Who Are You Linking Too?

Who are you linking you? That’s right… I’m asking who you are linking to rather than who is linking to you. As website owners that have a clue or two, we understand that acquiring links is vital if we desire to rank well in the search results. Thus many of us place most of our time and effort into the process of developing useful backlinks.

We often don’t realize or we overlook who we are linking out to. As bloggers we often mention other sites in our articles. We are writing about a specific website we have already established some kind of a connection. That’s a very basic element of blogging. What many of us don’t pay attention to is who we are linking to through the comment section of the blog.

Many blog owners only focus on whether the comment is relevant to the ongoing discussion. If the comment is good nothing happens or the comment is approved. That is where the problems can begin. The search engines know that you can not control who links to you but you can control who you link to. Linking to the wrong websites can put your website reputation and rankings at risk.

That is why I verify who we are linking to. In the past we were a No Follow blog. So it didn’t make much difference who we linked too. That link was not going to be followed. Now, we are a Do Follow blog and we will be held accountable for who we link too. With this in mind I verify all new links to make sure that the site is considered reputable.

In the process of protecting our reputation we will not link to porno, escort, or gambling sites. We take this a step further we will not link to new blogs that have little or no content. Yes, we have had people link to empty pages previously. We don’t give them a link because I have no idea what will eventually appear there. We will not provide links to one page marketing sites that are hustling the latest get quick scheme. Finally, I do not link to foreign language sites. It’s not worth the risk if I don’t know what being said!

Protecting our reputation is extremely important to me. That is why I am going back through all the comments that were placed on the blog when it was a no follow blog. I did this a while back and removed the drive by comments. Now, it is time to take a closer look at the comment links again. I started the process yesterday and I discovered a few sites that were questionable and I deleted those comments.

There is a plus to visiting all these sites. Most of them, the vast majority of these sites are legitimate and many contain great and useful material. So while it is a time consuming process I have found great resources along the way.

So let me close this post by asking this, who are you linking too?

We at Tucson SEO Solutions are officially requesting that you join the conversation here. That is, if you found that this post was at all interesting, useful, or perhaps you are just looking for a useful link. Then, I would like to entice you to comment by providing you with useful backlinks as part of what I call “Scratch My Back Marketing.”

The Scratch My Back Marketing requires you to scratch this blog by leaving a useful comment of at least 20 words or more. Your comment should be relevant to the post. My scratch is that you will receive a Do Follow anchor text link (Keyword Luv.) And if you have a blog with an RSS feed enabled you will receive an extra permalink back to your blog via Comment Luv.

It’s all about win/win marketing. I am willing to exchange page rank for the bump that a fresh comment provides.

I totally agree that linking to the wrong site will put your website reputation at risk, and I do appreciate you verifying all of your Do Follow links to maintain the credibility of your blog.

Wow!!! You are so totally right!
And so many people don’t even think about this. I have a friend who has a lingerie site and I just could not link to her- not that there is anything wrong with lingerie but my site is more family friendly and I can’t have a kid ending up on a site with women wearing lingerie.
I have posts that were created with children in mind so – that’s also a factor to consider.
So other than the spiders there’s also other visitors to consider too.
    Great advice here!
    All the best,
    Eren

I totally agree, and in my opinion this is the most problematic and time-consuming aspect of operating a dofollow blog. The problem is that even though a site may be in good standing when you approve a comment, you don’t know when it’ll become part of a “bad neighbourhood” (perhaps by inadvertantly approving links to other dodgy sites), and before you know it your site becomes tarnished too.

Admin: Rod made a very good point here. I might have to revise my post to reflect this point. If we are linking to a site and we do not check it regularly it could cause problems. Great response… Thanks!
