I guess you made that site number one in google in just a quick because you already had enough experience being an SEO but how about for the beginners? I agree with the other comment says that SEO is easy if you know what you are doing but to be an expert SEO you’ll had enough time and effort to exist.

Depends on the niche, but yeah I think that it’s pretty easy once you learn how to do a few of the basic things that are needed for proper search engine optimization. It’s nice to see that you’ve got it down.

How long did it take you to learn SEO? I just started and so far it is proving to be more difficult than I had imagined it would be. Where should you start?

How long it takes depends on how much you know. If you are an expert in SEO, and know what you are doing, you should be able to rise to the top fairly quickly by targeting winnable keywords. But if you don’t know a whole lot about SEO, like I suspect most bloggers don’t, it might take a long time, or even forever.

Of course, a domain with age and authority helps a lot too. And proper keyword research is a must, as you point out. The more I try to research this topic, the more I learn how important it is to get the fundamentals right.

I have just added a blog to my website, in hopes that it will help with my SEO efforts, and while I can see a upward trend in traffic and rankings, the jury is still out. I am intrigued about this scratch my back marketing plugin though, and will add it to my blog as well.

What I want to say about SEO is that backlink building is Alpha and Omega. It is the bread and butter of seo. I have recently learned of building links through social bookmarking, profile pages, ect and am exciting to start implementin them.

there are a lot of factors in SEO and how well you rank, if you are a veteran and know what you are doing its not that hard as long as you do not pick a very competitive keyword. But it does take hard work and effort its not something you can achieve overnight, a lot of people will do one big campaign and think their work is done, it may help your rankings for awhile but if you do not promote anything past that your rankings will most likely drop.

Whether or not seo takes a long time or not depends on many factors. And it’s not just about achieving good rankings, it’s about maintaining them, and for competitive terms that takes continual work.

Seo doesn’t take a whole lot of time on a seasoned website at all, But I have found that a brand new website with a fresh domain name can take several months for a competitive keyword or key phrase and sometimes years as you mentioned in your post depending on the other sites age and link popularity.

I also agree that you have a clear advantage with a blog over a competitors static pages as search engines do love content and you seem to be updating your blog on a regular basis. Also you have a ton of good comenters, providing you all of the content you need to dominate search results with ease!

I can only share with you my short experience. I built my first-ever web site in the last summer, and submitted it to Googleon the end of June.

It was quite easy to achieve first page location for some two-words phrases. But my site sepntt four months in Google sandbox before my site appeared in the second SERP of single-word competitive keywords (the Hebrew version of lighting and lamps).

I knew nothing about SEO before I start this project, so I guess what took me four months would take for weeks for a pro?

I like your approach on this, I find most aspects of SEO pretty simple, however they require some consistency. I do like the challenge or at least the self challenge of trying to get a Google PR5

Well for a newbie to seo it can take a while for sure just because there is a learning curve. I think it is important to go after the less competitive keyword terms at the beginning until you are able to get enough authority for the more broad keyword terms. I love your scratch your back plugin I am thinking of installing it on my blog. Great post!

I completely agree – you’ve got to puick your battles. That’s where targetting niche and micro-niche keyphrases really pays off. If you know what you’re doing you can quickly hit the frontpage of Google. It can be very profitable being a big fish in a small pond!

As for the advantage that having a blog makes I think you’ve hit the nail on the head – that’s why I added a blog to my directory site. It’s worth mentioning that if you’re using your blog to accumulate PR to feed to other pages on your (non-blog) site you’ll probably want to set it up under a subdirectory, not a subdomain. That way you can boost the PR of the overall site and channel it as desired. Some people say that PR is worthless, but personally I still think it brings some credibility.

Actually, I go for home runs but just not in the major leagues. I pick my battles were the numbers are in my favor and local and niche SEO is where you can hit grand slams all day long.

It’s all about entering markets that don’t have a lot of competition. I would rather be the big fish in a small pond.
