Another Pretender Enters The Tucson SEO Market
Every other month or so some out of company decides to enter the market for SEO in Tucson. And there is nothing wrong with this at all. Tucson SEO Solutions was ranked # 1 for SEO in Tucson for 4 years now. So I don’t feel threatened at all as they usually leave after 6 months or so.
The newest company calls itself Tucson SEO Management. What got my attention about this company was a blog post that they created that repeatedly used my business name throughout the post. They problem was that they were not talking about this business but they were using the businesses name as a keyword phrase.
The reality was that they were using this businesses name to promote themselves. It may seem odd but this kind of stuff goes on all the time. People use other businesses names to promote their business. They hope the post will rank well enough that they will get some traffic for their efforts.
Now, personally, I have always thought that this sort of bait and switch is a waste of time. If I was looking for company xyz and I ended up at another site I will usually leave unless it is a review about that company. If I am looking for company xyz I am not interested in company xyz sotra.
But others still think this is a good idea to try to steal away website traffic by using your top competitor’s business name. So I contacted the websites owner and let him know that I was aware of their actions. I nicely asked that the post be re-written by removing the references to Tucson SEO Solutions or removed it.
I did this all in a very calm and deliberate manner. They other business owner became extremely defensive. He claimed that he would hang up if I continued to be hard, which I was not. I simply re-stated that they site was using my businesses name to promote themselves and I wanted the reference removed.
He claimed that Tucson SEO Solutions was just a phrase and that he did not intend it as a reference to my business. I questioned his business skills if he did not know that Tucson SEO Solutions was the dominate player in this market. I pointed out that he has out of town (Houston area) and that he built a website to enter this market. I asked, “who does that without knowing who your competition is?”
Case closed, he knew what he was doing, he got called out, and then he chose to claim ignorance. At this point, I reminded him that he was not the first to do this. I also mentioned that everyone else apologized when confronted and they all removed my businesses name.
He said it would be removed or changed and I can report that is what occurred. I checked today and all reference to this business was removed which makes me happy. I also suspect that he will not be around very long and I also am suspect of his SEO skills. Any SEO provider that using the city name before the service (SEO) doesn’t have a very good understanding of search behaviors at all!
Only about 30% of searchers will ever use a city name in their search queries. Of those, most will enter the city into the query after the first search failed to provide what they wanted. The first will search for SEO, then they will try SEO Tucson or wherever. They don’t often search using Tucson SEO. The analytic stats will prove this time and time again!

Google Doesn’t Like My Name

Google Doesn’t Like My Name
That’s right Google doesn’t like my name. On the 24th of March 2012 Google informed me that they didn’t think that Urban Scurry, my real name, was real. They threatened to close out my Google account if I didn’t change my name used in my accounts profile.
Google provided a review option link which I clicked on and that was it I guess. My account is still working so I assume that they actually Google’d my name. With 1800 references I guess they figured out that most of these where associated with myself, my business, and my businesses address.
They might have even searched there marketing database and discovered me in that database. It sure seems that the AdWords people know who I am just not this group. Since Google is all about information and indexing information it seemed odd that I got this notice.
However, this isn’t the first time this happened. My account on the question and answer website, Quora, was suspended over the same issue. They also didn’t believe that anyone could be named Urban Scurry. When I did a Google search for my name today the third place was for a comment I made on Quora. It reads Quora My Name Really Is Urban Scurry.
Yes, having an unusual name can be a blessing but it can also be a curse. Google gave me 3 days to resolve this issue by now I guess they figured it all out as my account is still active.

Two Years Later

Two Years Later
This story begins back in 2009 when the love of my life, Geraldine was diagnosed with a life threatening liver ailment. Then she lost insurance as her life slowly slipped away. She had insurance when unemployed. Then she became employed and lost the insurance when she needed it the most. All while congress debated health care reform.
By October she was hospitalized in critical condition but without insurance. She would wind up in the hospital over Thanksgiving Day, Christmas, and New Years Day. Then pneumonia struck her down in February. At one point the hospital tried to put her in a hospice. Her family was rounded up for the farewell tour.
Yes, things were bleak but eventually she was provided medical insurance through ACCHS. She continued to see her many specialist. They all routinely told her that her liver was “shot.” So in March of 2010 I confronted her primary care physician about this. I asked “How long does she have to live?” He gave her three months. I needed to know for a myriad of reasons. Her not so much!
But ever since that day she has gotten better. Geri just was not ready to die and willed herself to better health. She has done a very good job of managing and adapting to her illness. She is still critically ill but from a distance you would never know this.
Now, some days are better than others. The really hard thing for her is that she cannot process medicine. So when she does get sick she can’t take an aspirin or a sinus pill. Things that I take for granted can be toxic for her. Her options are limited to ointments which do nothing for the allergies. And it has been a long very dry spell this winter in Tucson. This has been difficult on her and me as well. I hate to see her suffer so.
Yes, life lived with a critically ill person is a challenge on a multitude levels. And some days are better than others. Yet, there are many days, if not close to everyday, that we make each other smile or laugh. You see, we are very aware each day is a blessing. We both go out of our way to make each other laugh. Sometimes so much it hurts.
Illness can often be a truly mind altering and life changing event. And yet, two years later here I sit typing knowing that my Geri is quietly sleeping just a few feet away. Yes, I am grateful that my mate is still at my side. There’s a lot more what can I do for you and a lot less what can you do for me around here.
I am a lucky and fortunate man and I know it.
