Flirting With The Big Leagues Of SEO – We Have Arrived
February 20, 2010
Flirting With The Big Leagues Of SEO: This was one of the first posts that I wrote when we launched this blog back in May of 2008. I thought that perhaps may regular readers might enjoy this look back.
Our Business has had tremendous success obtaining first page placement in the Goggle search results for SEO related search queries. This has all been accomplished in just over 14 months. We first began to study search engine optimization back in October of 2006. Our website developer, who offers SEO, told us if we ever got onto the first page it would take six months. (This was for a house cleaning business that we closed to launch Tucson SEO Solutions.) This is the standard line of many SEO providers.
The website that we are talking about was a local house cleaning service, Your Fresh Start. That website went to the first page of the Google results within 3 days and has been there ever since. We have since closed that business and have been providing SEO services since we launched our site in May of 2007. We currently are ranked # 1 nationally on Google for 5 searches that include the word SEO in the query string.
It truly blows me away every time I think about our success. We tell you this not to brag, but to verify that we do know our business well. However, one keyword search has eluded me thus far and it is “Local SEO.’ Since local SEO is the cornerstone that this business is built upon we would like to be on the first page for this search.
We re-launched this website in mid April of this year using WordPress. We had settled in a regular spot on the third page around position # 35 and it stayed that way for two months. Then we re-evaluated the pages and tweaked our website. This adjustment had a positive impact. Then in June we started using forums that allows us to create Do Follow anchor text links that read “Local SEO.”
The website moved up the ranking for this keyword phrase and settled in at the # 17 position. Then in July we began to place links in every blog post that targeted our sales and services pages. Those anchor text links pointed to our other pages that we wanted to specifically target to increase there presence in the Google SERP’s both nationally and locally.
Recently, we have actually flirted with the first page of Google landing temporarily at the #4 position. We eventually settled in at the #11. For our website to stay on the first page will indeed be a difficult task. It is because local SEO is written about often on authority blogs and Forums. These established websites have a huge advantage over a much newer website such as ours. (We can now usually be found in the # 5 position for Local SEO now and we are in the # 1 position for Local SEO Services.)
However, they are most likely not talking about proving SEO for local websites, as we do. When those in our industry talk about local SEO they are talking about free listings in the Google and Yahoo local business maps. This is a hot topic that when written about on authority blogs tends to bump our site down the list. So yes, we are flirting with the first page of results we are not there yet, but then we like a good challenge.
We highlighted the changes that we made in and effort to point out that SEO is never a one and done process. When we re-launched our website and did not get the results that we wanted we took another look to see what else could be done better. Some of what we tried was just fine tuning. Still other efforts were experiments based on knowledge that we gleaned from other SEO professionals.
Update 02/20/2010: We are now definitely in the big leagues of the SEO ranks. There are a couple of key things that we did in 2009 that have rocked this site onto the first page of Google for over 80 keyword phrases. In January I began to implement the link building program that I call Scratch My Back Marketing. I also added header tags. Then I became a relentless backlinks builder.
Now, I still make mistakes when building links and stick links where they were not intended and I am given the boot. There are plenty of places on most social media sites where you can add some link code. The bio areas come to mind as one area. Some times the code is turned into links only to later be removed or the account is deleted. But that doesn’t happen often. What has happened is that I have been very good at locating web 2.0 social sites that allow blog posts. I simply re-write some of my 350 posts and place them on these sites. I end the posts by signing off with a call to action which usually includes a link or two.
The downside of all of this has been the economy going south. But I am still in business when others have closed there doors and I am grateful for this.

Got something to say?

I have thoroughly enjoyed reading every word of your blog even though I had to go to the optometrist and get my prescription increased. You have mountains of content here and I have learned so much. Thanks for all you do.
I find it amazing you’ve made such a dramatic impact here in Arizona in such a short period of time. I have spent my talents helping dive shops around the world for the last 2 years but with the assault on local business I decided to help some of the small business here. Are you guys using hubspot at all. I love this tool when dealing with a client and if you want to leave it here in the comments for others I have found it generates activity. (link deleted)
ADMI: I have used Hub Pages Only A few times.
I’m glad that you have had so much success with your rankings, especially the highly competitive “local seo” keyword phrase. But I wonder, do people looking for local SEO services actually use this sort of keyword phrase in their query? For example, I think that if I knew nothing about SEO but was looking for my site to rank highly in search engines, I wouldn’t search for “local SEO” because I have no familiarity with that terminology. But I suppose your business is living proof that ranking for these terms is valuable…
