SEO By Google – The SEO Guide

August 20, 2009

That’s right Google has created an SEO Starter Guide that clearly explains the fundamentals of search engine optimization, and it free. But before I go any further, let’s take a look back at Google’s change of heart concerning SEO. That’s right, change of heart. The fact that Google is now embracing SEO represents a 180 degree change for Google.

Back in the day, in a not so distant past Google was at odds with SEO and considered them spammers. Old timers in this business love to tell how easy it was to manipulate the search engines to gain high rankings. That put the SEO community in direct conflict with the search engines. At that time search optimizing a website meant cramming a bunch of keywords in the Meta tags. That morphed to cramming a bunch of keywords into the content. Then it again morphed into a focus on links when it was discovered that Google’s algorithm was based on backlinks. Since our efforts were considered to be spamming Google was forced to adjust their algorithms accordingly and continually.

Google’s spokesman on all matters concerning Search Engine Optimization, Matt Cutts, is part of Google’s anti spam unit. This shows us all what Google has thought about the whole SEO industry. Only recently has Google began to change its position. A few months ago they adjusted their webmaster guidelines (July 2008) to reflect a more positive view on SEO. Then a few months later (October 2008) they created their own search engine optimization starter guide. As our industry has matured Google has finally embraced our services as legitimate.

This change is good for everyone involved. Their actions have the effect of legitimizing our industry, which has had a checkered past. SEO can be very confusing for a beginner because there are a myriad of opinions and until now there has been no clear direction provided by the search engines on the best practices. That has finally come to a screeching halt.

I spend a fair amount of time on a couple of dozen industry related forums. I often suggest that people visit Google webmaster guidelines to get the true Google view of things. This is especially true when it comes to discussions on link building. Now, I have a reference for SEO related questions. Yesterday, I linked about a dozen forum comments directly to this document. In other words, this is what Google has to say about SEO.

What Google fails to mention is that it places length restrictions on Page Titles and Page Descriptions that appear in the search results. Generally Page Titles should not exceed 65 characters and spaces. Page Descriptions should should not exceed 160.

I am now, planning on incorporating this starter guide as part of my hand-outs at our seminars. Thank you Google.

Thanks. I love to hear from the horses mouth about SEO relating to Gooogle.

Admin: Hi, Jessica. Thanks for the comment. I would agree. I go to a lot of SEO forums and find people asking all kinds of questions about SEO. I always suggest that they learn from Google.

Admin: Very nice copy and paste job of comment spamming!

That is absolutely true that google is main Search Engine for optimization and Google is very important for SEO

Admin: That a very weak response from an SEO provider.

In my opinion, excellent quality, relevant inbound links will help customers and search engines find your business website best. To getting top position on SERP ranking, we must know about how Google gives results for particular keyword.

Admin: I will never link to a site that offers guaranteed SEO results. You can not ethically guarantee that which you can not control. We do not control the search engines!

That is why most seo compagnys have a no cure no pay mehtod.
    I think that’s fair enough.

Ive visited some do follow forums, today and what i noticed is, was that they all turned into nofollow, which i completely understand because of the commentspamm and the ridiculous comments u get. Thats why i think this “Scratch My Back Marketing.” is a nice way for both party’s

    grtz

Admin: William I would really like to provide a link for your great comment but I don’t link to sites that I can not read.

its oke, for the record, its dutch painting website hehe :)

Admin: I don’t mind providing links that’s why we are using Keyword and Comment Luv, but the sites that I link to really need to be useful to my readers. It doesn’t do any good to send them to a site were they can read the language. Thank you for being understanding.

Well,A very good post on SEO.
The link in your post on SEO starter guide is not working. It says that the page you are looking for no longer exists. Why so?
Google has made itself very popular as far as search engines are considered. It has become so popular that businesses that deal with SEO are much more concerned about performance on Google rather than other search engines.
So does that mean, we have to optimize our websites only considering Google?

Wow…i cant believe how cool this site is. I get stuck on something and then i come back here and the answer is staring me in the face. I cant thank all the people who put this together enough. You should optimize your sites for google…and the other sites will follow suit.
