The whole dofollow and nofollow thing is a complete wreck. I believe that dofollow serves a very useful purpose, but people have abused the hell out of it. It is sad to see so many blogs having to switch because of spammers. Bloggers normally work on there own for little revenue. They should get to spend there time posting useful content and not being comment police.

I’ve been following this post for a couple of months now. I must admit i started my online business earlier this year as a complete novice and i also became a comment spammer by accident. I didn’t know any better back then because i innocently thought that the only way to get ranked on the search engines was to get as many one way links pointing at my site as quickly as possible using whatever means possible. It’s not until (thank goodness!) i found this post ironically sent here by one of the frowned upon niche blue print brigade (anyone following this post will know what I’m talking about).

I’ve been thinking about this problem (as an ex-comment spammer) would it not be useful if somebody conducted a study on how many comment spammers out there fell into this trap the way i did and sort out who are the genuine people trying to grow their business’s and those that are blatantly and knowingly just trampling over other peoples hard work just to selfishly get ahead?

If the percentage of those like me out there is quite high maybe an early warning system in the form of a friendly message and advise on the errors of their ways may reduce the problem dramatically?

I for one would have benefited from such advise if i had known how much damage i was causing not only to myself but to others. The only thing i was guilty of was lack of knowledge on the subject

Admin: Andy, on several different occasions I have admitted that I did this in the beginning as well. Usually it was when I was tired in the early morning hours. I actually like making comments but when I got tired I would get lazy. It wasn’t until I owned my own blog that I began to appreciate the importance of comments.

Having said that I am planning on launching a site in a few months that is based on Scratch My Back Marketing or ethical link building. You will be contacted when the site gets launched.

  3. Mystery Shopping (1 comments) says:

    So where is the list?

Admin: I ask my readers this does this comment deserve two links. Mystery shopper uses Comment Luv. So this person wanted two links for a four word comment that indicated they did not read the post! Happens everyday folks!

  4. Janice (1 comments) says:

The “scratch my back marketing” campaign is brilliant. This would separate the spammers from those who are at least respecting the essence of the post. Too bad that there are a lot of sites that were forced to revert to no follow because of spamming abuse. I do hope that they would take this idea of yours into consideration, and bring back the benefits of a do-follow commenting system.

By the way, Keywordluv is awesome. I think that most people, in a bid to boost their Google ranking for the specified keywords, use keywords instead of names when commenting especially on NoFollow free blogs, and I admit that I am guilty of that as well. But I’m not comfortable with doing that because I would want to at least do the decency of having my name in the “name tab”, because after all, that’s what it’s meant for. Props to Stephen Cronin for building Keywordluv and I hope that more bloggers would consider using it and share the “luv”.

    Admin: Janice,

Thanks for the great comment, but I don’t allow links to sex toy sites.

  5. skTheCoders from ACoding Help (7 comments) says:

Wow, I am surprised to hear that blog owners actually claim that their blogs are dofollow when they aren’t. That is beyond petty. Sorry to hear that your work has been marginalized. It has always suck when a few ruin the fun for many. If you are still list building, my site at (Link Deleted)is still dofollow.

Admin: This is a good example of why the Do Follow lists were removed your comment links are No Follow.

  6. Steve from seo marketing (1 comments) says:

I like your take. I think nofollow and dofollow have become a big headache for both webmasters and Google alike.

Remember that their algorithm is always changing, I wouldn’t be surprised if they eventually scrapped the whole nofollow/dofollow or heavily modified that algorithm, because its intended purpose and how they are being used today is ridiculous.

I am also thinking about making my blog comments dofollow, after all if someone provides a comment that adds value to my blog, why shouldn’t they be rewarded?

SEO is an acronym for “search engine optimization” or “search engine optimizer.” Deciding to hire an SEO is a big decision that can potentially improve your site and save time, but you can also risk damage to your site and reputation. Make sure to research the potential advantages as well as the damage that an irresponsible SEO can do to your site. Many SEOs and other agencies and consultants provide useful services for website owners, including:
Review of your site content or structure
Technical advice on website development: for example, hosting, redirects, error pages, use of JavaScript
    Content development
Management of online business development campaigns
    Keyword research
    SEO training
Expertise in specific markets and geographies.

Admin: Seems like a sales pitch to me!

  8. Keith from small business information (3 comments) says:

I certainly believe in the do follow thing, but it is crazy because if Google and others change their algorithms all your set up and spam fighting is diminished. Seems soon as you find ways to spread the word about your blog, the rules get changed and your back to square one. (Sales pitch deleted)

  9. case from New Media Strategies (1 comments) says:

“I would prefer to be part of the solution.” I can almost feel your frustration… dofollow/nofollow what could be the better choice? Hmm… I think it’s just a matter of educating people of doing the right thing. Do not discourage people from commenting but instead encourage, but also teach them how to comment it the right way. People have the technology and power but they are relatively like savages who are always hungry to spam.

Hi, I’m sorry for commenting on this post because I have no idea for contacting you. Can you tell me where you got the template in this blog because it’s very interesting and nice. If you’re gonna answer my question I will be so grateful to you and recognize my friends about this blog.

    Admin: Its a custom theme

  11. Angila (1 comments) says:

When the do follow thing started it was an awesome idea. Exactly “Scratch My Back Marketing” system. But shame to black hatters and to those people who just write “Thanks”, “Nice Post” etc… for the sake of backlink. It would have been a very fruitful.

I’m sure google will soon handle the do follow links specially from blog comments though I’m sure it will still help for SEO like reciprocal links. They do carry some weight.

By the way, I too have a do follow blog untill this day and I don’t have much problem approving comments. Most of the spamming tactics is handled by “akismet” plugin and I only approve them once a week.

Admin: Great comment terrible site… Shame on You! I check who I link too!!!!!!!!!!!!

  12. Cover Letters (1 comments) says:

There is an SEO tool to indicate if a certain blog is ‘do follow’ or ‘no follow’. Once the commenters will be highlighted in red then it means it is a no follow blog, so in short.. no highlight means ‘do follow’. Oh yeah BTW, it only applies fo moziila fx.

  13. mark from bodum french press (6 comments) says:

I completely agree with you about hating the fact that blog owners will advertise their blogs to be Do Follow when they are actually No Follow. I think it’s awesome that you are so vocal about using keyword luv, and then actually following through with it.
Admin: Hi Mark, Thanks for all the great comments that you have been leaving. We believe that if we talk the talk then we had better walk the walk!

Well I have to say SEO is just evolving with each passing day and there is a sea of information and techniques to be mastered to do it right. The issue of do-follow and no-follow commenting has really been a matter of debate for a loong time now and link buiding it is said is not complete without a good number of do-follow blog commenting. But as far as getting traffic to a website is concerned, do-follow links should not really be a very important issue.

Admin: This comment is copied and pasted it has appeared here before.

  16. ris from Kmorgage refinance calculator (1 comments) says:

Thanks for cleaning up the list. I maintain my own list which powers a paid search engine and find that the turnover of dofollow is very high. I noticed a couple of nofollows have crept into this list. You should add a form or tell people how to give you updates.

Admin: This comment has been making the rounds now for several weeks!

  17. Johnny (1 comments) says:

All this internet marketing stuff can be so boring when you have to deal with other marketers out there. In fact everyone is looking for a backlink to their website/blog.

Could this be Google’s fault? I don’t know. But one thing is sure: as long as Nofollow tag exist on a blog I will refuse to comment. Because of the question “What’s in it for me”.

As you see, I will not deny that I look for backlinks too. Otherwise how will I get my website ranked?

The fact that so many people get this wrongly and try to spam everything and anything their eyes touches is the real problem. Not the fact that you get a backlink (which as a sole link means not much).

How negatively can a nofollow tag can affect your website is obvious. Look for the numbers of comments and activity on these nofollow websites.

There is another way around this mister. People tend to grow a blog to a certain PR and only then change it to a nofollow blog. But they immediately see a decrease in traffic and overall activity because comments are the heart of content, which in turn brings more visitors.

  18. aj from RSIndore (1 comments) says:

    Hi,
Nofollow blogs instructs search engines that a hyperlink does not influence the target’s link during search engine indexing.dofollow blogs are those which do not follow nofollow. You have shared nice information. I am really appreciated with you.

Thanks for sharing such a valuable information.

  19. att from MSEO Hampshire (1 comments) says:

It’s a tough situation to describe, but one I frequently go through with clients.

Making comment posts on any blog is beneficial IF the blog is topic-relevant, and your comment is meaningful (ideally it should be insightful, or at least describe a valid opinion). If you get a follow-link out of it - bonus. If not, nevermind.

People still click no-follow links, and as long as the blog doesn’t have too much comment traffic, a really good comment will normally get you a visit - and for smaller clients, every visit (literally) counts!

That said, there has always been a buzz about nofollow/dofollow (since it all began) - you have to remember though - that the internet is about links. If noone shares the “juice”, I suspect things will flip back to the pre-nofollow days, where “juice” is shared by default. To some extent, thats how it should be!

To be frank - I am here for link ! Yeah but after reading the story & real dilemma - Yes people leave the very bad comments - “thank you for great post” , “loved it so much” , “useful tip” etc etc… they dont think doesnt modereator have some other work - Do follow is to help people not to annoy moderator.

Its sad to scratching the back for the good cause. I understand your pain.

Blogger is not asking for money but he doesn’t expects spams too. Award his story by useful reviews.

  21. Fountains (1 comments) says:

In my opinion blog spam is done mostly by automated bots. So it does not matter if it is set to follow or nofollow. You get the posts either way. Nobody is there to say darn, it’s a nofollow, maybe we should stop doing this.

Admin: I guess you don’t have a blog!

  22. Eren from homemaking (1 comments) says:

I completely agree with you and even did a whole interview with an SEO about the no follow. Matt Cutts has already said that no follow links do not give you any kind of SEO points for ranking purposes.
I also use do follow on my main blog and when I start my wahm blog I will definitely use comment luv too. I think it’s a great way to help each other out.
    All the best,
    Eren

do follow websites are great …. I don’t understand why more sites aren’t… I know you get more spam, but that can be managed….
I think people really don’t like helping others, even when it doesn’t cause them to go out of their way! We are all trying to establish a recognizable web presence and do follow sites can help that …. people just rather not… we live in a ME society, so helping others is an after thought at best.

  24. Andy from KrakowApartments (1 comments) says:

Hi, I think that dofollow blogs offer a win-win for both parties. The webmaster gets additional content that they can edit and vet as they see fit. The blogger gets the opportunity to get a link if they add something of value to the blog. Its great to see that the nofollow craze has finally started to give way to some common sense. I also think that in the future we may see alterations in the big G’s algorithm that make all of our hard work null and void. But only time will tell until then ‘bloggers keep on blogging’ and ‘webmasters keep on looking for ways to reward your contributors’.

  25. Richard Curtis (3 comments) says:

All of the commenters about me have stressed the same thing. It is sad to see that many people have abused the do follow blogs. i know a lot of people have done to these blogs and posted a bunch of comments, just to embed their links in that site.

The idea of linking building should only be done with a good comment. A lot of people are also paid to comment. I really like the Scratch My back Marketing. i think it will have a huge amount of potential. Good Luck with that!

Admin: Richard you spammed me with the same comment three times so I think you should look in a mirror!

  26. eorge from GBaby Gifts (1 comments) says:

It’s not often you come across blogs where at least people are honest about why they are posting a comment. I understand the need to delete the idiots whose only contributions stretch to “nice post” or “yeah, I agree.” Blogging has become such a vast back links market, and whole businesses are being set up in support of it. So from an SEO perspective, I like what you are trying to achieve here. As you say, fewer useful comments far outweigh the spam laden topics. Much like backlinks themselves - I’d rather have a couple of really strong content driven links than a hundred non-related ones.

Admin: We don’t link to non English sites.

I find it very interesting that this commenter finds the article interesting, especially since I eliminated what was in the post… The Do Follow Blogs.

  30. admin (111 comments) says:

    Morgan,

I could not disagree with you more. Your spam comments will likely be deleted… And it has the effect of reducing the pool of blogs that are willing to be Do Follow. You have a short term strategy that hurts us all for your gain.

You are a classic example of what I am talking about. You visit my site and never made a comment until it has too late to make a difference. You then went and about destroying a very nice project and I am supposed it sit back and continue to allow this to happen… I have finally said I will no longer to part of this.

I will gladly accept the 40% drop in traffic from you and those like you. All you ever did was take! I wish to focus on a smaller pool of business owners who understand the concept of Scratch My Back Marketing.

  31. admin (111 comments) says:

    Yes,

I have considered a membership. However, charging someone is what others did and they sent people to my site. I didn’t much like that idea.

The problem is if I charge people I still encourage bad behavior. I don’t want to be part of the problem. I would prefer to be part of the solution.

  32. admin (111 comments) says:

    Meka,

It is a shame that nice people like yourself loose in the process. I thought the idea was a good one but comment spammers ruined a good thing. We had put over 1,000 hours in the project!

  33. Tony (1 comments) says:

Using the plugin coupled with akismet plugin saves the time in removing the spam, bulk actions, delete all

  34. admin (111 comments) says:

Good question Wayne… The comment spammers gain because they play the numbers game. When I was a No Follow blog I ignored them. But when I went Do Follow I cleaned up my comments and dumped 300 or so comments.

Comment spammers play the numbers game. They would not do it if it didn’t work. The scrapper is a whole different story. They have the potential to really hurt your rankings. Google says they do a good job of handling duplicate content but I don’t believe them.

Last year someone copied our Do Follow list onto another site. Our page droped from the # 5 position to page # 7. After the content was removed our rankings was restored.

For me I don’t much care if my blog posts get copied but our static pages are a different story. Many of those pages rank on the first page in Google for the services that we sell. So we could suffer when these get ripped off!

I use a site called Copyscape to check for problems and I have found two occasions where we have been scrapped this year. I had one site taken down.

  35. admin (111 comments) says:

I guess one person blunt is another persons hostile. I didn’t see your comment as supportive the way you did… Oh, well!

  36. admin (111 comments) says:

Niche Blueprint is a paid service that how they make money. They glean the work of others and repackage it and sell it. Then the guy comes here and tells me how he encourages people to leave useful comments but they didn’t. They used my resources and never said thanks. We are talking thousands of visitors and only a handful of comments.

But to be fair the same thing was being done by others that were not using the program. Blog owners eventually decided to drove to switch back.

Now, I to encouraged people to leave useful comments but these greedy me first folks didn’t care. They though saying “nice list” should qualify them to get a link.

Originally I didn’t care because the blog was No Follow. When I went Do Follow I began to care a whole bunch. Now, it takes a 20 word comment to get a link.

Even with this policy noted at the end of each post I still get short comments, even from other bloggers.

Got something to say?
