Content Is Not The King Of SEO

January 20, 2011

Welcome to the Google Places SEO blog at Tucson SEO Solutions.

Content Is Not The King Of SEO

I have started and have been engaging in several forum threads (conversations) about the topic Content Is Not The King Of SEO. I knew that it would be controversial as it goes against a common SEO myth that content is the king of SEO. It is important but not the king.

And it has elicited some rather rude comments about my lack of SEO knowledge since everyone knows content is important to SEO. But this guy knows otherwise.

So I often ask what Google patent application did that come from or maybe I simply ask what’s your references for this belief. But no one has stood up and provided any references to support their contentions.

I have gone to great lengths to explain my views in a variety of ways like this:

Let’s say that you  were going to optimize a web page for Chicago Chimney Sweep. You  will want to include these three words in the Page Title and Page Description. You would also want this phrase to appear in your domain name if possible. You would also want it to appear in the header tag and the ALT tag.  You definitely would want it to appear as a phrase in the content area. Finally, you would want this phrase to be in the anchor text of your Do Follow backlinks.

Now, that’s good old sound SEO right?

So I ask, where does  quality content  impact SEO?

But that still didn’t work for some who insisted that I am wrong. So I decided to read Google’s SEO Starter Guide to see what it had to say and this is what I found.

“Offer quality content and services

Creating compelling and useful content will likely influence your website more than any of the other

factors discussed here. Users know good content when they see it and will likely want to direct other

users to it. This could be through blog posts, social media services, email, forums, or other means.

Organic or word-of-mouth buzz is what helps build your site’s reputation with both users and Google,

and it rarely comes without quality content.”

So as I read this excerpt from Google’s SEO Starter Guide Quality content does have an indirect SEO benefit. If you have content worthy of linking too and if people can find your site they just might want to provide you with a useful Do Follow backlink.

Wow, that’s sounds more a mentally challenged third cousin than the king of SEO.

What I am presenting here is reality based SEO. And that often goes against the grain of these Google myths. It often eliciting some both vulgar and what I would consider ridiculous statements. Yesterday, someone claimed that they had been “doing SEO” for 8 to 10 years. At that point I knew some kind of put down was coming. But it just pointed that I was wrong. Basically, I was wrong because they knew better, after all he’d been around…Ya Know!

So I asked if had had any Google patent application references that might support his claim. And I was sincere, if he could support his position I was OK with that. Well, Mr. 8 to 10 year SEO’er could not support his position but he had seen enough to know that I was wrong.

This kind of exchange always seems to occurs when I attempt to dispel these myths which is sad. This is just one of many myths and deceptions that circulate around the internet. Even if they can’t defend there position they know that I am wrong… Wow!

Don’t get me wrong quality content is extremely important especially if it is designed to elicit a buying decision. It just has little to do with SEO. Just look at the search results and you will understand my point as there are lots of sites ranking well with lousy content.

Really content is the king of SEO. Always google will give preference to content. Still this is very very important in SEO. If we have good content, visitor relugulary will come to read the content.

Well, this is today’s first SINO (SEO In Name Only) report!

Yesterday, someone claimed that they had been doing SEO for 8 to 10 years. At that point I knew some kind of put down was coming. But it just pointed that I was wrong. ADMIN: Wow, as far as content goes this is called spamming me with my own words copy and paste style!

I think that the reason people believe that content is king is due to the fact that if your content is crappy, you will get no links at all (quality, relevant links being the real king).

Clearly google rates links heavily, if not adobe would not show up for the search “click here”. And one can’t say that isnt a competitive keyword because there are a billion websites that have click here as a link to something.

Admin: Actually, there are a huge amount of websites that have “click here” buttons that I have gotten indexed for this phrase. All that means is that that page got indexed for that word. It does not mean that these sites were actively promoting this keyword phrase.

This is not a competitive search!

You offer SEO services but you show a basic lack of knowledge about how search works to make your point. If you want to talk search while you are here make sure to know the facts first!

In some degree, i agree with you.

if you can write very professional and vaule article, the cotent is still king. but the problem is that 90% people can not write this kind article each day.

Like me, i only write 20 words each day as news and keep my web updated by good.

then, place most time on build backlinks.

Especial for google, backlink maybe the real king

First, you’re getting some interesting spam; I think I’d delete it. lol

Second, I’m one of those people who believes content is king. My reasoning behind that belief is that if there’s no content, then there’s nothing to optimize. I’ve read this same stuff about “click here” being found by the search engines, but try optimizing for it without your site being called “click here”.

Third, a site may or may not be found without content; odds are greatly against it. Also, even if found, unless it’s something really odd, without content it won’t have a chance to rank anywhere near the top. With more content, especially reinforcing extra pages, your site has a great chance to rank better in SERPS.

    At least that’s my opinion.

Admin: Hi Mitch, glad to have you back as a visitor and commenter. I always appreciate your insightful comments.

I agree that content is extremely important it just say little impact on the SEO process.

This site ranks on the first page of the Google results for over 150 keyword phrases but I never work on content as it relates to SEO. The same is true for my clients and they all rank on the first page of Google. I would not want to rely on just content to rank high through backlinks.

In order to really create valuable information today, it takes a good producer and a good promoter. Very few people are good at both. I know I’m not, which means I have two choices. As a producer, I can either learn how to market my content or find someone to partner with like you did to help me with marketing. The same idea applies to any business.

  8. SEOP Inc. says:

Having quality contents is still the best way to go. Search engine prefers fresh and quality contents over having all the other SEO factors covered. Content is still king.

  9. Alex@International Moving says:

Controversial title? Nice idea to grab attention! Valuable content and good keywords – these are the basics of SEO. It’s not possible to go without.

that really great, what you have shared over here. i really appriciat that people research in SEO field and whenever they get information about it and then after they share this all over here . so i got much from this post. really nice

  11. Sarah Harris says:

I don’t see why people would think that what you’re saying isn’t correct. The whole thing that makes SEO so difficult and interesting is that no one ever knows exactly what works. And yes, content is extremely important, but I have also seen many sites with high rankings, where their content is poor, not done often enough, and generally uninteresting. It just proves that there are other factors and everything must work well in combination. Saying that content is king is a silly statement.

Well, said Sarah. If ranking well was all about quality content then the SERP’s would certainly look much different than they do.

  12. ObDb says:

Very Useful information , this is both good reading for, have quite a few good key points, and I learn some new stuff from it too, thanks for sharing your information

  13. o c says:

I still believe that content is king but I should specify that the content should be good content. I believe google has changed their algorithm to stop indexing those sites that only have keywords and no content at all. I maintain a blog and though I do some SEO for it, it is still the content that drives people to read my blog.

ADMIN: You are actually talking about two different things here. Content is driving traffic not your search rankings. Content only drives traffic for SEO purposes if your readers provide you with A Do Follow anchor text back link its that simple.

And your content has to be superior for this to occur. I read lots of content daily and I almost never write about it no matter how good it is. I, like others, are just to busy to do it. Also many if not most of your readers lack the ability, time, or knowledge to do this.

Content is the king just not of SEO.
