Winning In Tough Economic Environments – Part 2 Size Matters
Today we are going to address the first two items listed in Winning In Tough Economic Environments – Part 1. They deal with the size of your content, and yes size really does matter. Let’s say your website has very little content on its pages. What kind of message does it provide for your visitor?
Here are some of the messages that you might be sending unintentionally.
Taking them for granted. A lack of content may single that you are don’t care if the visitors does business with you or not.
Shows a lack of effort – Most people subconsciously want to be sold and may be put off by your lack of effort. It signals that you really don’t care if your website ever produces business.
Can’t make a decision – Visitors need to be sold, to be given a reason to contact you or to buy your products. You need to motivate the buyer.
Shows a lack of caring – If you put so little effort into your websites content it will sow seeds of doubt. People will wonder if this is how you approach other areas of your business.
Doesn’t build confidence – You have to be able to instill confidence that you are a trusted vendor.
Assumes the sales – A lack of a sales funnel assumes that just because you have a website that visitors will want to do business with you.
Now, we will look at the website that has too much content. We are referring to the amount of text that appears on each page not the over all sites size.
Boring – Pages that have too much text can easily bore and drive the visitor away.
Readers Digest Approach (Condensed Version) – People don’t like to be over sold. If you have 800 words but it can be said in 400. Then do go with the condensed version.
Information Overload – Consider making the home page the hub to your site. It should provide snippets of information about your others pages with links to individual pages that have the specific details.
More Information Overload – My perfect example is CNN.com or just about any major news outlet. They throw in everything plus the kitchen sink at you which makes finding anything difficult. You don’t want to make the visitor have to do a lot of scrolling to find what they are looking for.
You need to ask yourself “Is my website easy to use?” If the answer is no then you definitely have a big problem. Visitors are scanners. They scan your website to see what they need. Make finding things difficult and they surely will leave.
While the site with little content underwhelms the site with too much content overwhelms the visitor. What you find acceptable and comfortable may turn large amount of visitors off. So you must attempt to find a perfect balance. The only realistically way to evaluate this is to do what is know as A/B testing of your web pages. A/B testing delivers two versions of your web page. It records the effectiveness of each page.
Our standard recommendation on your product or services pages is between 300 – 600 words per page. The idea here is to have enough text to generate an effective features and benefits presentation.

Get A Free Mobile Site From Google
About a month or so ago I noticed that Google’s Webmaster Tools was offering me a free Google website. At that time the suggested website included my email account as part of the url. I didn’t much like that idea. I also did think that I needed another website or web page to promote the business. Then today I came across this blog post,Google Offers DIY Mobile Sites for SMBs, by Greg Sterling. So I thought I would look into this further.
Now, I have specifically avoided having a mobile website as I am not a brick and mortar location. Also I don’t think that many people who need SEO services are going to use a phone to search for my services. But since I was in a blogging frame of mind I thought it might be worth checking out.
The process was fairly simple but a few things did confuse me a bit. I had the biggest problem trying to figure out how to add my logo. This required that I do a Google search to find my answer. In a few moments I had my answer and in about 30 minutes I had a new website/web page. Google refers to this as a landing page.
After I completed a very basic site which is shown below here. I then went immediately to Webmaster Tools and added this page to my account.
I know it is a very generic looking page, but its a start. And I now have a free web mobile page. I am curious to see if this page will actually show up in the search results. If am also curious to see if this page will generate any traffic to it or to this site.
Basically in the time it takes to write a blog post I also adding a mobile site.

Domain Names, Eli Manning And Going 19-0
May 13, 2008
First off, I am a big fan of the Super Bowl, especially if the Steelers or Teddy Bruschi are playing. Growing up in rural western Pennsylvania you were a Pirates fan in the summer and a Steelers fan all year round. Hockey wasn’t on anyone’s radar. When you got old enough your thirst was likely to be quenched by an Iron City or a 7 once Rolling Rock while watching touchdown Terry Bradshaw lead the team to victory.
Forgive me for digressing; this story is about this years Super Bowl. Teddy Bruschi is a local football legend here in Tucson. He played his College years and was a central part of what was known as Desert Swarm Defense at the University of Arizona. Now we plays for New England.
On the occasional off year when neither was playing we merely watched the game for the commercials. This year had all the earmarking of a really big game. Would Teddy and the New England Patriots be the first time to go undefeated since the Miami Dolphins did 1972?
Our interest in the game really got intense when we were able to purchase undefeated19-0 .com, .net, and .biz. 12 hours before the kick-off. If New England goes undefeated and Eli Manning doesn’t throw the miracle passes and with a minute and a half to go the Giants don’t score, we are sitting on a gold mine of domain names.
Our $30.00 bet on these football history making domain names had us standing and shouting the whole second half. We were way to amped to pay any attention to those silly commercials we had sugar plumbs and new vehicles dancing about our heads.
Yes, we were gambling but in a very legal way. I followed my gut check around midnight the night before the game. I did a” who is” search and found that all three of these names were available. I snagged them on the spot. I was so excited that I couldn’t sleep that night.
When I placed the bet on the undefeated Patriots it looked like the stars and moon aligned and pointed my way. I don’t gamble much. When I do it’s only a lottery ticket and then only if there’s a huge jackpot and something unusual happens like the grocery store check out bill is $7.77. Then and only then do I buy a lottery ticket.
I don’t gamble with money because it’s a gamble. This bet was worth every penny. It turned out to be very thrilling experience, a high if you will, when the reality of the faithful catch hit home our spirits crashed. No wonder it can become an addiction.
I tell this story as an example of all the wonderful opportunities that still exist with the Internet. These technologies are still in its childhood stages. There are billions of dollars to be made and created through this vehicle. I consider myself fortunate to be a small part of it all. We didn’t win the domain name jackpot but it sure has been interesting.
