Search Engine Optimization Is A Numbers Game V 2.0
March 6, 2010
This post is another in a series that has been pulled from our 2008 archives. This post does a very good job of explaining how I personally view the practice of SEO. For me SEO is truly a numbers game. It really is not so much about how many web pages appear in a search result. This has very little correlation to how competitive a particular market is. It merely reflects the number of pages in the Google index that include these words.
This site competes in markets that have well over 100 Million pages appear in the Google index and we rank very well in these markets. However, these markets are no where near as competitive as the Phoenix SEO or Local SEO market which produce results that are lees than 10 Million. While I work on these almost everyday I still rank towards the bottom of the search results on the first page of the Google. Yet, I easily rank # 1 many time over for searches that produce 100 million or more results.
The number that really counts generally requires some research to determine. What you need to ascertain is the number of websites that are currently actively going after your keyword phrase. The next number that you need to obtain is the number of backlinks that each site has to the specific page being targeted. Now, you can begin to formulate a game plan to conquer your targeted keyword phrase. We in the industry call this a competitive analysis.
Just knowing how many backlinks that a web page has is just the beginning. You will now need to determine where these links are coming from. You will need to know if these links are Do Follow or No Follow and can you acquire links there as well. You will need to develop a link profile of your competitors. Once you have developed this information you will now know the number of links that should be required to overcome your competitors advantage and how much real competition that exists. Then, and only then, you will need to determine if this is a market that you want to fight to conquer. Let the games begin!
This is why I consider SEO to be a numbers game. Do you play to win?
Here is the original post:
SEO is as much a numbers game as anything else. Good basic SEO will only get you so far in the search rankings. We believe almost anyone with enough time and resources can obtain the first page of results for any search query. However, most companies do not have the funds or staff for such an undertaking. There are still many opportunities to reach the coveted first page of results.
Any successful SEO provider knows that if you go where the crowds aren’t you will be successful. That’s why so much effort goes into Keyword research. Keyword search, after all, is a billion dollar industry. You can look for long tail or obscure keywords to be successful. The huge benefit here is that using long tail search you have less sites competing for the keyword phrase that you have chosen, also your visitor is now highly targeted and ready for the sale.
A good example would be the search for “increased website traffic Tucson” There is no doubt that the person using this search query wants more traffic to their website and that it has a Tucson customer base. It just so happens that almost any day, if you did the search for “increased website traffic Tucson” you would find Tucson SEO Solutions in the #1 and #2 positions. We believe that you should practice what you preach or as we like to say if your going to talk the talk you have to walk the walk.
Many an SEO expert will read this and scoff, “That’s not a competitive search” and they are correct. However, it is the service that we provide and in our location. We should be at the top if we are any good at what we do. I am often amazed when I see companies offering SEO services and they can’t obtain first page rankings for themselves! This isn’t as uncommon as you might expect. We developed our keyword to reflect what we do and by our location. If you have a local business with a website you should be doing the same.
Do you need assistance developing your keywords to reflect your business and location?
