I don’t understand why anyone leaves those short little comments of only a few words. I mean, do they really think that the blog owner is going to approve it? I guess they must figure that there are some blogs that go unmoderated and their comment will stick, but like you said – most will get deleted. Bloggers want GOOD COMMENTS. It helps their blog because it shows that the internet community is engaging in their site, so they must have something good to offer. Thanks for implementing the 20word/150 character policy; nice plugin.

I guess you could say Scratch My Back Marketing is also about making the world a better place and putting in the effort. Why should spammers get something for free? and the corollary, why shouldn’t those who are really contributing not be rewarded? I like this concept, and I like the term you have come up with to describe it – you scratch my back, I scratch yours. It is really good white hat SEO and nice to see the number one SEO practitioner in Tucson, Arizona wears a white hat!

Since there is a plugin like the one in this comment box that counts the number of characters you have typed, I think spammers will be put off. But one thing you have to note is that most spammers now post long comments on blogs without even visiting the blog.

Admin: Yes, this is true and this plugin may be part of that reason! PS I don’t link to non English sites.

Thanks for that informative post. I came across this ” Scratch My Back Marketing” few months back which relates it to Parable saying “It’s better to give than to receive” and I guess It actually applies to digital world nowadays. SEO is something that really needs hardwork, dedication and patience.

It is unfortunate that that these days you seem to get a lot more spam comments than “real” legitimate comments. Regardless if your blog is do-follow or no-follow, every comment adds to the content on that page, so why not take the time to read the article and respond with something that’s actually worth reading…

Also, +1 to Mark’s comment. Just a few of my favorites that I’ve seen around on this blog from the Admin in response to spammers:
- Thanks for the fresh spam sandwich
- Straight from the spam folder to you…

This is hilarious. I love how you’ve left the spammers comments out in the wild here – swinging in the wind so to speak!

Great Idea. I’ve lived by this axiom (… givers gain) in my life for many years now and always, always… what goes around, comes around.

FWIW – Comments and links are still valuable from no follow sites as well. If every link back to your site is do follow, it’s “not natural” and you risk a penalty.

Admin: Hi Mark, I do so very much love to turn the tables on spammers… It surprises me a bit that so few people understand the concept of giving to get… I would think that eventually someone will notice that I didn’t get to rank both #1 and #2 for backlinks building services by spamming my way to the top!

This is a very interesting idea and could cut down on the amount of spam people get with irrelevant comments on their blog.
