It Is Hard Finding A Useful Comment

This post was written back in 2009.

If you were to bother to visit the comments section of this blog you might be surprised by the lack of links that have been awarded this month. It has gotten so bad that I have been considering going back to No Follow again.

No one bothers to read the comment policy, and those that comment on that post, even these didn’t read it or care. Maybe the Scratch My Back plugin gives them a safe sense of security. None the less, a non quality 150 character comment will not get you a link. This is a moderated blog. If you want a link you have to follow the rules of this blog.

The biggest offenders are those who ignore how to use Keyword Luv and just include keywords. You will never get a link here doing that. (Keyword and Comment Luv plugins were removed long ago.) That doesn’t stop these lazy bums. So I figure it like this, I will stay Do Follow and I will use these spam comments to my advantage.

I simply remove the backlink and use the comments anyways. Then I include a short explanation and a link to the comment policy. These people are so greedy and short sighted that they fail to notice. Maybe, they do it just to waste my time.

I don’t know, but what I do know is this. I get about 10 of these a day. I rarely get a comment that is worthy of a link anymore. Yet, these spammy thoughtless and clueless comments are doing me a big favor. Especially the guy who represents a lawyer and he leaves 6 – 8 comments at a time. He even comments on the same posts over and over. He provides lots of fresh content but never gets a link!

Here is how they benefit the blog. The blog targets the keyword phrases Phoenix SEO and Niche SEO. Both these these phrases rank in the top 5 of Google and these rankings are powered by spam! Without these comments this page would not rank nearly as well. These spammers have tuned out to be a great source of fresh content. Even though its bad content, it is content never the less!

Update 04/21/2011: I removed all pages that once included my Do Follow lists. This greatly reduced the amount of visitors, but it also reduced the number of spam comments. These lists had used those spam comments to rank well for several searches related to Do Follow blogs or forums. This went on for two years after the content had been removed. Yes, these empty lists ranked extremely well based almost entirely on spam!

But I finally bored with this game. Away went the posts and as well as most of the spam… almost over night! Plus, I am using several really good spam filters to avoid auto bot spam now.

  1. Since my company has entered the world of blog commenting for links, I have gotten some insight into the world of spam commenters. I have explained that it takes time to make a valuable comment on a blog, and that non-valuable comments are likely to look like spam and never be approved, defeating the purpose of commenting.

But when it comes to businesses using blog commenting for link building, the goal is to do as many comments as fast as possible. And on top of that, there was little training as to the different aspects of blog commenting (looking for comment policies, what is Keyword Luv / Comment Luv, etc.) Basically, everyone was told to skim articles, make a “useful” quick comment and move on.

I’m hoping that after a few months of this, we will go back and compare the ratio of fast comments vs. valuable ones that are actually approved. Then maybe they will see the benefit of slowing down and making more approvable comments.

I agree with you. I don’t like the blitzkrieg idea of blasting the internet with as many blog comments as possible. I try to read the material and understand it. Afterwords if I feel I can make a worthwhile comment I will. I hope others do the same to me. Speed commenting is not for me. I hope you idea of worthwhile comments is the better method.

You might agree but you don’t know how to use Keyword Luv. Admin: Comment does not pass our Comment Policy Guidelines

That is a common practice. From the whole bunch of comments only one or two really make sense, the rest is just a stupid spam.
Scratch My Back plugin is really an interesting solution – such comments like “thanx., great post” or “great blog” are automatically rejected. It would be also a great idea to install captcha plugin.

Admin: I have no need for a captcha I use Tan Tan Noodles it kills bot spam.

Very informative and useful content is there in your post. Its very helpful for me and I am experiencing the change in my own website. I know when I first started blogging and would complain in a post that no one is commenting . I always had one blogger comment that I needed to ASK A QUESTION! Not that I always do, but I know it sure helps both to encourage a comment as well as think of my own question on someone elses blog so I can answer when I read a post that I want to comment on.

  6. I’m glad that you remove back links on people who don’t respect keyword luv. I think it is pretty ridiculous that people don’t even read your comment policy, especially since they are wasting both your time and their time because you will not give them a do follow link anyway. Sorry to hear that all of the worthless comments are getting you down, but as a fellow blogger, I understand.

  7. I think a lot of people have this same problem. Comments like “Nice Post” are the one’s that really annoy me – even on other people’s blog. Does it really take that long to read a post and write something useful? I don’t think so, and I read blogs that I actually find interesting and want to read.

In the long run these spammers just ruin it for themselves, and unfortunately everyone else as well.

Admin: This is one reason why I no longer blog comment for links!

  8. Yeah I agree. But it seems its the only way one can multiply links easily. We all know that Directory listing is dead and we must move on for today’s trend in seo link building.

Admin: Your statement comes from inexperience. Blog commenting is a very poor choice when it comes to link building. Directory listing are not dead. You just have to use human edited directories and follow their rules.
