What the Bing Is Going On Here?

As most of you already know Microsoft was launched it new search engine called Bing. Oops! Make that decision engine. The question for me is how will this affect my site and business. Will enough people searching for our targeted keywords make a difference to me? Bing can gain all the market share it wants but if it doesn’t directly affect our site then I really don’t care. Everything else is just interesting stuff.

The site as always ranked better with MSN than it did with Google or Yahoo, but so few people used it for our keyword it didn’t make a difference. Below I have outlined four keyword phrases that we target to make my point. This information is part of a weekly.

I am experiencing trouble with my tables today. So I will explain rather than just show you are chart of the results.

I checked 4 different keyword phrases

Local SEO

Arizona SEO

Phoenix SEO

Tucson SEO

Our site ranks better with Bing than it does with the other two majors in 3 out of these four searches. The other keyword phrase, Tucson SEO, the site ranks # ! across all the major search engines. While this is nice the question remains, what does this mean for website traffic. We had almost no traffic from Microsoft so any improvement will be statistically significant.

Last month the site had 15 visitors a month from MSN Live that has jumped to 60 over the last 30 days. That is a nice jump and it is traffic that we may not have acquired any other way. It will take some time to discover if that was just the SEO crowd checking things in Bing or not. If those numbers reflect real potential clients then Bing might begin to affect our bottom line.

Personally, I like Bing. It has some new features that will likely be added by the other majors.

Bing might actually be able to grab some market share in the search wars. I sure hope so since they have put 100 Million dollars into the advertising budget to promote its launch.

A client’s site, focused on tutoring, has definitely seen a jump of 2-3 places for various terms in Bing’s local results as compared to the older search from MSN. It’s also seen a gain of 1-2 ranks in organic search for one of their biggest keywords.

They’re still ranking better in Yahoo! and Google, though.

As you said, Bing traffic is significantly less than the traffic from Google, and Yahoo!; we’re talking less than 100 hits compared to hundreds. From the traffic they are getting, we’ve seen an increase in their traffic from Bing of about 5% due to these changes, which is actually pretty surprising given that finals are now over at most schools. It’s hard to compare accurately with such small traffic numbers though.

All in all, it’s interesting to see. For the most part we’re still optimizing for Google more heavily than anything else.

Admin: Great comment… Thanks! I visited your site and expected a site located in New Zealand and not Lancaster, Pa. Maybe, your a Kiwi living in Pa.

  2. I was wondering the same thing as to whether or not what people are searching for in Bing will make a difference to me, but it is good to hear, as it was mentioned above, that other people are seeing a small percentage of their traffic increase from Bing.

I do not think that any of the search engines either new or old is going to beat Google for a long time..
Bing is Microsoft’s new experiment.. Lets see how it comes out! :)

Has Anyone Noticed That “BING” Keeps on Showing “DUPLICATE” Results Instead of Different Results on Subsequent Pages… Esp. with Less Common Keywords??
Is it Microsoft Strategy to “BLOAT” the Number of Search Results …. Because They Feel that Very Few People Go Beyond 2-3 Pages or Remember the Result URLs !!

Such Cheap Tricks Harm in Long Term..

If Bing wants to Compete Google … It must act Professionally.. NO TRICKS with Its Users !

Admin: I am like most users I don’t go beyond the first page. So I have not seen this.
