Getting Accurate Google Search Results

If you have been around search for any length of time you know that Google is the big dog of search in the US. No surprise there right? The problem has been finding out how you truly rank in the Google search results can be difficult at best. The problem is related to Google feature called personalized search.

When you search for anything using Google it records your how you interact with its results. The idea here is that if you clicked on a result when searching that result will be favored the next time you check on the keyword phrase. Google determined that this was more important to you and that website will move up in the rankings for searches that you do in the future.

Well, this causes problems for those who are checking on their search rankings. Personalized search then ends up providing you different results than the regular public sees. In the past, the solution was to just avoid clicking on any results or using Google or searching from outside your Google accounts. This worked very well.

Then Google started recording information by ip address and not just when you where in your accounts. This caused big time problems for those who wanted information that was not tainted by Google’s personalized search.

I was getting regular calls from people who though that they were buried on page two of the results. When I searched for their targeted phrase I discovered that they actually were ranking well on the first page. This is what was happening. They would search for their targeted phrases and then click on their competitions websites. This acted to push down their websites in the search results.

Every time they clicked on a competitors search result they were pushing these sites higher in their search results. If they clicked on their website it would push their results higher. These has been vexing website owners for some time now.

Many people have clamored for a way to turn off personalized search so here is that solution. After you have completed your search query go to the address bar and add this “&pws=0” without the quotation marks to the end of  the address in the address bar. This in effect strips out your personalized influences. Then clicked to do the search again.  The net result is that you will obtain unbiased search result using this method.

This is something that I have been writing about for the last few years. It has become a passion for me. I realized this was causing people to spend money on SEO services that they did not need. I know I was turning away lots of  business because they were already ranking well. They just didn’t understand how personalized search works. I had my doubts that other companies were doing the same.

The problem here is that this solution isn’t  practical for those who target dozens if not hundreds of keyword phrases. While this solution works its causes you do have to do two searches to get the correct results, but it’s better than not knowing for sure. It would be nice to be able to disable this feature.
