Scratch My Back Marketing Explained

Scratch My Back Marketing Explained
I have been discussing what I call Scratch My Back Marketing since the beginning of the year. I figured that it was finally time to write a specific post on the topic. Scratch My Back Marketing is based on a lifestyle and spiritual principal of giving to get. That’s right as in is better to give than receive. Now, I have nothing against receiving especially if it involves material resources such as capital. However, for our purposes I will settle for great comments left on the blog.
When I reference giving I do so with link building efforts in mind. If you have been around internet marketing for any length of time you will have discovered the importance of links. More specifically I am referring to other websites that link to your site. These links are known as backlinks. They are the foundation of Google’s algorithm. Applying SEO to a website is good but it needs to be combined with a steady link building effort to be effective. Acquiring these links is becoming a huge challenge.
Now a days, we must locate social media websites, blogs, and forums that allow user generated content to build links. Google has made it very clear that it does like the practice of buying and selling links. For these sites to be useful in gaining higher search rankings these sites must provide what is known as Do Follow links. These Do Follow links have the ability to pass link juice. It is this juice that will assist your website in gaining and maintaining high search engine rankings.
The idea behind Scratch My Back Marketing is that the website user will exchange useful content and comments for useful Do Follow links. This is the genesis of our approach. This same approach can also be applied to sites that offer No Follow links. These No Follow links will not assist you in achieving higher search ranking. But they are useful in generating website traffic and business. This way both the website user and the website owner join together for the higher good of both. It is a classic example of a win/win situation. This blog requires a 20 word minimum to acquire an anchor text Keyword Luv Do Follow link.
The reality is that those short drive by spammy comments will likely get deleted on most blogs worth posting on. I ask is it better to post 10 short thank you comments and maybe get one or two links or post 4 good comment on good blogs and get them all accepted? Both scenarios will take about the same amount of time. Yes, leaving good comments takes time but it does pay off with better results for your efforts. This is often knows as your Return On Investment. The investment here is time or money if you are paying for some one to build links for you.
Quality comments also lend a certain amount respect and will assist in building a blogs reputation. These quality comment also provide what is commonly known as the fresh content bump. Google and the other search engines often reward fresh content by moving a blog or site up in the search rankings.
There will likely be an additional benefit if enough people by into the concept of Scratching My Back Marketing. It should encourage more bloggers to become or stay Do Follow. Let’s face it folks someone as got to stand up as a voice of reason here. The ability to acquire useful Do Follow links is getting more difficult everyday.
Update 08/27/2009: When you leave a comment you will see the Scratch My Back Marketing plugin in action. Just asking people to leave a useful comment of 20 words did not work. They mostly ignored this on their way to attempting to get a link. So after six months of being ignored we are forcing the issue. You are now required to leaving a minimum comment of 150 characters to acquire a link and only if the comment is relevant to the discussion.

Scratch My Back Marketing Explained…
This program is about the Marketing Program Called Scratch My Back Marketing. It focuses on ethical link building….
I always thought that google banned all the link exchanges and stuff? Isn’t this kinda similar? Wouldn’t it get you in trouble with search engines?
I completely agree that a these links are essential and do not hurt the blogger that give them out one bit.
I plan on having a blog in a directory of my main blog that will just be about blogging and starting out online.
This blog will have comment luv installed.
Since I believe with all my heart that there is no such thing as a page rank leak there really is no reason whatsoever not to “do follow” comments – that is unless you were trying to do “page rank sculpting” – which with the new google update has gone down the drain.
The other reason why it would be justifiable to no follow everything is if you don’t want to bother checking out the commenters’ website.
So all in all I truly hope more bloggers start to Do Follow their comments.
All the best,
Eren

I appreciate not requiring a registration for the blog to leave comments, especially if you do want your blog to remain active as a source of fresh content to get noticed by Google.
You might want to correct the statement in your post:
“Google has made it very clear that it does like the practice of buying and selling links.”
I believe guest posts are the real ’scratch my back marketing’ method. But sure dofollow blogs also fall in the same category. I usually stick to 3 approved comments to get a dofollow link but your 20 word method is not bad either, infact it might actually be better because it will keep the ‘thank you’ type of comments away.
I will definitely participate in your site with dofollow blogs.
Admin: You should read the comment policy before posting.
I am very new to the whole SEO world, specifically link building. I have gone back and read many of the previous posts and learned an amazing amount. I also got a chance to check out your posted results from your Google searches, very impressive. Its nice to see, because that is where I desire my company to be in our industry…In a short amount of time you have really helped our company out and proven your SEO abilities. Thanks!
I am glad to have the opportunity to scratch others backs, and hope to offer it to all of you soon.
My blog is just getting underway, but it will be ready for comments in a few days.
Since I have a site that sells binoculars for astronomy purposes, and you all are in the middle of the desert – I expect a lot of hobbyists from your area to stop by and visit!
Thanks,
Ted
Admin: Ted, Great comment but you need to learn how to use Keyword Luv If you want a link. Also very little of my traffic comes from Tucson.
His guys,
Haven’t been here in a couple of weeks. I have been working on a couple of different blogs, etc. BTW, thanks for the turn on to TANTAN Noodles and for stopping by and scratching back after the shout out.
I thought I’d stop by and see what I have missed and return the favor :)
I just re-read the “political and religion” requirement. Guess I’ll have to stay away from that.
You might want to mention in your policy that WP and other blog software developers are automatically nofollow and they don’t make it easy to change. You have to find the right plugin to change the follow attribute and that works with any other plugins you have installed.
Thanks again. I have and am still learning a lot from you guys.

Admin: Actually, all blogging software comes as No Follow, but the process of adding a plugin is very straight forward for most. I’m glad to see you back!
These are exactly the types of blogs that I love. Internet marketing blogs are becoming a commodity almost, but you’re able to provide extra value with this back scratching concept you discuss. Thanks for this wonderful marketing concept.
Admin: Very interesting this blogger will not approve my comments but he wants his comments approved. This is sad as I left a really great comment on his blog!
Hi all… Just dropped by to see how the ‘do follow’ , ‘no follow’ debate is doing. I see that comment spamming is still rife! I noticed the comment on the other post regarding Scratch My Back Marketing and led me here.
I saw the list of criteria for inclusion in your future members site for do follow bloggers and wanted to know what conditions need to be met for Affiliate Marketers?
I’m just in the process of setting up quality websites for several niche markets in this arena (affiliate marketing). I know many people don’t really like Affiliates but if done correctly they can be as respectable as any other online business.
As i am still on the SEO learning curve and working out the ‘mechanics’ of how Google ranks sites(at least the known stuff anyway), I’m still trying to get my head around how the whole ‘KeywordLuv’ ‘CommentLuv’ thing works and benefits.
Oh and one other thing, I had an idea for commenters leaving less than 20 words. Would it not be possible to code in a condition in the ‘Speak your mind’ box to reject comments that fall below that figure?
It’s good to come back here to see quality info. I’m thankful for finding this site purely because it taught me how not to be spammy!
all the best
Admin: Andy thanks for the great comment, but I am not linking to a website that has one post and no comments. It’s not going to happen. My visitors do not want to be lured through a link to a site like this. It doesn’t offer anything worth linking too!
I don’t like affiliate sites that lure to to their site hoping that you will be frustrated and click on a link to another site. That’s a business model that I don’t appreciate. Now, I would not have a problem allowing an affiliate site into my new site, if they did in-depth product reviews and actually had comments from others that were not their friends. Many affiliates ban together and comment on each others blogs. Those will not make it either. The idea behind Scratch My Back Marketing is about win/win marketing and adding value. It isn’t designed as a monetizing program.
Wow, I really like this idea, it’s pretty hard to find Blogs that do have a do follow capability, it’s even harder to find one that has the capability and also has good page rank. I’ll be book marking this blog for sure. Thanks
That was an engrossing article about how to generate the link, and i really appreciate the effort you have put in this article and am also very much interested in your “scratch my back marketing”, i think the list you have made up is really perfect and the real blog’s which share some real useful information only comes into the list. I m impressed by your tips about getting back links through posting a genuine comment.I think it really works :).So,here m trying to get my back link :P
Find it funny that people get so excited about links and “search engines”. Remember folks, way before Google, we used to post and exchange links for fun and to help others find us. The web was built upon links and the web belongs to us NOT Google. Cheers!
Boris,
You’re someone that really seems familiar with the rules of no follow blogs. We’ve been blogging since April but a lot of this stuff is new to us so we’re pretty wet around the ears. However it was great to receive your post tonight on our blog, we appreciate it.
My Business Partner and I are pretty strong in video, getting links, setting up blogs and most of this we learned in the last month. So I guess now is the time to buckle down and learn about commenting because that is what will keep a website fresh in googles eyes.
I’ve only put up a few niche websites on various topics and I’m already convinced it’s the most fun thing in the world to do. Feel free to come post on any of our blogs anytime. We’ll be putting up about one per week. I took a Joel Petersons The Mini Site Formula course and he said you could put up 3 per day.
It’s a great course but I have to disagree with him about the speed.
I think the key is to spend one good week on a quality site, and unless you do a few of them most people don’t have a clue at what it takes to get one right.
Thanks Again,
Brian Garvin

It’s an interesting idea – I hope it works out. Getting quality incoming links is becoming more and more difficult, and its great that people like you are making the effort to help out. I don’t envy you filtering through the spam comments though!
Admin: Sam, I no longer get much spam as I use Tan Tan Noodles.
There are a couple of plugins available to remove the no follow. There are some great anti-spam plugins too!
Admin: We use some of the best anti spam plugins available but that do not address drive by comments like nice post!
Hi, your site back link structure is an important aspect of your search engine optimization and relates to the number and quality of the sites that link to your site.

Great idea with the 20 word comment…although I might actually make it a bit more for my blog. I’m so sick of the “thanks for the post” garbage comments everybody is leaving nowadays.
This is the coolest idea around. I think the scratch my back marketing program is perfect for all small website owners trying to get ahead in the linking world. We all need to get together and work hard so that all of us can increase PR and SEO rankings. Thanks Again.
I really like your idea. It’s unfortunate that we must go to such lengths to ensure a fair exchange of value and even the possibility of developing a relationship over time.
Personally, I’ve worked on a number of blogs in the past with the philosophy of Do-Follow, however I’ve been forced to moderate the heck out of the comments to purge the “thanks” and “nice post” responses.
Admin: Bill, great comment. We no longer get those drive bye comment after I installed our Scratch My Back Marketing plugin. It should be available to the public on or about the 15th of September.

Admin: Sounds great but you are a paid link builder. If you checked your work you would realize that you haven’t gotten any links here!
I haven’t put keywordluv or commentluv on my blog yet and I hope you still give me a link because I am going to do it as soon as I post this comment. I just wanted to test it out first and see if the sites were really allowing people to post. I guess the key is giving true content. Thanks for the help!

Hey-
I am back and again much appreciative of your forum for encouraging the camaraderie that was more common on the web in the early days. I am proud that my blog is dofollow, even if it means I have to spend a few minutes now and then rejecting silly autogenerated spam from weird Russian pharmaceutical sites.
Anyone who is even passingly interested in binoculars or astronomy is welcome to leave a real post and get a link!
Thanks,
Ted

Admin: Comment does not pass our Comment Policy Guidelines
This is a very interesting idea and could cut down on the amount of spam people get with irrelevant comments on their blog. Of course the trick is to actually get enough bloggers to work on this so its effective.

First, academic term paper writers need to choose a proper subject, as a helpful hint is taking a part of a particular text and explore it attentively. An objective of organizing a research paper a summary of the paper to determine if it is relevant to my study. To this end, many journals require the following sections, submitted in the order listed, each section to start on a new page.

Admin: Comment does not pass our Comment Policy Guidelines
Nice topic .i always prefer its blogs and specially dofollow . The motto of this blog is great we must share some useful content through such kind of social medias.
Admin: Comment does not pass our Comment Policy Guidelines
This is hilarious. I love how you’ve left the spammers comments out in the wild here – swinging in the wind so to speak!
Great Idea. I’ve lived by this axiom (… givers gain) in my life for many years now and always, always… what goes around, comes around.
FWIW – Comments and links are still valuable from no follow sites as well. If every link back to your site is do follow, it’s “not natural” and you risk a penalty.
Admin: Hi Mark, I do so very much love to turn the tables on spammers… It surprises me a bit that so few people understand the concept of giving to get… I would think that eventually someone will notice that I didn’t get to rank both #1 and #2 for backlinks building services by spamming my way to the top!
It is unfortunate that that these days you seem to get a lot more spam comments than “real” legitimate comments. Regardless if your blog is do-follow or no-follow, every comment adds to the content on that page, so why not take the time to read the article and respond with something that’s actually worth reading…
Also, +1 to Mark’s comment. Just a few of my favorites that I’ve seen around on this blog from the Admin in response to spammers:
- Thanks for the fresh spam sandwich
- Straight from the spam folder to you…
Gold!
Well there you go. I’ve added a comment that I thought would be something worthwhile and haven’t completed the website correctly. How’s that for a newb!
