Stop Spam With One Simple Line Of Text

November 6, 2009

The reality of blogs and blog marketing is that most visitors don’t really care what you have to say. They are here for a backlink and the quicker they can get thought the process the better for them. It is a sad situation for the writer who is trying to share useful information and it gets ignored.

Since the beginning of the year we required a relevant 20 word requirement to acquire a Do Follow backlink. This requirement was posted at the end of each post. This was ignored because most people where not bothering to read the post. That forced me to create the Scratch My Back Marketing plugin which made this requirement mandatory.

This ended the short spammy drive by comments. People just switched to telling me how wonderful and inspiring the blog was. They where really heaping on the sugar, but there comments had nothing to do with the post thus they didn’t get a link. Then a few days ago I added one amazing line just above the blogs comment box. It reads “This is a no spam zone comments moderated.”

Almost all comments came to a halt. Comments have dropped from about 15 a day to 1 or 2 now. I wanted to add this line for sometime now but I didn’t know how. Now, I do. It’s truly amazing what one small line of text can do if it is properly placed.

Are you ready to leave a useful comment? We invite you to do so and earn a valuable Do Follow backlink.

Yes that is so true with blog marketing, people just wanted to link with the blog but not read the contents. And these people are totally missing things they should have learned from the valuable information shared by these blog writers.

Clearly something is completely wrong in the current Google/Yahoo/Bing algorithms, if site owners, or their SEO consultants, have to spent time and energy looking for DoFollow blogs and left their not-really-important comments.

If the ‘weight’ of each back-link would be a function of the “mutual overlap of the areas-of-interest of the linked pages”, then most of the zero-information comments will “disappear”.

    My two cents,

OMG, How incredibly simple but effective. From 15 to 1 or 2? Amazing. Great wonderful!! Have I pour on enough sugar yet?…JK :P

Seriously though, I would like to know where you added it in the coding: The comment submit php or as part or the template? You’ll have to excuse my ignorance. Not the best with blogging software here.

Also, how do you combat the offshore link farms that don’t read or even understand English?

Admin: Great Question. We edited the theme.

admin, Thanks! I’ll have a look my themes, as I have a “few” blogs.

Tylight, Why would you think that? Search engines are an information based popularity contest. Its very much like High School except that the “popular kids” in the search rankings are the ones with some thing relevant to say and people vote for them, not just the fact that they are pretty.

      My 2 cents.

It’s very sad that people are so fake as to “pour on sugar” so that their comment is approved. Sad. I just recently started my new blog about blogging and installed it in the sub directory of my main domain. This blog also is do follow and has comment luv installed. I haven’t had a load of spam comments yet.
One thing I do is I always check out the person’s blog and look to see if it looks like a spam or automated blog.
Fortunately Akismet has worked very well for me in moderating spam. There’s also Wp Spam free plugin that my friends have recommended to me. I don’t use Wp Spam free though because sometimes it throws out good comments from real people. If comment spam becomes an issue in the future though I will probably install it.
    All the best,
    Eren

yes it is absolutely true, if we mark them neatly then they will be just limited to some words such as Thank you, Hey, Keep posting, i think such comments are mostly spams and they are just here for Backlinks

Oh my gosh! this is so funny.. I literally just posted a comment on how people never read posts because they are all too interested in getting the backlink from do-follow blogs. AND THEN I stumble across your blog.
Its quite a shame because people and spammers like that ruin it for everyone else. One blog I knew of that was do-follow switched to no-follow because of the spamming issue. It was very sad for the rest of us that liked to write relevant info and still get the backlink. I just don’t understand why people cant EVEN SCAN the post and write something useful. It doesn’t take any time at all and by writing relevant comments its most likely you’ll get your do-follow backlink. But no. People that write crap, “you’re so great, love the post” that have to ruin it for EVERYONE. suckers.

Admin: Thomas, thank for paying attention and for leaving a great comment.

Sounds great.there are many types of spam.they have different effects on internet users.spam is flooding the internet with many copies.well your post seems very useful i will try this and let you know the results.

Those spammers are really very disgusting because i have seen so many people who just wright 2 or three words they just try to want approval for their comment. Anyways keep it up and keep continue with your interesting posts.

I need to implement this small line of code into my blogs asap… My blogs don’t offer all of the perks that yours does with the comment love, keyword love and we don’t offer a dofollow comment either.

That’s why I can’t understand all of the spam attempts that my sites receive. Anybody that understands search engines should understand that nofollow comments are weak at best and that they should use other techniques like article marketing, dofollow blog commenting, ect…

Btw… did you coin the phrase “no spam zone” from Bill O Reilly’s “no spin zone”?

Admin: You are receiving auto spam from bots try adding the WP plugin called Tan TanNoodles. It will eliminate this problem.

    • Justin from Internet Marketing (2 comments) says:

Thanks, I will download and install the plugin right now :) I am also thinking about going dofollow with my blogs again and just loading up on good plugins like your 150 character minimum plugin and some of the others that you have mentioned.

  11. mark from Bunn Coffee Filters (7 comments) says:

Hey, I’m glad that you can see through the BS sugary comments where people are still trying to get by your comment policy. I am thinking myself of implementing a 20 word minimum to get rid of the “great post” comments right off the bat. It’s really a shame to see blogs switch to no follow only because they are completely harassed by spammers.

Interesting approach, going the all the way and creating your own plugin, to stop spamming. All my blogs are do follow, and so far I can’t complain about the spam comments, there are’nt so many, maybe one per day.

But I think I will download the plugin, and give it a try, see how things are going.

  14. Portable Propane Heaters (1 comments) says:

Actually, spamming is not so nice to the blogging community. I do the same thing as your line above but I add a few words warning the commenter that only relevant and high quality comments will be approved. It’s a good thing you are doing for the community.

Some time some users they do not know about he spam he just put his link in any blog post more than one time. That’s why now a time most of blog administrate they do not provide do follow links. Because of spamming it create bad effect on his blog as well as the commenter who enter there link on the post.

Admin: Yes, that’s true and an SEO link builder should know how to use Keyword Luv… Link denied!!!!!!!!!

I wanted to drop you a quick note to express my thanks. Ive been reading through your blog for a few days or so and have picked up a ton of excellent information as well as enjoyed the way youve structured your site. Im trying to run my own blog however I think its too general and I need to focus more on smaller topics. Being all things to all people is not all that its cracked up to be.
