankings on YouTube and in the Google organic results. I also pick up some useful links as well.

As a side fact, that I just discovered, I found out that YouTube is the second most used search engine in the US. Yes, YouTube is also a search engine, in this case, a video search engine.

To promote these videos I will use every website at my disposal from my large database of social media sites. This latest video will be the first in a series of videos that focus on providing non cost local SEO training.

While I have been promoting these videos on a wide range of video and social sites I have managed to use these sites to Crush The Competition for several keyword phrases. These phrases appear in my blog post and video titles. This has worked so well that I have ranked for ever position on the first page of Google for keyword phrases like Local Arizona SEO Solutions.

Yes, that going 10 for 10! This videos highlights how I accomplished this feat. This actually almost became a bit absurd as I eventually held the first 19 positions for this search. Now, that’s what I call crushing the competition. Not only that but my business is the only one that shows in the Google Places maps listing.

My latest video that posted six days ago now has 68 views. It started out averaging 5 views a day. It then went to 9 and it is now up to 11 views a day. Yes, these are very low numbers but not in the markets that I compete in. This is really something in keep in mind…. More on this point in the next post.

I have recently begun to develop a series of SEO training videos and I am finding the challenges are extremely rewarding. As I have previously mentioned as I have been providing a running narrative of my experiences.

I have been able to successfully use videos to crush my competition. There are several keyword phrases were I hold every position on the first page. Yes, that’s 10 out of 10! In two short months I have placed videos on around 100 or so websites.

When possible, I link these video’s back to their homes on YouTube. I have also spent dozens of hours viewing video’s or reading about how the YouTube algorithm works. I am still scratching my head why others rank ahead of me. There are two specific videos posted around the same time as are mine did.

That is about the only thing we have in common other than we are both targeting the same keyword phrase, Local SEO. The first two videos have only around 30 views. They have almost have no activity in their accounts. All the things that the supposed to be major factors in the YouTube algorithm don’t seem to apply here.

Now, having said that two of my three videos are one the first page ranking around 8^th and 12^th for the search Local SEO. The first video out ranks the second but the second one has about three times as many views as the first one. The second video has been on YouTube about half the days as the first one. So I still attempting to figure this all out for ranking purposes.

The first video was a pat myself on the back video where I proved that I rank both # 1 and # 2 for my services in Tucson. The second video was a training video about using social media to crush the competition. It provided useful information about how to use social media to gain a huge advantage in the Google search results.

When I first started using YouTube things were very slow. I had a hard time getting anyone’s attention. Then I played the let’s be friends routine over one weekend and ended up with about 80 friends. You need some activity on your channel page (YouTube profile page) such as friends and subscribers before people take you serious. Now, I get an average of 5 friends requests per day and my three videos have been viewed (opened) by about 580 people.

That 580 number is a bit misleading as a video gets opened as soon as someone enters my channels page. It’s a nice little tool to inflate a videos views. But what I find very interesting is that opening a video has very little correlation with whether they finish the video. Everyone knows this, but it is still extremely important because this will greatly enhance your ability to get seen. The persons video that has 1,000 views is more likely to be watched than the one with only 150 views.

Another reason that views are important is the YouTube allows you to do advanced searches. And amazingly we will likely soon be on the first page when someone is searching for the most viewed video tagged Local SEO. Our second video currently has about 360 views. The video that sits in the 20^th spot has about 450 views.

That video, the one with 450 views was posted some 10 months ago. Thus I like the position that I have found myself in. I am pleased to be targeting this search. Ranking well for views acts like a long tailed keyword phrase. It can be easy to rank well for niche markets. It also creates synergy. On YouTube mass matters. The more friends the more views the higher your video ranks.

Are you ready to give video marketing a try? If you think it is difficult think again. Take the time to watch some videos in your market niche. You will quickly see that you don’t have to be a video expert to post on YouTube. In fact most videos are not that good, so if you can produce an average video with great content you should do well.

The purpose of this video is to cut through the clutter when it comes to understanding SEO or Search Engine Optimization.

I am talking about taking local websites or niche websites.

Going all the way to the number one position in the Google search results.

This is not about using some paid mystery internet marketing program.

No this video series is all about using good old basic DIY SEO techniques.

This video series is intended for the local small business owner with a poorly ranking website.

The material is also well suited for websites that serve niche markets but are not geography defined.

The common thread between that the local and niche website is this.

They both have a lack of competition within their respective markets .

The competition that you might have likely has little or no knowledge of how SEO works.

Your only reference about SEO may be from spam emails so you might already be think negatively about SEO.

After all… You, the local small business owner have been too busy.

You have been busy running your business to pay much attention to your website.

The reality is that your direct competition is likely to be 20 or less websites in local markets.

A Google search for German Bakery produced around 340,000 results.

How many of these do you think are actually optimized their websites for German Bakery in Tucson?

How many of them do you think are actively involved in a regular link building program?

A well optimized website and some quality backlinks should have most local websites ranking well.

I am simply amazed again by our monthly Google rankings report. Google did a major algorithm update that is being called The May Day Update. It occurred around May first of 2010. The update affected mainly long tail keyword phrases. We went from ranking for 108 keyword phrases to a whopping 308 keyword phrases of these 297 are in the top three!

Digg Gets An Overhaul

Digg Experiences A Make Over

I noticed a tweet today that announced that Digg had just rolled out there new design. I eventually ended up there and logged in. From what I can see Digg is attempting to be more like Twitter. It now allows connecting with your Twitter and Facebook accounts as well as with Google.

I had long ago stopped using Digg so I cannot remember all of the features that it had. The submission process is much easier. It also has a feature where you can add links that is similar to social bookmarking that doesn’t get voted on.

It will be interesting if Digg can become a major force in internet marketing that it once was. The roll out wasn’t completely perfect. On several occasions pages or features did not load properly. I like what they are doing here but It may be a little too late to make a difference for Digg.

Twitter Adds New Feature

Twitter Adds New Feature

This may not to the most up to date post but I still wanted to write about this new feature on Twitter. A few weeks ago I noticed that Twitter had added a feature, Who to follow. It had been catching a lot of buzz around the blogoshere lately.

This picture shows some of the possibilities that Twitter offered today. I don’t know who these people are so I am not likely to follow them.

Twitter delivers these people based on who you are already following and by location. So I get a mix of SEO, local, and tech related users. This week I started following Bill Gates of Microsoft and Eric Schmidt and Matt Cutts of Google.

I have been following the leaders in my industry and this is beginning to keep me in loops of the tech and SEO communities. I have begun to use Twitter as a feed reader to deliver up to date posts. This new feature has saved me a lot of time searching for the industry leaders to follow. Doing searches for other SEO’ers I was a bit surprised by how many SEO guys didn’t show that they had a Twitter account or they were not promoting it.

Google Plans To Buy Slide

Google announced the purchase by the website called Slide on the same day as I deleted my membership. I thought that was very interesting. I doubt if I knew that Google was purchasing the site if I would have stayed. Slide was one of those sites that I could not figure out how to make it work for me.

Google says that they bought the company for their technology. I should hope that they have some useful technology for that $182 Million price tag!

Finding Twitter Useful I Am A Convert

Finding Twitter Useful I am a convert!

I original tested Twitter for 3 months and then I stopped using it. I based my decision on a 100% bounce rate. What I mean is that every Twitter user that ever visited my blog looked around and then left. This isn’t the kind of traffic that I am looking for.

The problem was that I was not using Twitter effectively. I thought that I would give it another try as I wanted to use it to promote a new marketing program. So I figured that I should give it another try.

I started by focusing on mostly Tucson businesses. That didn’t work very well as most of the people that I followed had given up on Twitter. So I figured that I would focus on SEO players. I figured that I would use Twitter as a feed reader of sorts.

This actually has been very productive for me. It brings fresh useful information about my industry front and center. I also started following anything Google. This was a great idea. It allow me access to information on the cutting edge. This is one of my better ideas this year.

I have been doing this for about a month and it has already lead to a half dozen or so blog posts. In the past I would literally Stumble upon information. Usually, it was weeks old or worse. Now, my posts can be more relevant. It also helps on the days when I can’t think of anything to write about. Since I started doing this I have published a post everyday this month. This will eventually help in the search rankings.

Then I hit a plateau of 200 followers. I would gain 5 and then I would lose five. I think I was overloading some followers with the same information. I have about 50 accounts connected to Twitter. When I am link building I might post the same video on several sites in the same day. These would produce the same updates and I know that gets old quickly.

This really can be a problem when I am uploading videos. The same video can easily get Tweeted a dozen or so times in a day. If your follower doesn’t follow many active users then my updates may be all that they are seeing. I know I experienced with other heavy posters and I stopped following them.

What seems to be bringing more followers is my heavy use of YouTube. I am targeted Local SEO and Internet Marketers there. In turn some of those that I have friended are now following me on Twitter.

I have also found Twitter to be very useful in keeping up with local activities here in Tucson. I am following several deals and activities sites that target Tucson. This has not only been useful but it has saved me money as well.

The one thing that I look out for is those that share what they had for lunch. As soon as I see a Tweet like that I remove these people. This also is what turns off a lot of people and I am one of them.

This morning my Twitter account was apparently placed into some automated system. I got about 150 new followers in about an hour. It is now several hours later and some of these new followers are already gone! This is the first time I have seen this on Twitter.

Where I really believe that Twitter will be useful is by using the Connections feature. When I tweet on Twitter it now updates another 51 sites. Many of these sites change that no follow link to a do follow link. So when I tweet a blog post I automatically am acquiring a few dozen back links to my blog. Is that cool or what!

My YouTube Adventures

My YouTube Adventures

I only recently have begun to learn hot to produce videos. This process also required that I learn how to market these videos. This would require that I also learn a new algorithm for Google’s YouTube. Here is part of what I have learned and experienced.

The very first step came before I started to work on understanding how YouTube worked. I first started with a video distribution site called TubeMogul. I choose TubeMogul because it would allow me to upload to many sites at once. It took me a while to set up as you have to be a member of these sites to send them videos. You then must enter each sites login information. As it turns out my material was acceptable to only eight sites. This alone will save me huge amounts of time.

Loading one video and getting it listed on eight sites at once seemed like a no brainer to me. That’s when amazing things began to occur in the search results. While I was in the process of adding my video manually to other sites good things were happening. The video that was being distributed by TubeMogul was already appearing in the search results. It took about only about an hour to occur. Is that cool or what?

Videos are likely to be the best avenue for most local businesses to gain quick access to the first page of the Google results. Google definitely shows a preference for videos. When I recently searched by using the businesses name, Tucson SEO Solutions, this is what I found. Google showed 5 video references from the two videos that I have published on the first page of it’s results. When I used both Bing and Yahoo they showed only one reference each.

YouTube was the real challenge for me. I have not arrived yet, but after one month I am making some headway. Both of these videos are now appearing on the first page of the search results for the search Local SEO. The really makes me happy. But more importantly I have acquired 14 subscribes and 49 friends. It is this group that was the greatest potential to impact my rankings over time. As these individuals begin to leave comments and interact on my channel the better off I will be.

Here are some of the things that I have gleaned while using YouTube. In my area of interest, there is only a very small amount of videos that show up in the YouTube search results for Local SEO. That was a huge surprise to me. I also observed that many of these videos where shoot from the hip variety made in someone’s home office. The vast majority of videos that I have watched so far in the Local SEO market are unedited and were not produced as much as they were made.

The few really professionally looking videos were mostly slide shows with a soundtrack and no audio. I thought that strange. Many people are multitasking when the are watching training videos, especially those that are of the slide show variety. If all or much of the video contains printed slides which is often the case people often turn away from the visual. I know that I do this so when I watch videos and without audio I leave.

I eventually will be watching or at least starting every video tagged “Local SEO” everyday for about another month. This can sometimes be a very boring task as many of these videos are very poorly. But mostly I abandon them because there speaker is putting me to sleep.

But that’s not always the case. I second person(s) to friend me had an unusual name of Upside Down Iceberg with a name like that I had to check them out.They have a must see video, Social Media Marketing In 3 Minutes. It is so good that I did a blog post specifiably about it.

Well, that’s what I have to share for now. So if you are a small business owner with a website know this. A video is the quickest way to get onto the first of the Google results. So you really should consider using video to market your business.

Update 08/16/2010: A week has passed since I first posted this. Both videos are ranking on the first page for the keyword phrase Local SEO. YouTube shows 20 videos per page and mine rank # 11 and number 14. I have 22 subscribes and 110 friends. I have been getting about 5 friends requests per day for the last few days.

Strange But True

Strange But True

About once a week a will go into my Google Analytics account. When doing so I usually check to see what keywords people used to find my website. The amount of keywords used over a 30 day period generally is around 700.

There are always some very strange keyword phrases. Sometimes I get perplexed by what keywords are used. Today was no exception. I found that two people visited the website after doing the search for schoolgirl list. That really got my attention as this is a term that I would never use.

The strange thing was that it linked to a page that used to contain Do Follow blog lists. This post has close to 500 comments on it. It was then I realized that these words likely appeared in someones spam comment. I was not going to search through these just to remove these words.

Just though this was Strange But True!

So I chalk this one up to Strange But True.

Google to Allow Multiple Sign-in

Google has made a change that will really benefit those who have multiple accounts like I do.This is how I will benefit from this change. I often am working with two Firefox browsers open. In one browser I may have one account open for searching purposes. In the other browser I may want to check another accounts Gmail. What often happens is this.

I will log into that email account and then I will get immediately logged out because another account is open. This has been very frustrating and I waste of time for me. I have been grumbling that I would like to have multiple accounts open at once for years. Well, now you can.

You simple need to go to your account setting and check the box that reads “ On – Use multiple Google Accounts in the same web browser. “

Content Is Not The King Of SEO

I have started and have been engaging in several forum threads (conversations) about the topic Content Is Not The King Of SEO. I knew that it would be controversial as it goes against a common SEO myth that content is the king of SEO.

And it has elicited some rather rude comments about my lack of SEO knowledge since everyone knows content is important to SEO. But this guy knows otherwise.

So I often ask what Google patent application did that come from or maybe I simply ask what’s your references for this belief. But no one has stood up and provided any references to support their contentions.

I have gone to great lengths to explain my views in a variety of ways like this:

Let’s say that you were going to optimize a web page for Chicago Chimney Sweep. You will want to include these three words in the Page Title and Page Description. You would also want this phrase to appear in your domain name if possible. You would also want it to appear in the header tag and the ALT tag. You definitely would want it to appear as a phrase in the content area. Finally, you would want this phrase to be in the anchor text of your Do Follow backlinks.

Now, that’s good old sound SEO right?

So I ask, where does quality content impact SEO?

But that still didn’t work for some who insisted that I am wrong. So I decided to read Google’s SEO Starter Guide to see what it had to say and this is what I found.

“Offer quality content and services

Creating compelling and useful content will likely influence your website more than any of the other

factors discussed here. Users know good content when they see it and will likely want to direct other

users to it. This could be through blog posts, social media services, email, forums, or other means.

Organic or word-of-mouth buzz is what helps build your site’s reputation with both users and Google,

and it rarely comes without quality content.”

So as I read this excerpt from Google’s SEO Starter Guide Quality content does have an indirect SEO benefit. If you have content worthy of linking too and if people can find your site they just might want to provide you with a useful Do Follow backlink.

Wow, that’s sounds more a mentally challenged like a third cousin than the king of SEO.

What I am presenting here is reality based SEO. And that often goes against the grain of these Google myths. It often eliciting some both vulgar and what I would consider ridiculous statements. Yesterday, someone claimed that they had been “doing SEO” for 8 to 10 years. At that point I knew some kind of put down was coming. But it just pointed that I was wrong. Basically, I was wrong because it knew better, after all he’d been around…Ya Know!

So I asked if had had any Google patent application references that might support his claim. And I was sincere, if he could support his position I was OK with that. Well, Mr. 8 to 10 year SEO’er could not support his position but he had seen enough to know that I was wrong.

This kind of exchange always seems to occurs when I attempt to dispel these myths which is sad. This is just one of many myths and deceptions that circulate around the internet. Even if they can’t defend there position they know that I am wrong… Wow!
