Why Are Links So Hard To Find
For sometime now Matt Cutts of Google has been answering questions from the general public. These are then posted on YouTube. I discovered this one on Twitter and I immediately clicked to watch. I think the video is worth watching but the answers was lame.
Matt Claims that the vast majority of links on the internet are Do Follow links and that is likely so. But it is not so on sites that allow user generated content as most of these links are No Follow. He presented the company line that quality content attracts links. While this is true that only part of the answer. It is extremely difficult for most small businesses to attract links.
Lets consider the bee keepers web site or any local business. There are not enough people wanting their services that even know that their sites exist. Now, you have to ask how many of their customers have blogs that are willing to write a post and then link to these sites. The answer is likely very few. So the reality is that most local businesses are not going to be generating many backlinks to their sites. They are to then locate social sites that allow user generated content and backlinks.
So in many ways the quality content argument is bogus. Most local business customers are not going to blog about your great website. No, but they might write about the quality or lack of it that they found when dealing with your business. The odds that they would find your website useful and blog about it are slim to none. So from my point of view the company line here is a bit of a joke. Here is the video please let me know what you think about it.
