SEO Doesn’t Take Forever Or At Least Not For Me!
October 30, 2009
I am tired of hearing that SEO takes a long time. I don’t believe this to be true, at least not for me. Now, I will agree if you are in a competitive market and you have 20 – 30 websites determined to be on the first page of Google for your targeted keywords you will have a difficult if not nearly impossible task on your hands. This is especially true if any of these sites are several years old and the keyword phrase appears in their url.
There is one thing to remember about SEO. The difficulty factor has very little to do with the number of search results that a particular search produces. Last year we created some Do Follow list of blogs and forums. At that time a Google search for “Do Follow List” Produced around 156 Million results. Yet, our page that targeted this search went to the first page in less than a month and stayed there.
Why was this possible? The fact is that even though 156 Million pages included these three words on a page it still was not a competitive search at that time. This was not a search that was competitive. People wrote about the subject and that was about it. Since then the search has become much more competitive with many sites offering lists and Do Follow search capabilities and tools.
Several months ago I created a new page on the website that targets Holistic SEO. This search produces about 390,000 results. We were able to land that page on the first page within three weeks. This is not a highly competitive search by volume.
Last Month I re-titled my blog to include the keyword phrase Phoenix SEO. This search for Phoenix SEO only produced 304,000 results at that time. However, there are perhaps 20 companies actively targeting this phrase. Yet, in less than three weeks we were a regular on the first page of Google for this search. My advantage here is I have a blog that is regularly updated. It is mostly competing against static pages. Thus I have a huge advantage and the blog has gone as high as # 2.
Then on April 2 I created another yet another page That targets Arizona SEO Solutions. This is another low volume low but competitive search. After less than two weeks that page ranks # 2 in Google searches. Google often ranks new pages well. Staying there has proven much harder because it is competitive. There are about 20 companies that are actively pursuing this search. Now, I am no genius here. I don’t use any tricks and only I use good old basic SEO and basic ethical link building methods. I also pick my targets well. There is nothing automated here we manually acquire links . We earn links by adding value to other sites and by providing something worth linking too.
I shake my head when I read that SEO takes time.
So what do you think about this?

Got something to say?

I suppose it all depends how much time you wish to spend on SEO and how deep you want to get into it. Apart from picking a few random keywords after doing a post I don’t really bother with it as for me it takes away the enjoyment of blogging.
Sire’s last blog post..Blogging As A Source Of Information
That’s the difference between blogging for pleasure and blogging for business. You do what you do for pleasure. While I enjoy what I do I am always concerned about ROI and rankings. I have to be this is my business.
That’s why I never treat blogging as my main source of income. I like to blog and I’d rather make less money off of it but not be stressed about it at all.
I know all about the travails of business as I’ve been doing it for over 30 years. I reckon that’s why I don’t want to mix business with my blogging.

I think that SEO takes a little bit to start off from scratch, but not much in maintenance once you get into a steady rhythm (in the case of blogs) of making sure your content is SEO friendly, and then turning around to promoting it with links at other sites through commenting, internal linking, etc. But for the most part, unless you’re expecting immediate results, SEO can be quite easy and will grow in time with continued maintenance of your site.

Hi Kristi,
I agree SEO is easy if you know what you are doing. The problem is that most small business owners don’t even know that their website has a control panel.
However, for those of us that know… It is an easy process. The hardest part is keyword development. Finding out how real searchers think can be a daunting task.
Well, the worst thing about SEO imo is the thousands of SEO geniuses out there with no intention of bringing original content or beneficial information to the brains of live searchers. Wading through the junk as a searcher is a grind and a reality that can be frustrating.
Tucson SEO was a site a friend forwarded me a few months ago and I was immediately a fan. SEO with the intention of bringing good information to the number one page on searches and ethical back linking strategies.
Hats off and you deserve all the dollars and success!

Thanks Paul,
We have just made some changes to the site. Once I set the changes on the Top Commenter plugins you will be getting another link to your trout site.
As a small business owner we have worked very diligently to provide value for the customer. SEO does work, but if the website is not user friendly it will not matter. Bringing traffic to a broken website is not something that I have any desire to do.
I have walked away from a lot of business simply because the website owner was not prepared to do what it takes to be successful.
Also it should be noted that SEO is never a one and done process. The client needs to be prepared to add new content and to build links to maintain their high search rankings. I am pleased to work with those that understand this.
Thank you for your kind words.
Actually, I go for home runs but just not in the major leagues. I pick my battles were the numbers are in my favor and local and niche SEO is where you can hit grand slams all day long.
It’s all about entering markets that don’t have a lot of competition. I would rather be the big fish in a small pond.
I completely agree – you’ve got to puick your battles. That’s where targetting niche and micro-niche keyphrases really pays off. If you know what you’re doing you can quickly hit the frontpage of Google. It can be very profitable being a big fish in a small pond!
As for the advantage that having a blog makes I think you’ve hit the nail on the head – that’s why I added a blog to my directory site. It’s worth mentioning that if you’re using your blog to accumulate PR to feed to other pages on your (non-blog) site you’ll probably want to set it up under a subdirectory, not a subdomain. That way you can boost the PR of the overall site and channel it as desired. Some people say that PR is worthless, but personally I still think it brings some credibility.

Search engine optimization is the process of improving the volume or quality of traffic to a web site from search engines via “natural” or un-paid search results as opposed to search engine marketing (SEM) which deals with paid inclusion.this full process takes lots of time.

yes this happens with many beginners, even they don’t know that they have control panel in their custom domain websites, if they really find this hard then i m sure they would find freebies domains such as wordpress and blogger as a drastic to them

Well for a newbie to seo it can take a while for sure just because there is a learning curve. I think it is important to go after the less competitive keyword terms at the beginning until you are able to get enough authority for the more broad keyword terms. I love your scratch your back plugin I am thinking of installing it on my blog. Great post!

As an Internet marketing strategy, SEO considers how search engines work and what people search for. Optimizing a website primarily involves editing its content and HTML and associated coding to both increase its relevance to specific keywords.nice post.

I like your approach on this, I find most aspects of SEO pretty simple, however they require some consistency. I do like the challenge or at least the self challenge of trying to get a Google PR5

I can only share with you my short experience. I built my first-ever web site in the last summer, and submitted it to Googleon the end of June.
It was quite easy to achieve first page location for some two-words phrases. But my site sepntt four months in Google sandbox before my site appeared in the second SERP of single-word competitive keywords (the Hebrew version of lighting and lamps).
I knew nothing about SEO before I start this project, so I guess what took me four months would take for weeks for a pro?
Cheers,
Sty

Seo doesn’t take a whole lot of time on a seasoned website at all, But I have found that a brand new website with a fresh domain name can take several months for a competitive keyword or key phrase and sometimes years as you mentioned in your post depending on the other sites age and link popularity.
I also agree that you have a clear advantage with a blog over a competitors static pages as search engines do love content and you seem to be updating your blog on a regular basis. Also you have a ton of good comenters, providing you all of the content you need to dominate search results with ease!
Whether or not seo takes a long time or not depends on many factors. And it’s not just about achieving good rankings, it’s about maintaining them, and for competitive terms that takes continual work.
there are a lot of factors in SEO and how well you rank, if you are a veteran and know what you are doing its not that hard as long as you do not pick a very competitive keyword. But it does take hard work and effort its not something you can achieve overnight, a lot of people will do one big campaign and think their work is done, it may help your rankings for awhile but if you do not promote anything past that your rankings will most likely drop.
What I want to say about SEO is that backlink building is Alpha and Omega. It is the bread and butter of seo. I have recently learned of building links through social bookmarking, profile pages, ect and am exciting to start implementin them.
Straight from the spam filter – Commenter has been banned.
How long it takes depends on how much you know. If you are an expert in SEO, and know what you are doing, you should be able to rise to the top fairly quickly by targeting winnable keywords. But if you don’t know a whole lot about SEO, like I suspect most bloggers don’t, it might take a long time, or even forever.
Of course, a domain with age and authority helps a lot too. And proper keyword research is a must, as you point out. The more I try to research this topic, the more I learn how important it is to get the fundamentals right.
I have just added a blog to my website, in hopes that it will help with my SEO efforts, and while I can see a upward trend in traffic and rankings, the jury is still out. I am intrigued about this scratch my back marketing plugin though, and will add it to my blog as well.
How long did it take you to learn SEO? I just started and so far it is proving to be more difficult than I had imagined it would be. Where should you start?
Carl: It took me 4 months but the learning never stops!
Hello, the information on this site is really useful to me! I really learnt a lot from it! Thanks for all the different information=) great job! I really like it!
Hello, the information on this site is really useful to me! I really learnt a lot from it! Thanks for all the different information=) great job! I really really enjoy reading your site!
Depends on the niche, but yeah I think that it’s pretty easy once you learn how to do a few of the basic things that are needed for proper search engine optimization. It’s nice to see that you’ve got it down.
I guess you made that site number one in google in just a quick because you already had enough experience being an SEO but how about for the beginners? I agree with the other comment says that SEO is easy if you know what you are doing but to be an expert SEO you’ll had enough time and effort to exist.
