Craigslist Launched A Search Engine Optimization Career!
September 7, 2008
Craigslist helped launch our SEO career, yes it’s true. We had had a lot of success using Craigslist to market our organically grown plant business back in 2005 and 2006. However, we could not overcome a severe drought that has gripped the desert southwest were we live for several years.
We closed that business and took the summer off to rest and reflect on our future. With a new source of income needed, as the autumn months approached, we called upon our past experience. Running a janitorial business. We knew that commercial services were not the route that we wanted to take.
So we chose to open, a professional house cleaning service. What we experienced using Craigslist was a race to become the lowest priced vendor asked to clean homes that hadn’t been cleaned in years. That was not the vision we had for our business.
We observed that none of my Craigslist competitors had a website to link to in their ads. That’s when the lights went off… So to speak, in my head… “If only we had a professional website that we could link to in our ads”, there we could explain how dependable we are and why our services were worth a premium price.
The problem was that there was no money for a professional website to be designed. When like any good entrepreneurs we realized that bartering was our only option. Finally, a designer agreed to exchange his services for ours. However, his time table was not in sync with ours and we needed a website now.
Our solution was a one page free geo-cities website from Yahoo. The site was up in an hour or two. Now, it was time to visit Craigslist to place a free ad that included a link to the new one page website.
My phone rang early the next morning, the caller explained I am on your website and I would like to set up an appointment for a consultation. We agreed to work together and this couple became my most lucrative client. This is our story of Craigslist launching an SEO career? I knew that day this Internet thing was where we were headed!
The rest is history!

Got something to say?

Great story and from one SEO consultant to another I hope you have a successful and long career in the industry.
Working SEO on the East coast (Virginia) has been fun and demanding. I assume the West is no different. Best of luck.
That is a very interesting post. I usually only associate Craigslist with spam. I never thought that someone could get an SEO start there.
You think having a website for a small service company can be beneficial? Craigslist has a lot of potential for advertising but I’ve heard they have made some changes in the posting regulations is this true? keep sharing the info.

I do mostly network and computer support. I only dabble in sites for my friends as a sideline. I try to tell everyone who will listen that they need some type of site. It doesn’t have to be fancy, it just has to be there.
These days, having a website (for a non-web-based business) is like having a sign in front of your business. If you don’t have it people won’t even know that you are there. If you do have a website and most of your competitors don’t, you will gain an advantage is your business is otherwise high quality.
Admin: Thanks for more great input.
I have never read much about how someone got into SEO. I figured most got into this by chance, as you have. This is a very inspiring story have you ever thought about writing a book?
Admin: We were working on plans to do an ebook but that feel through, maybe later.
