Where Have All The Do Follows Gone?

In the last year things have definitely gotten much more difficult for my link building efforts. And I am not alone in this regard. I have been thinking about writing about this topic for some time now.

I lost thousands of backlinks on the Ning network of sites about this time last year. I had profiles on over 100 Ning sites. Then Ning made almost every link a No Follow link. This one really hurt. I was and am a big fan of self posting articles on social media sites to build links. Each of these sites had about 8 posts on each site.

Each of these blog posts included a few backlinks. Now, they were not short or self promoting items. No, I was putting Scratch My Back Marketing into action by providing useful content. So if you do the math 800 posts at 10 minutes each… Well, that a lot of lost links and time.

This week I also noted that Facebook has eliminated most Do Follow links. Then, today, I discovered that Hub Pages is also No Follow. I even watched a video this week by Matt Cutt’s of Google that covered this situation.  He noted that the vast majority of internet links are Do Follow.

While this may be true but finding useful sites that provide user generated content and Do Follow links is becoming extremely to accomplish. I know that I have considered going No Follow on my blog.

Since link building is a service that I provide I am monitoring things closely. I have noted that each year I lose about 40 % of my backlink. The sites simply close or become No Follow. I also make sure that my clients understand this. Not only do you need to build links but you need to replace links on a regular basis.

This situation is not going to change anytime soon. The short sighted spammers will not likely change their ways.

What say you?
